| [1]IN the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, during the governorship of Pontius Pilate in Judaea, when Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanius tetrarch of Abilene, |
[1]εν ετει δε πεντεκαιδεκατω της ηγεμονιας τιβεριου καισαρος ηγεμονευοντος ποντιου πιλατου της ιουδαιας και τετραρχουντος της γαλιλαιας ηρωδου φιλιππου δε του αδελφου αυτου τετραρχουντος της ιτουραιας και τραχωνιτιδος χωρας και λυσανιου της αβιληνης τετραρχουντος |
| [2]During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. |
[2]επ αρχιερεων αννα και καιαφα εγενετο ρημα θεου επι ιωαννην τον του ζαχαριου υιον εν τη ερημω |
| [3]And he came throughout the country around Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; |
[3]και ηλθεν εις πασαν την περιχωρον του ιορδανου κηρυσσων βαπτισμα μετανοιας εις αφεσιν αμαρτιων |
| [4]As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, who said, The voice which calls in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make the paths of our God straight in the plain. |
[4]ως γεγραπται εν βιβλω λογων ησαιου του προφητου λεγοντος φωνη βοωντος εν τη ερημω ετοιμασατε την οδον κυριου ευθειας ποιειτε τας τριβους αυτου |
| [5]Let all the valleys be filled up, and all the mountains and hills be levelled; let the crooked places be made straight, and the rough places like a plain; |
[5]πασα φαραγξ πληρωθησεται και παν ορος και βουνος ταπεινωθησεται και εσται τα σκολια εις ευθειαν και αι τραχειαι εις οδους λειας |
| [6]And let every flesh see the salvation of God. |
[6]και οψεται πασα σαρξ το σωτηριον του θεου |
| [7]And he said to the people, who were coming to him to be baptized, O offspring of scorpions, who has warned you to escape from the anger which is coming? |
[7]ελεγεν ουν τοις εκπορευομενοις οχλοις βαπτισθηναι υπ αυτου γεννηματα εχιδνων τις υπεδειξεν υμιν φυγειν απο της μελλουσης οργης |
| [8]Therefore bring forth fruits which are worthy of repentance; and do not begin to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father; for I say to you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones. |
[8]ποιησατε ουν καρπους αξιους της μετανοιας και μη αρξησθε λεγειν εν εαυτοις πατερα εχομεν τον αβρααμ λεγω γαρ υμιν οτι δυναται ο θεος εκ των λιθων τουτων εγειραι τεκνα τω αβρααμ |
| [9]Behold, the axe is already placed at the root of the trees; therefore every tree which bears not good fruits will be cut down and dropped in the fire. |
[9]ηδη δε και η αξινη προς την ριζαν των δενδρων κειται παν ουν δενδρον μη ποιουν καρπον καλον εκκοπτεται και εις πυρ βαλλεται |
| [10]And the people asked him saying, What then shall we do? |
[10]και επηρωτων αυτον οι οχλοι λεγοντες τι ουν ποιησομεν |
| [11]He answered and said to them, He who has two shirts, let him give to him who has not; and he who has food, let him do likewise. |
[11]αποκριθεις δε λεγει αυτοις ο εχων δυο χιτωνας μεταδοτω τω μη εχοντι και ο εχων βρωματα ομοιως ποιειτω |
| [12]And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? |
[12]ηλθον δε και τελωναι βαπτισθηναι και ειπον προς αυτον διδασκαλε τι ποιησομεν |
| [13]He said to them, Do not exact anything more over what is commanded you to exact. |
[13]ο δε ειπεν προς αυτους μηδεν πλεον παρα το διατεταγμενον υμιν πρασσετε |
| [14]And the soldiers also asked him saying, What shall we do? And he said to them, Do not molest any man, and do not despise any man; your own wages should be enough for you. |
[14]επηρωτων δε αυτον και στρατευομενοι λεγοντες και ημεις τι ποιησομεν και ειπεν προς αυτους μηδενα διασεισητε μηδε συκοφαντησητε και αρκεισθε τοις οψωνιοις υμων |
| [15]While the people were placing their hope on John, and all of them were thinking in their hearts, that perhaps he is the Christ; |
[15]προσδοκωντος δε του λαου και διαλογιζομενων παντων εν ταις καρδιαις αυτων περι του ιωαννου μηποτε αυτος ειη ο χριστος |
| [16]John answered and said to them, Behold, I baptize you with water; but one is coming after me, who is greater than I, the strings of whose shoes I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire; |
[16]απεκρινατο ο ιωαννης απασιν λεγων εγω μεν υδατι βαπτιζω υμας ερχεται δε ο ισχυροτερος μου ου ουκ ειμι ικανος λυσαι τον ιμαντα των υποδηματων αυτου αυτος υμας βαπτισει εν πνευματι αγιω και πυρι |
| [17]He holds a shovel in his hand, and purifies his threshing; the wheat he gathers into his barns, and the straw he burns in the unquenchable fire. |
[17]ου το πτυον εν τη χειρι αυτου και διακαθαριει την αλωνα αυτου και συναξει τον σιτον εις την αποθηκην αυτου το δε αχυρον κατακαυσει πυρι ασβεστω |
| [18]Many other things also, he taught and preached to the people. |
[18]πολλα μεν ουν και ετερα παρακαλων ευηγγελιζετο τον λαον |
| [19]Now Herod the tetrarch, because he was rebuked by John concerning Herodias wife of Philip his brother, and for all the evil things that he was doing, |
[19]ο δε ηρωδης ο τετραρχης ελεγχομενος υπ αυτου περι ηρωδιαδος της γυναικος φιλιππου του αδελφου αυτου και περι παντων ων εποιησεν πονηρων ο ηρωδης |
| [20]Added this also to them all, that he put John into prison. |
[20]προσεθηκεν και τουτο επι πασιν και κατεκλεισεν τον ιωαννην εν τη φυλακη |
| [21]It came to pass when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while he prayed the heaven was opened, |
[21]εγενετο δε εν τω βαπτισθηναι απαντα τον λαον και ιησου βαπτισθεντος και προσευχομενου ανεωχθηναι τον ουρανον |
| [22]And the Holy Spirit descended on him, like a dove, and a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, with whom I am pleased. |
[22]και καταβηναι το πνευμα το αγιον σωματικω ειδει ωσει περιστεραν επ αυτον και φωνην εξ ουρανου γενεσθαι λεγουσαν συ ει ο υιος μου ο αγαπητος εν σοι ηυδοκησα |
| [23]Now Jesus was about thirty years old, and he was supposed to be the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, |
[23]και αυτος ην ο ιησους ωσει ετων τριακοντα αρχομενος ων ως ενομιζετο υιος ιωσηφ του ηλι |
| [24]The son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, |
[24]του ματθατ του λευι του μελχι του ιαννα του ιωσηφ |
| [25]The son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, |
[25]του ματταθιου του αμως του ναουμ του εσλι του ναγγαι |
| [26]The son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Juda, |
[26]του μααθ του ματταθιου του σεμει του ιωσηφ του ιουδα |
| [27]The son of John, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, |
[27]του ιωαννα του ρησα του ζοροβαβελ του σαλαθιηλ του νηρι |
| [28]The son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Kosam, the son of Elmodad, the son of Er, |
[28]του μελχι του αδδι του κωσαμ του ελμωδαμ του ηρ |
| [29]The son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Mattitha, the son of Levi, |

| [30]The son of Simon, the son of Juda, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, |

| [38]The son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, who was of God. |
