[1]And DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of LeahH3812, which she bareH3205 H8804unto JacobH3290, went outH3318 H8799to seeH7200 H8800the daughtersH1323 of the landH776. [1]AND Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the native girls.
[2]And when ShechemH7927 the sonH1121 of HamorH2544 the HiviteH2340, princeH5387 of the countryH776, sawH7200 H8799her, he tookH3947 H8799her, and layH7901 H8799with her, and defiled herH6031.[H8762] [2]And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and defiled her.
[3]And his soulH5315 claveH1692 H8799unto DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of JacobH3290, and he lovedH157 H8799the damselH5291, and spakeH1696 H8762kindlyH3820 unto the damselH5291. [3]And his soul longed for Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl, and spoke kindly to the girl, and won her heart.
[4]And ShechemH7927 spakeH559 H8799unto his fatherH1 HamorH2544, sayingH559 , H8800GetH3947 H8798me this damselH3207 to wifeH802. [4]And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Get me this girl to wife.
[5]And JacobH3290 heardH8085 H8804that he had defiledH2930 H8765DinahH1783 his daughterH1323: now his sonsH1121 were with his cattleH4735 in the fieldH7704: and JacobH3290 held his peaceH2790 H8689until they were comeH935.[H8800] [5]And Jacob heard that Dinah his daughter had been defiled; now his sons were with the cattle in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came
[6]And HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 went outH3318 H8799unto JacobH3290 to communeH1696 H8763with himH854. [6]And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
[7]And the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 H8804out of the fieldH7704 when they heardH8085 H8800it: and the menH582 were grievedH6087 , H8691and they were veryH3966 wrothH2734 , H8799because he had wroughtH6213 H8804follyH5039 in IsraelH3478 in lyingH7901 H8800with Jacob'sH3290 daughterH1323; which thing ought not to be doneH6213.[H8735] [7]And the sons of Jacob came from the field, and when they heard the news, they were grieved; and they were very indignant, because they had wrought folly in Israel in the disgracing of Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done.
[8]And HamorH2544 communedH1696 H8762with them, sayingH559 , H8800The soulH5315 of my sonH1121 ShechemH7927 longethH2836 H8804for your daughterH1323: I pray you giveH5414 H8798her him to wifeH802. [8]And Hamor spoke with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; give her to him in marriage.
[9]And make ye marriagesH2859 H8690with us, and giveH5414 H8799your daughtersH1323 unto us, and takeH3947 H8799our daughters unto youH1323. [9]Intermarry with us, and give your daughters to us in marriage, and take our daughters to you,
[10]And ye shall dwellH3427 H8799with us: and the landH776 shall beH1961 H8799before youH6440; dwellH3427 H8798and tradeH5503 H8804ye therein, and get you possessionsH270 thereinH8734. [10]And dwell with us; behold, the land is before you; dwell and trade in it and inherit in it.
[11]And ShechemH7927 saidH559 H8799unto her fatherH1 and unto her brethrenH251, Let me findH4672 H8799graceH2580 in your eyesH5869, and what ye shall sayH559 H8799unto me I will giveH5414.[H8799] [11]And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, Let me find mercy in your presence, and whatever you shall ask of me I will give.
[12]AskH7235 H8685me never so muchH3966 dowryH4119 and giftH4976, and I will giveH5414 H8799according as ye shall sayH559 H8799unto me: but giveH5414 H8798me the damselH5291 to wifeH802. [12]Ask me as much as you wish, both dowry and gifts, and I will give you according as you shall say to me; but give me this girl to wife.
[13]And the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 answeredH6030 H8799ShechemH7927 and HamorH2544 his fatherH1 deceitfullyH4820, and saidH1696 , H8762because he had defiledH2930 H8765DinahH1783 their sisterH269: [13]And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, because they had defiled Dinah their sister,
[14]And they saidH559 H8799unto them, We cannotH3808[H3201] H8799doH6213 H8800this thingH1697, to giveH5414 H8800our sisterH269 to oneH376 that is uncircumcisedH6190; for that were a reproach unto usH2781: [14]And they said to them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised; for that would be a reproach to us;
[15]But in thisH2063 will we consentH225 H8735unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every maleH2145 of you be circumcisedH4135;[H8736] [15]But on this condition will we consent to you: that you will become like us, and circumcise every male as we are circumcised;
[16]Then will we giveH5414 H8804our daughtersH1323 unto you, and we will takeH3947 H8799your daughtersH1323 to us, and we will dwellH3427 H8804with you, and we will become oneH259 peopleH5971. [16]Then we will give our daughters to you in marriage, and take your daughters to us in marriage, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
[17]But if ye will not hearkenH8085 H8799unto us, to be circumcisedH4135 ; H8736then will we takeH3947 H8804our daughterH1323, and we will be goneH1980.[H8804] [17]But if you will not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and we will be gone
[18]And their wordsH1697 pleasedH3190[H8799] H5869HamorH2544, and ShechemH7927 Hamor'sH2544 sonH1121. [18]And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son.
