| [1]Now whiles Israel abode in Shittim, the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab: |
[1]וישב ישראל בשטים ויחל העם לזנות אל בנות מואב |
| [2]Which called the people unto the sacrifice of their gods, and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods. |
[2]ותקראן לעם לזבחי אלהיהן ויאכל העם וישתחוו לאלהיהן |
| [3]And Israel coupled himself unto Baal Peor: wherefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled against Israel: |
[3]ויצמד ישראל לבעל פעור ויחר אף יהוה בישראל |
| [4]And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the indignation of the Lord's wrath may be turned from Israel. |
[4]ויאמר יהוה אל משה קח את כל ראשי העם והוקע אותם ליהוה נגד השמש וישב חרון אף יהוה מישראל |
| [5]Then Moses said unto the Judges of Israel, Every one slay his men that were joined unto Baal Peor. |
[5]ויאמר משה אל שפטי ישראל הרגו איש אנשיו הנצמדים לבעל פעור |
| [6]And behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who wept before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. |
[6]והנה איש מבני ישראל בא ויקרב אל אחיו את המדינית לעיני משה ולעיני כל עדת בני ישראל והמה בכים פתח אהל מועד |
| [7]And when Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand, |
[7]וירא פינחס בן אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן ויקם מתוך העדה ויקח רמח בידו |
| [8]And followed the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust them both through: to wit, the man of Israel, and the woman, through her belly: so the plague ceased from the children of Israel. |
[8]ויבא אחר איש ישראל אל הקבה וידקר את שניהם־את איש ישראל ואת האשה אל קבתה ותעצר המגפה מעל בני ישראל |
| [9]And there died in that plague, four and twenty thousand. |
[9]ויהיו המתים במגפה־ארבעה ועשרים אלף |
| [10]Then the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, |
[10]וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר |
| [11]Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned mine anger away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them: therefore I have not consumed the children of Israel in my jealousy. |
[11]פינחס בן אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן השיב את חמתי מעל בני ישראל בקנאו את קנאתי בתוכם ולא כליתי את בני ישראל בקנאתי |
| [12]Wherefore say to him, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace, |
[12]לכן אמר הנני נתן לו את בריתי שלום |
| [13]And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of the priest's office forever, because he was zealous for his God, and hath made an atonement for the children of Israel. |
[13]והיתה לו ולזרעו אחריו ברית כהנת עולם־תחת אשר קנא לאלהיו ויכפר על בני ישראל |
| [14]And the name of the Israelite thus slain, which was killed with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, prince of the family of the Simeonites. |
[14]ושם איש ישראל המכה אשר הכה את המדינית־זמרי בן סלוא נשיא בית אב לשמעני |
| [15]And the name of the Midianitish woman, that was slain, was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was head over the people of his father's house in Midian. |
[15]ושם האשה המכה המדינית כזבי בת צור ראש אמות בית אב במדין הוא |
| [16]Again the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, |
[16]וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר |
| [17]Vex the Midianites, and smite them: |
[17]צרור את המדינים והכיתם אותם |
| [18]For they trouble you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you as concerning Peor, and as concerning their sister Cozbi the daughter of a prince of Midian, which was slain in the day of the plague because of Peor. |
[18]כי צררים הם לכם בנכליהם אשר נכלו לכם על דבר פעור ועל דבר כזבי בת נשיא מדין אחתם המכה ביום המגפה על דבר פעור |
