[1]NowG1161 a certainG5100 man wasG2258[G5713] sickG770[G5723], named LazarusG2976, ofG575 BethanyG963,[G1537] the townG2968 of MaryG3137 andG2532 herG846 sisterG79 MarthaG3136. [1]And a certain man was sick, named Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary, and her sister Martha.
[2][G1161](It wasG2258[G5713] that MaryG3137 whichG3588 anointedG218[G5660] the LordG2962 with ointmentG3464, andG2532 wipedG1591[G5660] hisG846 feetG4228 with herG846 hairG2359, whoseG3739 brotherG80 LazarusG2976 was sickG770.[G5707]) [2](And it was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
[3]ThereforeG3767 his sistersG79 sentG649[G5656] untoG4314 himG846, sayingG3004[G5723], LordG2962, beholdG2396, he whomG3739 thou lovestG5368[G5719] is sickG770.[G5719] [3]Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest, is sick.
[4]WhenG1161 JesusG2424 heardG191[G5660] that, he saidG2036[G5627], ThisG3778 sicknessG769 isG2076[G5748] notG3756 untoG4314 deathG2288, butG235 forG5228 the gloryG1391 of GodG2316, thatG2443 the SonG5207 of GodG2316 might be glorifiedG1392[G5686] therebyG1223.[G846] [4]When Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
[5]NowG1161 JesusG2424 lovedG25[G5707] MarthaG3136, andG2532 herG846 sisterG79, andG2532 LazarusG2976. [5]Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
[6]WhenG5613 he had heardG191[G5656] thereforeG3767 thatG3754 he was sickG770[G5719], he abodeG3306[G5656] twoG1417 daysG2250 stillG5119[G3303] inG1722 the same placeG5117 whereG3739 he wasG2258.[G5713] [6]And after he had heard that he was sick, yet abode he two days still in the same place where he was.
[7]ThenG1899 afterG3326 thatG5124 saith heG3004[G5719] to his disciplesG3101, Let us goG71[G5725] intoG1519 JudaeaG2449 againG3825. [7]Then after that, said he to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again.
[8]His disciplesG3101 sayG3004[G5719] unto himG846, MasterG4461, the JewsG2453 of lateG3568 soughtG2212[G5707] to stoneG3034[G5658] theeG4571; andG2532 goest thouG5217[G5719] thitherG1563 againG3825? [8]The disciples said unto him, Master, the Jews lately sought to stone thee, and dost thou go thither again?
[9]JesusG2424 answeredG611[G5662], Are thereG1526[G5748] notG3780 twelveG1427 hoursG5610 in the dayG2250? IfG1437 any manG5100 walkG4043[G5725] inG1722 the dayG2250, he stumblethG4350[G5719] notG3756, becauseG3754 he seethG991[G5719] the lightG5457 of thisG5127 worldG2889. [9]Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
[10]ButG1161 ifG1437 a manG5100 walkG4043[G5725] inG1722 the nightG3571, he stumblethG4350[G5719], becauseG3754 there isG2076[G5748] noG3756 lightG5457 inG1722 himG846. [10]But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
[11]These thingsG5023 saidG2036[G5627] heG846: andG2532 afterG3326 thatG5124 he saithG3004[G5719] unto themG846, OurG2257 friendG5384 LazarusG2976 sleepethG2837[G5769]; butG235 I goG4198[G5736], thatG2443 I may awakeG1852 himG846 out of sleepG1852.[G5661] [11]These things spake he, and after he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth: but I go to wake him up.
[12]ThenG3767 saidG2036[G5627] hisG846 disciplesG3101, LordG2962, ifG1487 he sleepG2837[G5769], he shall do wellG4982.[G5701] [12]Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall be safe.
[13]HowbeitG1161 JesusG2424 spakeG2046[G5715] ofG4012 hisG846 deathG2288: butG1161 theyG1565 thoughtG1380[G5656] thatG3754 he had spokenG3004[G5719] ofG4012 taking of restG2838 in sleepG5258. [13]Howbeit, Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of the natural sleep.
[14]ThenG5119[G3767] saidG2036[G5627] JesusG2424 unto themG846 plainlyG3954, LazarusG2976 is deadG599.[G5627] [14]Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
[15]AndG2532 I am gladG5463[G5719] forG1223 your sakesG5209 thatG3754 I wasG2252[G5713][G5625][G2258][G5713] notG3756 thereG1563, to the intentG2443 ye may believeG4100[G5661]; neverthelessG235 let us goG71[G5725] untoG4314 himG846. [15]And I am glad for your sakes, that I was not there, that ye may believe: but let us go unto him.
