The Septuagint in English by Brenton
LXX(EN)
[1]Now it came to pass, when SanballatH5571, and TobiahH2900, and GeshemH1654 the ArabianH6163, and the restH3499 of our enemiesH341[H8802], heardH8085[H8738] that I had buildedH1129[H8804] the wallH2346, and that there was no breachH6556 leftH3498[H8738] therein; (thoughH1571[H5704] at that timeH6256 I had not set upH5975[H8689] the doorsH1817 upon the gatesH8179;) [1]Now it came to pass, when Sanaballat, and Tobias, and Gesam the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no opening left therein; (but hitherto I had not set up the doors on the gates;)
[2]That SanballatH5571 and GeshemH1654 sentH7971[H8799] unto me, sayingH559[H8800], ComeH3212[H8798], let us meetH3259[H8735] togetherH3162 in some one of the villagesH3715 in the plainH1237 of OnoH207. But they thoughtH2803[H8802] to doH6213[H8800] me mischiefH7451. [2]that Sanaballat and Gesam sent to me, saying, Come and let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono. But they were plotting to do me mischief.
[3]And I sentH7971[H8799] messengersH4397 unto them, sayingH559[H8800], I am doingH6213[H8802] a greatH1419 workH4399, so that I cannotH3201[H8799] come downH3381[H8800]: why should the workH4399 ceaseH7673[H8799], whilstH834 I leaveH7503[H8686] it, and come downH3381 to youH8804? [3]So I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, and I shall not be able to come down, lest the work should cease: as soon as I shall have finished it, I will come down to you.
[4]Yet they sentH7971[H8799] unto me fourH702 timesH6471 after this sortH1697; and I answeredH7725[H8686] them after the same mannerH1697. [4]And they sent to me again to this effect; and I sent them word accordingly.
[5]Then sentH7971[H8799] SanballatH5571 his servantH5288 unto me in like mannerH1697 the fifthH2549 timeH6471 with an openH6605[H8803] letterH107 in his handH3027; [5]Then Sanaballat sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand.
[6]Wherein was writtenH3789[H8803], It is reportedH8085[H8738] among the heathenH1471, and GashmuH1654 saithH559[H8802] it, that thou and the JewsH3064 thinkH2803[H8802] to rebelH4775[H8800]: for which causeH3651 thou buildestH1129[H8802] the wallH2346, that thou mayest beH1933[H8802] their kingH4428, according to these wordsH1697. [6]And in it was written, It has been reported among the Gentiles that thou and the Jews are planning to revolt: therefore thou art building the wall, and thou wilt be a king to them.
[7]And thou hast also appointedH5975[H8689] prophetsH5030 to preachH7121[H8800] of thee at JerusalemH3389, sayingH559[H8800], There is a kingH4428 in JudahH3063: and now shall it be reportedH8085[H8735] to the kingH4428 according to these wordsH1697. ComeH3212[H8798] now therefore, and let us take counselH3289[H8735] togetherH3162. [7]And moreover thou has appointed prophets to thyself, that thou mightest dwell in Jerusalem as a king over Juda: and now these words will be reported to the king. Now then, come, let us take counsel together.
[8]Then I sentH7971[H8799] unto him, sayingH559[H8800], There areH1961 no such thingsH1697 doneH1961[H8738] as thou sayestH559[H8802], but thou feignestH908[H8802] them out of thine own heartH3820. [8]And I sent to him, saying, It has not happened according to these words, even as thou sayest, for thou framest them falsely out of thy heart.
[9]For they all made us afraidH3372[H8764], sayingH559[H8800], Their handsH3027 shall be weakenedH7503[H8799] from the workH4399, that it be not doneH6213[H8735]. Now therefore, O God, strengthenH2388[H8761] my handsH3027. [9]For all were trying to alarm us, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from this work, and it shall not be done. Now therefore I have strengthened my hands.
