| [1]And he commandedH6680 H8762the steward of his houseH1004, sayingH559 , H8800FillH4390 H8761the men'sH582 sacksH572 with foodH400, as much asH834 they canH3201 H8799carryH5375 , H8800and putH7760 H8798every man'sH376 moneyH3701 in his sack'sH572 mouthH6310. |
[1]And he commandeth him who [is] over his house, saying, `Fill the bags of the men [with] food, as they are able to bear, and put the money of each in the mouth of his bag; |
| [2]And putH7760 H8799my cupH1375, the silverH3701 cupH1375, in the sack'sH572 mouthH6310 of the youngestH6996, and his cornH7668 moneyH3701. And he didH6213 H8799according to the wordH1697 that JosephH3130 had spokenH1696.[H8765] |
[2]and my cup, the silver cup, thou dost put in the mouth of the bag of the young one, and his corn-money;' and he doth according to the word of Joseph which he hath spoken. |
| [3]As soon as the morningH1242 was lightH215 , H8804the menH582 were sent awayH7971 , H8795they and their assesH2543. |
[3]The morning is bright, and the men have been sent away, they and their asses -- |
| [4]And when they were gone outH3318 H8804of the cityH5892, and not yet far offH7368 , H8689JosephH3130 saidH559 H8804unto his stewardH1004, UpH6965 , H8798followH7291 H8798afterH310 the menH582; and when thou dost overtakeH5381 H8689them, sayH559 H8804unto them, Wherefore have ye rewardedH7999 H8765evilH7451 for goodH2896? |
[4]they have gone out of the city -- they have not gone far off -- and Joseph hath said to him who [is] over his house, `Rise, pursue after the men; and thou hast overtaken them, and thou hast said unto them, Why have ye recompensed evil for good? |
| [5]Is not this it in which my lordH113 drinkethH8354 , H8799and whereby indeedH5172 H8763he divinethH5172 ? H8762ye have done evilH7489 H8689in so doingH6213.[H8804] |
[5]Is not this that with which my lord drinketh? and he observeth diligently with it; ye have done evil [in] that which ye have done.' |
| [6]And he overtookH5381 H8686them, and he spakeH1696 H8762unto them these sameH428 wordsH1697. |
[6]And he overtaketh them, and speaketh unto them these words, |
| [7]And they saidH559 H8799unto him, Wherefore saithH1696 H8762my lordH113 these wordsH1697? God forbidH2486 that thy servantsH5650 should doH6213 H8800according to this thingH1697: |
[7]and they say unto him, `Why doth my lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word; |
| [8]Behold, the moneyH3701, which we foundH4672 H8804in our sacks'H572 mouthsH6310, we brought againH7725 H8689unto thee out of the landH776 of CanaanH3667: how then should we stealH1589 H8799out of thy lord'sH113 houseH1004 silverH3701 or goldH2091? |
[8]lo, the money which we found in the mouth of our bags we brought back unto thee from the land of Canaan, and how do we steal from the house of thy lord silver or gold? |
| [9]With whomsoever of thy servantsH5650 it be foundH4672 , H8735both let him dieH4191 , H8804and we also will be my lord'sH113 bondmenH5650. |
[9]with whomsoever of thy servants it is found, he hath died, and we also are to my lord for servants.' |
| [10]And he saidH559 , H8799Now also let it be according unto your wordsH1697: H3651he with whom it is foundH4672 H8735shall be my servantH5650; and ye shall be blamelessH5355. |
[10]And he saith, `Now, also, according to your words, so it [is]; he with whom it is found becometh my servant, and ye are acquitted;' |
| [11]Then they speedilyH4116 H8762took downH3381 H8686every manH376 his sackH572 to the groundH776, and openedH6605 H8799every manH376 his sackH572. |
[11]and they hasten and take down each his bag to the earth, and each openeth his bag; |
| [12]And he searchedH2664 , H8762and beganH2490 H8689at the eldestH1419, and leftH3615 H8765at the youngestH6996: and the cupH1375 was foundH4672 H8735in Benjamin'sH1144 sackH572. |
