[1]The visionH2377 of ObadiahH5662. Thus saithH559[H8804] the LordH136 GODH3069 concerning EdomH123; We have heardH8085[H8804] a rumourH8052 from the LORDH3068, and an ambassadorH6735 is sentH7971[H8795] among the heathenH1471, AriseH6965[H8798] ye, and let us rise upH6965[H8799] against her in battleH4421. [1]The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God against Edom, We have heard a rumor from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen: arise, and let us rise up against her to battle.
[2]Behold, I have madeH5414[H8804] thee smallH6996 among the heathenH1471: thou art greatlyH3966 despisedH959.[H8803] [2]Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art utterly despised.
[3]The prideH2087 of thine heartH3820 hath deceivedH5377[H8689] thee, thou that dwellestH7931[H8802] in the cleftsH2288 of the rockH5553, whose habitationH3427[H8800] is highH4791; that saithH559[H8802] in his heartH3820, Who shall bring me downH3381[H8686] to the groundH776? [3]The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee: thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rocks, whose habitation is high, that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
[4]Though thou exaltH1361[H8686] thyself as the eagleH5404, and though thou setH7760[H8800] thy nestH7064 among the starsH3556, thence will I bring thee downH3381[H8686], saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068. [4]Yea though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and make thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.
[5]If thievesH1590 cameH935[H8804] to thee, if robbersH7703[H8802] by nightH3915, (howH349 art thou cut offH1820[H8738])! would they not have stolenH1589[H8799] till they had enoughH1767? if the grapegatherersH1219[H8802] cameH935[H8804] to thee, would they not leaveH7604[H8686] some grapesH5955? [5]Came thieves to thee or robbers by night? How wast thou brought to silence? Would they not have stolen, till they had enough? If the grape gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?
[6]How are the things of EsauH6215 searched outH2664[H8738]! how are his hiddenH4710 H1158things sought upH8738 [6]How are the things of Esau sought up, and his treasures searched?
[7]All the menH582 of thy confederacyH1285 have broughtH7971[H8765] thee even to the borderH1366: the menH582 that were at peaceH7965 with thee have deceivedH5377[H8689] thee, and prevailedH3201[H8804] against thee; they that eat thy breadH3899 have laidH7760[H8799] a woundH4204 under thee: there is none understanding in himH8394. [7]All the men of thy confederacy have driven thee to the borders: the men that were at peace with thee, have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee: they that eat thy bread, have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.
[8]Shall I not in that dayH3117, saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068, even destroyH6[H8689] the wiseH2450 men out of EdomH123, and understandingH8394 out of the mountH2022 of EsauH6215? [8]Shall not I in that day, saith the Lord, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding from the mount of Esau?
[9]And thy mightyH1368 men, O TemanH8487, shall be dismayedH2865[H8804], to the end that every oneH376 of the mountH2022 of EsauH6215 may be cut offH3772[H8735] by slaughterH6993. [9]And thy strong men, O Teman, shall be afraid, because everyone of the mount of Esau shall be cut off by slaughter.
[10]For thy violenceH2555 against thy brotherH251 JacobH3290 shameH955 shall coverH3680[H8762] thee, and thou shalt be cut offH3772[H8738] for everH5769. [10]For thy cruelty against thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off forever.
[11]In the dayH3117 that thou stoodestH5975[H8800] on the other side, in the dayH3117 that the strangersH2114[H8801] carried away captiveH7617[H8800] his forcesH2428, and foreignersH5237 enteredH935[H8804] into his gatesH8179, and castH3032[H8804] lotsH1486 upon JerusalemH3389, even thou wast as one of themH259. [11]When thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away his substance, and strangers entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
[12]But thou shouldest not have lookedH7200[H8799] on the dayH3117 of thy brotherH251 in the dayH3117 that he became a strangerH5235; neither shouldest thou have rejoicedH8055[H8799] over the childrenH1121 of JudahH3063 in the dayH3117 of their destructionH6[H8800]; neither shouldest thou have spokenH6310 proudlyH1431[H8686] in the dayH3117 of distressH6869. [12]But thou shouldest not have beholden the day of thy brother, in the day that he was made a stranger, neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah, in the day of their destruction: thou shouldest not have spoken proudly in the day of affliction.
[13]Thou shouldest not have enteredH935[H8799] into the gateH8179 of my peopleH5971 in the dayH3117 of their calamityH343; yea, thou shouldest not have lookedH7200[H8799] on their afflictionH7451 in the dayH3117 of their calamityH343, nor have laidH7971[H8799] hands on their substanceH2428 in the dayH3117 of their calamityH343; [13]Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people, in the day of their destruction, neither shouldest thou have once looked on their affliction in the day of their destruction, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their destruction.
[14]Neither shouldest thou have stoodH5975[H8799] in the crosswayH6563, to cut offH3772[H8687] those of his that did escapeH6412; neither shouldest thou have delivered upH5462[H8686] those of his that did remainH8300 in the dayH3117 of distressH6869. [14]Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway to cut off them, that should escape, neither shouldest thou have shut up the remnant thereof in the day of affliction.
[15]For the dayH3117 of the LORDH3068 is nearH7138 upon all the heathenH1471: as thou hast doneH6213[H8804], it shall be doneH6213[H8735] unto thee: thy rewardH1576 shall returnH7725[H8799] upon thine own headH7218. [15]For the day of the Lord is near, upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done to thee: thy reward shall return upon thine head.
[16]For as ye have drunkH8354[H8804] upon my holyH6944 mountainH2022, so shall all the heathenH1471 drinkH8354[H8799] continuallyH8548, yea, they shall drinkH8354[H8804], and they shall swallow downH3886[H8804], and they shall be as though they had not beenH3808. [16]For as ye have drunk upon mine holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually: yea, they shall drink and swallow up, and they shall be as though they had not been.
[17]But upon mountH2022 ZionH6726 shall be deliveranceH6413, and there shall be holinessH6944; and the houseH1004 of JacobH3290 shall possessH3423[H8804] their possessionsH4180. [17]But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and it shall be holy, and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions,
[18]And the houseH1004 of JacobH3290 shall be a fireH784, and the houseH1004 of JosephH3130 a flameH3852, and the houseH1004 of EsauH6215 for stubbleH7179, and they shall kindleH1814[H8804] in them, and devourH398[H8804] them; and there shall not be any remainingH8300 of the houseH1004 of EsauH6215; for the LORDH3068 hath spokenH1696 itH8765. [18]And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau as stubble, and they shall kindle in them and devour them: and there shall be no remnant of the house of Esau for the Lord hath spoken it.
[19]And they of the southH5045 shall possessH3423[H8804] the mountH2022 of EsauH6215; and they of the plainH8219 the PhilistinesH6430: and they shall possessH3423[H8804] the fieldsH7704 of EphraimH669, and the fieldsH7704 of SamariaH8111: and BenjaminH1144 shall possess GileadH1568. [19]And they shall possess the south side of the mount of Esau, and the plain of the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin shall have Gilead.
[20]And the captivityH1546 of this hostH2426 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 shall possess that of the CanaanitesH3669, even unto ZarephathH6886; and the captivityH1546 of JerusalemH3389, which is in SepharadH5614, shall possessH3423[H8799] the citiesH5892 of the southH5045. [20]And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel, which were among the Canaanites, shall possess unto Zarephath, and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
[21]And savioursH3467[H8688] shall come upH5927[H8804] on mountH2022 ZionH6726 to judgeH8199[H8800] the mountH2022 of EsauH6215; and the kingdomH4410 shall be the LORD'SH3068. [21]And they that shall save, shall come up to mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.