[10]Afterward I cameH935[H8804] unto the houseH1004 of ShemaiahH8098 the sonH1121 of DelaiahH1806 the sonH1121 of MehetabeelH4105, who was shut upH6113[H8803]; and he saidH559[H8799], Let us meet togetherH3259[H8735] in the houseH1004 of GodH430, withinH8432 the templeH1964, and let us shutH5462[H8799] the doorsH1817 of the templeH1964: for they will comeH935[H8802] to slayH2026[H8800] thee; yea, in the nightH3915 will they comeH935[H8802] to slayH2026 theeH8800. [10]And I came into the house of Semei the son of Dalaia the Son of Metabeel, and he was shut up; and he said, Let us assemble together in the house of God, in the midst of it, and let us shut the doors of it; for they are coming by night to slay thee.
[11]And I saidH559[H8799], Should suchH3644 a manH376 as I fleeH1272[H8799]? and who is there, that, being as I am, would goH935[H8799] into the templeH1964 to save his lifeH2425[H8804]? I will not go inH935.[H8799] [11]And I said, Who is the man that shall enter into the house, that he may live?
[12]And, lo, I perceivedH5234[H8686] that GodH430 had not sentH7971[H8804] him; but that he pronouncedH1696[H8765] this prophecyH5016 against me: for TobiahH2900 and SanballatH5571 had hiredH7936 himH8804. [12]And I observed, and, behold, God had not sent him, for the prophecy was a fable devised against me:
[13]Therefore was he hiredH7936[H8803], that I should be afraidH3372[H8799], and do soH6213[H8799], and sinH2398[H8804], and that they might have matter for an evilH7451 reportH8034, that they might reproachH2778 meH8762. [13]and Tobias and Sanaballat had hired against me a multitude, that I might be frightened, and do this, and sin, and become to them an ill name, that they might reproach me.
[14]My GodH430, thinkH2142[H8798] thou upon TobiahH2900 and SanballatH5571 according to these their worksH4639, and on the prophetessH5031 NoadiahH5129, and the restH3499 of the prophetsH5030, that would have put me in fearH3372.[H8764] [14]Remember, O God, Tobias and Sanaballat, according to these their deeds, and the prophetess Noadia, and the rest of the prophets who tried to alarm me.
[15]So the wallH2346 was finishedH7999[H8799] in the twentyH6242 and fifthH2568 day of the month ElulH435, in fiftyH2572 and twoH8147 daysH3117. [15]So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.
[16]And it came to pass, that when all our enemiesH341[H8802] heardH8085[H8804] thereof, and all the heathenH1471 that were about usH5439 sawH7200[H8799] these things, they were muchH3966 cast downH5307[H8799] in their own eyesH5869: for they perceivedH3045[H8799] that this workH4399 was wroughtH6213[H8738] of our GodH430. [16]And it came to pass, when all our enemies heard of it, that all the nations round about us feared, and great alarm fell upon them, and they knew that it was of our God that this work should be finished.
[17]Moreover in those daysH3117 the noblesH2715 of JudahH3063 sentH1980[H8802] manyH7235[H8688] lettersH107 unto TobiahH2900, and the letters of TobiahH2900 cameH935 unto themH8802. [17]And in those days letters came to Tobias from many nobles of Juda, and those of Tobias came to them.
[18]For there were manyH7227 in JudahH3063 swornH1167[H7621] unto him, because he was the son in lawH2860 of ShechaniahH7935 the sonH1121 of ArahH733; and his sonH1121 JohananH3076 had takenH3947[H8804] the daughterH1323 of MeshullamH4918 the sonH1121 of BerechiahH1296. [18]For many in Juda were bound to him by oath, because he was son-in-law of Sechenias the son of Herae; and Jonan his son had taken the daughter of Mesulam the son of Barachia to wife.
[19]Also they reportedH559[H8802] his good deedsH2896 beforeH6440 me, and utteredH3318[H8688] my wordsH1697 to him. And TobiahH2900 sentH7971[H8804] lettersH107 to put me in fearH3372.[H8763] [19]And they reported his words to me, and carried out my words to him: and Tobias sent letters to terrify me.
