| [1]And a messenger of Jehovah goeth up from Gilgal unto Bochim, |
[1]And an angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 came upH5927[H8799] from GilgalH1537 to BochimH1066, and saidH559[H8799], I made you to go upH5927[H8686] out of EgyptH4714, and have broughtH935[H8686] you unto the landH776 which I swareH7650[H8738] unto your fathersH1; and I saidH559[H8799], I will neverH5769 breakH6565[H8686] my covenant with youH1285. |
| [2]and saith, `I cause you to come up out of Egypt, and bring you in unto the land which I have sworn to your fathers, and say, I do not break My covenant with you to the age; and ye -- ye make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land -- their altars ye break down; and ye have not hearkened to My voice -- what [is] this ye have done? |
[2]And ye shall makeH3772[H8799] no leagueH1285 with the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of this landH776; ye shall throw downH5422[H8799] their altarsH4196: but ye have not obeyedH8085[H8804] my voiceH6963: why have ye doneH6213 thisH8804? |
| [3]And I also have said, I do not cast them out from your presence, and they have been to you for adversaries, and their gods are to you for a snare.' |
[3]Wherefore I also saidH559[H8804], I will not drive them outH1644[H8762] from beforeH6440 you; but they shall be as thorns in your sidesH6654, and their godsH430 shall be a snare unto youH4170. |
| [4]And it cometh to pass, when the messenger of Jehovah speaketh these words unto all the sons of Israel, that the people lift up their voice and weep, |
[4]And it came to pass, when the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 spakeH1696[H8763] these wordsH1697 unto all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, that the peopleH5971 lifted upH5375[H8799] their voiceH6963, and weptH1058.[H8799] |
| [5]and they call the name of that place Bochim, and sacrifice there to Jehovah. |
[5]And they calledH7121[H8799] the nameH8034 of that placeH4725 BochimH1066: and they sacrificedH2076[H8799] there unto the LORDH3068. |
| [6]And Joshua sendeth the people away, and the sons of Israel go, each to his inheritance, to possess the land; |
[6]And when JoshuaH3091 had let the peopleH5971 goH7971[H8762], the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 wentH3212[H8799] every manH376 unto his inheritanceH5159 to possessH3423[H8800] the landH776. |
| [7]and the people serve Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who prolonged days after Joshua, who saw all the great work of Jehovah which He did to Israel. |
[7]And the peopleH5971 servedH5647[H8799] the LORDH3068 all the daysH3117 of JoshuaH3091, and all the daysH3117 of the eldersH2205 that outlivedH748[H8689][H3117][H310] JoshuaH3091, who had seenH7200[H8804] all the greatH1419 worksH4639 of the LORDH3068, that he didH6213[H8804] for IsraelH3478. |
| [8]And Joshua son of Nun, servant of Jehovah, dieth, a son of a hundred and ten years, |
[8]And JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068, diedH4191[H8799], being an hundredH3967 and tenH6235 yearsH8141 oldH1121. |
| [9]and they bury him in the border of his inheritance, in Timnath-Heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of mount Gaash; |
[9]And they buriedH6912[H8799] him in the borderH1366 of his inheritanceH5159 in TimnathheresH8556, in the mountH2022 of EphraimH669, on the north sideH6828 of the hillH2022 GaashH1608. |
| [10]and also all that generation have been gathered unto their fathers, and another generation riseth after them who have not known Jehovah, and even the work which He hath done to Israel. |
[10]And also all that generationH1755 were gatheredH622[H8738] unto their fathersH1: and there aroseH6965[H8799] anotherH312 generationH1755 afterH310 them, which knewH3045[H8804] not the LORDH3068, nor yet the worksH4639 which he had doneH6213[H8804] for IsraelH3478. |
| [11]And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and serve the Baalim, |
[11]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 didH6213[H8799] evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068, and servedH5647[H8799] BaalimH1168: |
| [12]and forsake Jehovah, God of their fathers, who bringeth them out from the land of Egypt, and go after other gods (of the gods of the peoples who [are] round about them), and bow themselves to them, and provoke Jehovah, |
[12]And they forsookH5800[H8799] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of their fathersH1, which brought them outH3318[H8688] of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, and followedH3212[H8799][H310] otherH312 godsH430, of the godsH430 of the peopleH5971 that were round aboutH5439 them, and bowedH7812[H8691] themselves unto them, and provoked the LORDH3068 to angerH3707.[H8686] |
