| [1]When the mornyng was come, all the chiefe priestes, and the elders of the people, helde a councell agaynst Iesus to put hym to death |
[1]WHEN it was morning, the high priests and the elders of the people took counsel concerning Jesus, how to put him to death. |
| [2]And brought hym bounde, and deliuered hym to Pontius Pilate the deputie |
[2]So they bound him, and took him and delivered him to Pilate the governor. |
| [3]Then Iudas, whiche had betrayed hym, seyng that he was condempned, repented hym selfe, and brought agayne the thirtie peeces of syluer, to the chiefe priestes and elders |
[3]Then Judas the traitor, when he saw that Jesus was convicted, repented, and went away and brought back the same thirty pieces of silver to the high priests and the elders. |
| [4]Saying: I haue synned, betraying the innocent blood. And they said: what is that to vs? see thou to that |
[4]And he said, I have sinned, because I have betrayed innocent blood. But they said to him, What is that to us? You know better. |
| [5]And he cast downe the peeces of siluer in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged hym selfe |
[5]Then he threw the silver in the temple, and departed; and he went and hanged himself. |
| [6]And the chiefe priestes toke the peeces of syluer, and sayde: It is not lawfull for to put the into the treasurie, because it is the price of blood |
[6]The high priests took the silver and said, It is not lawful to put it in the house of offerings, because it is the price of blood. |
| [7]And they toke councell, and bought with them a potters fielde, to burye straungers in |
[7]And they took counsel, and bought with it the potter's field, for a cemetery for strangers. |
| [8]Wherfore that fielde is called the fielde of blood, vntyll this day |
[8]On this account that field was called The field of blood, to this day. |
| [9](Then was fulfylled that, which was spoken by Ieremie the prophet, saying: And they toke thirtie siluer peeces, the price of hym that was valued, whom they bought of the children of Israel |
[9]Then what was spoken by the prophet was fulfilled, who said, I took the thirty pieces of silver, the costly price which was bargained with the children of Israel. |
| [10]And gaue them for the potters fielde, as the Lorde appoynted me. |
[10]And I gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me. |
| [11]Iesus stode before the deputie, and the deputie asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Iewes? Iesus saith vnto hym: thou sayest |
[11]And Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus said to him, You say that. |
| [12]And when he was accused of the chiefe priestes and elders, he aunswered nothyng |
[12]And while the chief priests and elders were accusing him, he gave no answer. |
| [13]Then sayth Pilate vnto him: hearest thou not how many witnesses they lay agaynst thee |
[13]Then Pilate said to him, Do you not hear how much they testify against you? |
| [14]And he aunswered hym to neuer a worde: insomuch, that the deputie marueyled greatly |
[14]But he did not answer him, not even a word; and because of this Pilate marvelled greatly. |
| [15]At that feast, the deputie was wont to delyuer vnto the people a prysoner, whom they woulde desire |
[15]Now on every feast day it was the custom of the governor to release one prisoner to the people, anyone whom they wanted. |
| [16]He had then a notable prysoner, called Barabbas |
[16]They had a well-known prisoner, called Bar-Abbas, who was bound. |
| [17]Therfore, when they were gathered together, Pilate saide vnto them: whether wyll ye that I geue loose vnto you Barabbas, or Iesus, whiche is called Christe |
[17]When they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom do you want me to release to you? Bar-Abbas, or Jesus who is called the Christ? |
| [18]For he knewe, that for enuy they had delyuered hym |
[18]For Pilate knew that because of envy they had delivered him. |
| [19]When he was set downe to geue iudgment, his wyfe sent vnto hym, saying: haue thou nothing to do with that iuste man: For I haue suffred many thynges this day in a dreame because of him |
[19]When the governor was sitting on his judgment seat, his wife sent to him and said to him, Have nothing to do with that righteous man; for today I have suffered a great deal in my dream because of him. |
| [20]But the chiefe priestes & elders perswaded the people, that they shoulde aske Barabbas, and destroy Iesus |
[20]But the high priests and the elders urged the people to ask for Bar-Abbas, and to destroy Jesus. |
| [21]The deputie aunswered, and saide vnto them: Whether of the twayne wyll ye that I let loose vnto you? They saide, Barabbas |
[21]And the governor answered and said to them, Which of these two do you want me to release to you? They said, Bar-Abbas. |
| [22]Pilate sayde vnto them: What shall I do then with Iesus, whiche is called Christe? They all sayde vnto hym: let hym be crucified |
[22]Pilate said to them, What shall I then do with Jesus who is called the Christ? They all said, Let him be crucified. |
| [23]The deputie sayde: What euyll hath he done? But they cryed the more, saying: let hym be crucified |
