|
[1]And DavidH1732 fledH1272[H8799] from NaiothH5121 in RamahH7414, and cameH935[H8799] and saidH559[H8799] beforeH6440 JonathanH3083, What have I doneH6213[H8804]? what is mine iniquityH5771? and what is my sinH2403 beforeH6440 thy fatherH1, that he seekethH1245[H8764] my lifeH5315? |
[1]And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? What is mine iniquity? And what sin have I committed before thy father, that he seeketh my life? |
[2]And he saidH559[H8799] unto him, God forbidH2486; thou shalt not dieH4191[H8799]: behold, my fatherH1 will doH6213[H8799][H8675][H6213][H8804] nothingH1697 either greatH1419 or smallH6996, but that he will shewH1540[H8799][H241] it me: and why should my fatherH1 hideH5641[H8686] this thing from me? it is not soH1697. |
[2]And he said unto him, God forbid, thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing great nor small, but he will show it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? He will not do it. |
[3]And DavidH1732 swareH7650[H8735] moreover, and saidH559[H8799], Thy fatherH1 certainlyH3045[H8800] knowethH3045[H8804] that I have foundH4672[H8804] graceH2580 in thine eyesH5869; and he saithH559[H8799], Let not JonathanH3083 knowH3045[H8799] this, lest he be grievedH6087[H8735]: but trulyH199 as the LORDH3068 livethH2416, and as thy soulH5315 livethH2416, there is but a stepH6587 between me and deathH4194. |
[3]And David swear again and said, Thy father knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes: therefore he thinketh, Jonathan shall not know it, lest he be sorry: but indeed, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death. |
[4]Then saidH559[H8799] JonathanH3083 unto DavidH1732, Whatsoever thy soulH5315 desirethH559[H8799], I will even doH6213 it for theeH8799. |
[4]Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul requireth, that I will do unto thee. |
[5]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto JonathanH3083, Behold, to morrowH4279 is the new moonH2320, and I should not failH3427[H8800] to sitH3427[H8799] with the kingH4428 at meatH398[H8800]: but let me goH7971[H8765], that I may hideH5641[H8738] myself in the fieldH7704 unto the thirdH7992 day at evenH6153. |
[5]And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the first day of the month, and I should sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the fields unto the third day at even. |
[6]If thy fatherH1 at allH6485[H8800] missH6485[H8799] me, then sayH559[H8804], DavidH1732 earnestlyH7592[H8736] askedH7592[H8738] leave of me that he might runH7323[H8800] to BethlehemH1035 his cityH5892: for there is a yearlyH3117 sacrificeH2077 there for all the familyH4940. |
[6]If thy father make mention of me, then say, David asked leave of me, that he might go to Beth-lehem to his own city: for there is a yearly sacrifice for all that family. |
[7]If he sayH559[H8799] thus, It is wellH2896; thy servantH5650 shall have peaceH7965: but if he be veryH2734[H8800] wrothH2734[H8799], then be sureH3045[H8798] that evilH7451 is determinedH3615 by himH8804. |
[7]And if he say thus, It is well, thy servant shall have peace: but if he be angry, be sure that wickedness is concluded of him. |
[8]Therefore thou shalt dealH6213[H8804] kindlyH2617 with thy servantH5650; for thou hast broughtH935[H8689] thy servantH5650 into a covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 with thee: notwithstanding, if there beH3426 in me iniquityH5771, slayH4191[H8685] me thyself; for why shouldest thou bringH935[H8686] me to thy fatherH1? |
[8]So shalt thou show mercy unto thy servant: for thou hast joined thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee, and if there be in me iniquity, slay thou me: for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father? |
[9]And JonathanH3083 saidH559[H8799], Far be it from theeH2486: for if I knewH3045[H8799] certainlyH3045[H8800] that evilH7451 were determinedH3615[H8804] by my fatherH1 to comeH935[H8800] upon thee, then would not I tellH5046 it theeH8686? |
[9]And Jonathan answered, God keep that from thee: for if I knew that wickedness were concluded of my father to come upon thee, would not I tell it thee? |
[10]Then saidH559[H8799] DavidH1732 to JonathanH3083, Who shall tellH5046[H8686] me? or what if thy fatherH1 answerH6030[H8799] thee roughlyH7186? |
