| [1]From whence are wars and contentions among you? are they not hence, even of your lusts, that fight in your members? |
[1]πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ πόθεν μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν, ἐκ τῶν ἡδονῶν ὑμῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ὑμῶν; |
| [2]Ye lust, and have not: ye envy, and have indignation, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, and get nothing, because ye ask not. |
[2]ἐπιθυμεῖτε, καὶ οὐκ ἔχετε· φονεύετε καὶ ζηλοῦτε, καὶ οὐ δύνασθε ἐπιτυχεῖν· μάχεσθε καὶ πολεμεῖτε. οὐκ ἔχετε διὰ τὸ μὴ αἰτεῖσθαι ὑμᾶς· |
| [3]Ye ask, and receive not because ye ask amiss, that ye might consume it on your lusts. |
[3]αἰτεῖτε καὶ οὐ λαμβάνετε, διότι κακῶς αἰτεῖσθε, ἵνα ἐν ταῖς ἡδοναῖς ὑμῶν δαπανήσητε. |
| [4]Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the amity of the world is the enmity of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world, maketh himself the enemy of God. |
[4]μοιχαλίδες, οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἡ φιλία τοῦ κόσμου ἔχθρα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν; ὃς ἐὰν οὗν βουληθῇ φίλος εἶναι τοῦ κόσμου, ἐχθρὸς τοῦ θεοῦ καθίσταται. |
| [5]Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us, lusteth after envy? |
[5]ἢ δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς ἡ γραφὴ λέγει, πρὸς φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ κατῴκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν; |
| [6]But the Scripture offereth more grace, and therefore saith, God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. |
[6]μείζονα δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν· διὸ λέγει, ὁ θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν. |
| [7]Submit yourselves to God: resist the devil, and he will flee from you. |
[7]ὑποτάγητε οὗν τῶ θεῶ· ἀντίστητε δὲ τῶ διαβόλῳ, καὶ φεύξεται ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν· |
| [8]Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purge your hearts, ye wavering minded. |
[8]ἐγγίσατε τῶ θεῶ, καὶ ἐγγιεῖ ὑμῖν. καθαρίσατε χεῖρας, ἁμαρτωλοί, καὶ ἁγνίσατε καρδίας, δίψυχοι. |
| [9]Suffer afflictions, and sorrow ye, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into heaviness. |
[9]ταλαιπωρήσατε καὶ πενθήσατε καὶ κλαύσατε· ὁ γέλως ὑμῶν εἰς πένθος μετατραπήτω καὶ ἡ χαρὰ εἰς κατήφειαν. |
| [10]Cast down yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. |
[10]ταπεινώθητε ἐνώπιον κυρίου, καὶ ὑψώσει ὑμᾶς. |
| [11]Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, or he that condemneth his brother, speaketh evil of the Law, and condemneth the Law: and if thou condemnest the Law, thou art not an observer of the Law, but a judge. |
[11]μὴ καταλαλεῖτε ἀλλήλων, ἀδελφοί· ὁ καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ ἢ κρίνων τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καταλαλεῖ νόμου καὶ κρίνει νόμον· εἰ δὲ νόμον κρίνεις, οὐκ εἶ ποιητὴς νόμου ἀλλὰ κριτής. |
| [12]There is one Lawgiver, which is able to save, and to destroy. Who art thou that judgest another man? |
[12]εἷς ἐστιν [ὁ] νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής, ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι· σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ, ὁ κρίνων τὸν πλησίον; |
| [13]Go to now ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain, |
[13]ἄγε νῦν οἱ λέγοντες, σήμερον ἢ αὔριον πορευσόμεθα εἰς τήνδε τὴν πόλιν καὶ ποιήσομεν ἐκεῖ ἐνιαυτὸν καὶ ἐμπορευσόμεθα καὶ κερδήσομεν· |
| [14](And yet ye cannot tell what shall be tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and afterward vanisheth away) |
[14]οἵτινες οὐκ ἐπίστασθε τὸ τῆς αὔριον ποία ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν. ἀτμὶς γάρ ἐστε ἡ πρὸς ὀλίγον φαινομένη, ἔπειτα καὶ ἀφανιζομένη· |
| [15]For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, and, If we live, we will do this or that. |
[15]ἀντὶ τοῦ λέγειν ὑμᾶς, ἐὰν ὁ κύριος θελήσῃ, καὶ ζήσομεν καὶ ποιήσομεν τοῦτο ἢ ἐκεῖνο. |
| [16]But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. |
[16]νῦν δὲ καυχᾶσθε ἐν ταῖς ἀλαζονείαις ὑμῶν· πᾶσα καύχησις τοιαύτη πονηρά ἐστιν. |
| [17]Therefore, to him that knoweth how to do well, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. |
[17]εἰδότι οὗν καλὸν ποιεῖν καὶ μὴ ποιοῦντι, ἁμαρτία αὐτῶ ἐστιν. |
