[1]The Lord also spake unto Joshua, saying, |
| [2]SpeakH1696[H8761] to the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559[H8800], Appoint outH5414[H8798] for you citiesH5892 of refugeH4733, whereof I spakeH1696[H8765] unto you by the handH3027 of MosesH4872: |
[2]Speak to the children of Israel, and say, Appoint you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses, |
| [3]That the slayerH7523[H8802] that killethH5221[H8688] any personH5315 unawaresH7684 and unwittinglyH1847 may fleeH5127[H8800] thither: and they shall be your refugeH4733 from the avengerH1350[H8802] of bloodH1818. |
[3]That the slayer that killeth any person by ignorance , and unwittingly, may flee thither, and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. |
| [4]And when he that doth fleeH5127[H8804] unto oneH259 of those citiesH5892 shall standH5975[H8804] at the enteringH6607 of the gateH8179 of the cityH5892, and shall declareH1696[H8765] his causeH1697 in the earsH241 of the eldersH2205 of that cityH5892, they shall takeH622[H8804] him into the cityH5892 unto them, and giveH5414[H8804] him a placeH4725, that he may dwellH3427 among themH8804. |
[4]And he that doth flee unto one of those cities, shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall show his cause to the elders of the city: and they shall receive him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell with them. |
| [5]And if the avengerH1350[H8802] of bloodH1818 pursueH7291[H8799] afterH310 him, then they shall not deliverH5462[H8686] the slayerH7523[H8802] up into his handH3027; because he smoteH5221[H8689] his neighbourH7453 unwittinglyH1097[H1847], and hatedH8130[H8802] him not beforetimeH8543.[H8032] |
[5]And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand because he smote his neighbor ignorantly, neither hated he him before time: |
| [6]And he shall dwellH3427[H8804] in that cityH5892, until he standH5975[H8800] beforeH6440 the congregationH5712 for judgmentH4941, and until the deathH4194 of the highH1419 priestH3548 thatH834 shall be in those daysH3117: then shall the slayerH7523[H8802] returnH7725[H8799], and comeH935[H8804] unto his own cityH5892, and unto his own houseH1004, unto the cityH5892 from whence he fledH5127.[H8804] |
[6]But he shall dwell in that city until he stand before the congregation in judgment, or until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, even unto the city from whence he fled. |
| [7]And they appointedH6942[H8686] KedeshH6943 in GalileeH1551 in mountH2022 NaphtaliH5321, and ShechemH7927 in mountH2022 EphraimH669, and KirjatharbaH7153, which is HebronH2275, in the mountainH2022 of JudahH3063. |
[7]Then they appointed Kedesh in Galil in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, (which is Hebron) in the mountain of Judah. |
| [8]And on the other sideH5676 JordanH3383 by JerichoH3405 eastwardH4217, they assignedH5414[H8804] BezerH1221 in the wildernessH4057 upon the plainH4334 out of the tribeH4294 of ReubenH7205, and RamothH7216 in GileadH1568 out of the tribeH4294 of GadH1410, and GolanH1474 in BashanH1316 out of the tribeH4294 of ManassehH4519. |
[8]And on the other side Jordan toward Jericho eastward, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, out of the tribe of Manasseh. |
| [9]These were the citiesH5892 appointedH4152 for all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, and for the strangerH1616 that sojournethH1481[H8802] amongH8432 them, that whosoever killethH5221[H8688] any personH5315 at unawaresH7684 might fleeH5127[H8800] thither, and not dieH4191[H8799] by the handH3027 of the avengerH1350[H8802] of bloodH1818, until he stoodH5975[H8800] beforeH6440 the congregationH5712. |
[9]These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourned among them, that whosoever killed any person ignorantly, might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation. |
