[1]NOW Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and the Spirit carried him away into the wilderness, |
[1]And Jesus full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, |
[2]Forty days, in order that he might be tempted by the adversary. And he did not eat anything in those days; and when they were over, at last he became hungry. |
[2]And was there forty days tempted of the devil, and in those days he did eat nothing: but when they were ended, he afterward was hungry. |
[3]And the adversary said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. |
[3]Then the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. |
[4]Jesus answered and said to him, It is written, That it is not by bread alone that man can live, but by every word of God. |
[4]But Jesus answered him, saying , It is written, That man shall not live by bread only, but by every word of God. |
[5]Then Satan took him up to a high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the earth in a short time. |
[5]Then the devil took him up into an high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, in the twinkling of an eye. |
[6]And the adversary said to him, I will give you all this power and its glory, which are entrusted to me, and I give it to whom I please; |
[6]And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of those kingdoms: for that is delivered to me: and to whomsoever I will, I give it. |
[7]If therefore you worship me, it will all be yours. |
[7]If thou therefore wilt worship me, they shall be all thine. |
[8]Jesus answered and said to him, It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only you shall serve. |
[8]But Jesus answered him, and said, Hence from me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him alone thou shalt serve. |
[9]And he brought him to Jerusalem and made him to stand up on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; |
[9]Then he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the Temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence, |
[10]For it is written, That he will command his angels concerning you, to watch you; |
[10]For it is written, That he will give his Angels charge over thee to keep thee: |
[11]And they will take you up in their arms, so that even your foot may not strike a stone. |
[11]And with their hands they shall lift thee up, lest at any time thou shouldest dash thy foot against a stone. |
[12]Jesus answered and said to him, It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God. |
[12]And Jesus answered, and said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. |
[13]When the adversary was through with all his temptations, he left him for some time. |
[13]And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. |
[14]So Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and the fame about him went out through all the country around them. |
[14]Â And Jesus returned by the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went a fame of him throughout all the region round about. |
[15]And he taught in their synagogues, and was praised by every man. |
[15]For he taught in their Synagogues, and was honored of all men. |
[16]And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he entered the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was the custom, and stood up to read. |
[16]And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, and (as his custom was) went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. |
[17]And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. And Jesus opened the book, and found the place where it is written, |
[17]And there was delivered unto him the book of the Prophet Isaiah: and when he had opened the book, he found the place, where it was written, |
[18]The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because of this he has anointed me, to preach good tidings to the poor; and he has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, and to proclaim release to the captives, and sight to the blind; to strengthen with forgiveness those who are bruised |
[18]The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me, that I should preach the Gospel to the poor: he hath sent me, that I should heal the broken hearted, that I should preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, that I should set at liberty them that are bruised, |
[19]And to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. |
[19]And that I should preach the acceptable year of the Lord. |
[20]And he rolled up the scroll and gave it to the attendant, and went and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him. |
[20]And he closed the book, and gave it again to the minister, and sat down: and the eyes of all that were in the Synagogue were fastened on him. |
[21]And he began to say to them, To-day this scripture is fulfilled in your ears. |
[21]Then he began to say unto them, This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears. |
[22]And all testified to him, and were amazed by the words of grace which came out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this man the son of Joseph? |
[22]And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words, which proceeded out of his mouth, and said, Is not this Joseph's son? |
[23]Jesus said to them, You might probably tell me this proverb, "Physician, heal yourself"; and all that we heard you did in Capernaum, do also here in your own city. |
[23]Then he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do it here likewise in thine own country. |
[24]Then he said, Truly I say to you, No prophet is acceptable in his own city. |
[24]And he said, Verily I say unto you, No Prophet is accepted in his own country. |
[25]For truly I say to you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of the prophet Elijah, when the heaven was closed for three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout the land; |
[25]But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when heaven was shut three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land, |
[26]Yet Elijah was not sent to one of them, but to Zarephath of Sidon, to a widow. |
[26]But unto none of them was Elijah sent, save into Zarephath, a city of Sidon, unto a certain widow. |
[27]And there were many lepers in Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha, and yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian. |
[27]Also many lepers were in Israel, in the time of Elisha the Prophet: yet none of them was made clean, saving Naaman the Syrian. |
[28]When those who were in the synagogue heard these things, they were all filled with anger. |
[28]Then all that were in the Synagogue, when they heard it, were filled with wrath, |
[29]And they rose up, and took him outside the city, and brought him to the brow of the mountain, on which their city was built, that they might throw him down from a cliff. |
[29]And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the edge of the hill, whereon their city was built, to cast him down headlong. |
[30]But he passed through the midst of them and went away. |
[30]But he passed through the midst of them, and went his way, |
[31]And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and he taught them on the sabbaths. |
[31]Â And came down into Capernaum a city of Galilee, and there taught them on the Sabbath days. |
[32]And they were astonished at his teaching; because his word had power. |
[32]And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with authority. |
[33]And there was in the synagogue a man who had an unclean, demonic spirit, and he cried in a loud voice, |
[33]And in the Synagogue there was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil, which cried with a loud voice, |
[34]And said, Leave me alone, what have we in common, O Jesus the Nazarene? have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, "Holy One of God"! |
[34]Saying, Oh, what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, even the Holy one of God. |
[35]And Jesus rebuked him, and said, Keep quiet, and come out of him. The demon threw him in the midst, and went out of him, and did him no harm. |
[35]And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. Then the devil throwing him in the midst of them, came out of him, and hurt him not. |
[36]And every man was seized with amazement, and spoke among themselves, saying, What kind of word is this, that he commands unclean spirits with authority and power, and they go out! |
[36]So fear came on them all, and they spake among themselves, saying, What thing is this? for with authority and power he commandeth the foul spirits, and they come out? |
[37]And the fame about him went out through all the country around them. |
[37]And the fame of him spread abroad throughout all the places of the country round about. |
[38]And when Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. And Simon's mother-in-law was suffering with a severe fever; and they besought him for her. |
[38]Â And he rose up, and came out of the Synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they required him for her. |
[39]And he stood by her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she rose up immediately and ministered to them. |
[39]Then he stood over her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her: and immediately she arose, and ministered unto them. |
[40]When the sun was setting, all who had sick people suffering from divers diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hand on each one of them, and healed them. |
[40]Now when the sun was down, all they that had sick folks of diverse diseases, brought them unto him, and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. |
[41]Demons also came out of many, who cried out saying, You are the Christ, the Son of God. And he rebuked them, and he would not allow them to speak; that they might not know that he was the Christ. |
[41]And devils also came out of many, crying, and saying, Thou art the Christ the Son of God: but he rebuked them, and suffered them not to say that they knew him to be the Christ. |
[42]And in the morning, he came out and went to a desert place; and the people were looking for him, and came where he was; and they held him so that he might not leave them. |
[42]And when it was day, he departed and went forth into a desert place, and the people sought him, and came to him, and kept him that he should not depart from them. |
[43]But Jesus said to them, I must preach the kingdom of God in other cities also; because I was sent for this. |
[43]But he said unto them, Surely I must also preach the kingdom of God to other cities: for therefore am I sent. |
[44]And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. |
[44]And he preached in the Synagogues of Galilee. |
