| [1]And when Jesus saw the multitudes, he ascended a hill; and when he was seated, his disciples drew near him: |
[1]כד חזא דינ ישׁוע לכנשׁא סלק לטורא וכד יתב קרבו לותה תלמידוהי |
| [2]and he opened his mouth, and taught them, and said: |
[2]ופתח פומה ומלפ הוא להונ ואמר |
| [3]Blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom of heaven is theirs! |
[3]טוביהונ למסכנא ברוח דדילהונ הי מלכותא דשׁמיא |
| [4]Blessed are the mourners: for they shall be comforted! |
[4]טוביהונ לאבילא דהנונ נתביאונ |
| [5]Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth! |
[5]טוביהונ למכיכא דהנונ נארתונ לארעא |
| [6]Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be satiated! |
[6]טוביהונ לאילינ דכפנינ וצהינ לכאנותא דהנונ נסבעונ |
| [7]Blessed are the merciful: for on them shall be mercies! |
[7]טוביהונ למרחמנא דעליהונ נהוונ רחמא |
| [8]Blessed are the clean in heart: for they shall behold God ! |
[8]טוביהונ לאילינ דדכינ בלבהונ דהנונ נחזונ לאלהא |
| [9]Blessed are the cultivators of peace: for they shall be called sons of God ! |
[9]טוביהונ לעבדי שׁלמא דבנוהי דאלהא נתקרונ |
| [10]Blessed are they that are persecuted on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs! |
[10]טוביהונ לאילינ דאתרדפו מטל כאנותא דדילהונ הי מלכותא דשׁמיא |
| [11]Blessed are ye, when they revile you and persecute you, and speak every evil thing against you, falsely, on my account. |
[11]טוביכונ אמתי דמחסדינ לכונ ורדפינ לכונ ואמרינ עליכונ כל מלא בישׁא מטלתי בדגלותא |
| [12]At that time, rejoice and be glad: for your reward in heaven is great. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you. |
[12]הידינ חדו ורוזו דאגרכונ סגי בשׁמיא הכנא גיר רדפו לנביא דמנ קדמיכונ |
| [13]Ye are the salt of the earth! But if the salt become insipid, with what shall it be seasoned? It is fit for nothing; but to be thrown out, and be trodden under foot by men. |
[13]אנתונ אנונ מלחה דארעא אנהו דינ דמלחא תפכה במנא תתמלח למדמ לא אזלא אלא דתשׁתדא לבר ותתדישׁ מנ אנשׁא |
| [14]Ye are the light of the world! A city built upon a hill, not be concealed. |
[14]אנתונ אנונ נוהרה דעלמא לא משׁכחא דתטשׁא מדינתא דעל טורא בניא |
| [15]And they do not light a lamp and place it under a bushel; but upon a lightstand, and it giveth light to all that are in the house. |
[15]ולא מנהרינ שׁרגא וסימינ לה תחית סאתא אלא על מנרתא ומנהר לכל אילינ דבביתא אנונ |
| [16]Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who is in heaven. |
[16]הכנא ננהר נוהרכונ קדמ בנינשׁא דנחזונ עבדיכונ טבא ונשׁבחונ לאבוכונ דבשׁמיא |
| [17]Do not suppose that I have come to subvert the law or the prophets: [I have come] not to subvert, but to fulfill. |
[17]לא תסברונ דאתית דאשׁרא נמוסא או נביא לא אתית דאשׁרא אלא דאמלא |
| [18]For verily I say to you, that until heaven and earth shall pass away, one iota or one letter shall not pass from the law, until all shall be fulfilled. |
[18]אמינ גיר אמר אנא לכונ דעדמא דנעברונ שׁמיא וארעא יוד חדא או חד סרטא לא נעבר מנ נמוסא עדמא דכל נהוא |
| [19]Therefore whoever shall break one of these small commands and shall so inculcate on the children of men, shall be called little in the kingdom of heaven: but every one that shall do and teach [them], shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. |