[10]Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? How shall I know, if thy father answer thee cruelly? |
[11]And JonathanH3083 saidH559[H8799] unto DavidH1732, ComeH3212[H8798], and let us go outH3318[H8799] into the fieldH7704. And they went outH3318[H8799] bothH8147 of them into the fieldH7704. |
[11]And Jonathan said to David, Come and let us go out into the field: and they twain went out into the field. |
[12]And JonathanH3083 saidH559[H8799] unto DavidH1732, O LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, when I have soundedH2713[H8799] my fatherH1 about to morrowH4279 any timeH6256, or the thirdH7992 day, and, behold, if there be goodH2895[H8804] toward DavidH1732, and I then sendH7971[H8799] not unto thee, and shewH1540[H8804] it theeH241; |
[12]Then Jonathan said to David, O Lord God of Israel, when I have groped my father's mind tomorrow at this time, or within this three days, and if it be well with David, and I then send not unto thee, and show it thee, |
[13]The LORDH3068 doH6213[H8799] soH3541 and much moreH3254[H8686] to JonathanH3083: but if it pleaseH3190[H8686] my fatherH1 to do thee evilH7451, then I will shewH1540[H8804][H241] it thee, and send thee awayH7971[H8765], that thou mayest goH1980[H8804] in peaceH7965: and the LORDH3068 be with thee, as he hath been with my fatherH1. |
[13]The Lord do so and much more unto Jonathan: but if my father have mind to do thee evil, I will show thee also, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the Lord be with thee as he hath been with my father. |
[14]And thou shalt not only while yetH518 I liveH2416 shewH6213[H8799] me the kindnessH2617 of the LORDH3068, that I dieH4191 notH8799: |
[14]Likewise I require not whiles I live: for I doubt not but thou wilt show me the mercy of the Lord, that I die not. |
[15]But also thou shalt not cut offH3772[H8686] thy kindnessH2617 from my houseH1004 forH5704 everH5769: no, not when the LORDH3068 hath cut offH3772[H8687] the enemiesH341[H8802] of DavidH1732 every oneH376 from the faceH6440 of the earthH127. |
[15]But I require that thou cut not off thy mercy from mine house forever: no, not when the Lord hath destroyed the enemies of David, every one from the earth. |
[16]So JonathanH3083 madeH3772[H8799] a covenant with the houseH1004 of DavidH1732, saying, Let the LORDH3068 even requireH1245[H8765] it at the handH3027 of David'sH1732 enemiesH341.[H8802] |
[16]So Jonathan made a bond with the house of David , saying, Let the Lord require it at the hands of David's enemies. |
[17]And JonathanH3083 caused DavidH1732 to swearH7650[H8687] againH3254[H8686], because he lovedH160 him: for he lovedH157[H8804] him as he lovedH160 his own soulH5315. |
[17]And again Jonathan swear unto David, because he loved him (for he loved him as his own soul) |
[18]Then JonathanH3083 saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, To morrowH4279 is the new moonH2320: and thou shalt be missedH6485[H8738], because thy seatH4186 will be emptyH6485.[H8735] |
[18]Then said Jonathan to him, Tomorrow is the first day of the month: and thou shalt be looked for, for thy place shall be empty. |
[19]And when thou hast stayed three daysH8027[H8765], then thou shalt go downH3381[H8799] quicklyH3966, and comeH935[H8804] to the placeH4725 where thou didst hideH5641[H8738] thyself whenH3117 the businessH4639 was in hand, and shalt remainH3427[H8804] byH681 the stoneH68 EzelH237. |
[19]Therefore thou shalt hide thyself three days, then thou shalt go down quickly and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself, when this matter was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel. |
[20]And I will shootH3384[H8686] threeH7969 arrowsH2671 on the sideH6654 thereof, as though I shotH7971[H8763] at a markH4307. |
[20]And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark. |
[21]And, behold, I will sendH7971[H8799] a ladH5288, saying, GoH3212[H8798], find outH4672[H8798] the arrowsH2671. If I expresslyH559[H8800] sayH559[H8799] unto the ladH5288, Behold, the arrowsH2671 are on this side of thee, takeH3947[H8798] them; then comeH935[H8798] thou: for there is peaceH7965 to thee, and no hurtH1697; as the LORDH3068 livethH2416. |
