[1]And JoshuaH3091 gatheredH622[H8799] all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 to ShechemH7927, and calledH7121[H8799] for the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478, and for their headsH7218, and for their judgesH8199[H8802], and for their officersH7860[H8802]; and they presentedH3320[H8691] themselves beforeH6440 GodH430. [1]And Joshua gathered all the tribe of Israel to Selo, and convoked their elders, and their officers, and their judges, and set them before God.
[2]And JoshuaH3091 saidH559[H8799] unto all the peopleH5971, Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, Your fathersH1 dweltH3427[H8804] on the other sideH5676 of the floodH5104 in old timeH5769, even TerahH8646, the fatherH1 of AbrahamH85, and the fatherH1 of NachorH5152: and they servedH5647[H8799] otherH312 godsH430. [2]And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, even Thara, the father of Abraam and the father of Nachor; and they served other gods.
[3]And I tookH3947[H8799] your fatherH1 AbrahamH85 from the other sideH5676 of the floodH5104, and ledH3212[H8686] him throughout all the landH776 of CanaanH3667, and multipliedH7235[H8686] his seedH2233, and gaveH5414[H8799] him IsaacH3327. [3]And I took your father Abraam from the other side of the river, and I guided him through all the land, and I multiplied his seed;
[4]And I gaveH5414[H8799] unto IsaacH3327 JacobH3290 and EsauH6215: and I gaveH5414[H8799] unto EsauH6215 mountH2022 SeirH8165, to possessH3423[H8800] it; but JacobH3290 and his childrenH1121 went downH3381[H8804] into EgyptH4714. [4]and I gave to him Isaac, and to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau mount Seir for him to inherit: and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt, and became there a great and populous and mighty nation: and the Egyptians afflicted them.
[5]I sentH7971[H8799] MosesH4872 also and AaronH175, and I plaguedH5062[H8799] EgyptH4714, according to that whichH834 I didH6213[H8804] amongH7130 them: and afterwardH310 I brought you outH3318.[H8689] [5]And I smote Egypt with the wonders that I wrought among them.
[6]And I broughtH3318[H8686] your fathersH1 out of EgyptH4714: and ye cameH935[H8799] unto the seaH3220; and the EgyptiansH4714 pursuedH7291[H8799] afterH310 your fathersH1 with chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 unto the RedH5488 seaH3220. [6]And afterwards God brought out our fathers from Egypt, and ye entered into the Red Sea; and the Egyptians pursued after our fathers with chariots and horses into the Red Sea.
[7]And when they criedH6817[H8799] unto the LORDH3068, he putH7760[H8799] darknessH3990 between you and the EgyptiansH4713, and broughtH935[H8686] the seaH3220 upon them, and coveredH3680[H8762] them; and your eyesH5869 have seenH7200[H8799] what I have doneH6213[H8804] in EgyptH4714: and ye dweltH3427[H8799] in the wildernessH4057 a longH7227 seasonH3117. [7]And we cried aloud to the Lord; and he put a cloud and darkness between us and the Egyptians, and he brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in the land of Egypt; and ye were in the wilderness many days.
[8]And I broughtH935[H8686] you into the landH776 of the AmoritesH567, which dweltH3427[H8802] on the other sideH5676 JordanH3383; and they foughtH3898[H8735] with you: and I gaveH5414[H8799] them into your handH3027, that ye might possessH3423[H8799] their landH776; and I destroyedH8045[H8686] them from before youH6440. [8]And he brought us into the land of the Amorites that dwelt beyond Jordan, and the Lord delivered them into our hands; and ye inherited their land, and utterly destroyed them from before you.
[9]Then BalakH1111 the sonH1121 of ZipporH6834, kingH4428 of MoabH4124, aroseH6965[H8799] and warredH3898[H8735] against IsraelH3478, and sentH7971[H8799] and calledH7121[H8799] BalaamH1109 the sonH1121 of BeorH1160 to curseH7043 youH8763: [9]And Balac, king of Moab, son of Sepphor, rose up, and made war against Israel, and sent and called Balaam to curse us.
[10]But I wouldH14[H8804] not hearkenH8085[H8800] unto BalaamH1109; therefore he blessedH1288[H8762] you stillH1288[H8800]: so I deliveredH5337[H8686] you out of his handH3027. [10]But the Lord thy God would not destroy thee; and he greatly blessed us, and rescued us out of their hands, and delivered them to us.
