And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto the peopleH5971, I will surelyH3318[H8800] go forthH3318[H8799] with you myself alsoH589. |
[2]And David sent forth the third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and the third part under the hand of Abishai Joab's brother the son of Zeruiah: and the other third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. and the king said unto the people, I will go with you myself also. |

[3]But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not regard us, neither will they pass for us, though half of us were slain: but thou art now worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succor us out of the city. |

[4]Then the king said unto them, What seemeth you best, that I will do. So the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands. |
| [5]And the kingH4428 commandedH6680[H8762] JoabH3097 and AbishaiH52 and IttaiH863, sayingH559[H8800], Deal gentlyH328 for my sake with the young manH5288, even with AbsalomH53. And all the peopleH5971 heardH8085[H8804] when the kingH4428 gave all the captainsH8269 chargeH6680[H8763] concerningH1697 AbsalomH53. |
[5]And the king commanded Joab and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Entreat the young man Absalom gently for my sake. and all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom. |
| [6]So the peopleH5971 went outH3318[H8799] into the fieldH7704 againstH7125[H8800] IsraelH3478: and the battleH4421 was in the woodH3293 of EphraimH669; |
[6]So the people went out into the field to meet Israel, and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim: |
| [7]Where the peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478 were slainH5062[H8735] beforeH6440 the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732, and there was there a greatH1419 slaughterH4046 that dayH3117 of twentyH6242 thousand menH505. |
[7]Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David: so there was a great slaughter that day, even of twenty thousand. |
| [8]For the battleH4421 was there scatteredH6327[H8737] over the faceH6440 of all the countryH776: and the woodH3293 devouredH398[H8800] moreH7235[H8686] peopleH5971 that dayH3117 than the swordH2719 devouredH398.[H8804] |
[8]For the battle was scattered over all the country: and the wood devoured much more people that day, than did the sword. |
| [9]And AbsalomH53 metH7122[H8735] the servantsH6440[H5650] of DavidH1732. And AbsalomH53 rodeH7392[H8802] upon a muleH6505, and the muleH6505 wentH935[H8799] under the thick boughsH7730 of a greatH1419 oakH424, and his headH7218 caught holdH2388[H8799] of the oakH424, and he was taken upH5414[H8714] between the heavenH8064 and the earthH776; and the muleH6505 that was under him went awayH5674.[H8804] |
[9]Now Absalom met the servants of David, and Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule came under a great thick oak: and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth: and the mule that was under him went away. |
| [10]And a certainH259 manH376 sawH7200[H8799] it, and toldH5046[H8686] JoabH3097, and saidH559[H8799], Behold, I sawH7200[H8804] AbsalomH53 hangedH8518[H8803] in an oakH424. |
[10]And one that saw it, told Joab, saying, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. |
| [11]And JoabH3097 saidH559[H8799] unto the manH376 that toldH5046[H8688] him, And, behold, thou sawestH7200[H8804] him, and why didst thou not smiteH5221[H8689] him there to the groundH776? and I would have givenH5414[H8800] thee tenH6235 shekels of silverH3701, and aH259 girdleH2290. |
[11]Then Joab said unto the man that told him, And hast thou indeed seen? Why then didst thou not there smite him to the ground, and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle? |
| [12]And the manH376 saidH559[H8799] unto JoabH3097, ThoughH3863 I should receiveH8254[H8802] a thousandH505 shekels of silverH3701 in mine handH3709, yet would I not put forthH7971[H8799] mine handH3027 against the king'sH4428 sonH1121: for in our hearingH241 the kingH4428 chargedH6680[H8765] thee and AbishaiH52 and IttaiH863, sayingH559[H8800], BewareH8104[H8798] that none touch the young manH5288 AbsalomH53. |
[12]Then the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not lay mine hand upon the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Beware, lest any touch the young man Absalom. |