[12]and he searcheth -- at the eldest he hath begun, and at the youngest he hath completed -- and the cup is found in the bag of Benjamin; |
| [13]Then they rentH7167 H8799their clothesH8071, and ladedH6006 H8799every manH376 his assH2543, and returnedH7725 H8799to the cityH5892. |
[13]and they rend their garments, and each ladeth his ass, and they turn back to the city. |
| [14]And JudahH3063 and his brethrenH251 cameH935 H8799to Joseph'sH3130 houseH1004; for he was yet there: and they fellH5307 H8799before himH6440 on the groundH776. |
[14]And Judah -- his brethren also -- cometh in unto the house of Joseph, and he is yet there, and they fall before him to the earth; |
| [15]And JosephH3130 saidH559 H8799unto them, What deedH4639 is this that ye have doneH6213 ? H8804wot yeH3045 H8804not that such a manH376 as I can certainlyH5172 H8763divineH5172?[H8762] |
[15]and Joseph saith to them, `What [is] this deed that ye have done? have ye not known that a man like me doth diligently observe?' |
| [16]And JudahH3063 saidH559 , H8799What shall we sayH559 H8799unto my lordH113? what shall we speakH1696 ? H8762or how shall we clear ourselvesH6663 ? H8691GodH430 hath found outH4672 H8804the iniquityH5771 of thy servantsH5650: behold, we are my lord'sH113 servantsH5650, both we, and he alsoH1571 with whomH834 H3027the cupH1375 is foundH4672.[H8738] |
[16]And Judah saith, `What do we say to my lord? what do we speak? and what -- do we justify ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; lo, we [are] servants to my lord, both we, and he in whose hand the cup hath been found;' |
| [17]And he saidH559 , H8799God forbidH2486 that I should doH6213 H8800soH2063: but the manH376 in whose handH3027 the cupH1375 is foundH4672 , H8738he shall be my servantH5650; and as for you, get you upH5927 H8798in peaceH7965 unto your fatherH1. |
[17]and he saith, `Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.' |
| [18]Then JudahH3063 came nearH5066 H8799unto him, and saidH559 , H8799OhH994 my lordH113, let thy servantH5650, I pray thee, speakH1696 H8762a wordH1697 in my lord'sH113 earsH241, and let not thine angerH639 burnH2734 H8799against thy servantH5650: for thou art even as PharaohH6547. |
[18]And Judah cometh nigh unto him, and saith, `O, my lord, let thy servant speak, I pray thee, a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant -- for thou art as Pharaoh. |
| [19]My lordH113 askedH7592 H8804his servantsH5650, sayingH559 , H8800HaveH3426 ye a fatherH1, or a brotherH251? |
[19]My lord hath asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or brother? |
| [20]And we saidH559 H8799unto my lordH113, We haveH3426 a fatherH1, an old manH2205, and a childH3206 of his old ageH2208, a little oneH6996; and his brotherH251 is deadH4191 , H8804and he alone is leftH3498 H8735of his motherH517, and his fatherH1 lovethH157 himH8804. |
[20]and we say unto my lord, We have a father, an aged one, and a child of old age, a little one; and his brother died, and he is left alone of his mother, and his father hath loved him. |
| [21]And thou saidstH559 H8799unto thy servantsH5650, Bring him downH3381 H8685unto me, that I may setH7760 H8799mine eyes upon himH5869. |
[21]`And thou sayest unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, and I set mine eye upon him; |
| [22]And we saidH559 H8799unto my lordH113, The ladH5288 cannotH3201 H8799leaveH5800 H8800his fatherH1: for if he should leaveH5800 H8804his fatherH1, his father would dieH4191.[H8804] |
[22]and we say unto my lord, The youth is not able to leave his father, when he hath left his father, then he hath died; |
