[1]Forsothe Isaac wexe eld, and hise iyen dasewiden, and he miyte not se. And he clepide Esau, his more sone, and seide to hym, My sone! Which answerde, Y am present. [1]And it came to passH1961 , H8799that when IsaacH3327 was oldH2204 , H8804and his eyesH5869 were dimH3543 , H8799so that he could not seeH7200 , H8800he calledH7121 H8799EsauH6215 his eldestH1419 sonH1121, and saidH559 H8799unto him, My sonH1121: and he saidH559 unto him, Behold, here am IH8799.
[2]To whom the fadir seide, Thou seest that Y haue woxun eld, and Y knowe not the dai of my deeth. [2]And he saidH559 , H8799Behold now, I am oldH2204 , H8804I knowH3045 H8804not the dayH3117 of my deathH4194:
[3]Take thin armeres, `arewe caas, and a bowe, and go out; and whanne thou hast take ony thing bi huntyng, [3]Now therefore takeH5375 , H8798I pray thee, thy weaponsH3627, thy quiverH8522 and thy bowH7198, and go outH3318 H8798to the fieldH7704, and takeH6679 H8798me some venisonH6718;[H8675][H6720]
[4]make to me a seew therof, as thou knowist that Y wole, and brynge that Y ete, and my soule blesse thee bifore that Y die. [4]And makeH6213 H8798me savoury meatH4303, such asH834 I loveH157 , H8804and bringH935 H8685it to me, that I may eatH398 ; H8799that my soulH5315 may blessH1288 H8762thee beforeH2962 I dieH4191.[H8799]
[5]And whanne Rebecca hadde herd this thing, and he hadde go in to the feeld to fille the comaundment of the fadir, [5]And RebekahH7259 heardH8085 H8802when IsaacH3327 spakeH1696 H8763to EsauH6215 his sonH1121. And EsauH6215 wentH3212 H8799to the fieldH7704 to huntH6679 H8800for venisonH6718, and to bringH935 itH8687.
[6]sche seide to hir sone Jacob, Y herde thi fadir spekynge with Esau, thi brothir, and seiynge to him, Brynge thou me of thin huntyng, [6]And RebekahH7259 spakeH559 H8804unto JacobH3290 her sonH1121, sayingH559 , H8800Behold, I heardH8085 H8804thy fatherH1 speakH1696 H8764unto EsauH6215 thy brotherH251, sayingH559,[H8800]
[7]and make thow metis, that Y ete, and that Y blesse thee bifor the Lord bifor that Y die. [7]BringH935 H8685me venisonH6718, and makeH6213 H8798me savoury meatH4303, that I may eatH398 , H8799and blessH1288 H8762thee beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 beforeH6440 my deathH4194.
[8]Now therfor, my sone, assent to my counsels, [8]Now therefore, my sonH1121, obeyH8085 H8798my voiceH6963 according to that whichH834 I commandH6680 theeH8764.
[9]and go to the floc, and brynge to me tweyne the beste kidis, that Y make metis of tho to thi fadir, whiche he etith gladli; [9]GoH3212 H8798now to the flockH6629, and fetchH3947 H8798me from thence twoH8147 goodH2896 kidsH1423 of the goatsH5795; and I will makeH6213 H8799them savoury meatH4303 for thy fatherH1, such as he lovethH157:[H8804]
[10]and that whanne thow hast brouyt in tho metis, and he hath ete, he blesse thee bifore that he die. [10]And thou shalt bringH935 H8689it to thy fatherH1, that he may eatH398 , H8804and thatH834 he may blessH1288 H8762thee beforeH6440 his deathH4194.
[11]To whom Jacob answerde, Thou knowist that Esau my brother is an heeri man, and Y am smethe; if my fadir `touchith and feelith me, [11]And JacobH3290 saidH559 H8799to RebekahH7259 his motherH517, Behold, EsauH6215 my brotherH251 is a hairyH8163 manH376, and I am a smoothH2509 manH376:
[12]Y drede lest he gesse that Y wolde scorne him, and lest he brynge in cursyng on me for blessyng. [12]My fatherH1 peradventure will feelH4959 H8799me, and I shall seemH5869 to him as a deceiverH8591 ; H8772and I shall bringH935 H8689a curseH7045 upon me, and not a blessingH1293.
[13]To whom the modir seide, My sone, this cursyng be in me; oonly here thou my vois, and go, and brynge that that Y seide. [13]And his motherH517 saidH559 H8799unto him, Upon me be thy curseH7045, my sonH1121: only obeyH8085 H8798my voiceH6963, and goH3212 H8798fetchH3947 me themH8798.
