The King James Version (w/Strong's)
KJV+
[1]And it was told to Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom. [1]And it was toldH5046[H8714] JoabH3097, Behold, the kingH4428 weepethH1058[H8802] and mournethH56[H8691] for AbsalomH53.
[2]And the victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people: for the people heard it said that day how the king was grieved for his son. [2]And the victoryH8668 that dayH3117 was turned into mourningH60 unto all the peopleH5971: for the peopleH5971 heardH8085[H8804] sayH559[H8800] that dayH3117 how the kingH4428 was grievedH6087[H8738] for his sonH1121.
[3]And the people withdrew by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle. [3]And the peopleH5971 gatH935[H8800] them by stealthH1589[H8691] that dayH3117 into the cityH5892, as peopleH5971 being ashamedH3637[H8737] steal awayH1589[H8691] when they fleeH5127[H8800] in battleH4421.
[4]But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son! [4]But the kingH4428 coveredH3813[H8804] his faceH6440, and the kingH4428 criedH2199[H8799] with a loudH1419 voiceH6963, O my sonH1121 AbsalomH53, O AbsalomH53, my sonH1121, my sonH1121!
[5]And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines; [5]And JoabH3097 cameH935[H8799] into the houseH1004 to the kingH4428, and saidH559[H8799], Thou hast shamedH3001[H8689] this dayH3117 the facesH6440 of all thy servantsH5650, which this dayH3117 have savedH4422[H8764] thy lifeH5315, and the livesH5315 of thy sonsH1121 and of thy daughtersH1323, and the livesH5315 of thy wivesH802, and the livesH5315 of thy concubinesH6370;
[6]In that thou lovest thy enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well. [6]In that thou lovestH157[H8800] thine enemiesH8130[H8802], and hatestH8130[H8800] thy friendsH157[H8802]. For thou hast declaredH5046[H8689] this dayH3117, that thou regardest neither princesH8269 nor servantsH5650: for this dayH3117 I perceiveH3045[H8804], that ifH3863 AbsalomH53 had livedH2416, and all we had diedH4191[H8801] this dayH3117, then it had pleased thee wellH3477.[H5869]
[7]Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably to thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou shalt not go forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse to thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now. [7]Now therefore ariseH6965[H8798], go forthH3318[H8798], and speakH1696[H8761] comfortablyH3820 unto thy servantsH5650: for I swearH7650[H8738] by the LORDH3068, if thou go not forthH3318[H8802], there will not tarryH3885[H8799] oneH376 with thee this nightH3915: and that will be worseH7489[H8804] unto thee than all the evilH7451 that befellH935[H8804] thee from thy youth until nowH5271.
[8]Then the king rose, and sat in the gate. And they told to all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent. [8]Then the kingH4428 aroseH6965[H8799], and satH3427[H8799] in the gateH8179. And they toldH5046[H8689] unto all the peopleH5971, sayingH559[H8800], Behold, the kingH4428 doth sitH3427[H8802] in the gateH8179. And all the peopleH5971 cameH935[H8799] beforeH6440 the kingH4428: for IsraelH3478 had fledH5127[H8804] every manH376 to his tentH168.
[9]And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us from the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us from the hand of the Philistines; and now he hath fled out of the land for Absalom. [9]And all the peopleH5971 were at strifeH1777[H8737] throughout all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559[H8800], The kingH4428 savedH5337[H8689] us out of the handH3709 of our enemiesH341[H8802], and he deliveredH4422[H8765] us out of the handH3709 of the PhilistinesH6430; and now he is fledH1272[H8804] out of the landH776 for AbsalomH53.
[10]And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back? [10]And AbsalomH53, whom we anointedH4886[H8804] over us, is deadH4191[H8804] in battleH4421. Now therefore why speakH2790[H8688] ye not a word of bringingH7725 the kingH4428 backH7725?[H8687]
[11]And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house. [11]And kingH4428 DavidH1732 sentH7971[H8804] to ZadokH6659 and to AbiatharH54 the priestsH3548, sayingH559[H8800], SpeakH1696[H8761] unto the eldersH2205 of JudahH3063, sayingH559[H8800], Why are ye the lastH314 to bringH7725 the kingH4428 backH7725[H8687] to his houseH1004? seeing the speechH1697 of all IsraelH3478 is comeH935[H8804] to the kingH4428, even to his houseH1004.
[12]Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: why then are ye the last to bring back the king? [12]Ye are my brethrenH251, ye are my bonesH6106 and my fleshH1320: wherefore then are ye the lastH314 to bring backH7725[H8687] the kingH4428?
[13]And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab. [13]And sayH559[H8799] ye to AmasaH6021, Art thou not of my boneH6106, and of my fleshH1320? GodH430 doH6213[H8799] so to me, and moreH3254[H8686] also, if thou be not captainH8269 of the hostH6635 beforeH6440 me continuallyH3117 in the roomH8478 of JoabH3097.
