[1]In the secondH8147 yearH8141 of JoashH3101 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3099 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 reignedH4427[H8804] AmaziahH558 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063. [1]In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah.
[2]He was twentyH6242 and fiveH2568 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reignH4427[H8800], and reignedH4427[H8804] twentyH6242 and nineH8672 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389. And his mother'sH517 nameH8034 was JehoaddanH3086 of JerusalemH3389. [2]He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
[3]And he didH6213[H8799] that which was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068, yetH7535 not like DavidH1732 his fatherH1: he didH6213[H8804] according to all things as JoashH3101 his fatherH1 didH6213.[H8804] [3]And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did.
[4]Howbeit the high placesH1116 were not taken awayH5493[H8804]: as yetH5750 the peopleH5971 did sacrificeH2076[H8764] and burnt incenseH6999[H8764] on the high placesH1116. [4]But, the high places were not taken away: as yet the people sacrificed, and burnt incense on the high places.
[5]And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdomH4467 was confirmedH2388[H8804] in his handH3027, that he slewH5221[H8686] his servantsH5650 which had slainH5221[H8688] the kingH4428 his fatherH1. [5]And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain the king his father.
[6]But the childrenH1121 of the murderersH5221[H8688] he slewH4191[H8689] not: according unto that which is writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of the lawH8451 of MosesH4872, wherein the LORDH3068 commandedH6680[H8765], sayingH559[H8800], The fathersH1 shall not be put to deathH4191[H8714] for the childrenH1121, nor the childrenH1121 be put to deathH4191[H8714] for the fathersH1; but every manH376 shall be put to deathH4191[H8799] for his own sinH2399. [6]But the children of the murderers he slew not: according to that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, in which the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
[7]He slewH5221[H8689] of EdomH123 in the valleyH1516 of saltH4417 tenH6235 thousandH505, and tookH8610[H8804] SelahH5554 by warH4421, and calledH7121[H8799] the nameH8034 of it JoktheelH3371 unto this dayH3117. [7]He slew of Edom in the valley of Salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel to this day.
[8]Then AmaziahH558 sentH7971[H8804] messengersH4397 to JehoashH3060, the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 sonH1121 of JehuH3058, kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559[H8800], ComeH3212[H8798], let us lookH7200[H8691] one another in the faceH6440. [8]Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.
[9]And JehoashH3060 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 sentH7971[H8799] to AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, sayingH559[H8800], The thistleH2336 that was in LebanonH3844 sentH7971[H8804] to the cedarH730 that was in LebanonH3844, sayingH559[H8800], GiveH5414[H8798] thy daughterH1323 to my sonH1121 to wifeH802: and there passedH5674[H8799] by a wildH7704 beastH2416 that was in LebanonH3844, and trode downH7429[H8799] the thistleH2336. [9]And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle.
[10]Thou hast indeedH5221[H8687] smittenH5221[H8689] EdomH123, and thine heartH3820 hath lifted thee upH5375[H8804]: gloryH3513[H8734] of this, and tarryH3427[H8798] at homeH1004: for why shouldest thou meddleH1624[H8691] to thy hurtH7451, that thou shouldest fallH5307[H8804], even thou, and Judah with theeH3063? [10]Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thy heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why shouldst thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldst fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
[11]But AmaziahH558 would not hearH8085[H8804]. Therefore JehoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 went upH5927[H8799]; and he and AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 lookedH7200[H8691] one another in the faceH6440 at BethshemeshH1053, which belongeth to JudahH3063. [11]But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up: and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
[12]And JudahH3063 was put to the worseH5062[H8735] beforeH6440 IsraelH3478; and they fledH5127[H8799] every manH376 to their tentsH168. [12]And Judah was defeated before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.
