[1]Whiles Ezra prayed thus, and confessed himself weeping, and falling down before the house of God, there assembled unto him of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept with a great lamentation. |
| [2]And ShechaniahH7935 the sonH1121 of JehielH3171, one of the sonsH1121 of ElamH5867, answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799] unto EzraH5830, We have trespassedH4603[H8804] against our GodH430, and have takenH3427[H8686] strangeH5237 wivesH802 of the peopleH5971 of the landH776: yet now there isH3426 hopeH4723 in Israel concerning this thingH3478. |
[2]Then Shechaniah the son of Jehiel one of the sons of Elam answered, and said to Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land, yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this. |
| [3]Now therefore let us makeH3772[H8799] a covenantH1285 with our GodH430 to put awayH3318[H8687] all the wivesH802, and such as are bornH3205[H8737] of them, according to the counselH6098 of my lordH136, and of those that trembleH2730 at the commandmentH4687 of our GodH430; and let it be doneH6213[H8735] according to the lawH8451. |
[3]Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God, to put away all the wives (and such as are born of them) according to the counsel of the Lord, and of those that fear the commandments of our God, and let it be done according to the law. |
| [4]AriseH6965[H8798]; for this matterH1697 belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courageH2388[H8798], and doH6213 itH8798. |
[4]Arise: for the matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of comfort and do it. |
| [5]Then aroseH6965[H8799] EzraH5830, and made the chiefH8269 priestsH3548, the LevitesH3881, and all IsraelH3478, to swearH7650[H8686] that they should doH6213[H8800] according to this wordH1697. And they swareH7650.[H8735] |
[5]Then arose Ezra, and caused the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they swear. |
| [6]Then EzraH5830 rose upH6965[H8799] from beforeH6440 the houseH1004 of GodH430, and wentH3212[H8799] into the chamberH3957 of JohananH3076 the sonH1121 of EliashibH475: and when he cameH3212[H8799] thither, he did eatH398[H8804] no breadH3899, nor drinkH8354[H8804] waterH4325: for he mournedH56[H8693] because of the transgressionH4604 of them that had been carried awayH1473. |
[6]And Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: he went even thither, but he did eat neither bread, nor drunk water: for he mourned, because of the transgression of them of the captivity. |
| [7]And they made proclamationH5674[H8686][H6963] throughout JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 unto all the childrenH1121 of the captivityH1473, that they should gather themselves togetherH6908[H8736] unto JerusalemH3389; |
[7]And they caused a proclamation to go throughout Judah and Jerusalem, unto all them of the captivity, that they should assemble themselves unto Jerusalem. |
| [8]And that whosoever would not comeH935[H8799] within threeH7969 daysH3117, according to the counselH6098 of the princesH8269 and the eldersH2205, all his substanceH7399 should be forfeitedH2763[H8714], and himself separatedH914[H8735] from the congregationH6951 of those that had been carried awayH1473. |
[8]And whosoever would not come within three days according to the counsel of the princes and elders, all his substance should be forfeit, and he should be separate from the congregation of them of the captivity. |
| [9]Then all the menH582 of JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144 gathered themselves togetherH6908[H8735] unto JerusalemH3389 within threeH7969 daysH3117. It was the ninthH8671 monthH2320, on the twentiethH6242 day of the monthH2320; and all the peopleH5971 satH3427[H8799] in the streetH7339 of the houseH1004 of GodH430, tremblingH7460[H8688] because of this matterH1697, and for the great rainH1653. |
[9]Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled themselves unto Jerusalem within three days, which was the twentieth day of the ninth month, and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling for this matter, and for the rain. |
| [10]And EzraH5830 the priestH3548 stood upH6965[H8799], and saidH559[H8799] unto them, Ye have transgressedH4603[H8804], and have takenH3427[H8686] strangeH5237 wivesH802, to increaseH3254[H8687] the trespassH819 of IsraelH3478. |
[10]And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. |
| [11]Now therefore makeH5414[H8798] confessionH8426 unto the LORDH3068 GodH430 of your fathersH1, and doH6213[H8798] his pleasureH7522: and separateH914[H8734] yourselves from the peopleH5971 of the landH776, and from the strangeH5237 wivesH802. |
[11]Now therefore give praise unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his will, and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. |
| [12]Then all the congregationH6951 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799] with a loudH1419 voiceH6963, As thou hast saidH1697, so must we doH6213.[H8800] |
[12]And all the congregation answered, and said with a loud voice, So will we do according to thy words unto us. |
| [13]ButH61 the peopleH5971 are manyH7227, and it is a timeH6256 of much rainH1653, and we are not ableH3581 to standH5975[H8800] withoutH2351, neither is this a workH4399 of oneH259 dayH3117 or twoH8147: for we are manyH7235[H8689] that have transgressedH6586[H8800] in this thingH1697. |
[13]But the people are many, and it is a rainy weather, and we are not able to stand without, neither is it the work of one day or two: for we are many that have offended in this thing. |
| [14]Let now our rulersH8269 of all the congregationH6951 standH5975[H8799], and let all them which have takenH3427[H8689] strangeH5237 wivesH802 in our citiesH5892 comeH935[H8799] at appointedH2163[H8794] timesH6256, and with them the eldersH2205 of every cityH5892, and the judgesH8199[H8802] thereof, until the fierceH2740 wrathH639 of our GodH430 for this matterH1697 be turnedH7725 from usH8687. |
[14]Let our rulers stand therefore before all the congregation, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities, come at the time appointed, and with them the elders of every city and the judges thereof, till the fierce wrath of our God for this matter turn away from us. |
| [15]Only JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of AsahelH6214 and JahaziahH3167 the sonH1121 of TikvahH8616 were employedH5975[H8804] about this matter: and MeshullamH4918 and ShabbethaiH7678 the LeviteH3881 helpedH5826 themH8804. |
[15]Then were appointed Jonathan the son of Asa-hel, and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah over this matter, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levites helped them. |
| [16]And the childrenH1121 of the captivityH1473 did soH6213[H8799]. And EzraH5830 the priestH3548, with certainH582 chiefH7218 of the fathersH1, after the houseH1004 of their fathersH1, and all of them by their namesH8034, were separatedH914[H8735], and sat downH3427[H8799] in the firstH259 dayH3117 of the tenthH6224 monthH2320 to examineH1875[H8800] the matterH1697. |
[16]And they of the captivity did so, and departed, even Ezra the priest, and the men that were chief fathers to the family of their fathers by name, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. |
| [17]And they made an endH3615[H8762] with all the menH582 that had takenH3427[H8689] strangeH5237 wivesH802 by the firstH259 dayH3117 of the firstH7223 monthH2320. |
[17]And until the first day of the first month they were finishing the business with all the men that had taken strange wives. |
| [18]And among the sonsH1121 of the priestsH3548 there were foundH4672[H8735] that had takenH3427[H8689] strangeH5237 wivesH802: namely, of the sonsH1121 of JeshuaH3442 the sonH1121 of JozadakH3136, and his brethrenH251; MaaseiahH4641, and EliezerH461, and JaribH3402, and GedaliahH1436. |
[18]And of the sons of the priests there were men found, that had taken strange wives, to wit, of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and of his brethren, Maaseiah, Eliezer, and Jarib and Gedaliah. |
| [19]And they gaveH5414[H8799] their handsH3027 that they would put awayH3318[H8687] their wivesH802; and being guiltyH818, they offered a ramH352 of the flockH6629 for their trespassH819. |
[19]And they gave their hands, that they would put away their wives, and they that had trespassed, gave a ram for their trespass. |
