[1]Loquentibus autem illis ad populum, supervenerunt sacerdotes, et magistratus templi, et sadducæi, |
[1]And while they were speaking these words to the people, the priests and the Sadducees and the rulers of the temple rose up against them; |
[2]dolentes quod docerent populum, et annuntiarent in Jesu resurrectionem ex mortuis: |
[2]being angry with them, that they taught the people, and preached a resurrection from the dead by the Messiah. |
[3]et injecerunt in eos manus, et posuerunt eos in custodiam in crastinum: erat enim jam vespera. |
[3]And they laid hands on them, and kept them until the next day; because evening was drawing near. |
[4]Multi autem eorum, qui audierant verbum, crediderunt: et factus est numerus virorum quinque millia. |
[4]And many who had heard the word, believed; and they were, in number, about five thousand men. |
[5]Factum est autem in crastinum, ut congregarentur principes eorum, et seniores, et scribæ in Jerusalem. |
[5]And the next day, the rulers and the Elders and the Scribes assembled; |
[6]Et Annas princeps sacerdotum, et Caiphas, et Joannes, et Alexander, et quotquot erant de genere sacerdotali. |
[6]and also Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and they who were of the kindred of the high priests. |
[7]Et statuentes eos in medio, interrogabant: In qua virtute, aut in quo nomine fecistis hoc vos? |
[7]And when they had set them in the midst, they interrogated them: By what power or what name, have ye done this? |
[8]Tunc repletus Spiritu Sancto Petrus, dixit ad eos: Principes populi, et seniores, audite: |
[8]Then Simon Cephas was filled with the Holy Spirit, and said to them: Ye rulers of the people, and Elders of the house of Israel, hear ye. |
[9]si nos hodie dijudicamur in benefacto hominis infirmi, in quo iste salvus factus est, |
[9]If we are judged by you this day, respecting the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he was healed; |
[10]notum sit omnibus vobis, et omni plebi Israël: quia in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi Nazareni, quem vos crucifixistis, quem Deus suscitavit a mortuis, in hoc iste astat coram vobis sanus. |
[10]be it known to you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Messiah the Nazarean, whom ye crucified, and whom God hath raised from the dead, lo, by him, doth this [man] stand here before you recovered. |
[11]Hic est lapis qui reprobatus est a vobis ædificantibus, qui factus est in caput anguli: |
[11]This is the stone, which ye builders rejected; and it hath become the head of the corner. |
[12]et non est in alio aliquo salus. Nec enim aliud nomen est sub cælo datum hominibus, in quo oporteat nos salvos fieri. |
[12]Neither is there deliverance in any other; for there is not another name under heaven, which is given to men, whereby to live. |
[13]Videntes autem Petri constantiam, et Joannis, comperto quod homines essent sine litteris, et idiotæ, admirabantur, et cognoscebant eos quoniam cum Jesu fuerant: |
[13]And when they heard the speech of Simon and John, which they pronounced confidently, they reflected that these were unlearned and plebeian men, and they were surprised at them, and recognized them as having been conversant with Jesus. |
[14]hominem quoque videntes stantem cum eis, qui curatus fuerat, nihil poterant contradicere. |
[14]And they saw that the lame man, who had been healed, stood near them; and they could say nothing to confront them. |
[15]Jusserunt autem eos foras extra concilium secedere: et conferebant ad invicem, |
[15]Then they commanded to remove them from the presence of the council; and said one to another: |
[16]dicentes: Quid faciemus hominibus istis? quoniam quidem notum signum factum est per eos, omnibus habitantibus Jerusalem: manifestum est, et non possumus negare. |
[16]What shall we do to these men? For lo, that a manifest sign hath been wrought by them, is known to all that reside at Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. |
[17]Sed ne amplius divulgetur in populum, comminemur eis, ne ultra loquantur in nomine hoc ulli hominum. |
[17]But that the fame of it spread no further, let us interdict their speaking any more to any man in this name. |
[18]Et vocantes eos, denuntiaverunt ne omnino loquerentur, neque docerent in nomine Jesu. |
[18]And they called them, and commanded them not to speak nor to teach at all in the name of Jesus. |
[19]Petrus vero et Joannes respondentes, dixerunt ad eos: Si justum est in conspectu Dei, vos potius audire quam Deum, judicate. |
[19]Simon Cephas and John answered, and said to them: Whether it be right before God, that we hearken to you more than to God, judge ye. |
