[[To him that excelleth.] A Psalm Chapter of David.]
[1]DELIVER me, O LORD, from the evil man; preserve me from violent men, [1]Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the cruel man:
[2]Who devise mischiefs in their heart; continually do they stir up contention. [2]Which imagine evil things in their heart, and make war continually.
[3]They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. [3]They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent: adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.
[4]Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have purposed to prevent my goings. [4]Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked: preserve me from the cruel man, which purposeth to cause my steps to slide.
[5]The proud have hid a snare for me; the cords of their net have they spread over my paths; they have set a trap for me. [5]The proud have laid a snare for me, and spread a net with cords in my pathway, and set gins for me. Selah.
[6]I said to the LORD, Thou art my God; hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD. [6]Therefore I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear, O Lord, the voice of my prayers.
[7]O LORD, my mighty Saviour, thou art the shield of my head in the day of battle. [7]O Lord God the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered mine head in the day of battle.
[8]Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; further not their wicked devices; let them not accomplish their purpose. [8]Let not the wicked have his desire, O Lord: perform not his wicked thought, lest they be proud. Selah.
[9]Let the mischief of their own lips cover them. [9]As for the chief of them, that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips come upon them.
[10]Let burning coals fall upon them; let them fall into the fire, that they rise not up again. [10]Let coals fall upon them: let him cast them into the fire, and into the deep pits, that they rise not.
[11]Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth; evil shall hunt the violent man to destroy him. [11]For the backbiters shall not be established upon the earth: evil shall hunt the cruel man to destruction.
[12]I know that the LORD will defend the cause of the afflicted and the right of the poor. [12]I know that the Lord will avenge the afflicted, and judge the poor.
[13]Surely the righteous shall give thanks to thy name; the upright shall dwell in thy presence. [13]Surely the righteous shall praise thy name, and the just shall dwell in thy presence.
