[1]And when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him, as his own soul. |
| [2]And SaulH7586 tookH3947[H8799] him that dayH3117, and would letH5414[H8804] him go no more homeH7725[H8800] to his father'sH1 houseH1004. |
[2]And Saul took him that day, and would not let him return to his father's house. |
| [3]Then JonathanH3083 and DavidH1732 madeH3772[H8799] a covenantH1285, because he lovedH160 him as his own soulH5315. |
[3]Then Jonathan and David made a covenant: for he loved him as his own soul. |
| [4]And JonathanH3083 strippedH6584[H8691] himself of the robeH4598 that was upon him, and gaveH5414[H8799] it to DavidH1732, and his garmentsH4055, even to his swordH2719, and to his bowH7198, and to his girdleH2289. |
[4]And Jonathan put off the robe that was upon him, and gave it David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. |

[5]And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: so that Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants. |

[6]When they came again, and David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet king Saul, with timbrels, with instruments of joy, and with rebecks. |
| [7]And the womenH802 answeredH6030[H8799] one another as they playedH7832[H8764], and saidH559[H8799], SaulH7586 hath slainH5221[H8689] his thousandsH505, and DavidH1732 his ten thousandsH7233. |
[7]And the women sang by course in their play, and said, Saul hath slain his thousand, and David his ten thousand. |
| [8]And SaulH7586 was veryH3966 wrothH2734[H8799], and the sayingH1697 displeasedH3415[H8799][H5869] him; and he saidH559[H8799], They have ascribedH5414[H8804] unto DavidH1732 ten thousandsH7233, and to me they have ascribedH5414[H8804] but thousandsH505: and what can he have more but the kingdomH4410? |
[8]Therefore Saul was exceeding wroth, and the saying displeased him, and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousand, and to me they have ascribed but a thousand, and what can he have more save the kingdom? |
| [9]And SaulH7586 eyedH5770[H8802] DavidH1732 from that dayH3117 and forwardH1973. |
[9]Wherefore Saul had an eye on David from that day forward. |
| [10]And it came to pass on the morrowH4283, that the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 cameH6743[H8799] upon SaulH7586, and he prophesiedH5012[H8691] in the midstH8432 of the houseH1004: and DavidH1732 playedH5059[H8764] with his handH3027, as at other timesH3117: and there was a javelinH2595 in Saul'sH7586 handH3027. |
[10]And on the morrow, the evil spirit of God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand like as at other times, and there was a spear in Saul's hand. |
| [11]And SaulH7586 castH2904[H8686] the javelinH2595; for he saidH559[H8799], I will smiteH5221[H8686] DavidH1732 even to the wallH7023 with it. And DavidH1732 avoided outH5437[H8735] of his presenceH6440 twiceH6471. |
[11]And Saul took the spear, and said, I will smite David through to the wall. But David avoided twice out of his presence. |
| [12]And SaulH7586 was afraidH3372[H8799] ofH6440 DavidH1732, because the LORDH3068 was with him, and was departedH5493[H8804] from SaulH7586. |
[12]And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul. |
| [13]Therefore SaulH7586 removedH5493[H8686] him from him, and madeH7760[H8799] him his captainH8269 over a thousandH505; and he went outH3318[H8799] and came inH935[H8799] beforeH6440 the peopleH5971. |
[13]Therefore Saul put him from him, and made him a captain over a thousand, and he went out and in before the people. |
| [14]And DavidH1732 behaved himself wiselyH7919[H8688] in all his waysH1870; and the LORD was with himH3068. |
[14]And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways: for the Lord was with him. |
| [15]Wherefore when SaulH7586 sawH7200[H8799] that he behavedH7919 himself veryH3966 wiselyH7919[H8688], he was afraidH1481[H8799] of himH6440. |
[15]Wherefore when Saul saw that he was very wise, he was afraid of him. |
| [16]But all IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063 lovedH157[H8802] DavidH1732, because he went outH3318[H8802] and came inH935[H8802] before themH6440. |
[16]For all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and in before them. |
| [17]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, Behold my elderH1419 daughterH1323 MerabH4764, her will I giveH5414[H8799] thee to wifeH802: only be thou valiantH1121[H2428] for me, and fightH3898[H8734] the LORD'SH3068 battlesH4421. For SaulH7586 saidH559[H8804], Let not mine handH3027 be upon him, but let the handH3027 of the Philistines be upon himH6430. |
[17]Then Saul said to David, Behold mine eldest daughter Merab, her I will give thee to wife: only be a valiant son unto me, and fight the Lord's battles: for Saul thought, Mine hand shall not be upon him, but the hand of the Philistines shall be upon him. |
| [18]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto SaulH7586, Who am I? and what is my lifeH2416, or my father'sH1 familyH4940 in IsraelH3478, that I should be son in lawH2860 to the kingH4428? |