[16]ThenG3767 saidG2036[G5627] ThomasG2381, whichG3588 is calledG3004[G5746] DidymusG1324, unto his fellowdisciplesG4827, Let usG71 alsoG2532 goG71[G5725], thatG2443 weG2249 may dieG599[G5632] withG3326 himG846. [16]Then said Thomas (which is called Didymus) unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
[17]ThenG3767 when JesusG2424 cameG2064[G5631], he foundG2147[G5627] that heG846 hadG2192[G5723] lain inG1722 the graveG3419 fourG5064 daysG2250 alreadyG2235. [17]Then came Jesus, and found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
[18]NowG1161 BethanyG963 wasG2258[G5713] nighG1451 unto JerusalemG2414, aboutG5613 fifteenG1178 furlongsG4712 offG575: [18](Now Bethany was near unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)
[19]AndG2532 manyG4183 ofG1537 the JewsG2453 cameG2064[G5715] toG4314 MarthaG3136 andG2532 MaryG3137[G4012], toG2443 comfortG3888[G5667] themG846 concerningG4012 theirG846 brotherG80. [19]And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary to comfort them for their brother.
[20]ThenG3767 MarthaG3136, as soon asG5613 she heardG191[G5656] thatG3754 JesusG2424 was comingG2064[G5736], went and metG5221[G5656] himG846: butG1161 MaryG3137 satG2516[G5711] still inG1722 the houseG3624. [20]Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him: but Mary sat still in the house.
[21]ThenG3767 saidG2036[G5627] MarthaG3136 untoG4314 JesusG2424, LordG2962, ifG1487 thou hadst beenG2258[G5713] hereG5602, myG3450 brotherG80[G302] hadG2348 notG3756 diedG2348.[G5715] [21]Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not been dead.
[22]ButG235 I knowG1492[G5758], that evenG2532 nowG3568, whatsoeverG3754[G3745][G302] thou wilt askG154[G5672] of GodG2316, GodG2316 will giveG1325[G5692] it theeG4671. [22]But now I know also, that whatsoever thou askest of God, God will give it thee.
[23]JesusG2424 saithG3004[G5719] unto herG846, ThyG4675 brotherG80 shall rise againG450.[G5698] [23]Jesus said unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
[24]MarthaG3136 saithG3004[G5719] unto himG846, I knowG1492[G5758] thatG3754 he shall rise againG450[G5698] inG1722 the resurrectionG386 atG1722 the lastG2078 dayG2250. [24]Martha said unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
[25]JesusG2424 saidG2036[G5627] unto herG846, IG1473 amG1510[G5748] the resurrectionG386, andG2532 the lifeG2222: he that believethG4100[G5723] inG1519 meG1691, thoughG2579 he were deadG599[G5632], yet shall he liveG2198:[G5695] [25]Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.
[26]AndG2532 whosoeverG3956 livethG2198[G5723] andG2532 believethG4100[G5723] inG1519 meG1691 shallG599 neverG3364[G1519][G165] dieG599[G5632]. Believest thouG4100[G5719] thisG5124? [26]And whosoever liveth, and believeth in me, shall never die. Believeth thou this?
[27]She saithG3004[G5719] unto himG846, YeaG3483, LordG2962: IG1473 believeG4100[G5758] thatG3754 thouG4771 artG1488[G5748] the ChristG5547, the SonG5207 of GodG2316, whichG3588 should comeG2064[G5740] intoG1519 the worldG2889. [27]She said unto him, Yea, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ the Son of God, which should come into the world.
[28]AndG2532 when she hadG2036 soG5023 saidG2036[G5631], she went her wayG565[G5627], andG2532 calledG5455[G5656] MaryG3137 herG846 sisterG79 secretlyG2977, sayingG2036[G5631], The MasterG1320 is comeG3918[G5748], andG2532 calleth forG5455[G5719] theeG4571. [28]And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
[29]As soon asG5613 sheG1565 heardG191[G5656] that, she aroseG1453[G5743] quicklyG5035, andG2532 cameG2064[G5736] untoG4314 himG846. [29]And when she heard it, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
[30]NowG1161 JesusG2424 wasG2064 not yetG3768 comeG2064[G5715] intoG1519 the townG2968, butG235 wasG2258[G5713] inG1722 that placeG5117 whereG3699 MarthaG3136 metG5221[G5656] himG846. [30]For Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met him.
[31]The JewsG2453 thenG3767 whichG3588 wereG5607[G5752] withG3326 herG846 inG1722 the houseG3614, andG2532 comfortedG3888[G5740] herG846, when they sawG1492[G5631] MaryG3137, thatG3754 she rose upG450[G5627] hastilyG5030 andG2532 went outG1831[G5627], followedG190[G5656] herG846, sayingG3004[G5723],[G3754] She goethG5217[G5719] untoG1519 the graveG3419 toG2443 weepG2799[G5661] thereG1563. [31]The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily, and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave, to weep there.