| [13]yea, they forsake Jehovah, and do service to Baal and to Ashtaroth. |
[13]And they forsookH5800[H8799] the LORDH3068, and servedH5647[H8799] BaalH1168 and AshtarothH6252. |
| [14]And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He giveth them into the hand of spoilers, and they spoil them, and He selleth them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they have not been able any more to stand before their enemies; |
[14]And the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 was hotH2734[H8799] against IsraelH3478, and he deliveredH5414[H8799] them into the handsH3027 of spoilersH8154[H8802] that spoiledH8155[H8799] them, and he soldH4376[H8799] them into the handsH3027 of their enemiesH341[H8802] round aboutH5439, so that they couldH3201[H8804] not any longerH5750 standH5975[H8800] beforeH6440 their enemiesH341.[H8802] |
| [15]in every [place] where they have gone out, the hand of Jehovah hath been against them for evil, as Jehovah hath spoken, and as Jehovah hath sworn to them, and they are distressed -- greatly. |
[15]Whithersoever they went outH3318[H8804], the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 was against them for evilH7451, as the LORDH3068 had saidH1696[H8765], and as the LORDH3068 had swornH7650[H8738] unto them: and they were greatlyH3966 distressedH3334.[H8799] |
| [16]And Jehovah raiseth up judges, and they save them from the hand of their spoilers; |
[16]Nevertheless the LORDH3068 raised upH6965[H8686] judgesH8199[H8802], which deliveredH3467[H8686] them out of the handH3027 of those that spoiledH8154 themH8802. |
| [17]and also unto their judges they have not hearkened, but have gone a-whoring after other gods, and bow themselves to them; they have turned aside [with] haste out of the way [in] which their fathers walked to obey the commands of Jehovah -- they have not done so. |
[17]And yet they would not hearkenH8085[H8804] unto their judgesH8199[H8802], but they went a whoringH2181[H8804] afterH310 otherH312 godsH430, and bowedH7812[H8691] themselves unto them: they turnedH5493[H8804] quicklyH4118 out of the wayH1870 which their fathersH1 walked inH1980[H8804], obeyingH8085[H8800] the commandmentsH4687 of the LORDH3068; but they didH6213 not soH8804. |
| [18]And when Jehovah raised up to them judges -- then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away. |
[18]And when the LORDH3068 raisedH6965[H8689] them up judgesH8199[H8802], then the LORDH3068 was with the judgeH8199[H8802], and deliveredH3467[H8689] them out of the handH3027 of their enemiesH341[H8802] all the daysH3117 of the judgeH8199[H8802]: for it repentedH5162[H8735] the LORDH3068 becauseH6440 of their groaningsH5009 by reason of them that oppressedH3905[H8801] them and vexedH1766 themH8802. |
| [19]And it hath come to pass, at the death of the judge -- they turn back and have done corruptly above their fathers, to go after other gods, to serve them, and to bow themselves to them; they have not fallen from their doings, and from their stiff way. |
[19]And it came to pass, when the judgeH8199[H8802] was deadH4194, that they returnedH7725[H8799], and corruptedH7843[H8689] themselves more than their fathersH1, in followingH3212[H8800][H310] otherH312 godsH430 to serveH5647[H8800] them, and to bow downH7812[H8692] unto them; they ceasedH5307[H8689] not from their own doingsH4611, nor from their stubbornH7186 wayH1870. |
| [20]And the anger of Jehovah doth burn against Israel, and He saith, `Because that this nation have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened to My voice -- |
[20]And the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 was hotH2734[H8799] against IsraelH3478; and he saidH559[H8799], Because that this peopleH1471 hath transgressedH5674[H8804] my covenantH1285 which I commandedH6680[H8765] their fathersH1, and have not hearkenedH8085[H8804] unto my voiceH6963; |
| [21]I also continue not to dispossess any from before them of the nations which Joshua hath left when he dieth, |
[21]I also will not henceforthH3254[H8686] drive outH3423[H8687] anyH376 from beforeH6440 them of the nationsH1471 which JoshuaH3091 leftH5800[H8804] when he diedH4191:[H8799] |
| [22]in order to try Israel by them, whether they are keeping the way of Jehovah, to go in it, as their fathers kept [it] or not.' |
[22]That through them I may proveH5254[H8763] IsraelH3478, whether they will keepH8104[H8802] the wayH1870 of the LORDH3068 to walkH3212[H8800] therein, as their fathersH1 did keepH8104 it, or notH8804. |
| [23]And Jehovah leaveth these nations, so as not to dispossess them hastily, and did not give them into the hand of Joshua. |
[23]Therefore the LORDH3068 leftH3240[H8686] those nationsH1471, withoutH1115 driving them outH3423[H8687] hastilyH4118; neither deliveredH5414[H8804] he them into the handH3027 of JoshuaH3091. |
