| [1]ויהי בחדש ניסן שנת עשרים לארתחשסתא המלך־יין לפניו ואשא את היין ואתנה למלך ולא הייתי רע לפניו |
[1]And it came to pass in the monthH2320 NisanH5212, in the twentiethH6242 yearH8141 of ArtaxerxesH783 the kingH4428, that wineH3196 was beforeH6440 him: and I took upH5375[H8799] the wineH3196, and gaveH5414[H8799] it unto the kingH4428. Now I had not been beforetime sadH7451 in his presenceH6440. |
| [2]ויאמר לי המלך מדוע פניך רעים ואתה אינך חולה־אין זה כי אם רע לב ואירא הרבה מאד |
[2]Wherefore the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto me, Why is thy countenanceH6440 sadH7451, seeing thou art not sickH2470[H8802]? this is nothing else but sorrowH7455 of heartH3820. Then I was veryH3966 soreH7235[H8687] H3372afraidH8799 |
| [3]ואמר למלך המלך לעולם יחיה מדוע לא ירעו פני אשר העיר בית קברות אבתי חרבה ושעריה אכלו באש |
[3]And saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, Let the kingH4428 liveH2421[H8799] for everH5769: why should not my countenanceH6440 be sadH3415[H8799], when the cityH5892, the placeH1004 of my fathers'H1 sepulchresH6913, lieth wasteH2720, and the gatesH8179 thereof are consumedH398[H8795] with fireH784? |
| [4]ויאמר לי המלך על מה זה אתה מבקש ואתפלל אל אלהי השמים |
[4]Then the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto me, For what dost thou make requestH1245[H8764]? So I prayedH6419[H8691] to the GodH430 of heavenH8064. |
| [5]ואמר למלך־אם על המלך טוב ואם ייטב עבדך לפניך אשר תשלחני אל יהודה אל עיר קברות אבתי־ואבננה |
[5]And I saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, If it pleaseH2895[H8804] the kingH4428, and if thy servantH5650 have found favourH3190[H8799] in thy sightH6440, that thou wouldest sendH7971[H8799] me unto JudahH3063, unto the cityH5892 of my fathers'H1 sepulchresH6913, that I may buildH1129 itH8799. |
| [6]ויאמר לי המלך והשגל יושבת אצלו עד מתי יהיה מהלכך־ומתי תשוב וייטב לפני המלך וישלחני ואתנה לו זמן |
[6]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto me, (the queenH7694 also sittingH3427[H8802] by himH681,) For how long shall thy journeyH4109 be? and when wilt thou returnH7725[H8799]? So it pleasedH3190[H8799][H6440] the kingH4428 to sendH7971[H8799] me; and I setH5414[H8799] him a timeH2165. |
| [7]ואומר למלך־אם על המלך טוב אגרות יתנו לי על פחוות עבר הנהר אשר יעבירוני עד אשר אבוא אל יהודה |
[7]Moreover I saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, If it pleaseH2895[H8804] the kingH4428, let lettersH107 be givenH5414[H8799] me to the governorsH6346 beyondH5676 the riverH5104, that they may convey me overH5674[H8686] till I comeH935[H8799] into JudahH3063; |
| [8]ואגרת אל אסף שמר הפרדס אשר למלך אשר יתן לי עצים לקרות את שערי הבירה אשר לבית ולחומת העיר ולבית אשר אבוא אליו ויתן לי המלך כיד אלהי הטובה עלי |
[8]And a letterH107 unto AsaphH623 the keeperH8104[H8802] of the king'sH4428 forestH6508, that he may giveH5414[H8799] me timberH6086 to make beamsH7136[H8763] for the gatesH8179 of the palaceH1002 which appertained to the houseH1004, and for the wallH2346 of the cityH5892, and for the houseH1004 that I shall enter intoH935[H8799]. And the kingH4428 grantedH5414[H8799] me, according to the goodH2896 handH3027 of my God upon meH430. |
| [9]ואבוא אל פחוות עבר הנהר ואתנה להם את אגרות המלך וישלח עמי המלך שרי חיל ופרשים |
[9]Then I cameH935[H8799] to the governorsH6346 beyondH5676 the riverH5104, and gaveH5414[H8799] them the king'sH4428 lettersH107. Now the kingH4428 had sentH7971[H8799] captainsH8269 of the armyH2428 and horsemen with meH6571. |
| [10]וישמע סנבלט החרני וטוביה העבד העמני וירע להם רעה גדלה אשר בא אדם לבקש טובה לבני ישראל |
[10]When SanballatH5571 the HoroniteH2772, and TobiahH2900 the servantH5650, the AmmoniteH5984, heardH8085[H8799] of it, it grievedH3415[H8799] them exceedinglyH7451[H1419] that there was comeH935[H8804] a manH120 to seekH1245[H8763] the welfareH2896 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. |