[23]Pilate said to them, What evil has he done? But they cried out the more and said, Let him be crucified. |
| [24]When Pilate sawe that he coulde preuayle nothyng, but that more busynesse was made, he toke water, and washed his handes before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this iust person, see ye to it |
[24]Now when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but that instead confusion was increasing, he took water and washed his hands before the people, and said, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; do as you please. |
| [25]Then aunswered all the people, and sayde: His blood be on vs, and on our chyldren |
[25]All the people then answered and said, Let his blood be on us and on our children. |
| [26]Then let he Barabbas loose vnto them, and scourged Iesus, and deliuered hym to be crucified |
[26]Then he released to them Bar-Abbas, and had Jesus scourged with whips, and delivered to be crucified. |
| [27]Then the souldiours of the deputie toke Iesus in the common hall, and gathered vnto hym all the bande [of souldiours. |
[27]Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and the whole company gathered around him. |
| [28]And they stripped hym, and put on hym a skarlet robe |
[28]And they removed his clothes and put on him a scarlet robe. |
| [29]And platted a crowne of thornes, and put vppon his head, and a reede in his right hande, and bowed the knee before hym, and mocked hym, saying: Hayle kyng of the Iewes |
[29]And they wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they knelt on their knees before him, and they were mocking him and saying, Hail, King of the Jews! |
| [30]And when they had spyt vpon hym, they toke the reede, and smote hym on the head |
[30]And they spat in his face, and took the reed and struck him on his head. |
| [31]And after that they had mocked him, they toke the robe of hym agayne, and put his owne rayment on hym, and led hym away, to crucifie hym |
[31]And when they had mocked him, they took off the robe from him and put on him his own clothes, and took him away to be crucified. |
| [32]And as they came out, they founde a man of Cyrene, named Simon: hym they compelled to beare his crosse |
[32]And as they were going out, they found a man of Cyrene, whose name was Simon, whom they compelled to carry his cross. |
| [33]And they came vnto the place, which is called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of [dead mens] skulles |
[33]And they came to a place which is called Golgotha, which is interpreted The Skull. |
| [34]And gaue him vineger to drinke, mingled with gall: And when he had tasted therof, he woulde not drynke |
[34]And they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall; and he tasted it, but he would not drink. |
| [35]When they had crucified hym, they parted his garmentes, & did cast lottes, that it myght be fulfylled whiche was spoken by the prophete: They departed my garmentes among them, & vpon my vesture dyd they cast lottes |
[35]And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by casting lots. |
| [36]And they sate, & watched him there |
[36]And they were sitting there and watching him. |
| [37]And set vp ouer his head, the cause [of his death] written: This is Iesus, the king of the Iewes |
[37]And they placed above his head in writing the reason for his death: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
| [38]Then were there two thieues crucified with hym: one on the ryght hande, and another on the left |
[38]And there were crucified with him two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. |
| [39]They that passed by, reuyled hym, waggyng their heades |
[39]And those who passed by blasphemed against him, nodding their heads, |
| [40]And saying: Thou that destroyedst the temple, & buyldest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe. If thou be the sonne of God, come downe from the crosse |
[40]And saying, O you who can tear down the temple and build it in three days, deliver yourself, if you are the Son of God, and come down from the cross. |
| [41]Lykewyse also the hye priestes, mockyng hym, with the scribes, and elders, [and pharisees] sayde |
[41]The high priests likewise were mocking, together with the scribes, the elders and the Pharisees. |
| [42]He saued other, hym selfe can he not saue. If he be the kyng of Israel, let him nowe come downe from the crosse, and we wyll beleue hym |
[42]And they were saying, He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe in him. |
| [43]He trusted in God, let hym delyuer hym nowe, yf he wyll haue hym: for he sayde, I am the sonne of God |
[43]He trusted in God; let him save him now, if he is pleased with him; for he said, I am God's Son. |
| [44]The thieues also which were crucified with hym, cast the same in his teeth |
[44]The bandits also, who were crucified with him were reproaching him. |
| [45]Fro the sixth houre, was there darknesse ouer all the lande, vnto the nynth houre |
[45]Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour. |