[21]And after I will send a boy, saying, Go, seek the arrows. If I say unto the boy, See, the arrows are on this side thee, bring them, and come thou: for it is well with thee and no hurt, as the Lord liveth. |
[22]But if I sayH559[H8799] thus unto the young manH5958, Behold, the arrowsH2671 are beyondH1973 thee; go thy wayH3212[H8798]: for the LORDH3068 hath sent thee awayH7971.[H8765] |
[22]But if I say thus unto the boy, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee, go thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away. |
[23]And as touching the matterH1697 which thou and I have spokenH1696[H8765] of, behold, the LORDH3068 be between thee and me forH5704 everH5769. |
[23]As touching the thing which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me forever. |
[24]So DavidH1732 hidH5641[H8735] himself in the fieldH7704: and when the new moonH2320 was come, the kingH4428 sat him downH3427[H8799] to eatH398[H8800] meatH3899. |
[24]So David hid himself in the field: and when the first day of the month came, the king sat to eat meat. |
[25]And the kingH4428 satH3427[H8799] upon his seatH4186, as at other timesH6471, even upon a seatH4186 by the wallH7023: and JonathanH3083 aroseH6965[H8799], and AbnerH74 satH3427[H8799] by Saul'sH7586 sideH6654, and David'sH1732 placeH4725 was emptyH6485.[H8735] |
[25]And the king sat, as at other times upon his seat, even upon his seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, but David's place was empty. |
[26]Nevertheless SaulH7586 spakeH1696[H8765] not any thingH3972 that dayH3117: for he thoughtH559[H8804], Something hath befallenH4745 him, he is notH1115 cleanH2889; surely he is not cleanH2889. |
[26]And Saul said nothing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, though he were clean, or else because he was not purified. |
[27]And it came to pass on the morrowH4283, which was the secondH8145 day of the monthH2320, that David'sH1732 placeH4725 was emptyH6485[H8735]: and SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] unto JonathanH3083 his sonH1121, Wherefore comethH935[H8804] not the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 to meatH3899, neither yesterdayH8543, nor to dayH3117? |
[27]But on the morrow which was the second day of the month, David's place was empty again: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday nor today? |
[28]And JonathanH3083 answeredH6030[H8799] SaulH7586, DavidH1732 earnestlyH7592[H8736] askedH7592[H8738] leave of meH5978 to go to BethlehemH1035: |
[28]And Jonathan answered unto Saul, David required of me, that he might go to Beth-lehem. |
[29]And he saidH559[H8799], Let me goH7971[H8761], I pray thee; for our familyH4940 hath a sacrificeH2077 in the cityH5892; and my brotherH251, he hath commandedH6680[H8765] me to be there: and now, if I have foundH4672[H8804] favourH2580 in thine eyesH5869, let me get awayH4422[H8735], I pray thee, and seeH7200[H8799] my brethrenH251. Therefore he comethH935[H8804] not unto the king'sH4428 tableH7979. |
[29]For he said, Let me go, I pray thee: for our family offereth a sacrifice in the city, and my brother hath sent for me: therefore now if I have found favor in thine eyes, let me go, I pray thee, and see my brethren: this is the cause that he cometh not unto the king's table. |
[30]Then Saul'sH7586 angerH639 was kindledH2734[H8799] against JonathanH3083, and he saidH559[H8799] unto him, Thou sonH1121 of the perverseH5753[H8737] rebelliousH4780 woman, do not I knowH3045[H8804] that thou hast chosenH977[H8802] the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 to thine own confusionH1322, and unto the confusionH1322 of thy mother'sH517 nakednessH6172? |
[30]Then was Saul angry with Jonathan, and said unto him, Thou son of the wicked rebellious woman, do not I know, that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thy confusion and to the confusion and shame of thy mother? |
[31]For as long asH3117 the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 livethH2425[H8804] upon the groundH127, thou shalt not be establishedH3559[H8735], nor thy kingdomH4438. Wherefore now sendH7971[H8798] and fetchH3947[H8798] him unto me, for he shall surely dieH1121.[H4194] |
[31]For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the earth, thou shalt not be stablished, nor thy kingdom: wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. |
