[1]If one be foundH4672[H8735] slainH2491 in the landH127 which the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 givethH5414[H8802] thee to possessH3423[H8800] it, lyingH5307[H8802] in the fieldH7704, and it be not knownH3045[H8738] who hath slainH5221 himH8689: [1]If one be found slain in the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it is not known who hath slain him,
[2]Then thy eldersH2205 and thy judgesH8199[H8802] shall come forthH3318[H8804], and they shall measureH4058[H8804] unto the citiesH5892 which are round aboutH5439 him that is slainH2491: [2]Then thine elders and thy judges shall come forth, and measure unto the cities that are round about him that is slain.
[3]And it shall be, that the cityH5892 which is nextH7138 unto the slain manH2491, even the eldersH2205 of that cityH5892 shall takeH3947[H8804] an heiferH1241[H5697], which hath not been wrought withH5647[H8795], and which hath not drawnH4900[H8804] in the yokeH5923; [3]And let the elders of that city, which is next unto the slain man, take out of the drove an heifer that hath not been put to labor, nor hath drawn in the yoke.
[4]And the eldersH2205 of that cityH5892 shall bring downH3381[H8689] the heiferH5697 unto a roughH386 valleyH5158, which is neither earedH5647[H8735] nor sownH2232[H8735], and shall strike offH6202 the heifer'sH5697 neckH6202[H8804] there in the valleyH5158: [4]And let the elders of that city bring the heifer unto a stony valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley.
[5]And the priestsH3548 the sonsH1121 of LeviH3878 shall come nearH5066[H8738]; for them the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath chosenH977[H8804] to ministerH8334[H8763] unto him, and to blessH1288[H8763] in the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068; and by their wordH6310 shall every controversyH7379 and every stroke be triedH5061: [5]Also the priests the sons of Levi (whom the Lord thy God hath chosen to minister, and to bless in the name of the Lord) shall come forth, and by their word shall all strife and plague be tried.
[6]And all the eldersH2205 of that cityH5892, that are nextH7138 unto the slainH2491 man, shall washH7364[H8799] their handsH3027 over the heiferH5697 that is beheadedH6202[H8803] in the valleyH5158: [6]And all the elders of that city that came near to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley:
[7]And they shall answerH6030[H8804] and sayH559[H8804], Our handsH3027 have not shedH8210[H8804] this bloodH1818, neither have our eyesH5869 seenH7200 itH8804. [7]And shall testify, and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.
[8]Be mercifulH3722[H8761], O LORDH3068, unto thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, whom thou hast redeemedH6299[H8804], and layH5414[H8799] not innocentH5355 bloodH1818 unto thy peopleH5971 of Israel'sH3478 chargeH7130. And the bloodH1818 shall be forgivenH3722 themH8694. [8]O Lord, be merciful unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay no innocent blood to the charge of thy people Israel, and the blood shall be forgiven them.
[9]So shalt thou put awayH1197[H8762] the guilt of innocentH5355 bloodH1818 from amongH7130 you, when thou shalt doH6213[H8799] that which is rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068. [9]So shalt thou take away the cry of innocent blood from thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the Lord.
[10]When thou goest forthH3318[H8799] to warH4421 against thine enemiesH341[H8802], and the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath deliveredH5414[H8804] them into thine handsH3027, and thou hast takenH7617[H8804] them captiveH7628, [10]When thou shalt go to war against thine enemies, and the Lord thy God shall deliver them into thine hands, and thou shalt take them captives,
[11]And seestH7200[H8804] among the captivesH7633 a beautifulH8389[H3303] womanH802, and hast a desireH2836[H8804] unto her, that thou wouldest have herH3947[H8804] to thy wifeH802; [11]And shalt see among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, and wouldest take her to thy wife,
[12]Then thou shalt bringH935[H8689] her homeH8432 to thine houseH1004; and she shall shaveH1548[H8765] her headH7218, and pareH6213[H8804] her nailsH6856; [12]Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails,
[13]And she shall putH5493[H8689] the raimentH8071 of her captivityH7628 from off her, and shall remainH3427[H8804] in thine houseH1004, and bewailH1058[H8804] her fatherH1 and her motherH517 a fullH3117 monthH3391: and afterH310 that thou shalt goH935[H8799] in unto her, and be her husbandH1166[H8804], and she shall be thy wifeH802. [13]And she shall put off the garment that she was taken in, and she shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a month long: and after that shalt thou go in unto her, and marry her, and she shall be thy wife.