[32]ThenG3767 whenG5613 MaryG3137 was comeG2064[G5627] whereG3699 JesusG2424 wasG2258[G5713], and sawG1492[G5631] himG846, she fell downG4098[G5627] atG1519 hisG846 feetG4228, sayingG3004[G5723] unto himG846, LordG2962, ifG1487 thou hadst beenG2258[G5713] hereG5602, myG3450 brotherG80 hadG302 notG3756 diedG599.[G5627] [32]Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not been dead.
[33]WhenG5613 JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 sawG1492[G5627] herG846 weepingG2799[G5723], andG2532 the JewsG2453 also weepingG2799[G5723] which cameG4905[G5631] with herG846, he groanedG1690[G5662] in the spiritG4151, andG2532 was troubledG5015[G5656][G1438] [33]When Jesus therefore saw her weep, and the Jews also weep which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled in himself,
[34]AndG2532 saidG2036[G5627], WhereG4226 have ye laidG5087[G5758] himG846? They saidG3004[G5719] unto himG846, LordG2962, comeG2064[G5736] andG2532 seeG1492.[G5657] [34]And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come, and see.
[35]JesusG2424 weptG1145.[G5656] [35]And Jesus wept.
[36]ThenG3767 saidG3004[G5707] the JewsG2453, BeholdG2396 howG4459 he lovedG5368[G5707] himG846! [36]Then said the Jews, Behold, how he loved him.
[37]AndG1161 someG5100 ofG1537 themG846 saidG2036[G5627], CouldG1410[G5711] notG3756 this manG3778, whichG3588 openedG455[G5660] the eyesG3788 of the blindG5185, have causedG4160[G5658] thatG2443 evenG2532 this manG3778 shouldG599 notG3361 have diedG599?[G5632] [37]And some of them said, Could not he, which opened the eyes of the blind, have made also, that this man should not have died?
[38]JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 againG3825 groaningG1690[G5740] inG1722 himselfG1438 comethG2064[G5736] toG1519 the graveG3419.[G1161] It wasG2258[G5713] a caveG4693, andG2532 a stoneG3037 layG1945[G5711] uponG1909 itG846. [38]Jesus therefore again groaned in himself, and came to the grave. And it was a cave, and a stone was laid upon it.
[39]JesusG2424 saidG3004[G5719], Take ye awayG142[G5657] the stoneG3037. MarthaG3136, the sisterG79 of him that was deadG2348[G5761], saithG3004[G5719] unto himG846, LordG2962, by this timeG2235 he stinkethG3605[G5719]: forG1063 he hath beenG2076[G5748] dead four daysG5066. [39]Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, said unto him, Lord, he stinketh already: for he hath been dead four days.
[40]JesusG2424 saithG3004[G5719] unto herG846, Said IG2036[G5627] notG3756 unto theeG4671, thatG3754, ifG1437 thou wouldest believeG4100[G5661], thou shouldest seeG3700[G5695] the gloryG1391 of GodG2316? [40]Jesus said unto her, Said I not unto thee, that if thou didst believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
[41]ThenG3767 they took awayG142[G5656] the stoneG3037 from the place whereG3757 the deadG2348[G5761] wasG2258[G5713] laidG2749[G5740]. AndG1161 JesusG2424 liftedG142[G5656] upG507 his eyesG3788, andG2532 saidG2036[G5627], FatherG3962, I thankG2168[G5719] theeG4671 thatG3754 thou hast heardG191[G5656] meG3450. [41]Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lift up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee, because thou hast heard me.
[42]AndG1161 IG1473 knewG1492[G5715] thatG3754 thou hearestG191[G5719] meG3450 alwaysG3842: butG235 becauseG1223 of the peopleG3793 whichG3588 stand byG4026[G5761] I saidG2036[G5627] it, thatG2443 they may believeG4100[G5661] thatG3754 thouG4771 hast sentG649[G5656] meG3165. [42]I know that thou hearest me always, but because of the people that stand by, I said it, that they may believe, that thou hast sent me.
[43]AndG2532 when he thusG5023 had spokenG2036[G5631], he criedG2905[G5656] with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, LazarusG2976, comeG1204[G5773] forthG1854. [43]As he had spoken these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
[44]AndG2532 he that was deadG2348[G5761] came forthG1831[G5627], boundG1210[G5772] handG5495 andG2532 footG4228 with graveclothesG2750: andG2532 hisG846 faceG3799 was bound aboutG4019[G5718] with a napkinG4676. JesusG2424 saithG3004[G5719] unto themG846, LooseG3089[G5657] himG846, andG2532 let himG863[G5628] goG5217.[G5721] [44]Then he that was dead, came forth, bound hand and foot with bands, and his face was bound with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
[45]ThenG3767 manyG4183 ofG1537 the JewsG2453 whichG3588 cameG2064[G5631] toG4314 MaryG3137, andG2532 had seenG2300[G5666] the things whichG3739 JesusG2424 didG4160[G5656], believedG4100[G5656] onG1519 himG846. [45]Then many of the Jews, which came to Mary, and had seen the things, which Jesus did, believed in him.
