[1]WISDOM has built her house, she has set up in it seven pillars; |
[1]Wisdom bildide an hous to him silf; he hewide out seuene pileris, |
[2]She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mingled her wine; she has also prepared her table. |
[2]he offride his slayn sacrifices, he medlide wijn, and settide forth his table. |
[3]She has sent forth her servants to cry out upon the highest places and say, |
[3]He sente hise handmaides, that thei schulden clepe to the tour; and to the wallis of the citee. |
[4]Whosoever is simple, let him come to me; as for him who lacks understanding, she said to him, |
[4]If ony man is litil; come he to me. And wisdom spak to vnwise men, |
[5]Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine which I have mingled. |
[5]Come ye, ete ye my breed; and drynke ye the wiyn, which Y haue medlid to you. |
[6]Forsake folly, and live; and go in the way of understanding. |
[6]Forsake ye yong childhed, and lyue ye; and go ye bi the weyes of prudence. |
[7]Correction for a bad man brings disgrace; the wicked man is rebuked by his own blemish. |
[7]He that techith a scornere, doith wrong to him silf; and he that vndirnymmeth a wickid man, gendrith a wem to him silf. |
[8]Reprove not a bad man, lest he hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. |
[8]Nile thou vndirnyme a scornere; lest he hate thee. Vndirnyme thou a wise man; and he schal loue thee. |
[9]Give an opportunity to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. |
[9]Yyue thou occasioun to a wise man; and wisdom schal be encreessid to hym. Teche thou a iust man; and he schal haste to take. |
[10]The reverence of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the righteous is understanding. |
[10]The bigynnyng of wisdom is the dreed of the Lord; and prudence is the kunnyng of seyntis. |
[11]For by her your days shall be multiplied, and the years of your life shall be increased. |
[11]For thi daies schulen be multiplied bi me; and yeeris of lijf schulen be encreessid to thee. |
[12]My son, if you are wise, you are wise for yourself and for your friends; but if you are evil-minded, you alone shall bear your evils |
[12]If thou art wijs; thou schalt be to thi silf, and to thi neiyboris. Forsothe if thou art a scornere; thou aloone schalt bere yuel. |
[13]He who denies things falsely feeds on winds and pursues fowl of the air; for he has forsaken the way to his vineyard and the paths of his labor, to journey in the wilderness without water; in the places that are trodden he travels thirsty and gains nothing. |
[13]A fonned womman, and ful of cry, and ful of vnleueful lustis, and that kan no thing outirli, |
[14]A foolish woman is enticing; she does not know what shame is; she sits at the door of her home on a high seat, |
[14]sittith in the doris of hir hous, on a seete, in an hiy place of the cite; |
[15]She calls those who pass by, who go right on their ways; |
[15]to clepe men passinge bi the weie, and men goynge in her iournei. |
[16]She says, He who is simple, let him come to me; and as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, |
[16]Who is a litil man `of wit; bowe he to me. And sche spak to a coward, |
[17]Stolen waters are sweet and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. |
[17]Watris of thefte ben swettere, and breed hid is swettere. |
[18]But he does not know that the mighty men perish with her and that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. (9:19) Now rise up, and do not abide in that place; do not cast your eye at her; thus pass by the waters of strangers; cross over a strange river, and turn away from the waters of strangers; you shall not drink of the waters of strangers. For in doing so a multitude of days and years of life shall be added to you |
[18]And wiste not that giauntis ben there; and the gestis `of hir ben in the depthis of helle. Sotheli he that schal be applied, ether fastned, to hir; schal go doun to hellis. For whi he that goith awei fro hir; schal be saued. |