[19]And the young manH5288 deferredH309 H8765not to doH6213 H8800the thingH1697, because he had delightH2654 H8804in Jacob'sH3290 daughterH1323: and he was more honourableH3513 H8737than all the houseH1004 of his fatherH1. [19]And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter and he was honored above all the household of his father.
[20]And HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 cameH935 H8799unto the gateH8179 of their cityH5892, and communedH1696 H8762with the menH582 of their cityH5892, sayingH559,[H8800] [20]Then Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their town and spoke to the men of their town, saying,
[21]These menH582 are peaceableH8003 withH854 us; therefore let them dwellH3427 H8799in the landH776, and tradeH5503 H8799therein; for the landH776, behold, it is largeH7342 enoughH3027 for themH6440; let us takeH3947 H8799their daughtersH1323 to us for wivesH802, and let us giveH5414 H8799them our daughtersH1323. [21]These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it, for the land is large enough before them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
[22]Only hereinH2063 will the menH582 consentH225 H8735unto us for to dwellH3427 H8800with us, to be oneH259 peopleH5971, if every maleH2145 among us be circumcisedH4135 , H8736as they are circumcisedH4135.[H8737] [22]But only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to become one people, when every male among us is circumcised, as they are circumcised.
[23]Shall not their cattleH4735 and their substanceH7075 and every beastH929 of theirs be ours? only let us consentH225 H8735unto them, and they will dwellH3427 with usH8799. [23]Behold, their wealth, their possessions, and all their cattle will eventually be ours; only let us consent to their proposals, and they will dwell with us.
[24]And unto HamorH2544 and unto ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 hearkenedH8085 H8799all that went outH3318 H8802of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892; and every maleH2145 was circumcisedH4135 , H8735all that went outH3318 H8802of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892. [24]And when all the adults of the town had heard from Shechem and from his father Hamor, they circumcised every male, those that went out of the gate of his town
[25]And it came to pass on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, when they were soreH3510 , H8802that twoH8147 of the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290, SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Dinah'sH1783 brethrenH251, tookH3947 H8799each manH376 his swordH2719, and cameH935 H8799upon the cityH5892 boldlyH983, and slewH2026 H8799all the malesH2145. [25]And it came to pass on the third day, when the men were sore, two sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took each man his sword, and came against the town quietly, and slew every male.
[26]And they slewH2026 H8804HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and tookH3947 DinahH1783 outH3947 H8799of Shechem'sH7927 houseH1004, and went outH3318.[H8799] [26]And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
[27]The sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 H8804upon the slainH2491, and spoiledH962 H8799the cityH5892, because they had defiledH2930 H8765their sisterH269. [27]Then the sons of Jacob came back to the slain, and plundered the town, because they had defiled their sister.
[28]They tookH3947 H8804their sheepH6629, and their oxenH1241, and their assesH2543, and that which was in the cityH5892, and that which was in the fieldH7704, [28]They took their sheep and their oxen and their asses and whatever was in the town and in the field.
[29]And all their wealthH2428, and all their little onesH2945, and their wivesH802 took they captiveH7617 , H8804and spoiledH962 H8799even all that was in the houseH1004. [29]And all their wealth and all their little ones; and their wives they carried captive, and plundered everything that was in the town.
[30]And JacobH3290 saidH559 H8799to SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Ye have troubledH5916 H8804me to make me to stinkH887 H8687among the inhabitantsH3427 H8802of the landH776, among the CanaanitesH3669 and the PerizzitesH6522: and I being fewH4962 in numberH4557, they shall gather themselves togetherH622 H8738against me, and slay meH5221 ; H8689and I shall be destroyedH8045 , H8738I and my houseH1004. [30]Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have done me a great harm, for you have hurt my reputation among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I being few in numbers, they may gather themselves together against me, and attack me; I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.
[31]And they saidH559 , H8799Should he dealH6213 H8799with our sisterH269 as with an harlotH2181?[H8802] [31]But they said, Our sister has been treated like a harlot
