[1]AfterH310 these thingsH1697, when the wrathH2534 of kingH4428 AhasuerusH325 was appeasedH7918[H8800], he rememberedH2142[H8804] VashtiH2060, and what she had doneH6213[H8804], and what was decreedH1504 against herH8738. [1]After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus [Xerxes] was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
[2]Then saidH559[H8799] the king'sH4428 servantsH5288 that ministeredH8334[H8764] unto him, Let there be fairH2896[H4758] youngH5291 virginsH1330 soughtH1245[H8762] for the kingH4428: [2]And the king's servants that ministered unto him, said, Let them seek for the king beautiful young virgins,
[3]And let the kingH4428 appointH6485[H8686] officersH6496 in all the provincesH4082 of his kingdomH4438, that they may gather togetherH6908[H8799] all the fairH2896[H4758] youngH5291 virginsH1330 unto ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002, to the houseH1004 of the womenH802, unto the custodyH3027 of HegeH1896 the king'sH4428 chamberlainH5631, keeperH8104[H8802] of the womenH802; and let their things for purificationH8562 be givenH5414 themH8800: [3]And let the king appoint officers through all the provinces of his kingdom, and let them gather all the beautiful young virgins unto the palace of Shushan, into the house of the women, under the hand of Hegai the king's eunuch, keeper of the women, to give them their things for purification.
[4]And let the maidenH5291 which pleasethH3190[H8799][H5869] the kingH4428 be queenH4427[H8799] instead of VashtiH2060. And the thingH1697 pleasedH3190[H8799][H5869] the kingH4428; and he did soH6213.[H8799] [4]And the maid that shall please the king, let her reign in the stead of Vashti. And this pleased the king, and he did so.
[5]Now in ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002 there was a certainH376 JewH3064, whose nameH8034 was MordecaiH4782, the sonH1121 of JairH2971, the sonH1121 of ShimeiH8096, the sonH1121 of KishH7027, a BenjamiteH1145; [5]In the city of Shushan, there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish a man of Benjamin,
[6]Who had been carried awayH1540[H8717] from JerusalemH3389 with the captivityH1473 which had been carried awayH1540[H8717] with JeconiahH3204 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, whom NebuchadnezzarH5019 the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 had carried awayH1540.[H8689] [6]Which had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity that was carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah (whom Nebuchad-nezzar king of Babylon had carried away)
[7]And he brought upH539[H8802] HadassahH1919, that is, EstherH635, his uncle'sH1730 daughterH1323: for she had neither fatherH1 nor motherH517, and the maidH5291 was fairH3303[H8389] and beautifulH2896[H4758]; whom MordecaiH4782, when her fatherH1 and motherH517 were deadH4194, tookH3947[H8804] for his own daughterH1323. [7]And he nourished Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair, and beautiful to look on: and after the death of her father, and her mother, Mordecai took her for his own daughter
[8]So it came to pass, when the king'sH4428 commandmentH1697 and his decreeH1881 was heardH8085[H8736], and when manyH7227 maidensH5291 were gathered togetherH6908[H8736] unto ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002, to the custodyH3027 of HegaiH1896, that EstherH635 was broughtH3947[H8735] also unto the king'sH4428 houseH1004, to the custodyH3027 of HegaiH1896, keeperH8104[H8802] of the womenH802. [8]And when the king's commandment, and his decree was published, and many maids were brought together to the palace of Shushan, under the hand of Hegai, Esther was brought also unto the king's house under the hand of Hegai the keeper of the women.
[9]And the maidenH5291 pleasedH3190[H8799][H5869] him, and she obtainedH5375[H8799] kindnessH2617 of himH6440; and he speedilyH926[H8762] gaveH5414[H8800] her her things for purificationH8562, with such things as belongedH4490 to her, and sevenH7651 maidensH5291, which were meetH7200[H8803] to be givenH5414[H8800] her, out of the king'sH4428 houseH1004: and he preferredH8138[H8762] her and her maidsH5291 unto the bestH2896 place of the houseH1004 of the womenH802. [9]And the maid pleased him, and she found favor in his sight: therefore he caused her things for purification to be given her speedily, and her state, and seven comely maids to be given her out of the king's house, and he gave change to her and to her maids of the best in the house of the women.
[10]EstherH635 had not shewedH5046[H8689] her peopleH5971 nor her kindredH4138: for MordecaiH4782 had chargedH6680[H8765] her that she should not shewH5046 itH8686. [10]But Esther showed not her people and her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her, that she should not tell it.
[11]And MordecaiH4782 walkedH1980[H8693] every dayH3117 beforeH6440 the courtH2691 of the women'sH802 houseH1004, to knowH3045[H8800] how EstherH635 didH7965, and what should becomeH6213 of herH8735. [11]And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know if Esther did well, and what should be done with her.