[14]He yede, and brouyte, and yaf to his modir. Sche made redi metis, as sche knewe that his fadir wolde, [14]And he wentH3212 , H8799and fetchedH3947 , H8799and broughtH935 H8686them to his motherH517: and his motherH517 madeH6213 H8799savoury meatH4303, such as his fatherH1 lovedH157.[H8804]
[15]and sche clothide Jacob in ful goode clothis of Esau, whiche sche hadde at home anentis hir silf. [15]And RebekahH7259 tookH3947 H8799goodlyH2532 raimentH899 of her eldestH1419 sonH1121 EsauH6215, which were with her in the houseH1004, and put them uponH3847 H8686JacobH3290 her youngerH6996 sonH1121:
[16]And sche `compasside the hondis with litle skynnys of kiddis, and kyuerede the `nakide thingis of the necke; [16]And she putH3847 H8689the skinsH5785 of the kidsH1423 of the goatsH5795 upon his handsH3027, and upon the smoothH2513 of his neckH6677:
[17]and sche yaf seew, and bitook the loouys whiche sche hadde bake. [17]And she gaveH5414 H8799the savoury meatH4303 and the breadH3899, which she had preparedH6213 , H8804into the handH3027 of her sonH1121 JacobH3290.
[18]And whanne these weren brouyt in, he seide, My fadir! And he answerde, Y here; who art thou, my sone? [18]And he cameH935 H8799unto his fatherH1, and saidH559 , H8799My fatherH1: and he saidH559 , H8799Here am I; who art thou, my sonH1121?
[19]And Jacob seide, Y am Esau, thi first gendrid sone. Y haue do to thee as thou comaundist to me; rise thou, sitte, and ete of myn huntyng, that thi soule blesse me. [19]And JacobH3290 saidH559 H8799unto his fatherH1, I am EsauH6215 thy firstbornH1060; I have doneH6213 H8804according as thou badestH1696 H8765me: ariseH6965 , H8798I pray thee, sitH3427 H8798and eatH398 H8798of my venisonH6718, that thy soulH5315 may blessH1288 meH8762.
[20]Eft Ysaac seide to his sone, My sone, hou miytist thou fynde so soone? Which answerde, It was Goddis wille, that this that Y wolde schulde come soone to me. [20]And IsaacH3327 saidH559 H8799unto his sonH1121, How is it that thou hast foundH4672 H8800it so quicklyH4116 , H8765my sonH1121? And he saidH559 , H8799Because the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 broughtH7136 H8689it to meH6440.
[21]And Isaac seide, My sone, come thou hidir, that Y touche thee, and that Y preue wher thou art my sone Esau, ethir nay. [21]And IsaacH3327 saidH559 H8799unto JacobH3290, Come nearH5066 , H8798I pray thee, that I may feelH4184 H8799thee, my sonH1121, whether thou be my veryH2088 sonH1121 Esau or notH6215.
[22]He neiyede to the fadir; and whanne he hadde feelid hym, Isaac seide, Sotheli the vois is the vois of Jacob, but the hondis ben the hondis of Esau. [22]And JacobH3290 went nearH5066 H8799unto IsaacH3327 his fatherH1; and he feltH4959 H8799him, and saidH559 , H8799The voiceH6963 is Jacob'sH3290 voiceH6963, but the handsH3027 are the handsH3027 of EsauH6215.
[23]And Isaac knew not Jacob, for the heery hondis expressiden the licnesse of the more sone. [23]And he discernedH5234 H8689him not, because his handsH3027 were hairyH8163, as his brotherH251 Esau'sH6215 handsH3027: so he blessedH1288 himH8762.
[24]Therfor Isaac blesside him, and seide, Art thou my sone Esau? Jacob answerde, Y am. [24]And he saidH559 , H8799Art thou my very sonH1121 EsauH6215? And he saidH559, I amH8799.
[25]And Isaac seide, My sone, brynge thou to me metis of thin huntyng, that my soule blesse thee. And whanne Isaac hadde ete these metis brouyt, Jacob brouyte also wyn to Isaac, and whanne this was drunkun, [25]And he saidH559 , H8799Bring it nearH5066 H8685to me, and I will eatH398 H8799of my son'sH1121 venisonH6718, that my soulH5315 may blessH1288 H8762thee. And he brought it nearH5066 H8686to him, and he did eatH398 : H8799and he broughtH935 H8686him wineH3196, and he drankH8354.[H8799]
[26]Isaac seide to him, My sone, come thou hidir, and yyue to me a cos. [26]And his fatherH1 IsaacH3327 saidH559 H8799unto him, Come nearH5066 H8798now, and kissH5401 H8798me, my sonH1121.
