[1]THE WORD AGAINST DAMASCUS. [1]The burdenH4853 of DamascusH1834. Behold, DamascusH1834 is taken awayH5493[H8716] from being a cityH5892, and it shall be a ruinousH4654 heapH4596.
[2]abandoned for ever, to be a fold and resting-place for flocks, and there shall be none to go after them. [2]The citiesH5892 of AroerH6177 are forsakenH5800[H8803]: they shall be for flocksH5739, which shall lie downH7257[H8804], and none shall make them afraidH2729.[H8688]
[3]And she shall no longer be a strong place for Ephraim to flee to, and there shall no longer be a kingdom in Damascus, or a remnant of Syrians; for thou art no better than the children of Israel, even than their glory; thus saith the Lord of hosts. [3]The fortressH4013 also shall ceaseH7673[H8738] from EphraimH669, and the kingdomH4467 from DamascusH1834, and the remnantH7605 of SyriaH758: they shall be as the gloryH3519 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635.
[4]There shall be in that day a failure of the glory of Jacob, and the riches of his glory shall be shaken. [4]And in that dayH3117 it shall come to pass, that the gloryH3519 of JacobH3290 shall be made thinH1809[H8735], and the fatnessH4924 of his fleshH1320 shall wax leanH7329.[H8735]
[5]And it shall be as if one should gather standing corn, and reap the grain of the ears; and it shall be as if one should gather ears in a rich valley; [5]And it shall be as when the harvestmanH7105 gatherethH622[H8800] the cornH7054, and reapethH7114[H8799] the earsH7641 with his armH2220; and it shall be as he that gatherethH3950[H8764] earsH7641 in the valleyH6010 of RephaimH7497.
[6]and as if there should be left stubble therein, or as it were the berries of an olive tree, two or three on the topmost bough, or as if four or five should be left on their branches; thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel. [6]Yet gleaning grapesH5955 shall be leftH7604[H8738] in it, as the shakingH5363 of an olive treeH2132, twoH8147 or threeH7969 berriesH1620 in the topH7218 of the uppermost boughH534, fourH702 or fiveH2568 in the outmost fruitfulH6509[H8802] branchesH5585 thereof, saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478.
[7]In that day a man shall trust in him that made him, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel. [7]At that dayH3117 shall a manH120 lookH8159[H8799] to his MakerH6213[H8802], and his eyesH5869 shall have respectH7200[H8799] to the HolyH6918 One of IsraelH3478.
[8]And they shall not at all trust in their altars, nor in the works of their hands, which their fingers made; and they shall not look to the trees, nor to their abominations. [8]And he shall not lookH8159[H8799] to the altarsH4196, the workH4639 of his handsH3027, neither shall respectH7200[H8799] that which his fingersH676 have madeH6213[H8804], either the grovesH842, or the imagesH2553.
[9]In that day thy cities shall be deserted, as the Amorites and the Evaeans deserted theirs, because of the children of Israel; and they shall be desolate. [9]In that dayH3117 shall his strongH4581 citiesH5892 be as a forsakenH5800[H8803] boughH2793, and an uppermost branchH534, which they leftH5800[H8804] becauseH6440 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: and there shall be desolationH8077.
[10]Because thou hast forsaken God thy Saviour, and hast not been mindful of the Lord thy helper; therefore shalt thou plant a false plant, and a false seed. [10]Because thou hast forgottenH7911[H8804] the GodH430 of thy salvationH3468, and hast not been mindfulH2142[H8804] of the rockH6697 of thy strengthH4581, therefore shalt thou plantH5193[H8799] pleasantH5282 plantsH5194, and shalt setH2232[H8799] it with strangeH2114[H8801] slipsH2156:
[11]In the day wherein thou shalt plant thou shalt be deceived; but if thou sow in the morning, the seed shall spring up for a crop in the day wherein thou shalt obtain an inheritance, and as a man's father, thou shalt obtain an inheritance for thy sons. [11]In the dayH3117 shalt thou make thy plantH5194 to growH7735[H8770], and in the morningH1242 shalt thou make thy seedH2233 to flourishH6524[H8686]: but the harvestH7105 shall be a heapH5067 in the dayH3117 of griefH2470[H8737] and of desperateH605[H8803] sorrowH3511.
[12]Woe to the multitude of many nations, as the swelling sea, so shall ye be confounded; and the force of many nations shall sound like water; [12]WoeH1945 to the multitudeH1995 of manyH7227 peopleH5971, which make a noiseH1993[H8799] like the noiseH1993[H8800] of the seasH3220; and to the rushingH7588 of nationsH3816, that make a rushing like the rushingH7582[H8735] of mightyH3524 watersH4325!
[13]many nations like much water, as when much water rushes violently: and they shall drive him away, and pursue him afar, as the dust of chaff when men winnow before the wind, and as a storm whirling the dust of the wheel. [13]The nationsH3816 shall rushH7582[H8735] like the rushingH7588 of manyH7227 watersH4325: but God shall rebukeH1605[H8804] them, and they shall fleeH5127[H8804] far offH4801, and shall be chasedH7291[H8795] as the chaffH4671 of the mountainsH2022 beforeH6440 the windH7307, and like a rolling thingH1534 beforeH6440 the whirlwindH5492.
[14]Toward evening, and there shall be grief; before the morning, and he shall not be. This is the portion of them that spoiled you, and the inheritance to them that robbed you of your inheritance. [14]And behold at eveningtideH6256[H6153] troubleH1091; and before the morningH1242 he is not. This is the portionH2506 of them that spoilH8154[H8802] us, and the lotH1486 of them that robH962 usH8802.
