[1]And there is a famine in the land, besides the first famine which was in the days of Abraham, and Isaac goeth unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar. |
[1]Forsothe for hungur roos on the lond, aftir thilke bareynesse that bifelde in the daies of Abraham, Isaac yede forth to Abymelech, kyng of Palestyns, in Gerara. |
[2]And Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith, `Go not down towards Egypt, tabernacle in the land concerning which I speak unto thee, |
[2]And the Lord apperide to hym, and seide, Go not doun in to Egipt, but reste thou in the lond which Y schal seie to thee, |
[3]sojourn in this land, and I am with thee, and bless thee, for to thee and to thy seed I give all these lands, and I have established the oath which I have sworn to Abraham thy father; |
[3]and be thou a pilgrym ther ynne; and Y schal be with thee, and Y schal blesse thee; for Y schal yyue alle these cuntrees to thee and to thi seed, and Y schal fille the ooth which Y bihiyte to Abraham, thi fadir. |
[4]and I have multiplied thy seed as stars of the heavens, and I have given to thy seed all these lands; and blessed themselves in thy seed have all nations of the earth; |
[4]And Y schal multiplie thi seed as the sterris of heuene, and Y schal yyue alle these thingis to thin eyris, and alle folkis of erthe schulen be blessid in thi seed, for Abraham obeide to my vois, |
[5]because that Abraham hath hearkened to My voice, and keepeth My charge, My commands, My statutes, and My laws.' |
[5]and kepte `my preceptis and comaundementis, and kepte cerymonyes and lawis. |
[6]And Isaac dwelleth in Gerar; |
[6]And so Ysaac dwellide in Geraris. |
[7]and men of the place ask him of his wife, and he saith, `She [is] my sister:' for he hath been afraid to say, `My wife -- lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, for she [is] of good appearance.' |
[7]And whanne he was axid of men of that place of his wijf, he answarde, Sche is my sistir; for he dredde to knowleche that sche was felouschipid to hym in matrymonye, and gesside lest peraduenture thei wolden sle him for the fairnesse of hir. |
[8]And it cometh to pass, when the days have been prolonged to him there, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looketh through the window, and seeth, and lo, Isaac is playing with Rebekah his wife. |
[8]And whanne ful many daies weren passid, and he dwellide there, Abymelech, kyng of Palestyns, bihelde bi a wyndow, and seiy hym pleiynge with Rebecca, his wijf. |
[9]And Abimelech calleth for Isaac, and saith, `Lo, she [is] surely thy wife; and how hast thou said, She [is] my sister?' and Isaac saith unto him, `Because I said, Lest I die for her.' |
[9]And whanne Isaac was clepid, the kyng seide, It is opyn, that sche is thi wijf; whi liedist thou, that sche was thi sistir? Isaac answerde, Y dredde, lest Y schulde die for hir. |
[10]And Abimelech saith, `What [is] this thou hast done to us? as a little thing one of the people had lain with thy wife, and thou hadst brought upon us guilt;' |
[10]And Abymelech seide, Whi hast thou disseyued vs? Sum man of the puple myyte do letcherie with thi wijf, and thou haddist brouyt in greuous synne on vs. And the kyng comaundide to al the puple, |
[11]and Abimelech commandeth all the people, saying, `He who cometh against this man or against his wife, dying doth die.' |
[11]and seide, He that touchith the wijf of this man schal die bi deeth. |
[12]And Isaac soweth in that land, and findeth in that year a hundredfold, and Jehovah blesseth him; |
[12]Forsothe Isaac sowide in that lond, and he foond an hundrid fold in that yeer; and the Lord blesside hym. |
[13]and the man is great, and goeth on, going on and becoming great, till that he hath been very great, |
[13]And the man was maad riche, and he yede profitynge and encreessynge til he was maad ful greet. |
[14]and he hath possession of a flock, and possession of a herd, and an abundant service; and the Philistines envy him, |
[14]Also he hadde possessioun of scheep and grete beestis, and ful myche of meyne. For this thing Palestyns hadden enuye to hym, |
[15]and all the wells which his father's servants digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines have stopped them, and fill them with dust. |
[15]and thei stoppiden in that tyme and filliden with erthe alle the pittis whiche the seruauntis of Abraham his fadir hadden diggid, |
[16]And Abimelech saith unto Isaac, `Go from us; for thou hast become much mightier than we;' |
[16]in so myche that Abymelech him silf seide to Ysaac, Go thou awei fro vs, for thou art maad greetly myytier than we. |
[17]and Isaac goeth from thence, and encampeth in the valley of Gerar, and dwelleth there; |
