[1]Now in the twelfthH8147[H6240] monthH2320, that is, the monthH2320 AdarH143, on the thirteenthH7969[H6240] dayH3117 of the same, when the king'sH4428 commandmentH1697 and his decreeH1881 drew nearH5060[H8689] to be put in executionH6213[H8736], in the dayH3117 that the enemiesH341[H8802] of the JewsH3064 hopedH7663[H8765] to have powerH7980[H8800] over them, (though it was turnedH2015[H8736] to the contrary, that the JewsH3064 had ruleH7980[H8799] over them that hatedH8130 themH8802;) [1]So in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, upon the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them (but it turned contrary: for the Jews had rule over them that hated them)
[2]The JewsH3064 gathered themselves togetherH6950[H8738] in their citiesH5892 throughout all the provincesH4082 of the kingH4428 AhasuerusH325, to layH7971[H8800] handH3027 on such as soughtH1245[H8764] their hurtH7451: and no manH376 could withstandH5975[H8804] themH6440; for the fearH6343 of them fellH5307[H8804] upon all peopleH5971. [2]The Jews gathered themselves together into their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus [Xerxes], to lay hand on such as sought their hurt, and no man could withstand them: for the fear of them fell upon all people.
[3]And all the rulersH8269 of the provincesH4082, and the lieutenantsH323, and the deputiesH6346, and officersH6213[H8802][H4399] of the kingH4428, helpedH5375[H8764] the JewsH3064; because the fearH6343 of MordecaiH4782 fellH5307 upon themH8804. [3]And all the rulers of the provinces, and the princes and the captains, and the officers of the king exalted the Jews: for the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
[4]For MordecaiH4782 was greatH1419 in the king'sH4428 houseH1004, and his fameH8089 went outH1980[H8802] throughout all the provincesH4082: for this manH376 MordecaiH4782 waxedH1980[H8802] greater and greaterH1419. [4]For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and the report of him went through all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
[5]Thus the JewsH3064 smoteH5221[H8686] all their enemiesH341[H8802] with the strokeH4347 of the swordH2719, and slaughterH2027, and destructionH12, and didH6213[H8799] what they wouldH7522 unto those that hatedH8130 themH8802. [5]Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with strokes of the sword and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.
[6]And in ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002 the JewsH3064 slewH2026[H8804] and destroyedH6[H8763] fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376. [6]And at Shushan the palace slew the Jews and destroyed five hundred men,
[7]And ParshandathaH6577, and DalphonH1813, and AspathaH630, [7]And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
[8]And PorathaH6334, and AdaliaH118, and AridathaH743, [8]And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
[9]And ParmashtaH6534, and ArisaiH747, and AridaiH742, and VajezathaH2055, [9]And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
[10]The tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of HammedathaH4099, the enemyH6887[H8802] of the JewsH3064, slewH2026[H8804] they; but on the spoilH961 laidH7971[H8804] they not their handH3027. [10]The ten sons of Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the adversary of the Jews slew they: but they laid not their hands on the spoil.
[11]On that dayH3117 the numberH4557 of those that were slainH2026[H8803] in ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002 was broughtH935[H8804] beforeH6440 the kingH4428. [11]On the same day came the number of those that were slain, unto the palace of Shushan before the king.
[12]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto EstherH635 the queenH4436, The JewsH3064 have slainH2026[H8804] and destroyedH6[H8763] fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376 in ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002, and the tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001; what have they doneH6213[H8804] in the restH7605 of the king'sH4428 provincesH4082? now what is thy petitionH7596? and it shall be grantedH5414[H8735] thee: or what is thy requestH1246 furtherH5750? and it shall be doneH6213.[H8735] [12]And the king said unto the queen Esther, The Jews have slain in Shushan the palace and destroyed five hundred men, and the ten sons of Haman: what have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? And what is thy petition, that it may be given thee? Or what is thy request moreover, that it may be performed?
[13]Then saidH559[H8799] EstherH635, If it pleaseH2896 the kingH4428, let it be grantedH5414[H8735] to the JewsH3064 which are in ShushanH7800 to doH6213[H8800] to morrowH4279 also according unto this day'sH3117 decreeH1881, and let Haman'sH2001 tenH6235 sonsH1121 be hangedH8518[H8799] upon the gallowsH6086. [13]Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted also tomorrow to the Jews that are in Shushan, to do according unto this day's decree, that they may hang upon the tree Haman's ten sons.
