[1]ThenG5119 PilateG4091 thereforeG3767 tookG2983[G5627] JesusG2424, andG2532 scourgedG3146 himG5656. [1]Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
[2]AndG2532 the soldiersG4757 plattedG4120[G5660] a crownG4735 ofG1537 thornsG173, and put it onG2007[G5656] hisG846 headG2776, andG2532 they put onG4016[G5627] himG846 a purpleG4210 robeG2440, [2]And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple garment,
[3]AndG2532 saidG3004[G5707], HailG5463[G5720], KingG935 of the JewsG2453! andG2532 they smoteG1325[G5707] himG846 with their handsG4475. [3]And said, Hail, King of the Jews. And they smote him with their rods.
[4]PilateG4091 thereforeG3767 wentG1831[G5627] forthG1854 againG3825, andG2532 saithG3004[G5719] unto themG846, BeholdG2396, I bringG71[G5719] himG846 forthG1854 to youG5213, thatG2443 ye may knowG1097[G5632] thatG3754 I findG2147[G5719] noG3762 faultG156 inG1722 himG846. [4]Then Pilate went forth again, and said unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know, that I find no fault in him at all.
[5]ThenG3767 cameG1831[G5627] JesusG2424 forthG1854, wearingG5409[G5723] the crownG4735 of thornsG174, andG2532 the purpleG4210 robeG2440. AndG2532 Pilate saithG3004[G5719] unto themG846, BeholdG2396 the manG444! [5]Then came Jesus forth wearing a crown of thorns, and a purple garment. And Pilate said unto them, Behold the man.
[6]WhenG3753 the chief priestsG749 thereforeG3767 andG2532 officersG5257 sawG1492[G5627] himG846, they cried outG2905[G5656], sayingG3004[G5723], CrucifyG4717[G5657] him, crucifyG4717[G5657] him. PilateG4091 saithG3004[G5719] unto themG846, TakeG2983[G5628] yeG5210 himG846, andG2532 crucifyG4717[G5657] him: forG1063 IG1473 findG2147[G5719] noG3756 faultG156 inG1722 himG846. [6]Then when the high Priests and officers saw him, they cried, saying, Crucify, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Take ye him and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
[7]The JewsG2453 answeredG611[G5662] himG846, WeG2249 haveG2192[G5719] a lawG3551, andG2532 byG2596 ourG2257 lawG3551 he oughtG3784[G5719] to dieG599[G5629], becauseG3754 he madeG4160[G5656] himselfG1438 the SonG5207 of GodG2316. [7]The Jews answered him, We have a Law, and by our Law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
[8]WhenG3753 PilateG4091 thereforeG3767 heardG191[G5656] thatG5126 sayingG3056, he wasG5399 the moreG3123 G5399afraidG5675 [8]When Pilate then heard that word, he was the more afraid,
[9]AndG2532 wentG1525[G5627] againG3825 intoG1519 the judgment hallG4232, andG2532 saithG3004[G5719] unto JesusG2424, WhenceG4159 artG1488[G5748] thouG4771? ButG1161 JesusG2424 gaveG1325[G5656] himG846 noG3756 answerG612. [9]And went again into the common hall and said unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him none answer.
[10]ThenG3767 saithG3004[G5719] PilateG4091 unto himG846, Speakest thouG2980[G5719] notG3756 unto meG1698? knowest thouG1492[G5758] notG3756 thatG3754 I haveG2192[G5719] powerG1849 to crucifyG4717[G5658] theeG4571, andG2532 haveG2192[G5719] powerG1849 to releaseG630[G5658] theeG4571? [10]Then said Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to loose thee?
[11]JesusG2424 answeredG611[G5662], Thou couldest haveG2192[G5707] noG3756 powerG1849 at all againstG3762[G2596] meG1700, exceptG1508 it wereG2258[G5713] givenG1325[G5772] theeG4671 from aboveG509: thereforeG5124[G1223] he that deliveredG3860[G5723] meG3165 unto theeG4671 hathG2192[G5719] the greaterG3187 sinG266. [11]Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee, hath the greater sin.
