[1]And the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8799] unto JoshuaH3091, FearH3372[H8799] not, neither be thou dismayedH2865[H8735]: takeH3947[H8798] all the peopleH5971 of warH4421 with thee, and ariseH6965[H8798], go upH5927[H8798] to AiH5857: seeH7200[H8798], I have givenH5414[H8804] into thy handH3027 the kingH4428 of AiH5857, and his peopleH5971, and his cityH5892, and his landH776: [1]After, the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou faint hearted: take all the men of war with thee and arise, go up to Ai: behold I have given into thine hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.
[2]And thou shalt doH6213[H8804] to AiH5857 and her kingH4428 as thou didstH6213[H8804] unto JerichoH3405 and her kingH4428: only the spoilH7998 thereof, and the cattleH929 thereof, shall ye take for a preyH962[H8799] unto yourselves: layH7760[H8798] thee an ambushH693[H8802] for the cityH5892 behind itH310. [2]And thou shalt do to Ai and to the king thereof, as thou didst unto Jericho and to the king thereof: nevertheless the spoil thereof and the cattle thereof shall ye take unto you for a prey: thou shalt lie in wait against the city on the backside thereof.
[3]So JoshuaH3091 aroseH6965[H8799], and all the peopleH5971 of warH4421, to go upH5927[H8800] against AiH5857: and JoshuaH3091 chose outH977[H8799] thirtyH7970 thousandH505 mightyH1368 menH376 of valourH2428, and sent them awayH7971[H8799] by nightH3915. [3]Then Joshua arose, and all the men of war to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand strong men, and valiant, and sent them away by night.
[4]And he commandedH6680[H8762] them, sayingH559[H8800], BeholdH7200[H8798], ye shall lie in waitH693[H8802] against the cityH5892, even behindH310 the cityH5892: goH7368 not veryH3966 farH7368[H8686] from the cityH5892, but be ye all readyH3559:[H8737] [4]And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city on the backside of the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all in a readiness.
[5]And I, and all the peopleH5971 that are with me, will approachH7126[H8799] unto the cityH5892: and it shall come to pass, when they come outH3318[H8799] againstH7125[H8800] us, as at the firstH7223, that we will fleeH5127[H8804] before themH6440, [5]And I and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and when they shall come out against us, as they did at the first time, then will we flee before them.
[6]H3318( For they will come outH8804 afterH310 us) till we have drawnH5423[H8687] them from the cityH5892; for they will sayH559[H8799], They fleeH5127[H8801] beforeH6440 us, as at the firstH7223: therefore we will fleeH5127[H8804] before themH6440. [6]For they will come out after us, till we have brought them out of the city: for they will say, They flee before us as at the first time: so we will flee before them.
[7]Then ye shall rise upH6965[H8799] from the ambushH693[H8802], and seizeH3423[H8689] upon the cityH5892: for the LORDH3068 your GodH430 will deliverH5414[H8804] it into your handH3027. [7]Then you shall rise up from lying in wait and destroy the city: for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.
[8]And it shall be, when ye have takenH8610[H8800] the cityH5892, that ye shall setH3341[H8686] the cityH5892 on fireH784: according to the commandmentH1697 of the LORDH3068 shall ye doH6213[H8799]. SeeH7200[H8798], I have commandedH6680 youH8765. [8]And when ye have taken the city, ye shall set it on fire: according to the commandment of the Lord shall ye do: behold, I have charged you.
[9]JoshuaH3091 therefore sent them forthH7971[H8799]: and they wentH3212[H8799] to lie in ambushH3993, and abodeH3427[H8799] between BethelH1008 and AiH5857, on the west sideH3220 of AiH5857: but JoshuaH3091 lodgedH3885[H8799] that nightH3915 amongH8432 the peopleH5971. [9]Joshua then sent them forth, and they went to lie in wait, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
[10]And JoshuaH3091 rose up earlyH7925[H8686] in the morningH1242, and numberedH6485[H8799] the peopleH5971, and went upH5927[H8799], he and the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478, beforeH6440 the peopleH5971 to AiH5857. [10]And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people: and he and the elders of Israel went up before the people against Ai.
[11]And all the peopleH5971, even the people of warH4421 that were with him, went upH5927[H8804], and drew nighH5066[H8799], and cameH935[H8799] before the cityH5892, and pitchedH2583[H8799] on the north sideH6828 of AiH5857: now there was a valleyH1516 between them and AiH5857. [11]Also all the men of war that were with him went up and drew near, and came against the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: and there was a valley between them and Ai.