[32]And JonathanH3083 answeredH6030[H8799] SaulH7586 his fatherH1, and saidH559[H8799] unto him, Wherefore shall he be slainH4191[H8714]? what hath he doneH6213?[H8804] |
[32]And Jonathan answered unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he die? What hath he done? |
[33]And SaulH7586 castH2904[H8686] a javelinH2595 at him to smiteH5221[H8687] him: whereby JonathanH3083 knewH3045[H8799] that it was determinedH3617 of his fatherH1 to slayH4191[H8687] DavidH1732. |
[33]And Saul cast a spear at him to hit him, whereby Jonathan knew, that it was determined of his father to slay David. |
[34]So JonathanH3083 aroseH6965[H8799] from the tableH7979 in fierceH2750 angerH639, and did eatH398[H8804] no meatH3899 the secondH8145 dayH3117 of the monthH2320: for he was grievedH6087[H8738] for DavidH1732, because his fatherH1 had done him shameH3637.[H8689] |
[34]So Jonathan arose from the table in a great anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was sorry for David, and because his father had reviled him. |
[35]And it came to pass in the morningH1242, that JonathanH3083 went outH3318[H8799] into the fieldH7704 at the time appointedH4150 with DavidH1732, and a littleH6996 lad with himH5288. |
[35]On the next morning therefore Jonathan then went out into the field, at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him. |
[36]And he saidH559[H8799] unto his ladH5288, RunH7323[H8798], find outH4672[H8798] now the arrowsH2671 which I shootH3384[H8688]. And as the ladH5288 ranH7323[H8801], he shotH3384[H8804] an arrowH2678 beyondH5674 himH8687. |
[36]And he said unto his boy, Run now, seek the arrows which I shoot, and as the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. |
[37]And when the ladH5288 was comeH935[H8799] to the placeH4725 of the arrowH2678 which JonathanH3083 had shotH3384[H8804], JonathanH3083 criedH7121[H8799] afterH310 the ladH5288, and saidH559[H8799], Is not the arrowH2678 beyond theeH1973? |
[37]And when the boy was come to the place where the arrow was that Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee? |
[38]And JonathanH3083 criedH7121[H8799] afterH310 the ladH5288, Make speedH4120, hasteH2363[H8798], stayH5975[H8799] not. And Jonathan'sH3083 ladH5288 gathered upH3950[H8762] the arrowsH2671[H8675][H2678], and cameH935[H8799] to his masterH113. |
[38]And Jonathan cried after the boy, Make speed, haste and stand not still: and Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master, |
[39]But the ladH5288 knewH3045[H8804] not any thingH3972: only JonathanH3083 and DavidH1732 knewH3045[H8804] the matterH1697. |
[39]But the boy knew nothing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter. |
[40]And JonathanH3083 gaveH5414[H8799] his artilleryH3627 unto his ladH5288, and saidH559[H8799] unto him, GoH3212[H8798], carryH935[H8685] them to the cityH5892. |
[40]Then Jonathan gave his bow and arrows unto the boy that was with him, and said unto him, Go, carry them into the city. |
[41]And as soon as the ladH5288 was goneH935[H8802], DavidH1732 aroseH6965[H8804] out of a place towardH681 the southH5045, and fellH5307[H8799] on his faceH639 to the groundH776, and bowedH7812[H8691] himself threeH7969 timesH6471: and they kissedH5401[H8799] oneH376 anotherH7453, and weptH1058[H8799] oneH376 with anotherH7453, until DavidH1732 exceededH1431.[H8689] |
[41]As soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of a place that was toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept both twain, till David exceeded. |
[42]And JonathanH3083 saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, GoH3212[H8798] in peaceH7965, forasmuch as we have swornH7650[H8738] bothH8147 of us in the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068, sayingH559[H8800], The LORDH3068 be between me and thee, and between my seedH2233 and thy seedH2233 forH5704 everH5769. And he aroseH6965[H8799] and departedH3212[H8799]: and JonathanH3083 wentH935[H8802] into the cityH5892. |
[42]Therefore Jonathan said to David, Go in peace: that which we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and between thy seed, let it stand forever. (20:43) And he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city. |