| [46]And about the nynth houre, Iesus cried with a loude voyce, saying: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, that is to say: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me |
[46]And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, Eli, Eli, lmana shabachthani! which means, My God, my God, for this I was kept! |
| [47]Some of them that stode there, when they hearde that, saide: This man calleth for Elias |
[47]Some of the men who were standing by, when they heard it, said, This man has called for Elijah. |
| [48]And straightway one of them ranne, and toke a sponge, and when he had filled it full of vineger, he put it on a reede, and gaue hym to drynke |
[48]And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. |
| [49]Other sayde, let be, let vs see whether Elias wyll come and saue hym |
[49]But the rest said, Hush, let us see if Elijah will come to save him. |
| [50]Iesus, when he had cryed agayne with a loude voyce, yeelded vp ye ghost |
[50]But Jesus again cried out with a loud voice, and gave up his breath. |
| [51]And beholde, the vayle of the temple dyd rent into two partes, fro the toppe to the bottome, and the earth did quake and the stones rent |
[51]And immediately the door curtains of the temple were rent in two, from the top to the bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks split; |
| [52]And graues dyd open, and many bodyes of saintes which slept, arose |
[52]And the tombs were opened; and the bodies of a great many saints who were sleeping in death rose up, |
| [53]And went out of the graues, after his resurrection, and came into the holy citie, and appeared vnto many |
[53]And they went out; and after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city, and appeared to a great many. |
| [54]When the Centurion, and they that were with hym watchyng Iesus, sawe the earthquake, and those thynges that were done, they feared greatly, saying: truely, this was the sonne of God |
[54]When the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus, saw the earthquake and all that happened, they were very much frightened, and they said, Truly this man was the Son of God. |
| [55]And many wome were there (beholdyng hym a farre of) whiche folowed Iesus fro Galilee, ministring vnto him |
[55]There were also many women there, who were looking from afar, those who had followed Jesus from Galilee, and who used to minister to him. |
| [56]Among which, was Marie Magdalene, and Marie the mother of Iames and Ioses, & the mother of Zebedees chyldren |
[56]One of them was Mary of Magdala; and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. |
| [57]When the euen was come, there came a ryche man of Aramathia, named Ioseph, which also hym selfe was Iesus disciple |
[57]When evening came, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, whose name was Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. |
| [58]He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Iesus. Then Pilate comaunded the body to be delyuered |
[58]He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate commanded that the body should be given to him. |
| [59]And when Ioseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a cleane lynnen cloth |
[59]So Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a shroud of fine linen, |
| [60]And layde it in his newe tombe, which he had hewen out, euen in the rocke, and rolled a great stone to the dore of the sepulchre, and departed |
[60]And laid it in his own new tomb which was hewn in a rock; and they rolled a large stone, and placed it against the door of the tomb, and went away. |
| [61]And there was Marie Magdalene, & the other Marie, syttyng ouer against the sepulchre |
[61]And there were there Mary of Magdala and the other Mary, who were sitting opposite the tomb. |
| [62]The next day that folowed the day of preparyng, the hye priestes and pharisees came together vnto Pilate |
[62]The next day, which is after Friday, the high priests and the Pharisees together came to Pilate, |
| [63]Saying. Sir, we remember that this deceauer sayde whyle he was yet aliue: After three dayes I wil arise agayne |
[63]And they said to him, Our lord, we have just remembered that that deceiver used to say when he was alive, After three days I will rise again. |
| [64]Commaunde therfore, that the sepulchre be made sure, vntyll the thirde day: lest his disciples come by nyght & steale hym away, and say vnto the people, he is rysen from the dead: & the last error shalbe worse then the first |
[64]Now, therefore, command that precautions be taken at the tomb for three days. It is probable that his disciples may come and steal him at night, and then say to the people, He has risen from the dead; and the last deception will be worse than the first. |
| [65]Pilate sayde vnto them: Ye haue the watche, go your way, make it as sure as ye knowe |
[65]Pilate said to them, You have guards; go and take precautions as best you know. |
| [66]So they went, and made the sepulchre sure with the watch, and sealed the stone |
[66]So they went and kept a watch at the tomb, and together with the guards they sealed the stone. |
