| [1]When Sarah was an hundred twenty and seven year old (so long lived she) |
[1]ויהיו חיי שרה מאה שנה ועשרים שנה ושבע שנים־שני חיי שרה |
| [2]Then Sarah died in Kirjath-arba: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. |
[2]ותמת שרה בקרית ארבע הוא חברון־בארץ כנען ויבא אברהם לספד לשרה ולבכתה |
| [3]Then Abraham rose up from the sight of his corpse, and talked with the Hittites, saying, |
[3]ויקם אברהם מעל פני מתו וידבר אל בני חת לאמר |
| [4]I am a stranger, and a foreigner among you, give me a possession of burial with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. |
[4]גר ותושב אנכי עמכם תנו לי אחזת קבר עמכם ואקברה מתי מלפני |
| [5]Then the Hittites answered Abraham, saying unto him, |
[5]ויענו בני חת את אברהם לאמר לו |
| [6]Hear us, my lord: thou art a prince of God among us: in the chiefest of our sepulchres bury thy dead: none of us shall forbid thee his sepulchre, but thou mayest bury thy dead therein. |
[6]שמענו אדני נשיא אלהים אתה בתוכנו־במבחר קברינו קבר את מתך איש ממנו את קברו לא יכלה ממך מקבר מתך |
| [7]Then Abraham stood up, and bowed himself before the people of the land of the Hittites. |
[7]ויקם אברהם וישתחו לעם הארץ לבני חת |
| [8]And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind, that I shall bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, |
[8]וידבר אתם לאמר אם יש את נפשכם לקבר את מתי מלפני־שמעוני ופגעו לי בעפרון בן צחר |
| [9]That he would give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath in the end of his field: that he would give it me for as much money as it is worth, for a possession to bury in among you. |
[9]ויתן לי את מערת המכפלה אשר לו אשר בקצה שדהו בכסף מלא יתננה לי בתוככם־לאחזת קבר |
| [10](For Ephron dwelt among the Hittites) Then Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of all the Hittites that went in at the gates of his city, saying, |
[10]ועפרון ישב בתוך בני חת ויען עפרון החתי את אברהם באזני בני חת לכל באי שער עירו לאמר |
| [11]No, my Lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave, that therein is, I give it thee: even in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee, to bury thy dead. |
[11]לא אדני שמעני־השדה נתתי לך והמערה אשר בו לך נתתיה לעיני בני עמי נתתיה לך קבר מתך |
| [12]Then Abraham bowed himself before the people of the land, |
[12]וישתחו אברהם לפני עם הארץ |
| [13]And spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the country, saying, Seeing thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me, I will give the price of the field: receive it of me, and I will bury my dead there. |
[13]וידבר אל עפרון באזני עם הארץ לאמר אך אם אתה לו שמעני נתתי כסף השדה קח ממני ואקברה את מתי שמה |
| [14]Ephron then answered Abraham, saying unto him, |
[14]ויען עפרון את אברהם לאמר לו |
| [15]My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver: what is that between me and thee? Bury therefore thy dead. |
[15]אדני שמעני ארץ ארבע מאת שקל כסף ביני ובינך מה הוא ואת מתך קבר |
| [16]So Abraham hearkened unto Ephron, and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named, in the audience of the Hittites, even four hundred silver shekels of current money among merchants. |
[16]וישמע אברהם אל עפרון וישקל אברהם לעפרן את הכסף אשר דבר באזני בני חת־ארבע מאות שקל כסף עבר לסחר |
| [17]So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, and over against Mamre, even the field and the cave that was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, which were in all the borders round about, was made sure |
[17]ויקם שדה עפרון אשר במכפלה אשר לפני ממרא השדה והמערה אשר בו וכל העץ אשר בשדה אשר בכל גבלו סביב |
| [18]Unto Abraham for a possession, in the sight of the Hittites, even of all that went in at the gates of his city. |
[18]לאברהם למקנה לעיני בני חת בכל באי שער עירו |
| [19]And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah over against Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. |
[19]ואחרי כן קבר אברהם את שרה אשתו אל מערת שדה המכפלה על פני ממרא־הוא חברון בארץ כנען |
| [20]Thus the field and the cave, that is therein, was made sure unto Abraham for a possession of burial by the Hittites. |
[20]ויקם השדה והמערה אשר בו לאברהם־לאחזת קבר מאת בני חת |
