YLT
[1]Now JehoramH3088 the sonH1121 of AhabH256 began to reignH4427[H8804] over IsraelH3478 in SamariaH8111 the eighteenthH8083[H6240] yearH8141 of JehoshaphatH3092 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, and reignedH4427[H8799] twelveH8147[H6240] yearsH8141. [1]And Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,
[2]And he wroughtH6213[H8799] evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068; but not like his fatherH1, and like his motherH517: for he put awayH5493[H8686] the imageH4676 of BaalH1168 that his fatherH1 had madeH6213.[H8804] [2]and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;
[3]Nevertheless he cleavedH1692[H8804] unto the sinsH2403 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, which made IsraelH3478 to sinH2398[H8689]; he departedH5493 not therefromH8804. [3]only to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.
[4]And MeshaH4338 kingH4428 of MoabH4124 was a sheepmasterH5349, and renderedH7725[H8689] unto the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 an hundredH3967 thousandH505 lambsH3733, and an hundredH3967 thousandH505 ramsH352, with the woolH6785. [4]And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, [with] wool,
[5]But it came to pass, when AhabH256 was deadH4194, that the kingH4428 of MoabH4124 rebelledH6586[H8799] against the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478. [5]and it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.
[6]And kingH4428 JehoramH3088 went outH3318[H8799] of SamariaH8111 the same timeH3117, and numberedH6485[H8799] all IsraelH3478. [6]And king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,
[7]And he wentH3212[H8799] and sentH7971[H8799] to JehoshaphatH3092 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063, sayingH559[H8800], The kingH4428 of MoabH4124 hath rebelledH6586[H8804] against me: wilt thou goH3212[H8799] with me against MoabH4124 to battleH4421? And he saidH559[H8799], I will go upH5927[H8799]: I am as thou art, my peopleH5971 as thy peopleH5971, and my horsesH5483 as thy horsesH5483. [7]and goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?' and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.
[8]And he saidH559[H8799], Which wayH1870 shall we go upH5927[H8799]? And he answeredH559[H8799], The wayH1870 through the wildernessH4057 of EdomH123. [8]And he saith, `Where [is] this -- the way we go up?' and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.'
[9]So the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH3212[H8799], and the kingH4428 of JudahH3063, and the kingH4428 of EdomH123: and they fetched a compassH5437[H8799] of sevenH7651 days'H3117 journeyH1870: and there was no waterH4325 for the hostH4264, and for the cattleH929 that followed themH7272. [9]And the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that [are] at their feet,
[10]And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8799], AlasH162! that the LORDH3068 hath calledH7121 these threeH7969 kingsH4428 togetherH7121[H8804], to deliverH5414[H8800] them into the handH3027 of MoabH4124! [10]and the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.'
[11]But JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559[H8799], Is there not here a prophetH5030 of the LORDH3068, that we may enquireH1875[H8799] of the LORDH3068 by him? And oneH259 of the kingH4428 of Israel'sH3478 servantsH5650 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], Here is ElishaH477 the sonH1121 of ShaphatH8202, which pouredH3332[H8804] waterH4325 on the handsH3027 of ElijahH452. [11]And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?' And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here [is] Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'
[12]And JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559[H8799], The wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 isH3426 with him. So the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 and JehoshaphatH3092 and the kingH4428 of EdomH123 went downH3381 to himH8799. [12]And Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;' and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.
[13]And ElishaH477 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, What have I to do with thee? getH3212[H8798] thee to the prophetsH5030 of thy fatherH1, and to the prophetsH5030 of thy motherH517. And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8799] unto him, Nay: for the LORDH3068 hath calledH7121 these threeH7969 kingsH4428 togetherH7121[H8804], to deliverH5414[H8800] them into the handH3027 of MoabH4124. [13]And Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;' and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.'
