| [1]THEN Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came up to Jesus, saying, |
[1]Tunc accesserunt ad eum ab Jerosolymis scribæ et pharisæi, dicentes: |
| [2]Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders, and they do not wash their hands when they eat food? |
[2]Quare discipuli tui transgrediuntur traditionem seniorum? non enim lavant manus suas cum panem manducant. |
| [3]Jesus answered and said to them, Why do you also disregard the commandment of God on account of your tradition. |
[3]Ipse autem respondens ait illis: Quare et vos transgredimini mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram? Nam Deus dixit: |
| [4]For God said, Honor your father and your mother, and whoever curses his father and his mother, let him be put to death. |
[4]Honora patrem, et matrem: et, Qui maledixerit patri, vel matri, morte moriatur. |
| [5]But you say, Whoever says to a father or to a mother, Whatever you may be benefited from me is Corban (my offering), he need not honor his father or his mother. |
[5]Vos autem dicitis: Quicumque dixerit patri, vel matri: Munus, quodcumque est ex me, tibi proderit: |
| [6]So you have rendered useless the word of God for the sake of your tradition. |
[6]et non honorificavit patrem suum, aut matrem suam: et irritum fecistis mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram. |
| [7]O you hypocrites, the prophet Isaiah well prophesied concerning you and said, |
[7]Hypocritæ, bene prophetavit de vobis Isaias, dicens: |
| [8]This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me. |
[8]Populus hic labiis me honorat: cor autem eorum longe est a me. |
| [9]And they worship me in vain, when they teach the doctrines of the commandments of men. |
[9]Sine causa autem colunt me, docentes doctrinas et mandata hominum. |
| [10]Then he called the people and said to them, Listen and understand. |
[10]Et convocatis ad se turbis, dixit eis: Audite, et intelligite. |
| [11]It is not what enters into the mouth which defiles man; but what goes out of the mouth, that is what defiles man. |
[11]Non quod intrat in os, coinquinat hominem: sed quod procedit ex ore, hoc coinquinat hominem. |
| [12]Then his disciples came up and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees who heard this saying were offended? |
[12]Tunc accedentes discipuli ejus, dixerunt ei: Scis quia pharisæi audito verbo hoc, scandalizati sunt? |
| [13]But he answered and said to them, Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant, shall be uprooted. |
[13]At ille respondens ait: Omnis plantatio, quam non plantavit Pater meus cælestis, eradicabitur. |
| [14]Leave them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if the blind lead around the blind, both will fall into a pit. |
[14]Sinite illos: cæci sunt, et duces cæcorum; cæcus autem si cæco ducatum præstet, ambo in foveam cadunt. |
| [15]And Simon Peter answered and said to him, My Lord, explain this parable to us. |
[15]Respondens autem Petrus dixit ei: Edissere nobis parabolam istam. |
| [16]And he said to them, Even yet do you not understand? |
[16]At ille dixit: Adhuc et vos sine intellectu estis? |
| [17]Do you not know that what enters into the mouth goes into the stomach, and thence, through the intestines, is cast out? |
[17]Non intelligitis quia omne quod in os intrat, in ventrem vadit, et in secessum emittitur? |
| [18]But what comes out of the mouth comes out from the heart; and that is what defiles man. |
[18]Quæ autem procedunt de ore, de corde exeunt, et ea coinquinant hominem: |
| [19]For from the heart come out evil thoughts, such as fornication, murder, adultery, theft, false witness, blasphemy. |
[19]de corde enim exeunt cogitationes malæ, homicidia, adulteria, fornicationes, furta, falsa testimonia, blasphemiæ: |
| [20]It is these that defile man; but if a man should eat when his hands are unwashed, he will not be defiled. |
[20]hæc sunt, quæ coinquinant hominem. Non lotis autem manibus manducare, non coinquinat hominem. |
| [21]And Jesus went out from thence, and he came to the border of Tyre and Sidon. |
[21]Et egressus inde Jesus secessit in partes Tyri et Sidonis. |