[14]And the kingH4428 commandedH559[H8799] it so to be doneH6213[H8736]: and the decreeH1881 was givenH5414[H8735] at ShushanH7800; and they hangedH8518[H8804] Haman'sH2001 tenH6235 sonsH1121. [14]And the king charged to do so, and the decree was given at Shushan, and they hanged Haman's ten sons.
[15]For the JewsH3064 that were in ShushanH7800 gathered themselves togetherH6950[H8735] on the fourteenthH702[H6240] dayH3117 also of the monthH2320 AdarH143, and slewH2026[H8799] threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 at ShushanH7800; but on the preyH961 they laidH7971[H8804] not their handH3027. [15]So the Jews that were in Shushan, assembled themselves upon the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men in Shushan, but on the spoil they laid not their hand.
[16]But the otherH7605 JewsH3064 that were in the king'sH4428 provincesH4082 gathered themselves togetherH6950[H8738], and stoodH5975[H8800] for their livesH5315, and had restH5118 from their enemiesH341[H8802], and slewH2026[H8800] of their foesH8130[H8802] seventyH7657 and fiveH2568 thousandH505, but they laidH7971[H8804] not their handsH3027 on the preyH961, [16]And the rest of the Jews that were in the king's provinces assembled themselves, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of them that hated them, seventy and five thousand: but they laid not their hand on the spoil.
[17]On the thirteenthH7969[H6240] dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143; and on the fourteenthH702[H6240] day of the same restedH5118 they, and madeH6213[H8800] it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and gladnessH8057. [17]This they did on the thirteenth day of the month Adar, and rested the fourteenth day thereof, and kept it a day of feasting and joy.
[18]But the JewsH3064 that were at ShushanH7800 assembled togetherH6950[H8738] on the thirteenthH7969[H6240] day thereof, and on the fourteenthH702[H6240] thereof; and on the fifteenthH2568[H6240] day of the same they restedH5118, and madeH6213[H8800] it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and gladnessH8057. [18]But the Jews that were in Shushan assembled themselves on the thirteenth day, and on the fourteenth thereof, and they rested on the fifteenth of the same, and kept it a day of feasting and joy.
[19]Therefore the JewsH3064 of the villagesH6521, that dweltH3427[H8802] in the unwalledH6519 townsH5892, madeH6213[H8802] the fourteenthH702[H6240] dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143 a day of gladnessH8057 and feastingH4960, and a goodH2896 dayH3117, and of sendingH4916 portionsH4490 oneH376 to anotherH7453. [19]Therefore the Jews of the villages that dwelt in the unwalled towns, kept the fourteenth day of the month Adar with joy and feasting, even a joyful day, and every one sent presents unto his neighbor.
[20]And MordecaiH4782 wroteH3789[H8799] these thingsH1697, and sentH7971[H8799] lettersH5612 unto all the JewsH3064 that were in all the provincesH4082 of the kingH4428 AhasuerusH325, both nighH7138 and farH7350, [20]And Mordecai wrote these words, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were through all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus [Xerxes], both near and far,
[21]To stablishH6965[H8763] this among them, that they should keepH6213[H8802] the fourteenthH702[H6240] dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143, and the fifteenthH2568[H6240] dayH3117 H8141of the same, yearlyH8141 [21]Enjoining them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, every year.
[22]As the daysH3117 wherein the JewsH3064 restedH5117[H8804] from their enemiesH341[H8802], and the monthH2320 which was turnedH2015[H8738] unto them from sorrowH3015 to joyH8057, and from mourningH60 into a goodH2896 dayH3117: that they should makeH6213[H8800] them daysH3117 of feastingH4960 and joyH8057, and of sendingH4916 portionsH4490 oneH376 to anotherH7453, and giftsH4979 to the poorH34. [22]According to the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a joyful day, to keep them the days of feasting, and joy, and to send presents every man to his neighbor, and gifts to the poor.
