Peshitta (Lamsa, 1933)
Pes(Lam)
Young's Literal Translation
YLT
[1]A WISE son makes his father glad, but a foolish son brings shame to his mother [1]Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth a father to rejoice, And a foolish son [is] an affliction to his mother.
[2]Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivers from death. [2]Treasures of wickedness profit not, And righteousness delivereth from death.
[3]The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but he casts away the substance of the wicked [3]Jehovah causeth not the soul of the righteous to hunger, And the desire of the wicked He thrusteth away.
[4]Poverty humbles a man; but the hands of diligent men make rich [4]Poor [is] he who is working -- a slothful hand, And the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
[5]He who works in summer is a wise man; but he who sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame [5]Whoso is gathering in summer [is] a wise son, Whoso is sleeping in harvest [is] a son causing shame.
[6]Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; but iniquity covers the mouth of the wicked [6]Blessings [are] for the head of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.
[7]The memory of the just is a blessing; but the heir of the wicked shall be extinct [7]The remembrance of the righteous [is] for a blessing, And the name of the wicked doth rot.
[8]The wise in heart will receive commandments; but one whose lips are full of folly shall be caught [8]The wise in heart accepteth commands, And a talkative fool kicketh.
[9]He who walks uprightly walks in hope; but he who perverts his ways shall be known [9]Whoso is walking in integrity walketh confidently, And whoso is perverting his ways is known.
[10]He who winks with his eyes deceitfully causes sorrow; but he who reproves openly makes peace [10]Whoso is winking the eye giveth grief, And a talkative fool kicketh.
[11]The mouth of a righteous man is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked is covered with iniquity [11]A fountain of life [is] the mouth of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.
[12]Hatred stirs up strife; shame shall cover all the wicked [12]Hatred awaketh contentions, And over all transgressions love covereth.
[13]He who brings forth wisdom out of his lips shall beat with a rod him that lacks understanding [13]In the lips of the intelligent is wisdom found, And a rod [is] for the back of him who is lacking understanding.
[14]Wise men conceal knowledge; but a hasty mouth is near destruction [14]The wise lay up knowledge, and the mouth of a fool [is] near ruin.
[15]The rich men's wealth is their strong cities; the destruction of the poor is their poverty [15]The wealth of the rich [is] his strong city, The ruin of the poor [is] their poverty.
[16]The labor of the righteous tends to life; the harvest of the wicked to sin [16]The wage of the righteous [is] for life, The increase of the wicked for sin.
[17]The true way of life brings discipline; but he who hates reproof is a fool [17]A traveller to life [is] he who is keeping instruction, And whoso is forsaking rebuke is erring.
[18]The lips of the wicked are full of deceits, and he who utters a curse is a fool [18]Whoso is covering hatred with lying lips, And whoso is bringing out an evil report is a fool.
[19]The wicked cannot be delivered by a multitude of words; but he who refrains his lips is wise [19]In the abundance of words transgression ceaseth not, And whoso is restraining his lips [is] wise.
[20]The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver; the heart of the wicked is full of bitterness. [20]The tongue of the righteous [is] chosen silver, The heart of the wicked -- as a little thing.
[21]The lips of the righteous are full of mercy; but the fools die for want of wisdom [21]The lips of the righteous delight many, And fools for lack of heart die.
[22]The blessings of the LORD bring riches, and there shall be no sorrow in them [22]The blessing of Jehovah -- it maketh rich, And He addeth no grief with it.
[23]It is sport to a fool to do mischief; but a man of understanding has wisdom [23]To execute inventions [is] as play to a fool, And wisdom to a man of understanding.
[24]The wicked shall be dragged to ruin; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted. [24]The feared thing of the wicked it meeteth him, And the desire of the righteous is given.
[25]As the whirlwind passes suddenly, so wicked men shall perish and be no more; but the righteous are an everlasting foundation [25]As the passing by of a hurricane, So the wicked is not, And the righteous is a foundation age-during.
[26]As unripe grapes are hurtful to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so does wickedness hurt those who indulge in it [26]As vinegar to the teeth, And as smoke to the eyes, So [is] the slothful to those sending him.
[27]Reverence for the LORD prolongs life; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. [27]The fear of Jehovah addeth days, And the years of the wicked are shortened.
[28]The hope of the righteous shall be gladness; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish [28]The hope of the righteous [is] joyful, And the expectation of the wicked perisheth.
[29]The way of the LORD is strength to the upright; but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity. [29]The way of Jehovah [is] strength to the perfect, And ruin to workers of iniquity.
[30]The righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth [30]The righteous to the age is not moved, And the wicked inhabit not the earth.
[31]The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom; but a perverse tongue shall be silenced. [31]The mouth of the righteous uttereth wisdom, And the tongue of frowardness is cut out.
[32]The lips of the righteous know what is good; but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse things [32]The lips of the righteous know a pleasing thing, And the mouth of the wicked perverseness!
