[1]NOW Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and the Spirit carried him away into the wilderness, |
[1]Jesus autem plenus Spiritu Sancto regressus est a Jordane: et agebatur a Spiritu in desertum |
[2]Forty days, in order that he might be tempted by the adversary. And he did not eat anything in those days; and when they were over, at last he became hungry. |
[2]diebus quadraginta, et tentabatur a diabolo. Et nihil manducavit in diebus illis: et consummatis illis esuriit. |
[3]And the adversary said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. |
[3]Dixit autem illi diabolus: Si Filius Dei es, dic lapidi huic ut panis fiat. |
[4]Jesus answered and said to him, It is written, That it is not by bread alone that man can live, but by every word of God. |
[5]Then Satan took him up to a high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the earth in a short time. |
[5]Et duxit illum diabolus in montem excelsum, et ostendit illi omnia regna orbis terræ in momento temporis, |
[6]And the adversary said to him, I will give you all this power and its glory, which are entrusted to me, and I give it to whom I please; |
[7]If therefore you worship me, it will all be yours. |
[7]Tu ergo si adoraveris coram me, erunt tua omnia. |
[8]Jesus answered and said to him, It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only you shall serve. |
[9]And he brought him to Jerusalem and made him to stand up on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; |
[9]Et duxit illum in Jerusalem, et statuit eum super pinnam templi, et dixit illi: Si Filius Dei es, mitte te hinc deorsum. |
[10]For it is written, That he will command his angels concerning you, to watch you; |
[11]And they will take you up in their arms, so that even your foot may not strike a stone. |
[11]et quia in manibus tollent te, ne forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum. |
[12]Jesus answered and said to him, It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God. |
[13]When the adversary was through with all his temptations, he left him for some time. |
[14]So Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and the fame about him went out through all the country around them. |
[15]And he taught in their synagogues, and was praised by every man. |
[16]And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he entered the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was the custom, and stood up to read. |
[16]Et venit Nazareth, ubi erat nutritus, et intravit secundum consuetudinem suam die sabbati in synagogam, et surrexit legere. |
[17]And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. And Jesus opened the book, and found the place where it is written, |
[18]The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because of this he has anointed me, to preach good tidings to the poor; and he has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, and to proclaim release to the captives, and sight to the blind; to strengthen with forgiveness those who are bruised |
[18]Spiritus Domini super me: propter quod unxit me, evangelizare pauperibus misit me, sanare contritos corde, |
[19]And to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. |
[19]prædicare captivis remissionem, et cæcis visum, dimittere confractos in remissionem, prædicare annum Domini acceptum et diem retributioni. |
[20]And he rolled up the scroll and gave it to the attendant, and went and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him. |
[21]And he began to say to them, To-day this scripture is fulfilled in your ears. |
[22]And all testified to him, and were amazed by the words of grace which came out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this man the son of Joseph? |
[23]Jesus said to them, You might probably tell me this proverb, "Physician, heal yourself"; and all that we heard you did in Capernaum, do also here in your own city. |
[23]Et ait illis: Utique dicetis mihi hanc similitudinem: Medice cura teipsum: quanta audivimus facta in Capharnaum, fac et hic in patria tua. |
[24]Then he said, Truly I say to you, No prophet is acceptable in his own city. |
[25]For truly I say to you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of the prophet Elijah, when the heaven was closed for three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout the land; |
[25]In veritate dico vobis, multæ viduæ erant in diebus Eliæ in Israël, quando clausum est cælum annis tribus et mensibus sex, cum facta esset fames magna in omni terra: |
[26]Yet Elijah was not sent to one of them, but to Zarephath of Sidon, to a widow. |
[27]And there were many lepers in Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha, and yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian. |
[28]When those who were in the synagogue heard these things, they were all filled with anger. |
[29]And they rose up, and took him outside the city, and brought him to the brow of the mountain, on which their city was built, that they might throw him down from a cliff. |
[30]But he passed through the midst of them and went away. |
[30]Ipse autem transiens per medium illorum, ibat. |
[31]And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and he taught them on the sabbaths. |
[31]Et descendit in Capharnaum civitatem Galilææ, ibique docebat illos sabbatis. |
[32]And they were astonished at his teaching; because his word had power. |
[32]Et stupebant in doctrina ejus, quia in potestate erat sermo ipsius. |
[33]And there was in the synagogue a man who had an unclean, demonic spirit, and he cried in a loud voice, |
[33]Et in synagoga erat homo habens dæmonium immundum, et exclamavit voce magna, |
[34]And said, Leave me alone, what have we in common, O Jesus the Nazarene? have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, "Holy One of God"! |
[34]dicens: Sine, quid nobis et tibi, Jesu Nazarene? venisti perdere nos? scio te quis sis, Sanctus Dei. |
[35]And Jesus rebuked him, and said, Keep quiet, and come out of him. The demon threw him in the midst, and went out of him, and did him no harm. |
[36]And every man was seized with amazement, and spoke among themselves, saying, What kind of word is this, that he commands unclean spirits with authority and power, and they go out! |
[37]And the fame about him went out through all the country around them. |
[37]Et divulgabatur fama de illo in omnem locum regionis. |
[38]And when Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. And Simon's mother-in-law was suffering with a severe fever; and they besought him for her. |
[39]And he stood by her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she rose up immediately and ministered to them. |
[39]Et stans super illam imperavit febri: et dimisit illam. Et continuo surgens, ministrabat illis. |
[40]When the sun was setting, all who had sick people suffering from divers diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hand on each one of them, and healed them. |
At ille singulis manus imponens, curabat eos. |
[41]Demons also came out of many, who cried out saying, You are the Christ, the Son of God. And he rebuked them, and he would not allow them to speak; that they might not know that he was the Christ. |
[42]And in the morning, he came out and went to a desert place; and the people were looking for him, and came where he was; and they held him so that he might not leave them. |
[43]But Jesus said to them, I must preach the kingdom of God in other cities also; because I was sent for this. |
[43]Quibus ille ait: Quia et aliis civitatibus oportet me evangelizare regnum Dei: quia ideo missus sum. |
[44]And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. |
[44]Et erat prædicans in synagogis Galilææ. |