[23]And the JewsH3064 undertookH6901[H8765] to doH6213[H8800] as they had begunH2490[H8689], and as MordecaiH4782 had writtenH3789 unto themH8804; [23]And the Jews promised to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them,
[24]Because HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of HammedathaH4099, the AgagiteH91, the enemyH6887[H8802] of all the JewsH3064, had devisedH2803[H8804] against the JewsH3064 to destroyH6[H8763] them, and had castH5307[H8689] PurH6332, that is, the lotH1486, to consumeH2000[H8800] them, and to destroyH6 themH8763; [24]Because Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite all the Jews' adversary, had imagined against the Jews, to destroy them, and had cast Pur (that is a lot) to consume and destroy them.
[25]But when Esther cameH935[H8800] beforeH6440 the kingH4428, he commandedH559[H8804] by lettersH5612 that his wickedH7451 deviceH4284, which he devisedH2803[H8804] against the JewsH3064, should returnH7725[H8799] upon his own headH7218, and that he and his sonsH1121 should be hangedH8518[H8804] on the gallowsH6086. [25]And when she came before the king, he commanded by letters, Let this wicked device (which he imagined against the Jews) turn upon his own head, and let them hang him and his sons on the tree.
[26]Wherefore they calledH7121[H8804] these daysH3117 PurimH6332 after the nameH8034 of PurH6332. Therefore for all the wordsH1697 of this letterH107, and of that which they had seenH7200[H8804] concerning this matterH3602, and which had comeH5060 unto themH8689, [26]Therefore they called these days Purim, by the name of Pur, and because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen besides this, and of that which had come unto them.
[27]The JewsH3064 ordainedH6965[H8765], and tookH6901[H8765] upon them, and upon their seedH2233, and upon all such as joinedH3867[H8737] themselves unto them, so as it should not failH5674[H8799], that they would keepH6213[H8802] these twoH8147 daysH3117 according to their writingH3791, and according to their appointed timeH2165 H8141every yearH8141 [27]The Jews also ordained, and promised for them and for their seed, and for all that joined unto them, that they would not fail to observe those two days every year, according to their writing, and according to their season,
[28]And that these daysH3117 should be rememberedH2142[H8737] and keptH6213[H8737] throughoutH1755 every generationH1755, every familyH4940, every provinceH4082, and every cityH5892; and that these daysH3117 of PurimH6332 should not failH5674[H8799] from amongH8432 the JewsH3064, nor the memorialH2143 of them perishH5486[H8799] from their seedH2233. [28]And that these days should be remembered, and kept throughout every generation and every family, and every province, and every city: even these days of Purim should not fail among the Jews, and the memorial of them should not perish from their seed.
[29]Then EstherH635 the queenH4436, the daughterH1323 of AbihailH32, and MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064, wroteH3789[H8799] with all authorityH8633, to confirmH6965[H8763] this secondH8145 letterH107 of PurimH6332. [29]And the queen Esther the daughter of Abihail and Mordecai the Jew wrote with all authority (to confirm this letter of Purim the second time)
[30]And he sentH7971[H8799] the lettersH5612 unto all the JewsH3064, to the hundredH3967 twentyH6242 and sevenH7651 provincesH4082 of the kingdomH4438 of AhasuerusH325, with wordsH1697 of peaceH7965 and truthH571, [30]And he sent letters unto all the Jews to the hundred and seven and twenty provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus [Xerxes], with words of peace and truth,
[31]To confirmH6965[H8763] these daysH3117 of PurimH6332 in their timesH2165 appointed, according as MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064 and EstherH635 the queenH4436 had enjoinedH6965[H8765] them, and as they had decreedH6965[H8765] for themselvesH5315 and for their seedH2233, the mattersH1697 of the fastingsH6685 and their cryH2201. [31]To confirm these days of Purim, according to their seasons, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had appointed them, and as they had promised for themselves and for their seed with fasting and prayer.
[32]And the decreeH3982 of EstherH635 confirmedH6965[H8765] these mattersH1697 of PurimH6332; and it was writtenH3789[H8737] in the bookH5612. [32]And the decree of Esther confirmed these words of Purim, and was written in the book.