[12]Now when every maid'sH5291 turnH8447 was comeH5060[H8687] to go inH935[H8800] to kingH4428 AhasuerusH325, afterH7093 that she had been twelveH8147[H6240] monthsH2320, according to the mannerH1881 of the womenH802, (for so were the daysH3117 of their purificationsH4795 accomplishedH4390[H8799], to wit, sixH8337 monthsH2320 with oilH8081 of myrrhH4753, and sixH8337 monthsH2320 with sweet odoursH1314, and with other things for the purifyingH8562 of the womenH802;) [12]And when the course of every maid came, to go in to king Ahasuerus [Xerxes], after that she had been twelve months according to the manner of the women (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors and in the purifying of the women:
[13]Then thus cameH935[H8802] every maidenH5291 unto the kingH4428; whatsoever she desiredH559[H8799] was givenH5414[H8735] her to goH935[H8800] with her out of the houseH1004 of the womenH802 unto the king'sH4428 houseH1004. [13]And thus went the maids unto the king) whatsoever she required, was given her, to go with her out of the women's house unto the king's house.
[14]In the eveningH6153 she wentH935[H8802], and on the morrowH1242 she returnedH7725[H8802] into the secondH8145 houseH1004 of the womenH802, to the custodyH3027 of ShaashgazH8190, the king'sH4428 chamberlainH5631, which keptH8104[H8802] the concubinesH6370: she came inH935[H8799] unto the kingH4428 no more, except the kingH4428 delightedH2654[H8804] in her, and that she were calledH7121[H8738] by nameH8034. [14]In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women under the hand of Shaashgaz the king's eunuch, which kept the concubines: she came in to the king no more, except she pleased the king, and that she were called by name.
[15]Now when the turnH8447 of EstherH635, the daughterH1323 of AbihailH32 the uncleH1730 of MordecaiH4782, who had takenH3947[H8804] her for his daughterH1323, was comeH5060[H8687] to go inH935[H8800] unto the kingH4428, she requiredH1245[H8765] nothingH1697 but what HegaiH1896 the king'sH4428 chamberlainH5631, the keeperH8104[H8802] of the womenH802, appointedH559[H8799]. And EstherH635 obtainedH5375[H8802] favourH2580 in the sightH5869 of all them that lookedH7200 upon herH8802. [15]Now when the course of Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai (which had taken her as his own daughter) came, that she should go in to the king, she desired nothing, but what Hegai the king's eunuch the keeper of the women said: and Esther found favor in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
[16]So EstherH635 was takenH3947[H8735] unto kingH4428 AhasuerusH325 into his houseH1004 royalH4438 in the tenthH6224 monthH2320, which is the monthH2320 TebethH2887, in the seventhH7651 yearH8141 of his reignH4438. [16]So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus [Xerxes] into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
[17]And the kingH4428 lovedH157[H8799] EstherH635 above all the womenH802, and she obtainedH5375[H8799] graceH2580 and favourH2617 in his sightH6440 more than all the virginsH1330; so that he setH7760[H8799] the royalH4438 crownH3804 upon her headH7218, and made her queenH4427[H8686] instead of VashtiH2060. [17]And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she found grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins: so that he set the crown of the kingdom upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
[18]Then the kingH4428 madeH6213[H8799] a greatH1419 feastH4960 unto all his princesH8269 and his servantsH5650, even Esther'sH635 feastH4960; and he madeH6213[H8804] a releaseH2010 to the provincesH4082, and gaveH5414[H8799] giftsH4864, according to the stateH3027 of the kingH4428. [18]Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes, and his servants, which was the feast of Esther, and gave rest unto the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the power of a king.
[19]And when the virginsH1330 were gathered togetherH6908[H8736] the second timeH8145, then MordecaiH4782 satH3427[H8802] in the king'sH4428 gateH8179. [19]And when the virgins were gathered the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
[20]EstherH635 had not yet shewedH5046[H8688] her kindredH4138 nor her peopleH5971; as MordecaiH4782 had chargedH6680[H8765] her: for EstherH635 didH6213[H8802] the commandmentH3982 of MordecaiH4782, like as when she was brought up with himH545. [20]Esther had not yet showed her kindred nor her people, as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did after the word of Mordecai, as when she was nourished with him.
[21]In those daysH3117, while MordecaiH4782 satH3427[H8802] in the king'sH4428 gateH8179, twoH8147 of the king'sH4428 chamberlainsH5631, BigthanH904 and TereshH8657, of those which keptH8104[H8802] the doorH5592, were wrothH7107[H8804], and soughtH1245[H8762] to layH7971[H8800] handH3027 on the kingH4428 AhasuerusH325. [21]In those days when Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus [Xerxes].
[22]And the thingH1697 was knownH3045[H8735] to MordecaiH4782, who toldH5046[H8686] it unto EstherH635 the queenH4436; and EstherH635 certifiedH559[H8799] the kingH4428 thereof in Mordecai'sH4782 nameH8034. [22]And the thing was known to Mordecai, and he told it unto queen Esther, and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name:
[23]And when inquisitionH1245[H8792] was made of the matterH1697, it was found outH4672[H8735]; therefore they were bothH8147 hangedH8518[H8735] on a treeH6086: and it was writtenH3789[H8735] in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697[H3117] beforeH6440 the kingH4428. [23]And when inquisition was made, it was found so: therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