[20]Non enim possumus quæ vidimus et audivimus non loqui. |
[20]For we cannot but speak that which we have seen and heard. |
[21]At illi comminantes dimiserunt eos: non invenientes quomodo punirent eos propter populum, quia omnes clarificabant id quod factum fuerat in eo quod acciderat. |
[21]And they threatened them, and dismissed them. For they found no ground for punishing them, because of the people: for every one praised God for what had been done; |
[22]Annorum enim erat amplius quadraginta homo, in quo factum fuerat signum istud sanitatis. |
[22]for the man, on whom this sign of healing had been wrought, was more than forty years old. |
[23]Dimissi autem venerunt ad suos, et annuntiaverunt eis quanta ad eos principes sacerdotum et seniores dixissent. |
[23]And when they were dismissed, they went to their brethren, and told them all that the priests and Elders had said. |
[24]Qui cum audissent, unanimiter levaverunt vocem ad Deum, et dixerunt: Domine, tu es qui fecisti cælum et terram, mare et omnia quæ in eis sunt: |
[24]And they, when they heard [it], unitedly lifted up their voice to God and said: Lord, thou art God, who hast made heaven, and earth, and seas, and every thing in them. |
[25]qui Spiritu Sancto per os patris nostri David, pueri tui, dixisti: Quare fremuerunt gentes, et populi meditati sunt inania? |
[25]And it is thou who hast said, by the Holy Spirit in the mouth of David thy servant: Why do the nations rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? |
[26]Astiterunt reges terræ, et principes convenerunt in unum adversus Dominum, et adversus Christum ejus? |
[26]The kings of the earth and the potentates stood up, and they consulted together, against the Lord, and against his anointed. |
[27]Convenerunt enim vere in civitate ista adversus sanctum puerum tuum Jesum, quem unxisti, Herodes, et Pontius Pilatus, cum gentibus, et populis Israël, |
[27]For, in reality, against thy holy Son Jesus whom thou hast anointed, Herod and Pilate, with the Gentiles and the congregation of Israel, have been combined together in this city, |
[28]facere quæ manus tua et consilium tuum decreverunt fieri. |
[28]to do whatever thy hand and thy pleasure previously marked out to be done. |
[29]Et nunc, Domine, respice in minas eorum, et da servis tuis cum omni fiducia loqui verbum tuum, |
[29]And also now, Lord, behold and see their menaces: and grant to thy servants, that they may proclaim thy word boldly, |
[30]in eo quod manum tuam extendas ad sanitates, et signa, et prodigia fieri per nomen sancti filii tui Jesu. |
[30]while thou extendest thy hand for cures and prodigies, to be done in the name of thy holy Son Jesus. |
[31]Et cum orassent, motus est locus in quo erant congregati: et repleti sunt omnes Spiritu Sancto, et loquebantur verbum Dei cum fiducia. |
[31]And when they had prayed and made supplications, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God boldly. |
[32]Multitudinis autem credentium erat cor unum, et anima una: nec quisquam eorum quæ possidebat, aliquid suum esse dicebat, sed erant illis omnia communia. |
[32]And in the assembly of the persons that believed, there was one soul, and one mind: and no one of them said, of the property he possessed, that it was his own; but whatever was theirs, it was the community's. |
[33]Et virtute magna reddebant Apostoli testimonium resurrectionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri: et gratia magna erat in omnibus illis. |
[33]And with great power, the legates testified to the resurrection of Jesus Messiah: and great grace was with them all. |
[34]Neque enim quisquam egens erat inter illos. Quotquot enim possessores agrorum aut domorum erant, vendentes afferebant pretia eorum quæ vendebant, |
[34]And no one among them was destitute; for those who possessed lands or houses, sold, and brought the price of what was sold, |
[35]et ponebant ante pedes Apostolorum. Dividebatur autem singulis prout cuique opus erat. |
[35]and placed [it] at the feet of the legates; and distribution was made to every one, as he had need. |
[36]Joseph autem, qui cognominatus est Barnabas ab Apostolis (quod est interpretatum Filius consolationis), Levites, Cyprius genere, |
[36]And Joseph, who by the legates was surnamed Barnabas, (which is interpreted Son of Consolation,) a Levite of the country of Cyprus, |
[37]cum haberet agrum, vendidit eum, et attulit pretium, et posuit ante pedes Apostolorum. |
[37]had a field: and he sold it, and brought the price of it, and laid [it] before the feet of the legates. |