[27]Jacob neiyede, and kisside hym; and anoon as Isaac feelide the odour of hise clothis, he blesside him, and seide, Lo! the odour of my sone as the odour of a `feeld ful which the Lord hath blessid. [27]And he came nearH5066 , H8799and kissedH5401 H8799him: and he smelledH7306 H8686the smellH7381 of his raimentH899, and blessedH1288 H8762him, and saidH559 , H8799SeeH7200 , H8798the smellH7381 of my sonH1121 is as the smellH7381 of a fieldH7704 which the LORDH3068 hath blessedH1288:[H8765]
[28]God yyue to thee of the dewe of heuene, and of the fatnesse of erthe, aboundaunce of whete, and of wyn, and of oile; [28]Therefore GodH430 giveH5414 H8799thee of the dewH2919 of heavenH8064, and the fatnessH4924 of the earthH776, and plentyH7230 of cornH1715 and wineH8492:
[29]and puplis serue thee, and lynagis worschipe thee; be thou lord of thi britheren, and the sones of thi modir be bowid bifor thee; be he cursid that cursith thee, and he that blessith thee, be fillid with blessyngis. [29]Let peopleH5971 serveH5647 H8799thee, and nationsH3816 bow downH7812 H8691to thee: beH1933 H8798lordH1376 over thy brethrenH251, and let thy mother'sH517 sonsH1121 bow downH7812 H8691to thee: cursedH779 H8803be every one that cursethH779 H8802thee, and blessedH1288 H8803be he that blessethH1288 theeH8764.
[30]Vnnethis Isaac hadde fillid the word, and whanne Jacob was gon out, [30]And it came to pass, as soon as IsaacH3327 had made an endH3615 H8765of blessingH1288 H8763JacobH3290, and JacobH3290 was yetH389 scarceH3318 H8800gone outH3318 H8804from the presenceH6440 of IsaacH3327 his fatherH1, that EsauH6215 his brotherH251 came inH935 H8804from his huntingH6718.
[31]Esau cam, and brouyte in metis sodun of the huntyng to the fadir, and seide, My fadir, rise thou, and ete of the huntyng of thi sone, that thi soule blesse me. [31]And he also had madeH6213 H8799savoury meatH4303, and brought itH935 H8686unto his fatherH1, and saidH559 H8799unto his fatherH1, Let my fatherH1 ariseH6965 , H8799and eatH398 H8799of his son'sH1121 venisonH6718, that thy soulH5315 may blessH1288 meH8762.
[32]And Isaac seide, Who forsothe art thou? Which answerde, Y am Esau, thi firste gendrid sone. [32]And IsaacH3327 his fatherH1 saidH559 H8799unto him, Who art thou? And he saidH559 , H8799I am thy sonH1121, thy firstbornH1060 EsauH6215.
[33]Isaac dredde bi a greet astonying; and he wondride more, than it mai be bileued, and seide, Who therfor is he which a while ago brouyte to me huntyng takun, and Y eet of alle thingis bifor that thou camest; and Y blesside him? and he schal be blessid. [33]And IsaacH3327 trembledH2729 H8799veryH1419 exceedinglyH3966 , H2731and saidH559 , H8799Who? whereH645 is he that hath takenH6679 H8801venisonH6718, and broughtH935 H8686it me, and I have eatenH398 H8799of all before thou camestH935 , H8799and have blessedH1288 H8762him? yea, and he shall be blessedH1288.[H8803]
[34]Whanne the wordis of the fadir weren herd, Esau rorid with a greet cry, and was astonyed, and seide, My fadir, blesse thou also me. [34]And when EsauH6215 heardH8085 H8800the wordsH1697 of his fatherH1, he criedH6817 H8799with a greatH1419 and exceedingH3966 bitterH4751 cryH6818, and saidH559 H8799unto his fatherH1, BlessH1288 H8761me, even me also, O my fatherH1.
[35]Which seide, Thy brother cam prudentli, and took thi blessyng. [35]And he saidH559 , H8799Thy brotherH251 cameH935 H8804with subtiltyH4820, and hath taken awayH3947 H8799thy blessingH1293.
[36]And Esau addide, Justli his name is clepid Jacob, for lo! he supplauntide me another tyme; bifor he took awei `my firste gendride thingis, and now the secounde tyme he rauyschide priueli my blessyng. And eft he seide to the fadir, Wher thou hast not reserued a blessyng also to me? [36]And he saidH559 , H8799Is not he rightlyH3588 namedH7121[H8804] H8034JacobH3290? for he hath supplanted meH6117 H8799theseH2088 two timesH6471: he took awayH3947 H8804my birthrightH1062; and, behold, now he hath taken awayH3947 H8804my blessingH1293. And he saidH559 , H8799Hast thou not reservedH680 H8804a blessing for meH1293?