[14]And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word to the king, Return thou, and all thy servants. [14]And he bowedH5186[H8686] the heartH3824 of all the menH376 of JudahH3063, even as the heart of oneH259 manH376; so that they sentH7971[H8799] this word unto the kingH4428, ReturnH7725[H8798] thou, and all thy servantsH5650.
[15]So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan. [15]So the kingH4428 returnedH7725[H8799], and cameH935[H8799] to JordanH3383. And JudahH3063 cameH935[H8804] to GilgalH1537, to goH3212[H8800] to meetH7125[H8800] the kingH4428, to conductH5674 the kingH4428 overH5674[H8687] JordanH3383.
[16]And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjaminite, who was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David. [16]And ShimeiH8096 the sonH1121 of GeraH1617, a BenjamiteH1145, which was of BahurimH980, hastedH4116[H8762] and came downH3381[H8799] with the menH376 of JudahH3063 to meetH7125[H8800] kingH4428 DavidH1732.
[17]And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king. [17]And there were a thousandH505 menH376 of BenjaminH1145 with him, and ZibaH6717 the servantH5288 of the houseH1004 of SaulH7586, and his fifteenH2568[H6240] sonsH1121 and his twentyH6242 servantsH5650 with him; and they went overH6743[H8804] JordanH3383 beforeH6440 the kingH4428.
[18]And there went over a ferry-boat to carry over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he came over Jordan; [18]And there went overH5674[H8804] a ferry boatH5679 to carry overH5674[H8687] the king'sH4428 householdH1004, and to doH6213[H8800] what he thoughtH5869 goodH2896. And ShimeiH8096 the sonH1121 of GeraH1617 fell downH5307[H8804] beforeH6440 the kingH4428, as he was come overH5674[H8800] JordanH3383;
[19]And said to the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity to me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart. [19]And saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, Let not my lordH113 imputeH2803[H8799] iniquityH5771 unto me, neither do thou rememberH2142[H8799] that which thy servantH5650 did perverselyH5753[H8689] the dayH3117 that my lordH113 the kingH4428 went outH3318[H8804] of JerusalemH3389, that the kingH4428 should takeH7760[H8800] it to his heartH3820.
[20]For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore behold, I have come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king. [20]For thy servantH5650 doth knowH3045[H8804] that I have sinnedH2398[H8804]: therefore, behold, I am comeH935[H8804] the firstH7223 this dayH3117 of all the houseH1004 of JosephH3130 to go downH3381[H8800] to meetH7125[H8800] my lordH113 the kingH4428.
[21]But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD'S anointed? [21]But AbishaiH52 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], Shall not ShimeiH8096 be put to deathH4191[H8714] for this, because he cursedH7043[H8765] the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899?
[22]And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries to me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel? [22]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799], What have I to do with you, ye sonsH1121 of ZeruiahH6870, that ye should this dayH3117 be adversariesH7854 unto me? shall there any manH376 be put to deathH4191[H8714] this dayH3117 in IsraelH3478? for do not I knowH3045[H8804] that I am this dayH3117 kingH4428 over IsraelH3478?
[23]Therefore the king said to Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king swore to him. [23]Therefore the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto ShimeiH8096, Thou shalt not dieH4191[H8799]. And the kingH4428 swareH7650 unto himH8735.
[24]And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace. [24]And MephiboshethH4648 the sonH1121 of SaulH7586 came downH3381[H8804] to meetH7125[H8800] the kingH4428, and had neitherH3808 dressedH6213[H8804] his feetH7272, nor trimmedH6213[H8804] his beardH8222, nor washedH3526[H8765] his clothesH899, from the dayH3117 the kingH4428 departedH3212[H8800] until the dayH3117 he cameH935[H8804] again in peaceH7965.
[25]And it came to pass, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth? [25]And it came to pass, when he was comeH935[H8804] to JerusalemH3389 to meetH7125[H8800] the kingH4428, that the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto him, Wherefore wentestH1980[H8804] not thou with me, MephiboshethH4648?
[26]And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride on it, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame. [26]And he answeredH559[H8799], My lordH113, O kingH4428, my servantH5650 deceivedH7411[H8765] me: for thy servantH5650 saidH559[H8804], I will saddleH2280[H8799] me an assH2543, that I may rideH7392[H8799] thereon, and goH3212[H8799] to the kingH4428; because thy servantH5650 is lameH6455.
[27]And he hath slandered thy servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thy eyes. [27]And he hath slanderedH7270[H8762] thy servantH5650 unto my lordH113 the kingH4428; but my lordH113 the kingH4428 is as an angelH4397 of GodH430: doH6213[H8798] therefore what is goodH2896 in thine eyesH5869.
[28]For all of my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that ate at thy own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more to the king? [28]For all of my father'sH1 houseH1004 were butH3808 deadH4194 menH582 before my lordH113 the kingH4428: yet didst thou setH7896[H8799] thy servantH5650 among them that did eatH398[H8802] at thine own tableH7979. What rightH6666 therefore haveH3426 I yet to cryH2199[H8800] any more unto the kingH4428?
