[1]Moreover AhithophelH302 saidH559[H8799] unto AbsalomH53, Let me now choose outH977[H8799] twelveH8147[H6240] thousandH505 menH376, and I will ariseH6965[H8799] and pursueH7291[H8799] afterH310 DavidH1732 this nightH3915: |
[1]Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, Let me choose out now twelve thousand men, and I will up and follow after David this night, |
[2]And I will comeH935[H8799] upon him while he is wearyH3023 and weakH7504 handedH3027, and will make him afraidH2729[H8689]: and all the peopleH5971 that are with him shall fleeH5127[H8804]; and I will smiteH5221[H8689] the king onlyH4428: |
[2]And I will come upon him: for he is weary, and weak handed: so I will fear him, and all the people that are with him, shall flee, and I will smite the king only, |
[3]And I will bring backH7725[H8686] all the peopleH5971 unto thee: the manH376 whom thou seekestH1245[H8764] is as if all returnedH7725[H8800]: so all the peopleH5971 shall be in peaceH7965. |
[3]And I will bring again all the people unto thee, and when all shall return, (the man whom thou seekest being slain) all the people shall be in peace. |
[4]And the sayingH1697 pleasedH3474[H8799] AbsalomH53 wellH5869, and all the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478. |
[4]And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. |
[5]Then saidH559[H8799] AbsalomH53, CallH7121[H8798] now HushaiH2365 the ArchiteH757 also, and let us hearH8085[H8799] likewise what he saithH6310. |
[5]Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. |
[6]And when HushaiH2365 was comeH935[H8799] to AbsalomH53, AbsalomH53 spakeH559[H8799] unto him, sayingH559[H8800], AhithophelH302 hath spokenH1696[H8765] after this mannerH1697: shall we doH6213[H8799] after his sayingH1697? if not; speakH1696 thouH8761. |
[6]So when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken thus: shall we do after his saying, or no? Tell thou. |
[7]And HushaiH2365 saidH559[H8799] unto AbsalomH53, The counselH6098 that AhithophelH302 hath givenH3289[H8804] is not goodH2896 at this timeH6471. |
[7]Hushai then answered unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given, is not good at this time. |
[8]For, saidH559[H8799] HushaiH2365, thou knowestH3045[H8804] thy fatherH1 and his menH582, that they be mighty menH1368, and they be chafedH4751 in their mindsH5315, as a bearH1677 robbedH7909 of her whelps in the fieldH7704: and thy fatherH1 is a manH376 of warH4421, and will not lodgeH3885[H8799] with the peopleH5971. |
[8]For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father, and his men, that they be strong men, and are chafed in mind as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: also thy father is a valiant warrior, and will not lodge with the people. |
[9]Behold, he is hidH2244[H8737] now in someH259 pitH6354, or in someH259 other placeH4725: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrownH5307[H8800] at the firstH8462, that whosoeverH8085[H8802] hearethH8085[H8804] it will sayH559[H8804], There is a slaughterH4046 among the peopleH5971 that followH310 AbsalomH53. |
[9]Behold, he is hid now in some cave, or in some place: and though some of them be overthrown at the first, yet the people shall hear, and say, The people that follow Absalom, be overthrown. |
[10]And he also that is valiantH1121[H2428], whose heartH3820 is as the heartH3820 of a lionH738, shall utterlyH4549[H8736] meltH4549[H8735]: for all IsraelH3478 knowethH3045[H8802] that thy fatherH1 is a mighty manH1368, and they which be with him are valiantH2428 menH1121. |
[10]Then he also that is valiant whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall shrink and faint: for all Israel knoweth, that thy father is valiant, and they which be with him, stout men. |
[11]Therefore I counselH3289[H8804] that all IsraelH3478 be generallyH622[H8736] gatheredH622[H8735] unto thee, from DanH1835 even to BeershebaH884, as the sandH2344 that is by the seaH3220 for multitudeH7230; and that thou goH1980[H8802] to battleH7128 in thine own personH6440. |
[11]Therefore my counsel is, that all Israel be gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba as the sand of the sea in number, and that thou go to battle in thine own person. |