| [13]OtherwiseH176 I should have wroughtH6213[H8804] falsehoodH8267 against mine own lifeH5315: for there is no matterH1697 hidH3582[H8735] from the kingH4428, and thou thyself wouldest have setH3320 thyself against meH8691. |
[13]If I had done it, it had been the danger of my life: for nothing can be hid from the king: yea, thou thyself wouldest have been against me. |
| [14]Then saidH559[H8799] JoabH3097, I may not tarryH3176[H8686] thus with theeH6440. And he tookH3947[H8799] threeH7969 dartsH7626 in his handH3709, and thrustH8628[H8799] them through the heartH3820 of AbsalomH53, while he was yet aliveH2416 in the midst of the oakH424. |
[14]Then said Joab, I will not thus tarry with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. |
| [15]And tenH6235 young menH5288 that bareH5375[H8802] Joab'sH3097 armourH3627 compassed aboutH5437[H8799] and smoteH5221[H8686] AbsalomH53, and slewH4191 himH8686. |
[15]And ten servants that bear Joab's armor, compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. |
| [16]And JoabH3097 blewH8628[H8799] the trumpetH7782, and the peopleH5971 returnedH7725[H8799] from pursuingH7291[H8800] afterH310 IsraelH3478: for JoabH3097 held backH2820[H8804] the peopleH5971. |
[16]Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people. |
| [17]And they tookH3947[H8799] AbsalomH53, and castH7993[H8686] him into a greatH1419 pitH6354 in the woodH3293, and laidH5324[H8686] a veryH3966 greatH1419 heapH1530 of stonesH68 upon him: and all IsraelH3478 fledH5127[H8804] every oneH376 to his tentH168. |
[17]And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a mighty great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent. |
| [18]Now AbsalomH53 in his lifetimeH2416 had takenH3947[H8804] and reared upH5324[H8686] for himself a pillarH4678, which is in the king'sH4428 daleH6010: for he saidH559[H8804], I have no sonH1121 to keep my nameH8034 in remembranceH2142[H8687]: and he calledH7121[H8799] the pillarH4678 after his own nameH8034: and it is calledH7121[H8735] unto this dayH3117, Absalom'sH53 placeH3027. |
[18]Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared him up a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance. and he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place. |
| [19]Then saidH559[H8804] AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659, Let me now runH7323[H8799], and bearH1319 the kingH4428 tidingsH1319[H8762], how that the LORDH3068 hath avengedH8199[H8804] him of his enemiesH3027[H341].[H8802] |
[19]Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, I pray thee, let me run, and bear the king tidings that the Lord hath delivered him out of the hand of his enemies. |
| [20]And JoabH3097 saidH559[H8799] unto him, ThouH376 shalt not bear tidingsH1309 this dayH3117, but thou shalt bear tidingsH1319[H8765] anotherH312 dayH3117: but this dayH3117 thou shalt bear no tidingsH1319[H8762], because the king'sH4428 sonH1121 is deadH4191.[H8804] |
[20]And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not be the messenger today, but thou shalt bear tidings another time, but today thou shalt bear none: for the king's son is dead. |
| [21]Then saidH559[H8799] JoabH3097 to CushiH3569, GoH3212[H8798] tellH5046[H8685] the kingH4428 what thou hast seenH7200[H8804]. And CushiH3569 bowedH7812[H8691] himself unto JoabH3097, and ranH7323.[H8799] |
[21]Then said Joab to Cushi, Go, tell the king, what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran. |
| [22]Then saidH559[H8799] AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659 yet againH3254[H8686] to JoabH3097, But howsoeverH4100, let me, I pray thee, also runH7323[H8799] afterH310 CushiH3569. And JoabH3097 saidH559[H8799], Wherefore wilt thou runH7323[H8801], my sonH1121, seeing that thou hast no tidingsH1309 readyH4672?[H8802] |
[22]Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok again to Joab, What, I pray thee, if I also run after Cushi? And Joab said, Wherefore now wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings to bring? |
| [23]But howsoever, said he, let me runH7323[H8799]. And he saidH559[H8799] unto him, RunH7323[H8798]. Then AhimaazH290 ranH7323[H8799] by the wayH1870 of the plainH3603, and overranH5674[H8799] CushiH3569. |
[23]Yet what if I run? Then he said unto him, Run. So Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overwent Cushi. |