[29]And the king said to him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land. [29]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto him, Why speakestH1696[H8762] thou any more of thy mattersH1697? I have saidH559[H8804], Thou and ZibaH6717 divideH2505[H8799] the landH7704.
[30]And Mephibosheth said to the king, Yes, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king hath come again in peace to his own house. [30]And MephiboshethH4648 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, Yea, let him takeH3947[H8799] all, forasmuchH310 asH834 my lordH113 the kingH4428 is come againH935[H8804] in peaceH7965 unto his own houseH1004.
[31]And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan. [31]And BarzillaiH1271 the GileaditeH1569 came downH3381[H8804] from RogelimH7274, and went overH5674[H8799] JordanH3383 with the kingH4428, to conductH7971[H8763] him over JordanH3383.
[32]Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim: for he was a very great man. [32]Now BarzillaiH1271 was a veryH3966 agedH2204[H8804] man, even fourscoreH8084 yearsH8141 oldH1121: and he had provided the kingH4428 of sustenanceH3557[H8773] while he layH7871 at MahanaimH4266; for he was a veryH3966 greatH1419 manH376.
[33]And the king said to Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. [33]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto BarzillaiH1271, Come thou overH5674[H8798] with me, and I will feedH3557[H8773] thee with me in JerusalemH3389.
[34]And Barzillai said to the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? [34]And BarzillaiH1271 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, How longH3117 have I to liveH8141[H2416], that I should go upH5927[H8799] with the kingH4428 unto JerusalemH3389?
[35]I am this day eighty years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing-men and singing-women? why then should thy servant be yet a burden to my lord the king? [35]I am this dayH3117 fourscoreH8084 yearsH8141 oldH1121: and can I discernH3045[H8799] between goodH2896 and evilH7451? can thy servantH5650 tasteH2938[H8799] whatH834 I eatH398[H8799] or whatH834 I drinkH8354[H8799]? can I hearH8085[H8799] any more the voiceH6963 of singing menH7891[H8802] and singing womenH7891[H8802]? wherefore then should thy servantH5650 be yet a burdenH4853 unto my lordH113 the kingH4428?
[36]Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense me with such a reward? [36]Thy servantH5650 will goH5674 a little wayH4592 overH5674[H8799] JordanH3383 with the kingH4428: and why should the kingH4428 recompenseH1580[H8799] it me with such a rewardH1578?
[37]Let thy servant, I pray thee, return again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to thee. [37]Let thy servantH5650, I pray thee, turn back againH7725[H8799], that I may dieH4191[H8799] in mine own cityH5892, and be buried by the graveH6913 of my fatherH1 and of my motherH517. But behold thy servantH5650 ChimhamH3643; let him go overH5674[H8799] with my lordH113 the kingH4428; and doH6213[H8798] to him what shall seem goodH2896 unto theeH5869.
[38]And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to thee: and whatever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee. [38]And the kingH4428 answeredH559[H8799], ChimhamH3643 shall goH5674[H8799] over with me, and I will doH6213[H8799] to him that which shall seem goodH2896[H5869] unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt requireH977[H8799] of me, that will I doH6213 for theeH8799.
[39]And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king had come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place. [39]And all the peopleH5971 went overH5674[H8799] JordanH3383. And when the kingH4428 was come overH5674[H8804], the kingH4428 kissedH5401[H8799] BarzillaiH1271, and blessedH1288[H8762] him; and he returnedH7725[H8799] unto his own placeH4725.
[40]Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel. [40]Then the kingH4428 went onH5674[H8799] to GilgalH1537, and ChimhamH3643 went onH5674[H8804] with him: and all the peopleH5971 of JudahH3063 conductedH5674[H8689][H8675][H5674][H8686] the kingH4428, and also halfH2677 the peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478.
[41]And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to him, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David's men with him, over Jordan? [41]And, behold, all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 cameH935[H8802] to the kingH4428, and saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, Why have our brethrenH251 the menH376 of JudahH3063 stolen thee awayH1589[H8804], and have broughtH5674[H8686] the kingH4428, and his householdH1004, and all David'sH1732 menH582 with him, over JordanH3383?
[42]And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: why then are ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all at the king's cost? or hath he given us any gift? [42]And all the menH376 of JudahH3063 answeredH6030[H8799] the menH376 of IsraelH3478, Because the kingH4428 is near of kinH7138 to us: wherefore then be ye angryH2734[H8804] for this matterH1697? have we eatenH398[H8804] at allH398[H8800] of the king'sH4428 cost? or hath he givenH5375[H8765] us any giftH5379?
[43]And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel. [43]And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 answeredH6030[H8799] the menH376 of JudahH3063, and saidH559[H8799], We have tenH6235 partsH3027 in the kingH4428, and weH589 have also more right in DavidH1732 than ye: why then did ye despiseH7043[H8689] us, that our adviceH1697 should not be firstH7223 had in bringing backH7725[H8687] our kingH4428? And the wordsH1697 of the menH376 of JudahH3063 were fiercerH7185[H8799] than the wordsH1697 of the menH376 of IsraelH3478.
