[1]If thou wouldest open the heaven, trembling will take hold upon the mountains from thee, and they shall melt, |
[1]Didst Thou not rend the heavens? Thou didst come down, From thy presence did mountains flow, |
[2]as wax melts before the fire; and fire shall burn up the enemies, and thy name shall be manifest among the adversaries: at thy presence the nations shall be troubled, |
[2](As fire kindleth stubble -- Fire causeth water to boil,) To make known Thy name to Thine adversaries, From Thy presence do nations tremble. |
[3]whenever thou shalt work gloriously; trembling from thee shall take hold upon the mountains. |
[3]In Thy doing fearful things -- we expect not, Thou didst come down, From Thy presence did mountains flow. |
[4]From of old we have not heard, neither have our eyes seen a God beside thee, and thy works which thou wilt perform to them that wait for mercy. |
[4]Even from antiquity [men] have not heard, They have not given ear, Eye hath not seen a God save Thee, He doth work for those waiting for Him. |
[5]For these blessings shall happen to them that work righteousness, and they shall remember thy ways: behold, thou wast angry and we have sinned; therefore we have erred, |
[5]Thou hast met with the rejoicer And the doer of righteousness, In Thy ways they remember Thee, Lo, Thou hast been wroth when we sin, By them [is] continuance, and we are saved. |
[6]and we are all become as unclean, and all our righteousness as a filthy rag: and we have fallen as leaves because of our iniquities; thus the wind shall carry us away. |
[6]And we are as unclean -- all of us, And as a garment passing away, all our righteous acts; And we fade as a leaf -- all of us. And our iniquities as wind do take us away. |
[7]And there is none that calls upon thy name, or that remembers to take hold on thee: for thou hast turned thy face away from us, and hast delivered us up because of our sins. |
[7]And there is none calling in Thy name, Stirring up himself to lay hold on Thee, For Thou hast hid Thy face from us, And thou meltest us away by our iniquities. |
[8]And now, O Lord, thou art our Father, and we are clay, all of us the work of thine hands. |
[8]And now, O Jehovah, thou [art] our Father, We [are] the clay, and Thou our Framer, And the work of Thy hand -- all of us. |
[9]Be not very wroth with us, and remember not our sins for ever; but now look on us, for we are all thy people. |
[9]Be not wroth, O Jehovah, very sore, Nor for ever remember iniquity, Lo, look attentively, we beseech Thee, Thy people [are] we all. |
[10]The city of thy holiness has become desolate, Sion has become as a wilderness, Jerusalem a curse. |
[10]Thy holy cities have been a wilderness, Zion a wilderness hath been, Jerusalem a desolation. |
[11]The house, our sanctuary, and the glory which our fathers blessed, has been burnt with fire: and all our glorious things have gone to ruin. |
[11]Our holy and our beautiful house, Where praise Thee did our fathers, Hath become burnt with fire, And all our desirable things have become a waste. |
[12]And for all these things thou, O Lord, has withholden, thyself, and been silent, and hast brought us very low. |
[12]For these dost Thou refrain Thyself, Jehovah? Thou art silent, and dost afflict us very sore!' |