[11]And ye went overH5674[H8799] JordanH3383, and cameH935[H8799] unto JerichoH3405: and the menH1167 of JerichoH3405 foughtH3898[H8735] against you, the AmoritesH567, and the PerizzitesH6522, and the CanaanitesH3669, and the HittitesH2850, and the GirgashitesH1622, the HivitesH2340, and the JebusitesH2983; and I deliveredH5414[H8799] them into your handH3027. [11]And ye crossed over Jordan, and came to Jericho; and the inhabitants of Jericho fought against us, the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Chettite, and the Gergesite, and the Lord delivered them into our hands.
[12]And I sentH7971[H8799] the hornetH6880 beforeH6440 you, which drave them outH1644[H8762] from beforeH6440 you, even the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567; but not with thy swordH2719, nor with thy bowH7198. [12]And he sent forth the hornet before you; and he drove them out from before you, even twelve kings of the Amorites, not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
[13]And I have givenH5414[H8799] you a landH776 for which ye did not labourH3021[H8804], and citiesH5892 which ye builtH1129[H8804] not, and ye dwellH3427[H8799] in them; of the vineyardsH3754 and oliveyardsH2132 which ye plantedH5193[H8804] not do ye eatH398.[H8802] [13]And he gave you a land on which ye did not labour, and cities which ye did not build, and ye were settled in them; and ye eat of vineyards and oliveyards which ye did not plant.
[14]Now therefore fearH3372[H8798] the LORDH3068, and serveH5647[H8798] him in sincerityH8549 and in truthH571: and put awayH5493[H8685] the godsH430 which your fathersH1 servedH5647[H8804] on the other sideH5676 of the floodH5104, and in EgyptH4714; and serveH5647[H8798] ye the LORDH3068. [14]And now fear the Lord, and serve him in righteousness and justice; and remove the strange gods, which our fathers served beyond the river, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord.
[15]And if it seem evilH7489[H8804] unto youH4310 to serveH5647[H8800] the LORDH3068, chooseH977[H8798] you this dayH3117 whomH5869 ye will serveH5647[H8799]; whether the godsH430 which your fathersH1 servedH5647[H8804] that were on the other sideH5676 of the floodH5104, or the godsH430 of the AmoritesH567, in whose landH776 ye dwellH3427[H8802]: but as for me and my houseH1004, we will serveH5647[H8799] the LORDH3068. [15]But if it seem not good to you to serve the Lord, choose to yourselves this day whom ye will serve, whether the gods of your fathers that were on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites, among whom ye dwell upon their land: but I and my house will serve the Lord, for he is holy.
[16]And the peopleH5971 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], God forbidH2486 that we should forsakeH5800[H8800] the LORDH3068, to serveH5647[H8800] otherH312 godsH430; [16]And the people answered and said, Far be it from us to forsake the Lord, so as to serve other gods.
[17]For the LORDH3068 our GodH430, he it is that brought us upH5927[H8688] and our fathersH1 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, from the houseH1004 of bondageH5650, and which didH6213[H8804] those greatH1419 signsH226 in our sightH5869, and preservedH8104[H8799] us in all the wayH1870 wherein we wentH1980[H8804], and among all the peopleH5971 throughH7130 whom we passedH5674:[H8804] [17]The Lord our God, he is God; he brought up us and our fathers from Egypt, and kept us in all the way wherein we walked, and among all the nations through whom we passed.
[18]And the LORDH3068 drave outH1644[H8762] from beforeH6440 us all the peopleH5971, even the AmoritesH567 which dweltH3427[H8802] in the landH776: therefore will we also serveH5647[H8799] the LORDH3068; for he is our GodH430. [18]And the Lord cast out the Amorite, and all the nations that inhabited the land from before us: yea, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.
[19]And JoshuaH3091 saidH559[H8799] unto the peopleH5971, Ye cannotH3201[H8799] serveH5647[H8800] the LORDH3068: for he is an holyH6918 GodH430; he is a jealousH7072 GodH410; he will not forgiveH5375[H8799] your transgressionsH6588 nor your sinsH2403. [19]And Joshua said to the people, Indeed ye will not be able to serve the Lord, for God is holy; and he being jealous will not forgive your sins and your transgressions.
[20]If ye forsakeH5800[H8799] the LORDH3068, and serveH5647[H8804] strangeH5236 godsH430, then he will turnH7725[H8804] and do you hurtH7489[H8689], and consumeH3615[H8765] you, afterH310 that he hath done you goodH3190.[H8689] [20]Whensoever ye shall forsake the Lord and serve other gods, then he shall come upon you and afflict you, and consume you, because he has done you good.
[21]And the peopleH5971 saidH559[H8799] unto JoshuaH3091, Nay; but we will serveH5647[H8799] the LORDH3068. [21]And the people said to Joshua, Nay, but we will serve the Lord.
