[1]`Then shall the reign of the heavens be likened to ten virgins, who, having taken their lamps, went forth to meet the bridegroom; |
[1]THEN shall be likened the kingdom of heaven unto ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom and the bride. |
[2]and five of them were prudent, and five foolish; |
[2]But five of them were wise, and five foolish. |
[3]they who were foolish having taken their lamps, did not take with themselves oil; |
[3]And those foolish [ones] took their lamps, but did not take with them the oil: |
[4]and the prudent took oil in their vessels, with their lamps. |
[4]But those were wise who took oil in vessels with their lamps. |
[5]`And the bridegroom tarrying, they all nodded and were sleeping, |
[5]But while the bridegroom withheld, they all dozed and slept. |
[6]and in the middle of the night a cry was made, Lo, the bridegroom doth come; go ye forth to meet him. |
[6]And in the dividing of the night there was the cry, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go forth to his meeting. |
[7]`Then rose all those virgins, and trimmed their lamps, |
[7]Then all the virgins arose, and prepared their lamps. |
[8]and the foolish said to the prudent, Give us of your oil, because our lamps are going out; |
[8]But those foolish ones said to the wise, Give to us from your oil; for, behold, our lamps are gone out. |
[9]and the prudent answered, saying -- Lest there may not be sufficient for us and you, go ye rather unto those selling, and buy for yourselves. |
[9]But the wise ones answered them, saying, Lest it should not suffice for us and for you; but go to those who sell, and buy for you. |
[10]`And while they are going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those ready went in with him to the marriage-feasts, and the door was shut; |
[10]And while they were gone to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were prepared entered with him into the house of festivity,ⓘ and the gate was shut. |
[11]and afterwards come also do the rest of the virgins, saying, Sir, sir, open to us; |
[11]At last came also those other virgins, saying, Our Lord, our Lord, open to us! |
[12]and he answering said, Verily I say to you, I have not known you. |
[12]But he answered and said to them, Assuredly I tell you, I know you not. |
[13]`Watch therefore, for ye have not known the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man doth come. |
[13]Be wakeful therefore, for you know not that day nor the hour. |
[14]`For -- as a man going abroad did call his own servants, and did deliver to them his substance, |
[14]FOR as a man who journeyed called his servants, and delivered to them his property: |
[15]and to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to each according to his several ability, went abroad immediately. |
[15]To one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, each man according to his faculty; and forthwith went away. |
[16]`And he who did receive the five talents, having gone, wrought with them, and made other five talents; |
[16]But he who had received five talents went and traded with them, and gained five others. |
[17]in like manner also he who [received] the two, he gained, also he, other two; |
[17]Likewise he who [had received] two by trading gained two others. |
[18]and he who did receive the one, having gone away, digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. |
[18]But he who had received one went, dug in the earth, and hid the money of his lord. |
[19]`And after a long time cometh the lord of those servants, and taketh reckoning with them; |
[19]After a long time the lord of those servants came, and received from them the account. |
[20]and he who did receive the five talents having come, brought other five talents, saying, `Sir, five talents thou didst deliver to me; lo, other five talents did I gain besides them. |
[20]Then he drew near who had received the five talents, and brought five others, and said, My lord, five talents thou gavest me: behold, five others I have gained by them. |
[21]`And his lord said to him, Well done, servant, good and faithful, over a few things thou wast faithful, over many things I will set thee; enter into the joy of thy lord. |
[21]His lord said to him, It is well, good and faithful servant; over a little thou hast been faithful, over much I will establish thee: enter into the joy of thy lord. |
[22]`And he who also did receive the two talents having come, said, Sir, two talents thou didst deliver to me; lo, other two talents I did gain besides them. |
[22]And he of the two talents approached, and said, My lord, two talents thou gavest me: behold, two others I have gained by them. |
[23]`His lord said to him, Well done, servant, good and faithful, over a few things thou wast faithful, over many things I will set thee; enter into the joy of thy lord. |
[23]His lord saith to him, It is well, servant good and faithful; over a little thou hast been faithful, over much will I establish thee: enter into the joy of thy lord. |
[24]`And he also who hath received the one talent having come, said, Sir, I knew thee, that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou didst not sow, and gathering from whence thou didst not scatter; |
[24]But he also drew near who had received the one talent, and said, My lord, I knew thee, that thou wast a hard man, reaping where thou hadst not sowed, and gathering together from whence thou hadst not dispersed. |
