[[To him that excelleth.] A Psalm Chapter of David.]
[1]To the Overseer. -- A Psalm of David. Deliver me, O Jehovah, from an evil man, From one of violence Thou keepest me. [1]Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the cruel man:
[2]Who have devised evils in the heart, All the day they assemble [for] wars. [2]Which imagine evil things in their heart, and make war continually.
[3]They sharpened their tongue as a serpent, Poison of an adder [is] under their lips. Selah. [3]They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent: adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.
[4]Preserve me, Jehovah, from the hands of the wicked, From one of violence Thou keepest me, Who have devised to overthrow my steps. [4]Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked: preserve me from the cruel man, which purposeth to cause my steps to slide.
[5]The proud hid a snare for me -- and cords, They spread a net by the side of the path, Snares they have set for me. Selah. [5]The proud have laid a snare for me, and spread a net with cords in my pathway, and set gins for me. Selah.
[6]I have said to Jehovah, `My God [art] Thou, Hear, Jehovah, the voice of my supplications.' [6]Therefore I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear, O Lord, the voice of my prayers.
[7]O Jehovah, my Lord, strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of armour. [7]O Lord God the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered mine head in the day of battle.
[8]Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked, His wicked device bring not forth, They are high. Selah. [8]Let not the wicked have his desire, O Lord: perform not his wicked thought, lest they be proud. Selah.
[9]The chief of my surrounders, The perverseness of their lips covereth them. [9]As for the chief of them, that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips come upon them.
[10]They cause to fall on themselves burning coals, Into fire He doth cast them, Into deep pits -- they arise not. [10]Let coals fall upon them: let him cast them into the fire, and into the deep pits, that they rise not.
[11]A talkative man is not established in the earth, One of violence -- evil hunteth to overflowing. [11]For the backbiters shall not be established upon the earth: evil shall hunt the cruel man to destruction.
[12]I have known that Jehovah doth execute The judgment of the afflicted, The judgment of the needy. [12]I know that the Lord will avenge the afflicted, and judge the poor.
[13]Only -- the righteous give thanks to Thy name, The upright do dwell with Thy presence! [13]Surely the righteous shall praise thy name, and the just shall dwell in thy presence.