[13]And JehoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 tookH8610[H8804] AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, the sonH1121 of JehoashH3060 the sonH1121 of AhaziahH274, at BethshemeshH1053, and cameH935[H8799] to JerusalemH3389, and brake downH6555[H8799] the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389 from the gateH8179 of EphraimH669 unto the cornerH6438 gateH8179, fourH702 hundredH3967 cubitsH520. [13]And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
[14]And he tookH3947[H8804] all the goldH2091 and silverH3701, and all the vesselsH3627 that were foundH4672[H8737] in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and in the treasuresH214 of the king'sH4428 houseH1004, and hostagesH1121[H8594], and returnedH7725[H8799] to SamariaH8111. [14]And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.
[15]Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JehoashH3060 which he didH6213[H8804], and his mightH1369, and how he foughtH3898[H8738] with AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, are they not writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697[H3117] of the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478? [15]Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
[16]And JehoashH3060 sleptH7901[H8799] with his fathersH1, and was buriedH6912[H8735] in SamariaH8111 with the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478; and JeroboamH3379 his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his steadH8799. [16]And Jehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.
[17]And AmaziahH558 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 livedH2421[H8799] afterH310 the deathH4194 of JehoashH3060 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 fifteenH2568[H6240] yearsH8141. [17]And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
[18]And the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of AmaziahH558, are they not writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697[H3117] of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063? [18]And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
[19]Now they madeH7194[H8799] a conspiracyH7195 against him in JerusalemH3389: and he fledH5127[H8799] to LachishH3923; but they sentH7971[H8799] afterH310 him to LachishH3923, and slewH4191 him thereH8686. [19]Now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.
[20]And they broughtH5375[H8799] him on horsesH5483: and he was buriedH6912[H8735] at JerusalemH3389 with his fathersH1 in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732. [20]And they brought him on horses: and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.
[21]And all the peopleH5971 of JudahH3063 tookH3947[H8799] AzariahH5838, which was sixteenH8337[H6240] yearsH8141 oldH1121, and made him kingH4427[H8686] instead of his fatherH1 AmaziahH558. [21]And all the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah.
[22]He builtH1129[H8804] ElathH359, and restoredH7725[H8686] it to JudahH3063, afterH310 that the kingH4428 sleptH7901[H8800] with his fathersH1. [22]He built Elath, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
[23]In the fifteenthH2568[H6240][H8141] yearH8141 of AmaziahH558 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 began to reignH4427[H8804] in SamariaH8111, and reigned fortyH705 and oneH259 yearsH8141. [23]In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years.
[24]And he didH6213[H8799] that which was evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068: he departedH5493[H8804] not from all the sinsH2403 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, who made IsraelH3478 to sinH2398.[H8689] [24]And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
[25]He restoredH7725[H8689] the coastH1366 of IsraelH3478 from the enteringH935[H8800] of HamathH2574 unto the seaH3220 of the plainH6160, according to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, which he spakeH1696[H8765] by the handH3027 of his servantH5650 JonahH3124, the sonH1121 of AmittaiH573, the prophetH5030, which was of GathhepherH1662. [25]He restored the border of Israel from the entering of Hamath to the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spoke by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gath-hepher.
[26]For the LORDH3068 sawH7200[H8804] the afflictionH6040 of IsraelH3478, that it was veryH3966 bitterH4784[H8802]: for there was notH657 any shut upH6113[H8803], nor any leftH5800[H8803], nor any helperH5826[H8802] for IsraelH3478. [26]For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel.
[27]And the LORDH3068 saidH1696[H8765] not that he would blot outH4229[H8800] the nameH8034 of IsraelH3478 from under heavenH8064: but he savedH3467[H8686] them by the handH3027 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101. [27]And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
[28]Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JeroboamH3379, and all that he didH6213[H8804], and his mightH1369, how he warredH3898[H8738], and how he recoveredH7725[H8689] DamascusH1834, and HamathH2574, which belonged to JudahH3063, for IsraelH3478, are they not writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697[H3117] of the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478? [28]Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
[29]And JeroboamH3379 sleptH7901[H8799] with his fathersH1, even with the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478; and ZachariahH2148 his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his steadH8799. [29]And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead.