[37]Ysaac answeride, Y haue maad him thi lord, and Y haue maad suget alle hise britheren to his seruage; Y haue stablischid him in whete, and wyn, and oile; and, my sone, what schal Y do to thee aftir these thingis? [37]And IsaacH3327 answeredH6030 H8799and saidH559 H8799unto EsauH6215, Behold, I have madeH7760 H8804him thy lordH1376, and all his brethrenH251 have I givenH5414 H8804to him for servantsH5650; and with cornH1715 and wineH8492 have I sustainedH5564 H8804him: and what shall I doH6213 H8799nowH645 unto thee, my sonH1121?
[38]To whom Esau saide, Fadir, wher thou hast oneli o blessyng? Y biseche that also thou blesse me. And whanne Esau wepte with greet yellyng, [38]And EsauH6215 saidH559 H8799unto his fatherH1, Hast thou but oneH259 blessingH1293, my fatherH1? blessH1288 H8761me, even me also, O my fatherH1. And EsauH6215 lifted upH5375 H8799his voiceH6963, and weptH1058.[H8799]
[39]Isaac was stirid, and seide to hym, Thi blessyng schal be in the fatnesse of erthe, and in the dew of heuene fro aboue; [39]And IsaacH3327 his fatherH1 answeredH6030 H8799and saidH559 H8799unto him, Behold, thy dwellingH4186 shall be the fatnessH4924 of the earthH776, and of the dewH2919 of heavenH8064 from aboveH5920;
[40]thou schalt lyue bi swerd, and thou schalt serue thi brothir, and tyme schal come whanne thou schalt shake awei, and vnbynde his yok fro thi nollis. [40]And by thy swordH2719 shalt thou liveH2421 , H8799and shalt serveH5647 H8799thy brotherH251; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominionH7300 , H8686that thou shalt breakH6561 H8804his yokeH5923 from off thy neckH6677.
[41]Therfor Esau hatide euer Jacob for the blessyng bi which the fadir hadde blessid hym; and Esau seide in his herte, The daies of morenyng of my fadir schulen come, and Y schal sle Jacob, my brothir. [41]And EsauH6215 hatedH7852 H8799JacobH3290 becauseH5921 of the blessingH1293 wherewithH834 his fatherH1 blessed himH1288 : H8765and EsauH6215 saidH559 H8799in his heartH3820, The daysH3117 of mourningH60 for my fatherH1 are at handH7126 ; H8799then will I slayH2026 H8799my brotherH251 JacobH3290.
[42]These thingis weren teld to Rebecca, and sche sente, and clepide hir sone Jacob, and seide to hym, Lo! Esau, thi brothir, manaasith to sle thee; [42]And these wordsH1697 of EsauH6215 her elderH1419 sonH1121 were toldH5046 H8714to RebekahH7259: and she sentH7971 H8799and calledH7121 H8799JacobH3290 her youngerH6996 sonH1121, and saidH559 H8799unto him, Behold, thy brotherH251 EsauH6215, as touching thee, doth comfortH5162 H8693himself, purposing to killH2026 theeH8800.
[43]now therfor, my sone, here thou my vois, and rise thou, and fle to Laban, my brother, in Aran; [43]Now therefore, my sonH1121, obeyH8085 H8798my voiceH6963; and ariseH6965 , H8798fleeH1272 H8798thou to LabanH3837 my brotherH251 to HaranH2771;
[44]and thou schalt dwelle with hym a fewe daies, til the woodnesse of thi brother reste, [44]And tarryH3427 H8804with him a fewH259 daysH3117, untilH834 thy brother'sH251 furyH2534 turn awayH7725;[H8799]
[45]and his indignacioun ceesse, and til he foryite tho thingis whiche thou hast don ayens hym. Aftirward Y schal sende, and Y schal brynge thee fro thennus hidir. Whi schal Y be maad soneles of euer eithir sone in o dai? [45]Until thy brother'sH251 angerH639 turn awayH7725 H8800from thee, and he forgetH7911 H8804that which thou hast doneH6213 H8804to him: then I will sendH7971 , H8804and fetchH3947 H8804thee from thence: whyH4100 should I be deprivedH7921 H8799also of you bothH8147 in oneH259 dayH3117?
[46]And Rebecca seide to Isaac, It anoieth me of my lijf for the douytris of Heth; if Jacob takith a wijf of the kynrede of this lond, Y nyle lyue. [46]And RebekahH7259 saidH559 H8799to IsaacH3327, I am wearyH6973 H8804of my lifeH2416 becauseH6440 of the daughtersH1323 of HethH2845: if JacobH3290 takeH3947 H8802a wifeH802 of the daughtersH1323 of HethH2845, such as these which are of the daughtersH1323 of the landH776, what goodH4100 shall my life do meH2416?