[12]And he tookH3947[H8799] about fiveH2568 thousandH505 menH376, and setH7760[H8799] them to lie in ambushH693[H8802] between BethelH1008 and AiH5857, on the west sideH3220 of the cityH5857[H8675].[H5892] [12]And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in wait between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city.
[13]And when they had setH7760[H8799] the peopleH5971, even all the hostH4264 that was on the northH6828 of the cityH5892, and their liers in waitH6119 on the westH3220 of the cityH5892, JoshuaH3091 wentH3212[H8799] that nightH3915 into the midstH8432 of the valleyH6010. [13]And the people set all the host that was on the north side against the city, and the liars in wait on the west, against the city: and Joshua went the same night into the midst of the valley.
[14]And it came to pass, when the kingH4428 of AiH5857 sawH7200[H8800] it, that they hastedH4116[H8762] and rose up earlyH7925[H8686], and the menH582 of the cityH5892 went outH3318[H8799] againstH7125[H8800] IsraelH3478 to battleH4421, he and all his peopleH5971, at a time appointedH4150, beforeH6440 the plainH6160; but he wistH3045[H8804] not that there were liers in ambushH693[H8802] against him behindH310 the cityH5892. [14]And when the king of Ai saw it, then the men of the city hasted and rose up early, and went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people at the time appointed, before the plain: for he knew not that any lay in wait against him on the backside of the city.
[15]And JoshuaH3091 and all IsraelH3478 made as if they were beatenH5060[H8735] beforeH6440 them, and fledH5127[H8799] by the wayH1870 of the wildernessH4057. [15]Then Joshua and all Israel as beaten before them, fled by the way of the wilderness.
[16]And all the peopleH5971 that were in AiH5857[H8675][H5892] were calledH2199[H8735] together to pursueH7291[H8800] afterH310 them: and they pursuedH7291[H8799] afterH310 JoshuaH3091, and were drawn awayH5423[H8735] from the cityH5892. [16]And all the people of the city were called together, to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away out of the city,
[17]And there was not a manH376 leftH7604[H8738] in AiH5857 or BethelH1008, that went not outH3318[H8804] afterH310 IsraelH3478: and they leftH5800[H8799] the cityH5892 openH6605[H8803], and pursuedH7291[H8799] after IsraelH3478. [17]So that there was not a man left in Ai, nor in Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
[18]And the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8799] unto JoshuaH3091, Stretch outH5186[H8798] the spearH3591 that is in thy handH3027 toward AiH5857; for I will giveH5414[H8799] it into thine handH3027. And JoshuaH3091 stretched outH5186[H8799] the spearH3591 that he had in his handH3027 toward the cityH5892. [18]Then the Lord said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thine hand, toward Ai: for I will give it into thine hand: and Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand, toward the city.
[19]And the ambushH693[H8802] aroseH6965[H8804] quicklyH4120 out of their placeH4725, and they ranH7323[H8799] as soon as he had stretched outH5186[H8800] his handH3027: and they enteredH935[H8799] into the cityH5892, and tookH3920[H8799] it, and hastedH4116[H8762] and setH3341[H8686] the cityH5892 on fireH784. [19]And they that lay in wait, arose quickly out of their place, and ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted, and set the city on fire.
[20]And when the menH582 of AiH5857 lookedH6437[H8799] behindH310 them, they sawH7200[H8799], and, behold, the smokeH6227 of the cityH5892 ascended upH5927[H8804] to heavenH8064, and they had no powerH3027 to fleeH5127[H8800] this way or that wayH2008: and the peopleH5971 that fledH5127[H8801] to the wildernessH4057 turned backH2015[H8738] upon the pursuersH7291.[H8802] [20]And the men of Ai looked behind them, and saw it: for lo, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: for the people that fled to the wilderness, turned back upon the pursuers.
[21]And when JoshuaH3091 and all IsraelH3478 sawH7200[H8804] that the ambushH693[H8802] had takenH3920[H8804] the cityH5892, and that the smokeH6227 of the cityH5892 ascendedH5927[H8804], then they turned againH7725[H8799], and slewH5221[H8686] the menH582 of AiH5857. [21]When Joshua and all Israel saw that they that lay in wait, had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city mounted up, then they turned again and slew the men of Ai.
[22]And the otherH428 issued outH3318[H8804] of the cityH5892 againstH7125[H8800] them; so they were in the midstH8432 of IsraelH3478, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smoteH5221[H8686] them, so thatH5704 they letH7604[H8689] none of them remainH8300 or escapeH6412. [22]Also the other issued out of the city against them: so were they in the midst of Israel, these being on the one side, and the rest on the other side: and they slew them, so that they let none of them remain nor escape.