[19]כל מנ הכיל דנשׁרא חד מנ פוקדנא הלינ זעורא ונלפ הכנא לבנינשׁא בצירא נתקרא במלכותא דשׁמיא כל דינ דנעבד ונלפ הנא רבא נתקרא במלכותא דשׁמיא |
| [20]For I say to you, that unless your righteousness shall abound more than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. |
[20]אמר אנא לכונ גיר דאלא תאתר כאנותכונ יתיר מנ דספרא ופרישׁא לא תעלונ למלכותא דשׁמיא |
| [21]Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill: and every one that killeth, is obnoxious to judgment. |
[21]שׁמעתונ דאתאמר לקדמיא לא תקטול וכל דנקטול מחיב הו לדינא |
| [22]But I say to you, That every one who is angry with his brother rashly, is obnoxious to judgment: and every one that saith to his brother, Raka! is obnoxious to the council : and every one that shall say, Fool is obnoxious to hell-fire. |
[22]אנא דינ אמר אנא לכונ דכל מנ דנרגז על אחוהי איקא מחיב הו לדינא וכל דנאמר לאחוהי רקא מחיב הו לכנושׁתא ומנ דנאמר ללא מחיב הו לגהנא דנורא |
| [23]If therefore thou shalt bring thy oblation to the altar, and shalt there remember that thy brother hath any offence against thee, |
[23]אנ הו הכיל דמקרב אנת קורבנכ על מדבחא ותמנ תתדכר דאחיד עליכ אחוכ אכתא מדמ |
| [24]leave there thy oblation before the altar, and go first and be reconciled with thy brother; and then come and present thy oblation. |
[24]שׁבוק תמנ קורבנכ קדמ מדבחא וזל לוקדמ אתרעא עמ אחוכ והידינ תא קרב קורבנכ |
| [25]Be at agreement with thy prosecutor, forthwith, and while on the way with him; lest the prosecutor deliver thee up to the judge, and the Judge deliver thee over to the sheriff, and thou fall into the house of prisoners. |
[25]הוית מתאוא עמ בעל דינכ עגל עד עמה אנת באורחא דלמא בעל דינכ נשׁלמכ לדינא ודינא נשׁלמכ לגביא ותפל בית אסירא |
| [26]Verily I say to thee, Thou wilt not come out from there until thou hast paid the last farthing. |
[26]ואמינ אמר אנא לכ דלא תפוק מנ תמנ עדמא דתתל שׁמונא אחריא |
| [27]Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery. |
[27]שׁמעתונ דאתאמר דלא תגור |
| [28]But I say to you, That whoever gazeth on a woman with concupiscence, at once committeth adultery with her in his heart. |
[28]אנא דינ אמר אנא לכונ דכל מנ דחזא אנתתא איכ דנרגיה מחדא גרה בלבה |
| [29]If therefore thy right eye make thee offend, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; because it is better for thee that thy one member perish, than that thy whole body fall into hell. |
[29]אנ דינ עינכ דימינא מכשׁלא לכ חציה ושׁדיה מנכ פקח לכ גיר דנאבד חד הדמכ ולא כלה פגרכ נפל בגהנא |
| [30]And if thy right hand make thee offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee; because it is better for thee that one of thy members perish, than that thy whole body fall into hell. |
[30]ואנ אידכ דימינא מכשׁלא לכ פסוק שׁדיה מנכ פקח לכ גיר דנאבד חד מנ הדמיכ ולא כלה פגרכ נפל בגהנא |
| [31]It hath been said, That if a man will put away his wife, he must give her a writing of divorcement. |
[31]אתאמר דמנ דשׁרא אנתתה נתל לה כתבא דדוללא |
| [32]But I say to you, That whoever putteth away his wife, except for the offence of whoredom, causeth her to commit adultery: and he that taketh the divorced woman, committeth adultery. |
