[1]And it came to pass in the daysH3117 of AhazH271 the sonH1121 of JothamH3147, the sonH1121 of UzziahH5818, kingH4428 of JudahH3063, that RezinH7526 the kingH4428 of SyriaH758, and PekahH6492 the sonH1121 of RemaliahH7425, kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, went upH5927[H8804] toward JerusalemH3389 to warH4421 against it, but couldH3201[H8804] not prevailH3898 against itH8736. [1]And in the days of Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah king of Judah, Rezin the king of Aram [Syria] came up, and Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel, to Jerusalem to fight against it, but he could not overcome it.
[2]And it was toldH5046[H8714] the houseH1004 of DavidH1732, sayingH559[H8800], SyriaH758 is confederateH5117[H8804] with EphraimH669. And his heartH3824 was movedH5128[H8799], and the heartH3824 of his peopleH5971, as the treesH6086 of the woodH3293 are movedH5128[H8800] withH6440 the windH7307. [2]And it was told the house of David, saying, Aram [Syria] is joined with Ephraim: therefore his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest are moved by the wind.
[3]Then saidH559[H8799] the LORDH3068 unto IsaiahH3470, Go forthH3318[H8798] now to meetH7125[H8800] AhazH271, thou, and ShearjashubH7610 thy sonH1121, at the endH7097 of the conduitH8585 of the upperH5945 poolH1295 in the highwayH4546 of the fuller'sH3526[H8801] fieldH7704; [3]Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz (thou and Shearjashub thy son) at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, in the path of the fuller's field,
[4]And sayH559[H8804] unto him, Take heedH8104[H8734], and be quietH8252[H8685]; fearH3372[H8799] not, neither be faintheartedH7401[H8735][H3824] for the twoH8147 tailsH2180 of these smokingH6226 firebrandsH181, for the fierceH2750 angerH639 of RezinH7526 with SyriaH758, and of the sonH1121 of RemaliahH7425. [4]And say unto him, Take heed, and be still: fear not, neither be faint hearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the furious wrath of Rezin and of Aram [Syria], and of Remaliah's son:
[5]Because SyriaH758, EphraimH669, and the sonH1121 of RemaliahH7425, have taken evilH7451 counselH3289[H8804] against thee, sayingH559,[H8800] [5]Because Aram [Syria] hath taken wicked counsel against thee, and Ephraim, and Remaliah's son, saying,
[6]Let us go upH5927[H8799] against JudahH3063, and vexH6973[H8686] it, and let us make a breachH1234[H8686] therein for us, and setH4427[H8686] a kingH4428 in the midstH8432 of it, even the sonH1121 of TabealH2870: [6]Let us go up against Judah, and let us waken them up, and make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst thereof, even the son of Tabeal.
[7]ThusH3541 saithH559[H8804] the LordH136 GODH3069, It shall not standH6965, neither shall it come to passH8799. [7]Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it be.
[8]For the headH7218 of SyriaH758 is DamascusH1834, and the headH7218 of DamascusH1834 is RezinH7526; and within threescoreH8346 and fiveH2568 yearsH8141 shall EphraimH669 be brokenH2865[H8735], that it be not a peopleH5971. [8]For the head of Aram [Syria] is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin: and within five and threescore year, Ephraim shall be destroyed from being a people.
[9]And the headH7218 of EphraimH669 is SamariaH8111, and the headH7218 of SamariaH8111 is Remaliah'sH7425 sonH1121. If ye will not believeH539[H8686], surely ye shall not be establishedH539.[H8735] [9]And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If ye believe not, surely ye shall not be established.
[10]Moreover the LORDH3068 spakeH1696[H8763] againH3254[H8686] unto AhazH271, sayingH559,[H8800] [10]And the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying,
[11]AskH7592[H8798] thee a signH226 of the LORDH3068 thy GodH430; askH7592[H8800] it either in the depthH6009[H8685], or in the heightH1361[H8687] aboveH4605. [11]Ask a sign for thee of the Lord thy God: ask it, either in the depth or in the height above.
[12]But AhazH271 saidH559[H8799], I will not askH7592[H8799], neither will I temptH5254[H8762][H853] the LORDH3068. [12]But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.