[25]and having been afraid, having gone away, I hid thy talent in the earth; lo, thou hast thine own! |
[25]And I feared, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: behold, thou hast thine own. |
[26]`And his lord answering said to him, Evil servant, and slothful, thou hadst known that I reap where I did not sow, and I gather whence I did not scatter! |
[26]His lord answered, Thou evil and slothful servant, thou didst know me that I reap where I have not sowed, and collect from whence I have not dispersed. |
[27]it behoved thee then to put my money to the money-lenders, and having come I had received mine own with increase. |
[27]Did it not behove thee to cast my money upon the table, that when I came I might require mine own with its increase? |
[28]`Take therefore from him the talent, and give to him having the ten talents, |
[28]Take therefore from him the talent, and give it unto him who hath ten talents. |
[29]for to every one having shall be given, and he shall have overabundance, and from him who is not having, even that which he hath shall be taken from him; |
[29]For unto him who hath shall be given, and it shall be added to him; but he who hath not, that also which he hath shall be taken from him. |
[30]and the unprofitable servant cast ye forth to the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth. |
[30]And the indolent servant cast forth into the darknesses without; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. |
[31]`And whenever the Son of Man may come in his glory, and all the holy messengers with him, then he shall sit upon a throne of his glory; |
[31]WHEN the Son of man cometh in his glory, and all his holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. |
[32]and gathered together before him shall be all the nations, and he shall separate them from one another, as the shepherd doth separate the sheep from the goats, |
[32]And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats. |
[33]and he shall set the sheep indeed on his right hand, and the goats on the left. |
[33]And he shall cause the sheep to stand upon his right hand, and the goats on his left. |
[34]`Then shall the king say to those on his right hand, Come ye, the blessed of my Father, inherit the reign that hath been prepared for you from the foundation of the world; |
[34]Then shall the King say to them on his right hand, Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom which was to be for you from the foundation of the world. |
[35]for I did hunger, and ye gave me to eat; I did thirst, and ye gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and ye received me; |
[35]For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I thirsted, and you made me to drink; I was a stranger, and you received me; |
[36]naked, and ye put around me; I was infirm, and ye looked after me; in prison I was, and ye came unto me. |
[36]I was naked, and you covered me; I was sick, and you cared for me; and I was in prison, and you came to me. |
[37]`Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungering, and we nourished? or thirsting, and we gave to drink? |
[37]Then shall say unto him those righteous, Our Lord! when did we see that thou wast hungry, and fed thee, or that thou didst thirst, and we gave thee drink? |
[38]and when did we see thee a stranger, and we received? or naked, and we put around? |
[38]And when did we see thee a stranger, and received thee, or naked, and covered thee? |
[39]and when did we see thee infirm, or in prison, and we came unto thee? |
[39]And when did we see thee sick, or in prison, and came to thee? |
[40]`And the king answering, shall say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] to one of these my brethren -- the least -- to me ye did [it]. |
[40]And the King shall answer and say to them, Amen I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it unto one of these my least brethren, unto me you did it. |
[41]Then shall he say also to those on the left hand, Go ye from me, the cursed, to the fire, the age-during, that hath been prepared for the Devil and his messengers; |
[41]Then shall he say also unto them on his left hand, Go from me, accursed, into the fire of eternity, which was prepared for the accuser and for his angels. |
[42]for I did hunger, and ye gave me not to eat; I did thirst, and ye gave me not to drink; |
[42]For I was hungry and you gave me not to eat; and I thirsted, but you made me not to drink; |
[43]a stranger I was, and ye did not receive me; naked, and ye put not around me; infirm, and in prison, and ye did not look after me. |
[43]And I was a stranger, and you received me not; and naked, and you clothed me not; and I was sick, and in prison, and you visited me not. |
[44]`Then shall they answer, they also, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungering, or thirsting, or a stranger, or naked, or infirm, or in prison, and we did not minister to thee? |
[44]Then shall they also answer and say, Our Lord! when saw we thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? |
[45]`Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] not to one of these, the least, ye did [it] not to me. |
[45]Then shall he answer and say to them, Amen I say unto you, that inasmuch as you did it not unto one of these little ones, you did it not to me. |
[46]And these shall go away to punishment age-during, but the righteous to life age-during.' |
[46]And these shall go away into the torment which is eternal, and the just into the life which is eternal. |