[32]אנא דינ אמר אנא לכונ דכל מנ דשׁרא אנתתה לבר מנ מלתא דזניותא עבד לה דתגור ומנ דשׁקל שׁביקתא גאר |
| [33]Again, ye have heard that it hath been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not be false in thy oaths; but thou shalt perform thine oaths to the Lord. |
[33]תוב שׁמעתונ דאתאמר לקדמיא דלא תדגל במומתכ תשׁלמ דינ למריא מומתכ |
| [34]But I say to you, Swear not at all: not by heaven, for it is the throne of God: |
[34]אנא דינ אמר אנא לכונ לא תאמונ סכ לא בשׁמיא דכורסיא הו דאלהא |
| [35]and not by the earth, for it is the footstool under his feet: and likewise not by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king. |
[35]ולא בארעא דכובשׁא הי דתחית רגלוהי אפלא באורישׁלמ דמדינתה הי דמלכא רבא |
| [36]Moreover, thou shalt not swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair in it either black or white. |
[36]אפלא ברשׁכ תאמא דלא משׁכח אנת למעבד בה מנתא חדא דסערא אוכמתא או חורתא |
| [37]But let your language be, Yes, yes; or No, no; for whatever is beyond these proceedeth from evil. |
[37]אלא תהוא מלתכונ אינ אינ ולא לא מדמ דמנ הלינ יתיר מנ בישׁא הו |
| [38]Ye have heard that it hath been said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. |
[38]שׁמעתונ דאתאמר דעינא חלפ עינא ושׁנא חלפ שׁנא |
| [39]But I say to you: Resist not evil; but if a person smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. |
[39]אנא דינ אמר אנא לכונ דלא תקומונ לוקבל בישׁא אלא מנ דמחא לכ על פככ דימינא אפנא לה אפ אחרנא |
| [40]And if one is disposed to sue thee and get away thy coat, relinquish to him also thy cloak. |
[40]ומנ דצבא דנדונ עמכ ונשׁקול כותינכ שׁבוק לה אפ מרטוטכ |
| [41]Whoever compelleth thee to go one mile, go with him two. |
[41]מנ דמשׁחר לכ מילא חד זל עמה תרינ |
| [42]Whoever demandeth of thee, give to him: and whoever wisheth to borrow of thee, deny him not. |
[42]מנ דשׁאל לכ הב לה ומנ דצבא דנאזפ מנכ לא תכליוהי |
| [43]Ye have heard that it hath been said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy. |
[43]שׁמעתונ דאתאמר דרחמ לקריבכ וסני לבעלדבבכ |
| [44]But I say to you: Love your enemies; and bless him that curseth you; and do good to him that hateth you; and pray for them that lead you in bonds, and that persecute you: |
[44]אנא דינ אמר אנא לכונ אחבו לבעלדבביכונ וברכו למנ דלאט לכונ ועבדו דשׁפיר למנ דסנא לכונ וצלו על אילינ דדברינ לכונ בקטירא ורדפינ לכונ |
| [45]that ye may be the children of your Father that is in heaven, who causeth his sun to rise upon the good and upon the bad, and sendeth his rain upon the righteous and upon the unrighteous. |
[45]איכנא דתהוונ בנוהי דאבוכונ דבשׁמיא הו דמדנח שׁמשׁה על טבא ועל בישׁא ומחת מטרה על כאנא ועל עולא |
| [46]For, if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans do this? |
[46]אנ גיר מחבינ אנתונ לאילינ דמחבינ לכונ מנא אגרא אית לכונ לא הא אפ מכסא הי הדא עבדינ |
| [47]And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye that is not common? Do not even publicans do this? |
[47]ואנ שׁאלינ אנתונ בשׁלמא דאחיכונ בלחוד מנא יתיר עבדינ אנתונ לא הא אפ מכסא הי הדא עבדינ |
| [48]Be ye therefore perfect; even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect. |
[48]הוו הכיל אנתונ גמירא איכנא דאבוכונ דבשׁמיא גמיר הו |