[13]And he saidH559[H8799], HearH8085[H8798] ye now, O houseH1004 of DavidH1732; Is it a small thingH4592 for you to wearyH3811[H8687] menH582, but will ye wearyH3811[H8686] my God alsoH430? [13]Then he said, Hear you now, O house of David, Is it a small thing for you to grieve men, that ye will also grieve my God?
[14]Therefore the LordH136 himself shall giveH5414[H8799] you a signH226; Behold, a virginH5959 shall conceiveH2030, and bearH3205[H8802] a sonH1121, and shall callH7121[H8804] his nameH8034 ImmanuelH6005.[H410] [14]Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and she shall call his name Immanuel.
[15]ButterH2529 and honeyH1706 shall he eatH398[H8799], that he may knowH3045[H8800] to refuseH3988[H8800] the evilH7451, and chooseH977[H8800] the goodH2896. [15]Butter and honey shall he eat, till he have knowledge to refuse the evil, and to choose the good.
[16]For before the childH5288 shall knowH3045[H8799] to refuseH3988[H8800] the evilH7451, and chooseH977[H8800] the goodH2896, the landH127 that thou abhorrestH6973[H8801] shall beH6440 forsakenH5800[H8735] of bothH8147 her kingsH4428. [16]For afore the child shall have knowledge to eschew the evil, and to choose the good, the land, that thou abhorrest, shall be forsaken of both her kings.
[17]The LORDH3068 shall bringH935[H8686] upon thee, and upon thy peopleH5971, and upon thy father'sH1 houseH1004, daysH3117 that have not comeH935[H8804], from the dayH3117 that EphraimH669 departedH5493[H8800] from JudahH3063; even the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. [17]The Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house (the days that have not come from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah) even the king of Asshur [Assyria].
[18]And it shall come to pass in that dayH3117, that the LORDH3068 shall hissH8319[H8799] for the flyH2070 that is in the uttermost partH7097 of the riversH2975 of EgyptH4714, and for the beeH1682 that is in the landH776 of AssyriaH804. [18]And in that day shall the Lord hiss for the fly that is at the uttermost part of the floods of Egypt, and for the bee which is in the land of Asshur [Assyria],
[19]And they shall comeH935[H8804], and shall restH5117[H8804] all of them in the desolateH1327 valleysH5158, and in the holesH5357 of the rocksH5553, and upon all thornsH5285, and upon all bushesH5097. [19]And they shall come and shall light all in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorny places, and upon all bushy places.
[20]In the same dayH3117 shall the LordH136 shaveH1548[H8762] with a razorH8593 that is hiredH7917, namely, by them beyondH5676 the riverH5104, by the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, the headH7218, and the hairH8181 of the feetH7272: and it shall also consumeH5595[H8799] the beardH2206. [20]In that day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, even by them beyond the river, by the king of Asshur, [Assyria] the head and the hair of the feet, and it shall consume the beard.
[21]And it shall come to pass in that dayH3117, that a manH376 shall nourishH2421[H8762] a youngH1241 cowH5697, and twoH8147 sheepH6629; [21]And in the same day shall a man nourish a young cow, and two sheep.
[22]And it shall come to pass, for the abundanceH7230 of milkH2461 that they shall giveH6213[H8800] he shall eatH398[H8799] butterH2529: for butterH2529 and honeyH1706 shall every one eatH398[H8799] that is leftH3498[H8737] inH7130 the landH776. [22]And for the abundance of milk, that they shall give, he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall everyone eat, which is left within the land.
[23]And it shall come to pass in that dayH3117, that every placeH4725 shall be, where there were a thousandH505 vinesH1612 at a thousandH505 silverlingsH3701, it shall even be for briersH8068 and thornsH7898. [23]And at the same day every place, wherein shall be a thousand vines, shall be at a thousand pieces of silver: so it shall be for the briers and for the thorns.
[24]With arrowsH2671 and with bowsH7198 shall men comeH935[H8799] thither; because all the landH776 shall become briersH8068 and thornsH7898. [24]With arrows and with bow shall one come thither: because all the land shall be briers and thorns.
[25]And on all hillsH2022 that shall be diggedH5737[H8735] with the mattockH4576, there shall not come thitherH935[H8799] the fearH3374 of briersH8068 and thornsH7898: but it shall be for the sending forthH4916 of oxenH7794, and for the treadingH4823 of lesser cattleH7716. [25]But on all the mountains, which shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but they shall be for the sending out of bullocks, and for the treading of sheep.