| [22]And behold, a Canaanite woman from these borders, came out crying aloud, and saying, Have mercy on me, O my Lord, son of David; my daughter is seriously afflicted with insanity. |
[22]Et ecce mulier chananæa a finibus illis egressa clamavit, dicens ei: Miserere mei, Domine fili David: filia mea male a dæmonio vexatur. |
| [23]But he did not answer her. And his disciples came up to him and urged him, saying, Dismiss her, for she keeps crying aloud after us. |
[23]Qui non respondit ei verbum. Et accedentes discipuli ejus rogabant eum dicentes: Dimitte eam: quia clamat post nos. |
| [24]And he answered and said to them, I am not sent, except to the sheep which went astray from the house of Israel. |
[24]Ipse autem respondens ait: Non sum missus nisi ad oves, quæ perierunt domus Israël. |
| [25]But she came and worshipped him, and said, My Lord, help me. |
[25]At illa venit, et adoravit eum, dicens: Domine, adjuva me. |
| [26]Jesus said to her, It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. |
[26]Qui respondens ait: Non est bonum sumere panem filiorum, et mittere canibus. |
| [27]But she said Yes, my Lord, even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from the master's tray, and they live. |
[27]At illa dixit: Etiam Domine: nam et catelli edunt de micis quæ cadunt de mensa dominorum suorum. |
| [28]Then Jesus said to her, O woman, your faith is great; let it be to you as you wish; and her daughter was healed from that very hour. |
[28]Tunc respondens Jesus, ait illi: O mulier, magna est fides tua: fiat tibi sicut vis. Et sanata est filia ejus ex illa hora. |
| [29]And Jesus departed from thence, and he came toward the sea of Galilee; and he went up to a mountain and sat down there. |
[29]Et cum transisset inde Jesus, venit secus mare Galilææ: et ascendens in montem, sedebat ibi. |
| [30]And a great many people came to him, who had with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them. |
[30]Et accesserunt ad eum turbæ multæ, habentes secum mutos, cæcos, claudos, debiles, et alios multos: et projecerunt eos ad pedes ejus, et curavit eos, |
| [31]So that the people wondered, to see the dumb speaking, and the maimed healed, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they praised the God of Israel. |
[31]ita ut turbæ mirarentur, videntes mutos loquentes, claudos ambulantes, cæcos videntes: et magnificabant Deum Israël. |
| [32]Jesus then called his disciples and said to them, I have compassion for this people, for they have remained with me three days, and they have nothing to eat; and if I dismiss them fasting, they might faint on the way; but this I do not wish to do. |
[32]Jesus autem, convocatis discipulis suis, dixit: Misereor turbæ, quia triduo jam perseverant mecum, et non habent quod manducent: et dimittere eos jejunos nolo, ne deficiant in via. |
| [33]His disciples said to him, Where can we get bread in this desolate place to feed all this people? |
[33]Et dicunt ei discipuli: Unde ergo nobis in deserto panes tantos, ut saturemus turbam tantam? |
| [34]Jesus said to them, How many loaves of bread have you? They said to him, Seven, and a few small fish. |
[34]Et ait illis Jesus: Quot habetis panes? At illi dixerunt: Septem, et paucos pisciculos. |
| [35]So he ordered the people to sit on the ground. |
[35]Et præcepit turbæ ut discumberent super terram. |
| [36]Then he took the seven loaves of bread and the fish, and gave thanks, and he broke them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. |
[36]Et accipiens septem panes, et pisces, et gratias agens, fregit, et dedit discipulis suis, et discipuli dederunt populo. |
| [37]And all of them did eat and were satisfied; and they took up of the fragments that were left over, seven full baskets. |
[37]Et comederunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et quod superfuit de fragmentis, tulerunt septem sportas plenas. |
| [38]And those who did eat were four thousand men, besides women and children. |
[38]Erant autem qui manducaverunt quatuor millia hominum, extra parvulos et mulieres. |
| [39]And when he had dismissed the people, he went up to the boat and came to the border of Magadan. |
[39]Et, dimissa turba, ascendit in naviculam: et venit in fines Magedan. |