[14]And it shall be, if thou have no delightH2654[H8804] in her, then thou shalt let her goH7971[H8765] whither she willH5315; but thou shalt not sellH4376[H8799] her at allH4376[H8800] for moneyH3701, thou shalt not make merchandiseH6014[H8691] of her, becauseH834 thou hast humbledH6031 herH8765. [14]And if thou have no favor unto her, then thou mayest let her go whither she will, but thou shalt not sell her for money, nor make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.
[15]If a manH376 have twoH8147 wivesH802, oneH259 belovedH157[H8803], and anotherH259 hatedH8130[H8803], and they have bornH3205[H8804] him childrenH1121, both the belovedH157[H8803] and the hatedH8130[H8803]; and if the firstbornH1060 sonH1121 be hers that was hatedH8146: [15]If a man have two wives, one loved and another hated, and they have born him children, both the loved and also the hated: if the firstborn be the son of the hated,
[16]Then it shall be, whenH3117 he maketh his sonsH1121 to inheritH5157[H8687] that which he hath, that he mayH3201[H8799] not make the sonH1121 of the belovedH157[H8803] firstbornH1069[H8763] beforeH6440 the sonH1121 of the hatedH8130[H8803], which is indeed the firstbornH1060: [16]Then when the time cometh, that he appointeth his sons to be heirs of that which he hath, he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is the firstborn:
[17]But he shall acknowledgeH5234[H8686] the sonH1121 of the hatedH8130[H8803] for the firstbornH1060, by givingH5414[H8800] him a doubleH8147 portionH6310 of all that he hathH4672[H8735]: for he is the beginningH7225 of his strengthH202; the rightH4941 of the firstborn is hisH1062. [17]But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, and give him double portion of all that he hath: for he is the first of his strength, and to him belongeth the right of the firstborn.
[18]If a manH376 have a stubbornH5637[H8802] and rebelliousH4784[H8802] sonH1121, which will not obeyH8085[H8802] the voiceH6963 of his fatherH1, or the voiceH6963 of his motherH517, and that, when they have chastenedH3256[H8765] him, will not hearkenH8085 unto themH8799: [18]If any man have a son that is stubborn and disobedient, which will not hearken unto the voice of his father, nor the voice of his mother, and they have chastened him, and he would not obey them,
[19]Then shall his fatherH1 and his motherH517 lay holdH8610[H8804] on him, and bring him outH3318[H8689] unto the eldersH2205 of his cityH5892, and unto the gateH8179 of his placeH4725; [19]Then shall his father and his mother take him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of the place where he dwelleth,
[20]And they shall sayH559[H8804] unto the eldersH2205 of his cityH5892, This our sonH1121 is stubbornH5637[H8802] and rebelliousH4784[H8802], he will not obeyH8085[H8802] our voiceH6963; he is a gluttonH2151[H8802], and a drunkardH5433.[H8802] [20]And shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and disobedient, and he will not obey our admonition: he is a rioter, and a drunkard.
[21]And all the menH582 of his cityH5892 shall stoneH7275[H8804] him with stonesH68, that he dieH4191[H8804]: so shalt thou putH1197 evilH7451 awayH1197[H8765] from amongH7130 you; and all IsraelH3478 shall hearH8085[H8799], and fearH3372.[H8799] [21]Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones unto death: so thou shalt take away evil from among you, that all Israel may hear it, and fear.
[22]And if a manH376 have committed a sinH2399 worthy ofH4941 deathH4194, and he be to be put to deathH4191[H8717], and thou hangH8518[H8804] him on a treeH6086: [22]If a man also have committed a trespass worthy of death, and is put to death, and thou hangest him on a tree,
[23]His bodyH5038 shall not remain all nightH3885[H8799] upon the treeH6086, but thou shalt in any wiseH6912[H8800] buryH6912[H8799] him that dayH3117; (for he that is hangedH8518[H8803] is accursedH7045 of GodH430;) that thy landH127 be not defiledH2930[H8762], which the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 givethH5414[H8802] thee for an inheritanceH5159. [23]His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt bury him the same day: for the curse of God is on him that is hanged. Defile not therefore thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee to inherit.