[14]And ElishaH477 saidH559[H8799], As the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 livethH2416, beforeH6440 whom I standH5975[H8804], surely, were it not thatH3884 I regardH5375[H8802] the presenceH6440 of JehoshaphatH3092 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063, I would not lookH5027[H8686] toward thee, nor seeH7200 theeH8799. [14]And Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;
[15]But now bringH3947[H8798] me a minstrelH5059[H8764]. And it came to pass, when the minstrelH5059[H8764] playedH5059[H8763], that the handH3027 of the LORD came upon himH3068. [15]and now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,
[16]And he saidH559[H8799], Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068, MakeH6213[H8800] this valleyH5158 full of ditchesH1356. [16]and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;
[17]For thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068, Ye shall not seeH7200[H8799] windH7307, neither shall ye seeH7200[H8799] rainH1653; yet that valleyH5158 shall be filledH4390[H8735] with waterH4325, that ye may drinkH8354[H8804], both ye, and your cattleH4735, and your beastsH929. [17]for thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
[18]And this is but a light thingH7043[H8738] in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068: he will deliverH5414[H8804] the MoabitesH4124 also into your handH3027. [18]`And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,
[19]And ye shall smiteH5221[H8689] every fencedH4013 cityH5892, and every choiceH4004 cityH5892, and shall fellH5307[H8686] every goodH2896 treeH6086, and stopH5640[H8799] all wellsH4599 of waterH4325, and marH3510[H8686] every goodH2896 pieceH2513 of land with stonesH68. [19]and ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.'
[20]And it came to pass in the morningH1242, when the meat offeringH4503 was offeredH5927[H8800], that, behold, there cameH935[H8802] waterH4325 by the wayH1870 of EdomH123, and the countryH776 was filledH4390[H8735] with waterH4325. [20]And it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the [morning]-present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,
[21]And when all the MoabitesH4124 heardH8085[H8804] that the kingsH4428 were come upH5927[H8804] to fightH3898[H8736] against them, they gatheredH6817[H8735] all that were able to putH2296[H8802] on armourH2290, and upwardH4605, and stoodH5975[H8799] in the borderH1366. [21]and all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.
[22]And they rose up earlyH7925[H8686] in the morningH1242, and the sunH8121 shoneH2224[H8804] upon the waterH4325, and the MoabitesH4124 sawH7200[H8799] the waterH4325 on the other sideH5048 as redH122 as bloodH1818: [22]And they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,
[23]And they saidH559[H8799], This is bloodH1818: the kingsH4428 are surelyH2717[H8715] slainH2717[H8738], and they have smittenH5221[H8686] oneH376 anotherH7453: now therefore, MoabH4124, to the spoilH7998. [23]and say, `Blood this [is]; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!'
[24]And when they cameH935[H8799] to the campH4264 of IsraelH3478, the IsraelitesH3478 rose upH6965[H8799] and smoteH5221[H8686] the MoabitesH4124, so that they fledH5127[H8799] beforeH6440 them: but they went forwardH5221[H8686] smitingH5221[H8687] the Moabites, even in their countryH4124. [24]And they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,
[25]And they beat downH2040[H8799] the citiesH5892, and on every goodH2896 pieceH2513 of land castH7993[H8686] every manH376 his stoneH68, and filledH4390[H8765] it; and they stoppedH5640[H8799] all the wellsH4599 of waterH4325, and felledH5307[H8686] all the goodH2896 treesH6086: only in KirharasethH7025 leftH7604[H8689] they the stonesH68 thereof; howbeit the slingersH7051 went aboutH5437[H8799] it, and smoteH5221 itH8686. [25]and the cities they break down, and [on] every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.
[26]And when the kingH4428 of MoabH4124 sawH7200[H8799] that the battleH4421 was too soreH2388[H8804] for him, he tookH3947[H8799] with him sevenH7651 hundredH3967 menH376 that drewH8025[H8802] swordsH2719, to break throughH1234[H8687] even unto the kingH4428 of EdomH123: but they couldH3201 notH8804. [26]And the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,
[27]Then he tookH3947[H8799] his eldestH1060 sonH1121 that should have reignedH4427[H8799] in his stead, and offeredH5927[H8686] him for a burnt offeringH5930 upon the wallH2346. And there was greatH1419 indignationH7110 against IsraelH3478: and they departedH5265[H8799] from him, and returnedH7725[H8799] to their own landH776. [27]and he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.