[12]And fromG1537 thenceforthG5127 PilateG4091 soughtG2212[G5707] to releaseG630[G5658] himG846: butG1161 the JewsG2453 cried outG2896[G5707], sayingG3004[G5723], IfG1437 thou letG630 this manG5126 goG630[G5661], thou artG1488[G5748] notG3756 Caesar'sG2541 friendG5384: whosoeverG3956 makethG4160[G5723] himselfG846 a kingG935 speaketh againstG483[G5719] CaesarG2541. [12]From thence forth Pilate sought to loose him, but the Jews cried, saying, If thou deliver him, thou art not Caesars friend: for whosoever maketh himself a King, speaketh against Caesar.
[13]When PilateG4091 thereforeG3767 heardG191[G5660] thatG5126 sayingG3056, he broughtG71[G5627] JesusG2424 forthG1854, andG2532 sat downG2523[G5656] inG1909 the judgment seatG968 inG1519 a placeG5117 that is calledG3004[G5746] the PavementG3038, butG1161 in the HebrewG1447, GabbathaG1042. [13]When Pilate heard that word, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place called the Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
[14]AndG1161 it wasG2258[G5713] the preparationG3904 of the passoverG3957, andG1161 aboutG5616 the sixthG1623 hourG5610: andG2532 he saithG3004[G5719] unto the JewsG2453, BeholdG2396 yourG5216 KingG935! [14]And it was the Preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour: and he said unto the Jews, Behold your King.
[15]ButG1161 they cried outG2905[G5656], Away withG142[G5657] him, away withG142[G5657] him, crucifyG4717[G5657] himG846. PilateG4091 saithG3004[G5719] unto themG846, Shall I crucifyG4717[G5692] yourG5216 KingG935? The chief priestsG749 answeredG611[G5662], We haveG2192[G5719] noG3756 kingG935 butG1508 CaesarG2541. [15]But they cried, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The high Priests answered, We have no King but Caesar.
[16]ThenG5119 delivered heG3860[G5656] himG846 thereforeG3767 unto themG846 toG2443 be crucifiedG4717[G5686]. AndG1161 they tookG3880[G5627] JesusG2424, andG2532 led him awayG520.[G5627] [16]Then delivered he him unto them, to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
[17]AndG2532 he bearingG941[G5723] hisG846 crossG4716 went forthG1831[G5627] intoG1519 a placeG5117 calledG3004[G5746] the place of a skullG2898, whichG3739 is calledG3004[G5743] in the HebrewG1447 GolgothaG1115: [17]And he bare his cross, and came into a place named of dead mens Skulls, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha:
[18]WhereG3699 they crucifiedG4717[G5656] himG846, andG2532 twoG1417 otherG243 withG3326 himG846, on either side oneG2532[G1782][G1782], andG1161 JesusG2424 in the midstG3319. [18]Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
[19]AndG1161[G2532] PilateG4091 wroteG1125[G5656] a titleG5102, andG2532 putG5087[G5656] it onG1909 the crossG4716. AndG1161 the writingG1125[G5772] wasG2258[G5713], JESUSG2424 OF NAZARETHG3480 THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453. [19]And Pilate wrote also a title and put it on the cross, and it was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
[20]ThisG5126 titleG5102 thenG3767 readG314[G5627] manyG4183 of the JewsG2453: forG3754 the placeG5117 whereG3699 JesusG2424 was crucifiedG4717[G5681] wasG2258[G5713] nighG1451 to the cityG4172: andG2532 it wasG2258[G5713] writtenG1125[G5772] in HebrewG1447, and GreekG1676, and LatinG4515. [20]This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified, was near to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin.