| [11]ואבוא אל ירושלם ואהי שם ימים שלשה |
[11]So I cameH935[H8799] to JerusalemH3389, and was there threeH7969 daysH3117. |
| [12]ואקום לילה אני ואנשים מעט עמי ולא הגדתי לאדם מה אלהי נתן אל לבי לעשות לירושלם ובהמה אין עמי כי אם הבהמה אשר אני רכב בה |
[12]And I aroseH6965[H8799] in the nightH3915, I and someH4592 fewH4592 menH582 with me; neither toldH5046[H8689] I any manH120 what my GodH430 had putH5414[H8802] in my heartH3820 to doH6213[H8800] at JerusalemH3389: neither was there any beastH929 with me, save the beastH929 that I rode uponH7392.[H8802] |
| [13]ואצאה בשער הגיא לילה ואל פני עין התנין ואל שער האשפת ואהי שבר בחומת ירושלם אשר המפרוצים [Q: הם פרוצים] ושעריה אכלו באש |
[13]And I went outH3318[H8799] by nightH3915 by the gateH8179 of the valleyH1516, even beforeH6440 the dragonH8577 wellH5869[H8677][H5886], and to the dungH830 portH8179, and viewedH7663[H8802][H8675][H7665][H8799] the wallsH2346 of JerusalemH3389, which were broken downH6555[H8803], and the gatesH8179 thereof were consumedH398[H8795] with fireH784. |
| [14]ואעבר אל שער העין ואל ברכת המלך ואין מקום לבהמה לעבר תחתי |
[14]Then I went onH5674[H8799] to the gateH8179 of the fountainH5869, and to the king'sH4428 poolH1295: but there was no placeH4725 for the beastH929 that was under me to passH5674.[H8800] |
| [15]ואהי עלה בנחל לילה ואהי שבר בחומה ואשוב ואבוא בשער הגיא־ואשוב |
[15]Then went I upH5927[H8802] in the nightH3915 by the brookH5158, and viewedH7663[H8802][H8675][H7665][H8799] the wallH2346, and turned backH7725[H8799], and enteredH935[H8799] by the gateH8179 of the valleyH1516, and so returnedH7725.[H8799] |
| [16]והסגנים לא ידעו אנה הלכתי ומה אני עשה וליהודים ולכהנים ולחרים ולסגנים וליתר עשה המלאכה־עד כן לא הגדתי |
[16]And the rulersH5461 knewH3045[H8804] not whither I wentH1980[H8804], or what I didH6213[H8802]; neither had I as yetH3651 toldH5046[H8689] it to the JewsH3064, nor to the priestsH3548, nor to the noblesH2715, nor to the rulersH5461, nor to the restH3499 that didH6213[H8802] the workH4399. |
| [17]ואומר אלהם אתם ראים הרעה אשר אנחנו בה אשר ירושלם חרבה ושעריה נצתו באש לכו ונבנה את חומת ירושלם ולא נהיה עוד חרפה |
[17]Then saidH559[H8799] I unto them, Ye seeH7200[H8802] the distressH7451 that we are in, how JerusalemH3389 lieth wasteH2720, and the gatesH8179 thereof are burnedH3341[H8738] with fireH784: comeH3212[H8798], and let us build upH1129[H8799] the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389, that we be no more a reproachH2781. |
| [18]ואגיד להם את יד אלהי אשר היא טובה עלי ואף דברי המלך אשר אמר לי ויאמרו נקום ובנינו ויחזקו ידיהם לטובה |
[18]Then I toldH5046[H8686] them of the handH3027 of my GodH430 which was goodH2896 upon me; as also the king'sH4428 wordsH1697 that he had spokenH559[H8804] unto me. And they saidH559[H8799], Let us rise upH6965[H8799] and buildH1129[H8804]. So they strengthenedH2388[H8762] their handsH3027 for this good workH2896. |
| [19]וישמע סנבלט החרני וטביה העבד העמוני וגשם הערבי וילעגו לנו ויבזו עלינו ויאמרו מה הדבר הזה אשר אתם עשים־העל המלך אתם מרדים |
[19]But when SanballatH5571 the HoroniteH2772, and TobiahH2900 the servantH5650, the AmmoniteH5984, and GeshemH1654 the ArabianH6163, heardH8085[H8799] it, they laughed us to scornH3932[H8686], and despisedH959[H8799] us, and saidH559[H8799], What is this thingH1697 that ye doH6213[H8802]? will ye rebelH4775[H8802] against the kingH4428? |
| [20]ואשיב אותם דבר ואומר להם אלהי השמים הוא יצליח לנו ואנחנו עבדיו נקום ובנינו ולכם אין חלק וצדקה וזכרון־בירושלם |
[20]Then answeredH7725[H8686][H1697] I them, and saidH559[H8799] unto them, The GodH430 of heavenH8064, he will prosperH6743[H8686] us; therefore we his servantsH5650 will ariseH6965[H8799] and buildH1129[H8804]: but ye have no portionH2506, nor rightH6666, nor memorialH2146, in JerusalemH3389. |