[18]And David answered Saul, What am I? And what is my life, or the family of my father in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king? |
| [19]But it came to pass at the timeH6256 when MerabH4764 Saul'sH7586 daughterH1323 should have been givenH5414[H8800] to DavidH1732, that she was givenH5414[H8738] unto AdrielH5741 the MeholathiteH4259 to wifeH802. |
[19]Howbeit when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, she was given unto Adriel a Meholathite to wife. |
| [20]And MichalH4324 Saul'sH7586 daughterH1323 lovedH157[H8799] DavidH1732: and they toldH5046[H8686] SaulH7586, and the thingH1697 pleasedH3474[H8799] himH5869. |
[20]Then Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they showed Saul, and the thing pleased him. |
| [21]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799], I will giveH5414[H8799] him her, that she may be a snareH4170 to him, and that the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430 may be against him. Wherefore SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, Thou shalt this dayH3117 be my son in lawH2859[H8691] in the one of the twainH8147. |
[21]Therefore Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain. |
| [22]And SaulH7586 commandedH6680[H8762] his servantsH5650, saying, CommuneH1696[H8761] with DavidH1732 secretlyH3909, and sayH559[H8800], Behold, the kingH4428 hath delightH2654[H8804] in thee, and all his servantsH5650 loveH157[H8804] thee: now therefore be the king'sH4428 son in lawH2859.[H8690] |
[22]And Saul commanded his servants, Speak with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath a favor to thee, and all his servants love thee: be now therefore the king's son in law. |
| [23]And Saul'sH7586 servantsH5650 spakeH1696[H8762] those wordsH1697 in the earsH241 of DavidH1732. And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799], SeemethH5869 it to you a lightH7043[H8738] thing to be a king'sH4428 son in lawH2859[H8692], seeing that I am a poorH7326[H8802] manH376, and lightly esteemedH7034?[H8737] |
[23]And Saul's servants spake these words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man and of small reputation? |
| [24]And the servantsH5650 of SaulH7586 toldH5046[H8686] him, sayingH559[H8800], On this mannerH1697 spakeH1696[H8765] DavidH1732. |
[24]And then Saul's servants brought him word again, saying, Such words spake David. |
| [25]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799], Thus shall ye sayH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, The kingH4428 desirethH2656 not any dowryH4119, but an hundredH3967 foreskinsH6190 of the PhilistinesH6430, to be avengedH5358[H8736] of the king'sH4428 enemiesH341[H8802]. But SaulH7586 thoughtH2803[H8804] to make DavidH1732 fallH5307[H8687] by the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430. |
[25]And Saul said, This wise shall ye say to David, The king desireth no dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies: for Saul thought to make David fall into the hands of the Philistines. |
| [26]And when his servantsH5650 toldH5046[H8686] DavidH1732 these wordsH1697, it pleasedH3474[H8799][H1697][H5869] DavidH1732 well to be the king'sH4428 son in lawH2859[H8692]: and the daysH3117 were not expiredH4390.[H8804] |
[26]And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well, to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired. |
| [27]Wherefore DavidH1732 aroseH6965[H8799] and wentH3212[H8799], he and his menH582, and slewH5221[H8686] of the PhilistinesH6430 two hundredH3967 menH376; and DavidH1732 broughtH935[H8686] their foreskinsH6190, and they gave them in full taleH4390[H8762] to the kingH4428, that he might be the king'sH4428 son in lawH2859[H8692]. And SaulH7586 gaveH5414[H8799] him MichalH4324 his daughterH1323 to wifeH802. |
[27]Afterward David arose with his men, and went and slew of the Philistines two hundred men: and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them wholly to the king that he might be the king's son in law: therefore Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. |
| [28]And SaulH7586 sawH7200[H8799] and knewH3045[H8799] that the LORDH3068 was with DavidH1732, and that MichalH4324 Saul'sH7586 daughterH1323 lovedH157 himH8804. |
[28]Then Saul saw, and understood that the Lord was with David, and that Michal the daughter of Saul loved him. |
| [29]And SaulH7586 was yet the moreH3254[H8686] afraidH3372[H8800] ofH6440 DavidH1732; and SaulH7586 became David'sH1732 enemyH341[H8802] continuallyH3117. |
[29]Then Saul was more and more afraid of David, and Saul became alway David's enemy. |
| [30]Then the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 went forthH3318[H8799]: and it came to pass, afterH1767 they went forthH3318[H8800], that DavidH1732 behaved himself more wiselyH7919[H8804] than all the servantsH5650 of SaulH7586; so that his nameH8034 was muchH3966 set byH3365.[H8799] |
[30]And when the princes of the Philistines went forth, at their going forth David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was much set by. |