[23]And the kingH4428 of AiH5857 they tookH8610[H8804] aliveH2416, and broughtH7126[H8686] him to JoshuaH3091. [23]And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
[24]And it came to pass, when IsraelH3478 had made an endH3615[H8763] of slayingH2026[H8800] all the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of AiH5857 in the fieldH7704, in the wildernessH4057 wherein they chasedH7291[H8804] them, and when they were all fallenH5307[H8799] on the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, until they were consumedH8552[H8800], that all the IsraelitesH3478 returnedH7725[H8799] unto AiH5857, and smoteH5221[H8686] it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719. [24]And when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, that is, in the wilderness, where they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
[25]And so it was, that all that fellH5307[H8802] that dayH3117, both of menH376 and womenH802, were twelveH8147[H6240] thousandH505, even all the menH582 of AiH5857. [25]And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
[26]For JoshuaH3091 drewH7725 not his handH3027 backH7725[H8689], wherewith he stretched outH5186[H8804] the spearH3591, until he had utterly destroyedH2763[H8689] all the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of AiH5857. [26]For Joshua drew not his hand back again which he had stretched out with the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
[27]Only the cattleH929 and the spoilH7998 of that cityH5892 IsraelH3478 took for a preyH962[H8804] unto themselves, according unto the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 which he commandedH6680[H8765] JoshuaH3091. [27]Only the cattle and the spoil of this city, Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the Lord, which he commanded Joshua.
[28]And JoshuaH3091 burntH8313[H8799] AiH5857, and madeH7760[H8799] it an heapH8510 for everH5769, even a desolationH8077 unto this dayH3117. [28]And Joshua burned Ai, and made it an heap forever, and a wilderness unto this day.
[29]And the kingH4428 of AiH5857 he hangedH8518[H8804] on a treeH6086 until eventideH6256[H6153]: and as soon as the sunH8121 was downH935[H8800], JoshuaH3091 commandedH6680[H8765] that they should takeH3381 his carcaseH5038 downH3381[H8686] from the treeH6086, and castH7993[H8686] it at the enteringH6607 of the gateH8179 of the cityH5892, and raiseH6965[H8686] thereon a greatH1419 heapH1530 of stonesH68, that remaineth unto this dayH3117. [29]And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree, unto the evening. And as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcass down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and lay thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
[30]Then JoshuaH3091 builtH1129[H8799] an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 in mountH2022 EbalH5858, [30]Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel, in mount Ebal,
[31]As MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068 commandedH6680[H8765] the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, as it is writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of the lawH8451 of MosesH4872, an altarH4196 of wholeH8003 stonesH68, over which no man hath lift upH5130[H8689] any ironH1270: and they offeredH5927[H8686] thereon burnt offeringsH5930 unto the LORDH3068, and sacrificedH2076[H8799] peace offeringsH8002. [31]As Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stone, over which no man had lift an iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
[32]And he wroteH3789[H8799] there upon the stonesH68 a copyH4932 of the lawH8451 of MosesH4872, which he wroteH3789[H8804] in the presenceH6440 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. [32]Also he wrote there upon the stones, a rehearsal of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
[33]And all IsraelH3478, and their eldersH2205, and officersH7860[H8802], and their judgesH8199[H8802], stoodH5975[H8802] on this side the arkH727 and on that side before the priestsH3548 the LevitesH3881, which bareH5375[H8802] the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068, as well the strangerH1616, as he that was bornH249 among them; halfH2677 of them overH413 againstH4136 mountH2022 GerizimH1630, and halfH2677 of them over againstH4136 mountH2022 EbalH5858; as MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680[H8765] beforeH7223, that they should blessH1288[H8763] the peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478. [33]And all Israel (and their elders, and officers and their judges stood on this side of the ark, and on that side, before the priests of the Levites, which bear the ark of the covenant of the Lord) as well the stranger, as he that is born in the country: half of them were over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
[34]And afterwardH310 he readH7121[H8804] all the wordsH1697 of the lawH8451, the blessingsH1293 and cursingsH7045, according to all that is writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of the lawH8451. [34]Then afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
[35]There was not a wordH1697 of all that MosesH4872 commandedH6680[H8765], which JoshuaH3091 readH7121[H8804] not before all the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478, with the womenH802, and the little onesH2945, and the strangersH1616 that were conversantH1980[H8802] among themH7130. [35]There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, as well before the women and the children, as the stranger that was conversant among them.
