| [1]AND it came to pass when he entered the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to eat bread on a sabbath day, they watched him. |
[1]AND it was that while he went into the house of one of the chief Pharishee to eat bread, on the day of shabath, they watched him. |
| [2]And there was a man before him, who had dropsy. |
[2]And, behold, a certain man who had gathered watersⓘ was before him. |
| [3]And Jesus answered and said to the scribes and Pharisees, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? |
[3]And Jeshu answered and said to the Sophree and the Pharishee, Is it lawful on the shabath to heal? |
| [4]But they kept silent. So he took him, and healed him, and let him go. |
[4]But they were silent. And he took him, and healed him, and dismissed him. |
| [5]And he said to them, Which one of you, if his son or his ox should fall into a pit on the sabbath day, would not immediately pull and bring him out? |
[5]And he said to them, Who from you, whose son or his ox hath fallen into a pit on the day of shabath, doth not at once bring him forth? |
| [6]And they could not answer him concerning this. |
[6]And they could not give him the answer concerning this. |
| [7]And he spoke a parable to those who were invited there, because he saw them choosing places among the front seats. |
[7]And he spoke a parable to them who had been invited there, forasmuch as he had observed them, that they chose the chief places of reclining: |
| [8]When you are invited of a man to a banquet house, do not go and sit in the front seat; it might be that a more honorable man than you is invited there; |
[8]When thou art invited by one into the house of festivity, go not to recline on the principal seat, lest there be invited thither one more honourable than thou; |
| [9]And then he who has invited you and him will come, and say to you, Give the place to him; and you will be embarrassed when you get up and take a lower seat. |
[9]And he come who thyself and him had called, and say to thee, Give place to this; and thou be ashamed as thou arisest to take another place. |
| [10]But when you are invited, go and sit at the lower end, so that when he who has invited you comes, he will say to you, My friend, go up and sit higher; and you will have glory before all who sit with you. |
[10]But when thou art invited, go, recline thee in the last [seat], that when he who called thee cometh, he may say to thee, My friend, ascend and recline above, and thou shalt have honour before all of them who recline with thee. |
| [11]For whoever exalts himself will be humbled; and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. |
[11]For every one who exalteth himself shall be humbled; and every one who humbleth himself shall be exalted. |
| [12]He also said to him who had invited him, When you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor your rich neighbors; they might probally invite you, and you will be repaid for this. |
[12]And he said to him who had called him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, thou shouldest not call thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours, lest they also call thee, and thou have this recompence. |
| [13]But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind; |
[13]But when thou makest a feast,ⓘ call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, |
| [14]And you will be blessed; for they have nothing to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. |
[14]And thou shalt be blessed, because they cannot recompense thee; for thy recompence shall be in the resurrection of the just. |
| [15]When one of the guests heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of God. |
[15]But when one of those who reclined heard these [words], he said to him, Blessed he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of Aloha! |
| [16]Jesus said to him, A man gave a great supper, and invited many. |
[16]Jeshu saith to him, A certain man made a great supper, and called many. |
| [17]And he sent his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, Behold, everything is made ready for you, come. |
[17]And he sent his servant, at the time of the supper, to say to them who were called, Behold, every thing is prepared for you, come. |
| [18]One and all, they began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and I am forced to go and see it; I beg you to excuse me for being called away. |
[18]And every one of them began to excuse himself. The first said to him, I have bought an estate, and am constrained to go forth to see it: I beseech thee, permit me to be excused. |
| [19]Another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am just going to examine them; I beg you, excuse me for being called away. |
[19]Another said, Five yoke of oxen have I bought, and I go to prove them: I beseech thee, permit me to be excused. |
| [20]Another said, I have just taken a wife, and therefore I cannot come. |
[20]Another said, A wife have I taken, and therefore I cannot come. |
| [21]And the servant came and told his master these things. Then the master of the house was angry, and said to his servant, Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, the afflicted, the maimed and the blind. |
[21]And the servant came and told his lord these things. Then the lord of the house was angry, and said to his servant, Go into the streets and outskirts of the city, and bring hither the poor, and the afflicted, and the lame, and the sightless. |
| [22]And the servant said, My Lord, it has been done as you commanded, and yet there is more room. |
[22]And the servant said, My lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is place. |
| [23]Then the master said to his servant, Go out to the highways and hedges, and urge them to come in so that my house may be filled. |
[23]And the lord said to his servant, Go forth into the ways, and among the hedges, and constrain them to come in, that my house may be filled: |
| [24]For I say to you, that not one of those men who were invited shall taste of my supper. |
[24]For I tell you, that not one of those men who were called shall taste of my supper. |
| [25]And while many people were going with him, he turned and said to them, |
[25]AND while great multitudes were going with him, he turned and said to them, |
| [26]He who comes to me and does not put aside his father, and his mother, and his brothers, and his sisters, and his wife, and his children, and even his own life, he cannot be a disciple to me. |
[26]Whoever cometh with me, and doth not hate his father and his mother, and his brethren and his sisters, and his wife and his children, and himself also, a disciple he cannot be of mine. |
| [27]And he who does not take up his cross and follow me, cannot be a disciple to me. |
[27]And whoever doth not take up his cross and come after me, a disciple he cannot be of mine. |
| [28]For which of you, who wishes to build a tower, does not at first sit down and consider its cost, to see if he has enough to finish it? |
[28]For who of you that willeth to build a tower, and doth not first sit down and reckon the expense of it, whether he have [wherewith] to finish it? |
| [29]Lest after he has laid the foundation, he is not able to finish it, and all who see it will mock him, |
[29]Lest, when he shall have laid the foundation, and shall not be able to finish, all who see shall deride him, |
| [30]Saying, This man began to build, but he was not able to finish. |
[30]Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. |
| [31]Or which king, who goes to war to fight against a king equal to him, would not at first reason, whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one who is coming against him with twenty thousand? |
[31]Or, what king, going to war with a king his neighbour, doth not first consider, whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him who cometh against him with twenty thousand? |
| [32]And if not, while he is far away from him, sends envoys and seeks peace. |
[32]And if not, while he is distant from him, he may send legates, and pray for peace. |
| [33]So every man of you, who would not leave all his possessions, cannot be a disciple to me. |
[33]So every one of you who doth not leave all his possession, cannot be unto me a disciple. |
| [34]Salt is good; but if the salt lose its savor, with what can it be salted? |
[34]Salt is good; but if the salt also shall become insipid, with what shall it be seasoned? |
| [35]It is good neither for the ground nor for fertilizing; but it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear let him hear. |
[35]Not for the earth, nor for the dunghill, it goeth. They cast it out. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