[17]And he yede awei, that he schulde come to the stronde of Gerare, and dwelle there. |
[18]and Isaac turneth back, and diggeth the wells of water which they digged in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines do stop after the death of Abraham, and he calleth to them names according to the names which his father called them. |
[18]And he diggide eft other pittis, whiche the seruauntis of Abraham his fadir hadden diggid, and whiche the Filisteis hadden stoppid sumtyme, whanne Abraham was deed; and he clepide tho pittis bi the same names, bi whiche his fadir hadde clepid bifore. |
[19]And Isaac's servants dig in the valley, and find there a well of living water, |
[19]Thei diggiden in the stronde, and thei founden wellynge watir. |
[20]and shepherds of Gerar strive with shepherds of Isaac, saying, `The water [is] ours;' and he calleth the name of the well `Strife,' because they have striven habitually with him; |
[20]But also strijf of scheepherdis of Gerare was there ayens the scheepherdis of Isaac, and thei seiden, The watir is oure; wherfor of that that bifelde he clepide the name of the pit fals chaleng. |
[21]and they dig another well, and they strive also for it, and he calleth its name `Hatred.' |
[21]And thei diggiden anothir, and thei stryueden also for that, and Ysaac clepide that pit enemytes. |
[22]And he removeth from thence, and diggeth another well, and they have not striven for it, and he calleth its name Enlargements, and saith, `For -- now hath Jehovah given enlargement to us, and we have been fruitful in the land.' |
[22]And he yede forth fro thennus, and diggide another pit, for which thei stryueden not, therfor he clepid the name of that pit largenesse; and seide, Now God hath alargid vs, and hath maad to encreesse on erthe. |
[23]And he goeth up from thence [to] Beer-Sheba, |
[23]Forsothe he stiede fro that place in to Bersabee, |
[24]and Jehovah appeareth unto him during that night, and saith, `I [am] the God of Abraham thy father, fear not, for I [am] with thee, and have blessed thee, and have multiplied thy seed, because of Abraham My servant;' |
[24]where the Lord God apperide to him in that nyyt; and seide, Y am God of Abraham, thi fadir; nyle thou drede, for Y am with thee, and Y schal blesse thee, and Y schal multiplie thi seed for my seruaunt Abraham. |
[25]and he buildeth there an altar, and preacheth in the name of Jehovah, and stretcheth out there his tent, and there Isaac's servants dig a well. |
[25]And so Ysaac bildide ther an auter to the Lord; and whanne the name of the Lord was inwardli clepid, he stretchide forth a tabernacle; and he comaundide hise seruauntis that thei schulden digge pittis. |
[26]And Abimelech hath gone unto him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phichol head of his host; |
[26]And whanne Abymelech, and Ochosat, hise frendis, and Ficol, duk of knyytis, hadden come fro Geraris to that place, |
[27]and Isaac saith unto them, `Wherefore have ye come unto me, and ye have hated me, and ye send me away from you?' |
[27]Isaac spak to hem, What camen ye to me, a man whom ye hatiden, and puttiden awei fro you? |
[28]And they say, `We have certainly seen that Jehovah hath been with thee, and we say, `Let there be, we pray thee, an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; |
[28]Whiche answeriden, We seiyen that God is with thee, and therfor we seiden now, An ooth be bitwixe vs, and make we a couenaunt of pees, |
[29]do not evil with us, as we have not touched thee, and as we have only done good with thee, and send thee away in peace; thou [art] now blessed of Jehovah.' |
[29]that thou do not ony yuel to vs, as we touchiden `not ony thing of thine, nethir diden that that hirtide thee, but with pees we leften thee encressid bi the blessyng of the Lord. |
[30]And he maketh for them a banquet, and they eat and drink, |
[30]Therfor Isaac made a feeste to hem; and after mete and drynk thei risen eerli, |
[31]and rise early in the morning, and swear one to another, and Isaac sendeth them away, and they go from him in peace. |
[31]and sworen ech to other; and Isaac lefte hem peisibli in to her place. |
[32]And it cometh to pass during that day that Isaac's servants come and declare to him concerning the circumstances of the well which they have digged, and say to him, `We have found water;' |
[32]Lo! forsothe in that dai the seruauntis of Ysaac camen, tellynge to him of the pit which thei hadden diggid, and seiden, We han foundun watir. |
[33]and he calleth it Shebah, [oath,] therefore the name of the city [is] Beer-Sheba, [well of the oath,] unto this day. |
[33]Wherfor Ysaac clepide that pit abundaunce; and the name of the citee was set Bersabee til in to present dai. |