[21]ThenG3767 saidG3004[G5707] the chief priestsG749 of the JewsG2453 to PilateG4091, WriteG1125[G5720] notG3361, The KingG935 of the JewsG2453; butG235 thatG3754 heG1565 saidG2036[G5627], I amG1510[G5748] KingG935 of the JewsG2453. [21]Then said the high Priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews, but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
[22]PilateG4091 answeredG611[G5662], WhatG3739 I have writtenG1125[G5758] I have writtenG1125.[G5758] [22]Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
[23]ThenG3767 the soldiersG4757, whenG3753 they had crucifiedG4717[G5656] JesusG2424, tookG2983[G5627] hisG846 garmentsG2440, andG2532 madeG4160[G5656] fourG5064 partsG3313, to everyG1538 soldierG4757 a partG3313; and alsoG2532 his coatG5509: nowG1161 the coatG5509 wasG2258[G5713] without seamG729, wovenG5307 fromG1537 the topG509 throughoutG1223.[G3650] [23]Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part and his coat: and the coat was without seam woven from the top throughout.
[24]They saidG2036[G5627] thereforeG3767 amongG4314 themselvesG240, Let usG4977 notG3361 rendG4977[G5661] itG846, butG235 cast lotsG2975[G5632] forG4012 itG846, whoseG5101 it shall beG2071[G5704]: thatG2443 the scriptureG1124 might be fulfilledG4137[G5686], whichG3588 saithG3004[G5723], They partedG1266[G5668] myG3450 raimentG2440 among themG1438, andG2532 forG1909 myG3450 vestureG2441 they did castG906[G5627] lotsG2819. These thingsG5023[G3303] thereforeG3767 the soldiersG4757 didG4160.[G5656] [24]Therefore they said one to another, Let us not divide it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be. This was that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They departed my garments among them, and on my coat did cast lots. So the soldiers did these things indeed.
[25]NowG1161 there stoodG2476[G5715] byG3844 the crossG4716 of JesusG2424 hisG846 motherG3384, andG2532 hisG846 mother'sG3384 sisterG79, MaryG3137 the wifeG3588 of CleophasG2832, andG2532 MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094. [25]Then stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mothers sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.
[26]When JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 sawG1492[G5631] his motherG3384, andG2532 the discipleG3101 standing byG3936[G5761], whomG3739 he lovedG25[G5707], he saithG3004[G5719] unto hisG846 motherG3384, WomanG1135, beholdG2400[G5628] thyG4675 sonG5207! [26]And when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he said unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son.
[27]ThenG1534 saith heG3004[G5719] to the discipleG3101, BeholdG2400[G5628] thyG4675 motherG3384! AndG2532 fromG575 thatG1565 hourG5610 that discipleG3101 tookG2983[G5627] herG846 untoG1519 his own homeG2398. [27]Then said he to the disciple, Behold thy mother: and from that hour, the disciple took her home unto him.
[28]AfterG3326 thisG5124, JesusG2424 knowingG1492[G5761] thatG3754 all thingsG3956 wereG5055 nowG2235 accomplishedG5055[G5769], thatG2443 the scriptureG1124 might be fulfilledG5048[G5686], saithG3004[G5719], I thirstG1372.[G5719] [28]After, when Jesus knew that all things were performed, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.
[29]NowG3767 there was setG2749[G5711] a vesselG4632 fullG3324 of vinegarG3690: andG1161 they filledG4130[G5660] a spungeG4699 with vinegarG3690, andG2532 put it uponG4060[G5631] hyssopG5301, and putG4374[G5656] it to hisG846 mouthG4750. [29]And there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it about an Hyssop stalk, and put it to his mouth.
[30]WhenG3753 JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 had receivedG2983[G5627] the vinegarG3690, he saidG2036[G5627], It is finishedG5055[G5769]: andG2532 he bowedG2827[G5660] his headG2776, and gave upG3860[G5656] the ghostG4151. [30]Now when Jesus had received of the vinegar, he said, It is finished, and bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
[31]The JewsG2453 thereforeG3767, becauseG1893 it wasG2258[G5713][G5625][G2258][G5713] the preparationG3904, thatG3363 the bodiesG4983 shouldG3306 notG3363 remainG3306[G5661] uponG1909 the crossG4716 onG1722 the sabbath dayG4521, (forG1063 thatG1565 sabbath dayG4521 wasG2258[G5713] an highG3173 dayG2250,) besoughtG2065[G5656] PilateG4091 thatG2443 theirG846 legsG4628 might be brokenG2608[G5652], andG2532 that they might be taken awayG142.[G5686] [31]The Jews then (because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day: for that Sabbath was an high day) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken down.
