[1]And these [are] they [of] the sons of Israel who inherited in the land of Canaan, whom Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel, caused to inherit; |
[1]These also are the places which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed to them, |
[2]by lot [is] their inheritance, as Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine of the tribes, and the half of the tribe; |
[2]By the lot of their inheritance, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, to give to the nine tribes, and the half tribe. |
[3]for Moses hath given the inheritance of two of the tribes, and of half of the tribe, beyond the Jordan, and to the Levites he hath not given an inheritance in their midst; |
[3]For Moses had given inheritance unto two tribes and an half tribe, beyond Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them. |
[4]for the sons of Joseph hath been two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they have not given a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, and their suburbs for their cattle, and for their possessions; |
[4]For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with the suburbs of the same for their beasts and their substance. |
[5]as Jehovah commanded Moses, so have the sons of Israel done, and they apportion the land. |
[5]As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did when they divided the land. |
[6]And the sons of Judah come nigh unto Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenezzite saith unto him, `Thou hast known the word that Jehovah hath spoken unto Moses the man of God, concerning me and concerning thee in Kadesh-Barnea: |
[6]Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest what the Lord said unto Moses the man of God, concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea. |
[7]a son of forty years [am] I in Moses, servant of Jehovah, sending me from Kadesh-Barnea, to spy the land, and I bring him back word as with my heart; |
[7]Forty year old was I, when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espy the land, and I brought him word again, as I thought in mine heart. |
[8]and my brethren who have gone up with me have caused the heart of the people to melt, and I have been fully after Jehovah my God; |
[8]But my brethren that went up with me, discouraged the heart of the people: yet I followed still the Lord my God. |
[9]and Moses sweareth in that day, saying, If not -- the land on which thy foot hath trodden, to thee it is for inheritance, and to thy sons -- to the age, for thou hast been fully after Jehovah my God. |
[9]Wherefore Moses swear the same day, saying, Certainly the land whereon thy feet have trodden, shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's forever, because thou hast followed constantly the Lord my God. |
[10]`And, now, lo, Jehovah hath kept me alive, as He hath spoken, these forty and five years, since Jehovah spake this word unto Moses, when Israel went in the wilderness; and now, lo, I [am] to-day a son of five and eighty years; |
[10]Therefore behold now, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he promised: this is the forty and fifth year since the Lord spake this thing unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now lo, I am this day four score and five year old: |
[11]yet [am] I to-day strong as in the day of Moses' sending me; as my power then, so [is] my power now, for battle, and to go out, and to come in. |
[11]And yet am as strong at this time, as I was when Moses sent me: as strong as I was then, so strong am I now, either for war, or for government. |
[12]`And now, give to me this hill-country, of which Jehovah spake in that day, for thou didst hear in that day, for Anakim [are] there, and cities, great, fenced; if so be Jehovah [is] with me, then I have dispossessed them, as Jehovah hath spoken.' |
[12]Now therefore give me this mountain whereof the Lord spake in that day (for thou heardest in that day, how the Anakims were there, and the cities great and walled) if so be the Lord will be with me, that I may drive them out, as the Lord said. |
[13]And Joshua blesseth him, and giveth Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh for an inheritance, |
[13]Then Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh, Hebron for an inheritance. |
[14]therefore hath Hebron been to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenezzite for an inheritance unto this day, because that he was fully after Jehovah, God of Israel; |
[14]Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, unto this day: because he followed constantly the Lord God of Israel. |
[15]and the name of Hebron formerly [is] Kirjath-Arba (he [is] the great man among the Anakim); and the land hath rest from war. |
[15]And the name of Hebron was before time, Kirjath-arba: which Arba was a great man among the Anakims: thus the land ceased from war. |
