Exo
1
[1]Now these are the namesH8034 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, which cameH935[H8802] into EgyptH4714; every manH376 and his householdH1004 cameH935[H8804] with JacobH3290. [1]Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt (every man and his household came thither with Jacob)
[2]ReubenH7205, SimeonH8095, LeviH3878, and JudahH3063, [2]Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
[3]IssacharH3485, ZebulunH2074, and BenjaminH1144, [3]Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
[4]DanH1835, and NaphtaliH5321, GadH1410, and AsherH836. [4]Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
[5]And all the soulsH5315 that came outH3318[H8802] of the loinsH3409 of JacobH3290 were seventyH7657 soulsH5315: for JosephH3130 was in Egypt alreadyH4714. [5]So all the souls, that came out of the loins of Jacob, were seventy souls: Joseph was in Egypt already.
[6]And JosephH3130 diedH4191[H8799], and all his brethrenH251, and all that generationH1755. [6]Now Joseph died and all his brethren, and that whole generation.
[7]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 were fruitfulH6509[H8804], and increased abundantlyH8317[H8799], and multipliedH7235[H8799], and waxed exceedingH3966[H3966] mightyH6105[H8799]; and the landH776 was filledH4390 with themH8735. [7]And the children of Israel brought forth fruit and increased in abundance, and were multiplied, and were exceeding mighty, so that the land was full of them.
[8]Now there arose upH6965[H8799] a newH2319 kingH4428 over EgyptH4714, which knewH3045[H8804] not JosephH3130. [8]Then there rose up a new king in Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
[9]And he saidH559[H8799] unto his peopleH5971, Behold, the peopleH5971 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 are moreH7227 and mightier than weH6099: [9]And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are greater and mightier than we.
[10]Come onH3051[H8798], let us deal wiselyH2449[H8691] with them; lest they multiplyH7235[H8799], and it come to pass, that, when there falleth outH7122[H8799] any warH4421, theyH1931 joinH3254[H8738] also unto our enemiesH8130[H8802], and fightH3898[H8738] against us, and so get them upH5927[H8804] out of the landH776. [10]Come, let us work wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that if there be war, they join themselves also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them out of the land.
[11]Therefore they did setH7760[H8799] over them taskmastersH4522[H8269] to afflictH6031[H8763] them with their burdensH5450. And they builtH1129[H8799] for PharaohH6547 treasureH4543 citiesH5892, PithomH6619 and RaamsesH7486. [11]Therefore did they set taskmasters over them, to keep them under with burdens: and they built the cities Pithom and Rameses for the treasures of Pharaoh.
[12]But the more they afflictedH6031[H8762] them, the moreH3651 they multipliedH7235[H8799] and grewH6555[H8799]. And they were grievedH6973[H8799] becauseH6440 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. [12]But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grew: therefore they were more grieved against the children of Israel.
[13]And the EgyptiansH4714 madeH5647 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 to serveH5647[H8686] with rigourH6531: [13]Wherefore the Egyptians by cruelty caused the children of Israel to serve.
[14]And they madeH4843 their livesH2416 bitterH4843[H8762] with hardH7186 bondageH5656, in morterH2563, and in brickH3843, and in all manner of serviceH5656 in the fieldH7704: all their serviceH5656, wherein they made them serveH5647[H8804], was with rigourH6531. [14]Thus they made them weary of their lives by sore labor in clay and in brick, and in all work in the field, with all manner of bondage, which they laid upon them most cruelly.
[15]And the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 spakeH559[H8799] to the HebrewH5680 midwivesH3205[H8764], of which the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was ShiphrahH8236, and the nameH8034 of the otherH8145 PuahH6326: [15]Moreover the king of Egypt commanded the midwives of the Hebrew women, (of which the one's name was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah)
[16]And he saidH559[H8799], When ye do the office of a midwifeH3205[H8763] to the Hebrew womenH5680, and seeH7200[H8804] them upon the stoolsH70; if it be a sonH1121, then ye shall killH4191[H8689] him: but if it be a daughterH1323, then she shall liveH2425.[H8804] [16]And said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the women of the Hebrews, and see them on their stools, if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then let her live.
[17]But the midwivesH3205[H8764] fearedH3372[H8799] GodH430, and didH6213[H8804] not as the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 commandedH1696[H8765] them, but savedH2421 the men childrenH3206 aliveH2421.[H8762] [17]Notwithstanding the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but preserved alive the men children.
[18]And the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 calledH7121[H8799] for the midwivesH3205[H8764], and saidH559[H8799] unto them, WhyH4069 have ye doneH6213[H8804] this thingH1697, and have savedH2421 the men childrenH3206 aliveH2421?[H8762] [18]Then the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done thus, and have preserved alive the men children?
[19]And the midwivesH3205[H8764] saidH559[H8799] unto PharaohH6547, Because the HebrewH5680 womenH802 are not as the Egyptian womenH4713; for they are livelyH2422, and are deliveredH3205[H8804] ereH2962 the midwivesH3205[H8764] come inH935 unto themH8799. [19]And the midwives answered Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt: for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come at them.
[20]Therefore GodH430 dealt wellH3190[H8686] with the midwivesH3205[H8764]: and the peopleH5971 multipliedH7235[H8799], and waxed veryH3966 mightyH6105.[H8799] [20]God therefore prospered the midwives, and the people multiplied and were very mighty.
[21]And it came to pass, because the midwivesH3205[H8764] fearedH3372[H8804] GodH430, that he madeH6213[H8799] them housesH1004. [21]And because the midwives feared God, therefore he made them houses.
[22]And PharaohH6547 chargedH6680[H8762] all his peopleH5971, sayingH559[H8800], Every sonH1121 that is bornH3209 ye shall castH7993[H8686] into the riverH2975, and every daughterH1323 ye shall save aliveH2421.[H8762] [22]Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every man child that is born, cast ye into the river, but reserve every maid child alive.