[32]ThenG3767 cameG2064[G5627] the soldiersG4757, andG2532 brakeG2608[G5656] the legsG4628 of theG3303 firstG4413, andG2532 of the otherG243 whichG3588 was crucified withG4957[G5685] himG846. [32]Then came the soldiers and break the legs of the first, and of the other, which was crucified with Jesus.
[33]ButG1161 whenG5613 they cameG2064[G5631] toG1909 JesusG2424, and sawG1492[G5627] that heG846 was deadG2348[G5761] alreadyG2235, they brakeG2608[G5656] notG3756 hisG846 legsG4628: [33]But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they break not his legs.
[34]ButG235 oneG1520 of the soldiersG4757 with a spearG3057 piercedG3572[G5656] hisG846 sideG4125, andG2532 forthwithG2117 came there outG1831[G5627] bloodG129 andG2532 waterG5204. [34]But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
[35]AndG2532 he that sawG3708[G5761] it bare recordG3140[G5758], andG2532 hisG846 recordG3141 isG2076[G5748] trueG228: and heG2548 knowethG1492[G5758] thatG3754 he saithG3004[G5719] trueG227, thatG2443 yeG5210 might believeG4100.[G5661] [35]And he that saw it, bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true , that ye might believe it.
[36]ForG1063 these thingsG5023 were doneG1096[G5633], thatG2443 the scriptureG1124 should be fulfilledG4137[G5686], A boneG3747 of himG846 shallG4937 notG3756 be brokenG4937.[G5691] [36]For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be broken.
[37]AndG2532 againG3825 anotherG2087 scriptureG1124 saithG3004[G5719], They shall lookG3700[G5695] onG1519 him whomG3739 they piercedG1574.[G5656] [37]And again another Scripture saith, They shall see him whom they have thrust through.
[38]AndG1161 afterG3326 thisG5023 JosephG2501 ofG575 ArimathaeaG707, beingG5607[G5752] a discipleG3101 of JesusG2424, butG1161 secretlyG2928[G5772] forG1223 fearG5401 of the JewsG2453, besoughtG2065[G5656] PilateG4091 thatG2443 he might take awayG142[G5661] the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424: andG2532 PilateG4091 gave him leaveG2010[G5656]. He cameG2064[G5627] thereforeG3767, andG2532 tookG142[G5656] the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. [38]And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea (who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take down the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him license. He came then and took Jesus body.
[39]AndG1161 there cameG2064[G5627] alsoG2532 NicodemusG3530, whichG3588 at the firstG4412 cameG2064[G5631] toG4314 JesusG2424 by nightG3571, and broughtG5342[G5723] a mixtureG3395 of myrrhG4666 andG2532 aloesG250, aboutG5616 an hundredG1540 pound weightG3046. [39]And there came also Nicodemus (which first came to Jesus by night) and brought of myrrh and aloes mingled together about an hundreth pound.
[40]ThenG3767 took theyG2983[G5627] the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424, andG2532 woundG1210[G5656] itG846 in linen clothesG3608 withG3326 the spicesG759, asG2531 the mannerG1485 of the JewsG2453 isG2076[G5748] to buryG1779.[G5721] [40]Then took they the body of Jesus, and wrapped it in linen clothes with the odors, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
[41]NowG1161 inG1722 the placeG5117 whereG3699 he was crucifiedG4717[G5681] there wasG2258[G5713] a gardenG2779; andG2532 inG1722 the gardenG2779 a newG2537 sepulchreG3419, whereinG1722[G3739] wasG5087 neverG3764 manG3762 yetG3764 laidG5087.[G5681] [41]And in that place where Jesus was crucified, was a garden, and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein was never man yet laid.
[42]ThereG1563 laid theyG5087[G5656] JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 becauseG1223 of the Jews'G2453 preparationG3904 day; forG3754 the sepulchreG3419 wasG2258[G5713] nigh at handG1451. [42]There then laid they Jesus, because of the Jews Preparation day, for the sepulcher was near.