[12]So shall we comeH935[H8804] upon him in someH259 placeH4725 where he shall be foundH4672[H8738], and we will lightH5168 upon him as the dewH2919 fallethH5307[H8799] on the groundH127: and of him and of all the menH582 that are with him there shall not be leftH3498[H8738] so much asH1571 oneH259. |
[12]So shall we come upon him in some place, where we shall find him, and we will upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of all the men that are with him, we will not leave him one. |
[13]Moreover, ifH518 he be gottenH622[H8735] into a cityH5892, then shall all IsraelH3478 bringH5375[H8689] ropesH2256 to that cityH5892, and we will drawH5498[H8804] it into the riverH5158, until there be not oneH1571 small stoneH6872 foundH4672 thereH8738. |
[13]Moreover if he be gotten into a city, then shall all the men of Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. |
[14]And AbsalomH53 and all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8799], The counselH6098 of HushaiH2365 the ArchiteH757 is betterH2896 than the counselH6098 of AhithophelH302. For the LORDH3068 had appointedH6680[H8765] to defeatH6565[H8687] the goodH2896 counselH6098 of AhithophelH302, to the intentH5668 that the LORDH3068 might bringH935[H8687] evilH7451 upon AbsalomH53. |
[14]Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better, than the counsel of Ahithophel: for the Lord had determined to destroy the good counsel of Ahithophel, that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom. |
[15]Then saidH559[H8799] HushaiH2365 unto ZadokH6659 and to AbiatharH54 the priestsH3548, Thus and thus did AhithophelH302 counselH3289[H8804] AbsalomH53 and the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478; and thus and thus have I counselledH3289.[H8804] |
[15]Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Of this and that manner did Ahithophel and the elders of Israel counsel Absalom: and thus and thus have I counseled. |
[16]Now therefore sendH7971[H8798] quicklyH4120, and tellH5046[H8685] DavidH1732, sayingH559[H8800], LodgeH3885[H8799] not this nightH3915 in the plainsH6160[H8675][H5679] of the wildernessH4057, but speedilyH5674[H8800] pass overH5674[H8799]; lest the kingH4428 be swallowed upH1104[H8792], and all the people that are with himH5971. |
[16]Now therefore send quickly, and show David, saying, Tarry not this night in the fields of the wilderness, but rather get thee over, lest the king be devoured and all the people that are with him. |
[17]Now JonathanH3083 and AhimaazH290 stayedH5975[H8802] by EnrogelH5883; for they mightH3201[H8799] not be seenH7200[H8736] to comeH935[H8800] into the cityH5892: and a wenchH8198 wentH1980[H8804] and toldH5046[H8689] them; and they wentH3212[H8799] and toldH5046[H8689] kingH4428 DavidH1732. |
[17]Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz abode by En-rogel: (for they might not be seen to come into the city) and a maid went, and told them, and they went and showed king David. |
[18]Nevertheless a ladH5288 sawH7200[H8799] them, and toldH5046[H8686] AbsalomH53: but they wentH3212[H8799] bothH8147 of them away quicklyH4120, and cameH935[H8799] to a man'sH376 houseH1004 in BahurimH980, which had a wellH875 in his courtH2691; whitherH8033 they went downH3381.[H8799] |
[18]Nevertheless a young man saw them, and told it to Absalom. therefore they both departed quickly, and came to a man's house in Bahurim, who had a well in his court, into the which they went down. |
[19]And the womanH802 tookH3947[H8799] and spreadH6566[H8799] a coveringH4539 over the well'sH875 mouthH6440, and spreadH7849[H8799] ground cornH7383 thereon; and the thingH1697 was not knownH3045.[H8738] |
[19]And the wife took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and spread ground corn thereon, that the thing should not be known. |
[20]And when Absalom'sH53 servantsH5650 cameH935[H8799] to the womanH802 to the houseH1004, they saidH559[H8799], Where is AhimaazH290 and JonathanH3083? And the womanH802 saidH559[H8799] unto them, They be gone overH5674[H8804] the brookH4323 of waterH4325. And when they had soughtH1245[H8762] and could not findH4672[H8804] them, they returnedH7725[H8799] to JerusalemH3389. |