| [23]And thou saidstH559 H8799unto thy servantsH5650, ExceptH3808 your youngestH6996 brotherH251 come downH3381 H8799with you, ye shall seeH7200 H3254my faceH6440 no moreH7200[H8800].[H3254][H8686] |
[23]and thou sayest unto thy servants, If your young brother come not down with you, ye add not to see my face. |
| [24]And it came to pass when we came upH5927 H8804unto thy servantH5650 my fatherH1, we toldH5046 H8686him the wordsH1697 of my lordH113. |
[24]`And it cometh to pass, that we have come up unto thy servant my father, that we declare to him the words of my lord; |
| [25]And our fatherH1 saidH559 , H8799Go againH7725 , H8798and buyH7666 H8798us a littleH4592 foodH400. |
[25]and our father saith, Turn back, buy for us a little food, |
| [26]And we saidH559 , H8799We cannotH3201 H8799go downH3381 : H8800if our youngestH6996 brotherH251 beH3426 with us, then will we go downH3381 : H8804for we mayH3201 H8799not seeH7200 H8800the man'sH376 faceH6440, exceptH369 our youngestH6996 brother be with usH251. |
[26]and we say, We are not able to go down; if our young brother is with us, then we have gone down; for we are not able to see the man's face, and our young brother not with us. |
| [27]And thy servantH5650 my fatherH1 saidH559 H8799unto us, Ye knowH3045 H8804that my wifeH802 bareH3205 H8804me two sonsH8147: |
[27]`And thy servant my father saith unto us, Ye -- ye have known that two did my wife bare to me, |
| [28]And the oneH259 went outH3318 H8799from me, and I saidH559 , H8799SurelyH2963 H8800he is torn in piecesH2963 ; H8776and I saw himH7200 H8804not sinceH2008: |
[28]and the one goeth out from me, and I say, Surely he is torn -- torn! and I have not seen him since; |
| [29]And if ye takeH3947 H8804this also fromH5973 meH6440, and mischiefH611 befall himH7136 , H8804ye shall bring downH3381 H8689my gray hairsH7872 with sorrowH7451 to the graveH7585. |
[29]when ye have taken also this from my presence, and mischief hath met him, then ye have brought down my grey hairs with evil to sheol. |
| [30]Now therefore when I comeH935 H8800to thy servantH5650 my fatherH1, and the ladH5288 be not with us; seeing that his lifeH5315 is bound upH7194 H8803in the lad's lifeH5315; |
[30]`And now, at my coming in unto thy servant my father, and the youth not with us (and his soul is bound up in his soul), |
| [31]It shall come to pass, when he seethH7200 H8800that the ladH5288 is not with us, that he will dieH4191 : H8804and thy servantsH5650 shall bring downH3381 H8689the gray hairsH7872 of thy servantH5650 our fatherH1 with sorrowH3015 to the graveH7585. |
[31]then it hath come to pass when he seeth that the youth is not, that he hath died, and thy servants have brought down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to sheol; |
| [32]For thy servantH5650 became suretyH6148 H8804for the ladH5288 untoH5973 my fatherH1, sayingH559 , H8800If I bringH935 H8686him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blameH2398 H8804to my fatherH1 for everH3117. |
[32]for thy servant obtained the youth by surety from my father, saying, If I bring him not in unto thee -- then I have sinned against my father all the days. |
| [33]Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servantH5650 abideH3427 H8799instead of the ladH5288 a bondmanH5650 to my lordH113; and let the ladH5288 go upH5927 H8799with his brethrenH251. |
[33]`And now, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the youth a servant to my lord, and the youth goeth up with his brethren, |
| [34]For howH349 shall I go upH5927 H8799to my fatherH1, and the ladH5288 be not with me? lest peradventure I seeH7200 H8799the evilH7451 that shall come onH4672 H8799my fatherH1. |
[34]for how do I go up unto my father, and the youth not with me? lest I look on the evil which doth find my father.' |