| [24]And DavidH1732 satH3427[H8802] between the twoH8147 gatesH8179: and the watchmanH6822[H8802] went upH3212[H8799] to the roofH1406 over the gateH8179 unto the wallH2346, and lifted upH5375[H8799] his eyesH5869, and lookedH7200[H8799], and behold a manH376 runningH7323 aloneH8801. |
[24]Now David sat between the two gates. And the watchman went to the top of the gate upon the wall, and lift up his eyes, and saw, and behold, a man came running alone. |
| [25]And the watchmanH6822[H8802] criedH7121[H8799], and toldH5046[H8686] the kingH4428. And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799], If he be alone, there is tidingsH1309 in his mouthH6310. And he cameH3212[H8799] apaceH1980[H8800], and drew nearH7131. |
[25]And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the King said, If he be alone, he bringeth tidings. And he came apace, and drew near. |
| [26]And the watchmanH6822[H8802] sawH7200[H8799] anotherH312 manH376 runningH7323[H8801]: and the watchmanH6822[H8802] calledH7121[H8799] unto the porterH7778, and saidH559[H8799], Behold another manH376 runningH7323[H8801] alone. And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799], He also bringeth tidingsH1319.[H8764] |
[26]And the watchman saw another man running, and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold, another man runneth alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings. |
| [27]And the watchmanH6822[H8802] saidH559[H8799], Me thinkethH7200[H8802] the runningH4794 of the foremostH7223 is like the runningH4794 of AhimaazH290 the sonH1121 of ZadokH6659. And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799], He is a goodH2896 manH376, and comethH935[H8799] with goodH2896 tidingsH1309. |
[27]And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. Then the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. |
| [28]And AhimaazH290 calledH7121[H8799], and saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, All is wellH7965. And he fell downH7812[H8691] to the earthH776 upon his faceH639 before the kingH4428, and saidH559[H8799], BlessedH1288[H8803] be the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, which hath delivered upH5462[H8765] the menH582 that lifted upH5375[H8804] their handH3027 against my lordH113 the kingH4428. |
[28]And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, Peace be with thee: and he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, who hath shut up the men that lift up their hands against my lord the king. |
| [29]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799], Is the young manH5288 AbsalomH53 safeH7965? And AhimaazH290 answeredH559[H8799], When JoabH3097 sentH7971[H8800] the king'sH4428 servantH5650, and me thy servantH5650, I sawH7200[H8804] a greatH1419 tumultH1995, but I knewH3045 not what it wasH8804. |
[29]And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what. |
| [30]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto him, Turn asideH5437[H8798], and standH3320[H8690] hereH3541. And he turned asideH5437[H8735], and stood stillH5975.[H8799] |
[30]And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. so he turned aside and stood still. |
| [31]And, behold, CushiH3569 cameH935[H8802]; and CushiH3569 saidH559[H8799], TidingsH1319[H8691], my lordH113 the kingH4428: for the LORDH3068 hath avengedH8199[H8804] thee this dayH3117 of all themH3027 that rose upH6965 against theeH8801. |
[31]And behold, Cushi came, and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the Lord hath delivered thee this day out of the hand of all that rose against thee. |
| [32]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto CushiH3569, Is the young manH5288 AbsalomH53 safeH7965? And CushiH3569 answeredH559[H8799], The enemiesH341[H8802] of my lordH113 the kingH4428, and all that riseH6965[H8804] against thee to do thee hurtH7451, be as that young man isH5288. |
[32]Then the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. |
| [33]And the kingH4428 was much movedH7264[H8799], and went upH5927[H8799] to the chamberH5944 over the gateH8179, and weptH1058[H8799]: and as he wentH3212[H8800], thus he saidH559[H8804], O my sonH1121 AbsalomH53, my sonH1121, my sonH1121 AbsalomH53! would God I had diedH4191[H8800] for theeH5414[H8799], O AbsalomH53, my sonH1121, my sonH1121! |
[33]And the king was moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom: would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son. |