[20]And when Absalom's servants came to the wife into the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman answered them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought them, and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. |
[21]And it came to pass, afterH310 they were departedH3212[H8800], that they came upH5927[H8799] out of the wellH875, and wentH3212[H8799] and toldH5046[H8686] kingH4428 DavidH1732, and saidH559[H8799] unto DavidH1732, AriseH6965[H8798], and pass quicklyH4120 overH5674[H8798] the waterH4325: for thus hath AhithophelH302 counselledH3289 against youH8804. |
[21]And as soon as they were departed, the other came out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto him, Up, and get you quickly over the water: for such counsel hath Ahithophel given against you. |
[22]Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965[H8799], and all the peopleH5971 that were with him, and they passed overH5674[H8799] JordanH3383: by the morningH1242 lightH216 there lackedH5737[H8738] not oneH259 of them that was not gone overH5674[H8804] JordanH3383. |
[22]Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they went over Jordan until the dawning of the day, so that there lacked not one of them, that was not come over Jordan. |
[23]And when AhithophelH302 sawH7200[H8804] that his counselH6098 was not followedH6213[H8738], he saddledH2280[H8799] his assH2543, and aroseH6965[H8799], and gat him homeH3212[H8799] to his houseH1004, to his cityH5892, and put his householdH1004 in orderH6680[H8762], and hangedH2614[H8735] himself, and diedH4191[H8799], and was buriedH6912[H8735] in the sepulchreH6913 of his fatherH1. |
[23]Now when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and he went home unto his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in his father's grave. |
[24]Then DavidH1732 cameH935[H8804] to MahanaimH4266. And AbsalomH53 passed overH5674[H8804] JordanH3383, he and all the menH376 of Israel with himH3478. |
[24]Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he, and all the men of Israel with him. |
[25]And AbsalomH53 madeH7760[H8804] AmasaH6021 captain of the hostH6635 instead of JoabH3097: which AmasaH6021 was a man'sH376 sonH1121, whose nameH8034 was IthraH3501 an IsraeliteH3481, that went inH935[H8804] to AbigailH26 the daughterH1323 of NahashH5176, sisterH269 to ZeruiahH6870 Joab'sH3097 motherH517. |
[25]And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host in the stead of Joab: which Amasa was a man's son named Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother. |
[26]So IsraelH3478 and AbsalomH53 pitchedH2583[H8799] in the landH776 of GileadH1568. |
[26]So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead. |
[27]And it came to pass, when DavidH1732 was comeH935[H8800] to MahanaimH4266, that ShobiH7629 the sonH1121 of NahashH5176 of RabbahH7237 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and MachirH4353 the sonH1121 of AmmielH5988 of LodebarH3810, and BarzillaiH1271 the GileaditeH1569 of RogelimH7274, |
[27]And when David was come to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash out of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel out of Lodebar, and Barzelai the Gileadite out of Rogel |
[28]BroughtH5066[H8689] bedsH4904, and basonsH5592, and earthenH3335[H8802] vesselsH3627, and wheatH2406, and barleyH8184, and flourH7058, and parchedH7039 corn, and beansH6321, and lentilesH5742, and parched pulseH7039, |
[28]Brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched corn. |
[29]And honeyH1706, and butterH2529, and sheepH6629, and cheeseH8194 of kineH1241, for DavidH1732, and for the peopleH5971 that were with him, to eatH398[H8800]: for they saidH559[H8804], The peopleH5971 is hungryH7457, and wearyH5889, and thirstyH6771, in the wildernessH4057. |
[29]And they brought honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine for David and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty in the wilderness. |