[46]ButG1161 someG5100 ofG1537 themG846 went their waysG565[G5627] toG4314 the PhariseesG5330, andG2532 toldG2036[G5627] themG846 what thingsG3739 JesusG2424 had doneG4160.[G5656] [46]But some of them went their way to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
[47]ThenG3767 gatheredG4863[G5627] the chief priestsG749 andG2532 the PhariseesG5330 a councilG4892, andG2532 saidG3004[G5707], WhatG5101 do weG4160[G5719]? forG3754 thisG3778 manG444 doethG4160[G5719] manyG4183 miraclesG4592. [47]Then gathered the high Priests, and the Pharisees a council, and said, What shall we do? For this man doeth many miracles.
[48]IfG1437 we letG863 himG846 thusG3779 aloneG863[G5632], allG3956 men will believeG4100[G5692] onG1519 himG846: andG2532 the RomansG4514 shall comeG2064[G5695] andG2532 take awayG142[G5692] bothG2532 ourG2257 placeG5117 andG2532 nationG1484. [48]If we let him thus alone, all men will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place, and the nation.
[49]AndG1161 oneG1520[G5100] ofG1537 themG846, named CaiaphasG2533, beingG5607[G5752] the high priestG749 that sameG1565 yearG1763, saidG2036[G5627] unto themG846, YeG5210 knowG1492[G5758] G3756nothing at allG3762 [49]Then one of them named Caiaphas, which was the high Priest that same year, said unto them, Ye perceive nothing at all,
[50]NorG3761 considerG1260[G5736] thatG3754 it is expedientG4851[G5719] for usG2254, thatG2443 oneG1520 manG444 should dieG599[G5632] forG5228 the peopleG2992, andG2532 that the wholeG3650 nationG1484 perishG622[G5643] notG3361. [50]Nor yet do you consider that it is expedient for us, that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
[51]AndG1161 thisG5124 spake heG2036[G5627] notG3756 ofG575 himselfG1438: butG235 beingG5607[G5752] high priestG749 thatG1565 yearG1763, he prophesiedG4395[G5656] thatG3754 JesusG2424 shouldG3195[G5707] dieG599[G5721] for thatG5228 nationG1484; [51]This spake he not of himself: but being high Priest that same year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation:
[52]AndG2532 notG3756 for thatG5228 nationG1484 onlyG3440, butG235 thatG2443 alsoG2532 he should gather togetherG4863[G5632] inG1519 oneG1520 the childrenG5043 of GodG2316 that were scattered abroadG1287.[G5772] [52]And not for the nation only, but that he should gather together in one the children of God, which were scattered.
[53]ThenG3767 fromG575 thatG1565 dayG2250 forth they took counsel togetherG4823[G5668] for toG2443 putG615 himG846 to deathG615.[G5725] [53]Then from that day forth they consulted together, to put him to death.
[54]JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 walkedG4043[G5707] no moreG3765 openlyG3954 amongG1722 the JewsG2453; butG235 wentG565[G5627] thenceG1564 untoG1519 a countryG5561 nearG1451 to the wildernessG2048, intoG1519 a cityG4172 calledG3004[G5746] EphraimG2187, and thereG2546 continuedG1304[G5707] withG3326 hisG846 disciplesG3101. [54]Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
[55]AndG1161 the Jews'G2453 passoverG3957 wasG2258[G5713] nigh at handG1451: andG2532 manyG4183 wentG305[G5627] out ofG1537 the countryG5561 upG1519 to JerusalemG2414 beforeG4253 the passoverG3957, toG2443 purifyG48[G5661] themselvesG1438. [55]And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
[56]ThenG3767 sought they forG2212[G5707] JesusG2424, andG2532 spakeG3004[G5707] amongG3326 themselvesG240, as they stoodG2476[G5761] inG1722 the templeG2411, WhatG5101 thinkG1380[G5719] yeG5213, thatG3754 he willG2064 notG3364 comeG2064[G5632] toG1519 the feastG1859? [56]Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the Temple, What think ye, that he cometh not to the feast?
[57]NowG1161 bothG2532 the chief priestsG749 andG2532 the PhariseesG5330 had givenG1325[G5715] a commandmentG1785, thatG2443, ifG1437 any manG5100 knewG1097[G5632] whereG4226 he wereG2076[G5748], he should shewG3377[G5661] it, thatG3704 they might takeG4084[G5661] himG846. [57]Now both the high Priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might take him.