[22]And JoshuaH3091 saidH559[H8799] unto the peopleH5971, Ye are witnessesH5707 against yourselves that ye have chosenH977[H8804] you the LORDH3068, to serveH5647[H8800] him. And they saidH559[H8799], We are witnessesH5707. [22]And Joshua said to the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves, that ye have chosen the Lord to serve him.
[23]Now therefore put awayH5493[H8685], said he, the strangeH5236 godsH430 which are amongH7130 you, and inclineH5186[H8685] your heartH3824 unto the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478. [23]And now take away the strange gods that are among you, and set your heart right toward the Lord God of Israel.
[24]And the peopleH5971 saidH559[H8799] unto JoshuaH3091, The LORDH3068 our GodH430 will we serveH5647[H8799], and his voiceH6963 will we obeyH8085.[H8799] [24]And the people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord, and we will hearken to his voice.
[25]So JoshuaH3091 madeH3772[H8799] a covenantH1285 with the peopleH5971 that dayH3117, and setH7760[H8799] them a statuteH2706 and an ordinanceH4941 in ShechemH7927. [25]So Joshua made a covenant with the people on that day, and gave them a law and an ordinance in Selo before the tabernacle of the God of Israel.
[26]And JoshuaH3091 wroteH3789[H8799] these wordsH1697 in the bookH5612 of the lawH8451 of GodH430, and tookH3947[H8799] a greatH1419 stoneH68, and set it upH6965[H8686] there under an oakH427, that was by the sanctuaryH4720 of the LORDH3068. [26]And he wrote these words in the book of the laws of God: and Joshua took a great stone, and set it up under the oak before the Lord.
[27]And JoshuaH3091 saidH559[H8799] unto all the peopleH5971, Behold, this stoneH68 shall be a witnessH5713 unto us; for it hath heardH8085[H8804] all the wordsH561 of the LORDH3068 which he spakeH1696[H8765] unto us: it shall be therefore a witnessH5713 unto you, lest ye denyH3584[H8762] your GodH430. [27]And Joshua said to the people, Behold, this stone shall be among you for a witness, for it has heard all the words that have been spoken to it by the Lord; for he has spoken to you this day; and this stone shall be among you for a witness in the last days, whenever ye shall deal falsely with the Lord my God.
[28]So JoshuaH3091 let the peopleH5971 departH7971[H8762], every manH376 unto his inheritanceH5159. [28]And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his place.
[29]And it came to pass afterH310 these thingsH1697, that JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068, diedH4191[H8799], being an hundredH3967 and tenH6235 yearsH8141 oldH1121. [29]And it came to pass after these things that Joshua the son of Naue the servant of the Lord died, at the age of a hundred and ten years.
[30]And they buriedH6912[H8799] him in the borderH1366 of his inheritanceH5159 in TimnathserahH8556, which is in mountH2022 EphraimH669, on the north sideH6828 of the hillH2022 of GaashH1608. [30]And they buried him by the borders of his inheritance in Thamnasarach in the mount of Ephraim, northward of the mount of Galaad: there they put with him into the tomb in which they buried him, the knives of stone with which he circumcised the children of Israel in Galgala, when he brought them out of Egypt, as the Lord appointed them; and there they are to this day.
[31]And IsraelH3478 servedH5647[H8799] the LORDH3068 all the daysH3117 of JoshuaH3091, and all the daysH3117 of the eldersH2205 that overlivedH748[H8689][H3117][H310] JoshuaH3091, and which had knownH3045[H8804] all the worksH4639 of the LORDH3068, that he had doneH6213[H8804] for IsraelH3478. [31]And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived as long as Joshua, and all that knew all the works of the Lord which he wrought for Israel.
[32]And the bonesH6106 of JosephH3130, which the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 brought upH5927[H8689] out of EgyptH4714, buriedH6912[H8804] they in ShechemH7927, in a parcelH2513 of groundH7704 which JacobH3290 boughtH7069[H8804] of the sonsH1121 of HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 for an hundredH3967 pieces of silverH7192: and it became the inheritanceH5159 of the childrenH1121 of JosephH3130. [32]And the children of Israel brought up the bones of Joseph out of Egypt, and buried them in Sicima, in the portion of the land which Jacob bought of the Amorites who dwelt in Sicima for a hundred ewe-lambs; and he gave it to Joseph for a portion.
[33]And EleazarH499 the sonH1121 of AaronH175 diedH4191[H8804]; and they buriedH6912[H8799] him in a hillH1389 that pertained to PhinehasH6372 his sonH1121, which was givenH5414[H8738] him in mountH2022 EphraimH669. [33]And it came to pass afterwards that Eleazar the high-priest the son of Aaron died, and was buried in Gabaar of Phinees his son, which he gave him in mount Ephraim.
