[1]If there be a controversyH7379 between menH582, and they comeH5066[H8738] unto judgmentH4941, that the judges may judgeH8199[H8804] them; then they shall justifyH6663[H8689] the righteousH6662, and condemnH7561[H8689] the wickedH7563. [1]When there shall be strife between men, and they shall come unto judgment, and sentence shall be given upon them, and the righteous shall be justified, and the wicked condemned,
[2]And it shall be, if the wicked manH7563 be worthyH1121 to be beatenH5221[H8687], that the judgeH8199[H8802] shall cause him to lie downH5307[H8689], and to be beatenH5221[H8689] before his faceH6440, accordingH1767 to his faultH7564, by a certain numberH4557. [2]Then if so be the wicked be worthy to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his trespass, unto a certain number.
[3]FortyH705 stripesH5221[H8686] he may give him, and not exceedH3254[H8686]: lest, if he should exceedH3254[H8686], and beatH5221[H8687] him above these with manyH7227 stripesH4347, then thy brotherH251 should seem vileH7034[H8738] unto theeH5869. [3]Forty stripes shall he cause him to have and not past, lest if he should exceed and beat him above that with many stripes, thy brother should appear despised in thy sight.
[4]Thou shalt not muzzleH2629[H8799] the oxH7794 when he treadeth outH1778 the cornH8800. [4]Thou shalt not mussel the ox that treadeth out the corn.
[5]If brethrenH251 dwellH3427[H8799] togetherH3162, and oneH259 of them dieH4191[H8804], and have no childH1121, the wifeH802 of the deadH4191[H8801] shall not marry withoutH2351 unto a strangerH376[H2114][H8801]: her husband's brotherH2993 shall go inH935[H8799] unto her, and takeH3947[H8804] her to him to wifeH802, and perform the duty of an husband's brotherH2992 unto herH8762. [5]If brethren dwell together, and one of them die and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without: that is, unto a stranger, but his kinsman shall go in unto her, and take her to wife, and do the kinsman's office to her.
[6]And it shall be, that the firstbornH1060 which she bearethH3205[H8799] shall succeedH6965[H8799] in the nameH8034 of his brotherH251 which is deadH4191[H8801], that his nameH8034 be not put outH4229[H8735] of IsraelH3478. [6]And the firstborn which she beareth, shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
[7]And if the manH376 likeH2654[H8799] not to takeH3947[H8800] his brother's wifeH2994, then let his brother's wifeH2994 go upH5927[H8804] to the gateH8179 unto the eldersH2205, and sayH559[H8804], My husband's brotherH2993 refusethH3985[H8765] to raise upH6965[H8687] unto his brotherH251 a nameH8034 in IsraelH3478, he willH14[H8804] not perform the duty of my husband's brotherH2992.[H8763] [7]And if the man will not take his kinswoman, then let his kinswoman go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My kinsman refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel: he will not do the office of a kinsman unto me.
[8]Then the eldersH2205 of his cityH5892 shall callH7121[H8804] him, and speakH1696[H8765] unto him: and if he standH5975[H8804] to it, and sayH559[H8804], I likeH2654[H8804] not to takeH3947 herH8800; [8]Then the elders of his city shall call him, and commune with him: if he stand and say, I will not take her,
[9]Then shall his brother's wifeH2994 comeH5066[H8738] unto him in the presenceH5869 of the eldersH2205, and looseH2502[H8804] his shoeH5275 from off his footH7272, and spitH3417[H8804] in his faceH6440, and shall answerH6030[H8804] and sayH559[H8804], So shall it be doneH6213[H8735] unto that manH376 that will not build upH1129[H8799] his brother'sH251 houseH1004. [9]Then shall his kinswoman come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from his foot, and spit in his face, and answer, and say, So shall it be done unto that man, that will not build up his brother's house.
[10]And his nameH8034 shall be calledH7121[H8738] in IsraelH3478, The houseH1004 of him that hath his shoeH5275 loosedH2502.[H8803] [10]And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him whose shoe is put off.
[11]When menH582 striveH5327[H8735] togetherH3162 one with anotherH251[H376], and the wifeH802 of the oneH259 draweth nearH7126[H8804] for to deliverH5337[H8687] her husbandH376 out of the handH3027 of him that smitethH5221[H8688] him, and putteth forthH7971[H8804] her handH3027, and takethH2388[H8689] him by the secretsH4016: [11]When men strive together, one with another, if the wife of the one come near, for to rid her husband out of the hands of him that smiteth him, and put forth her hand, and take him by his privities,
[12]Then thou shalt cut offH7112[H8804] her handH3709, thine eyeH5869 shall not pityH2347 herH8799. [12]Then thou shalt cut off her hand: thine eye shall not spare her.
[13]Thou shalt not have in thy bagH3599 divers weightsH68[H68], a greatH1419 and a smallH6996. [13]Thou shalt not have in thy bag two manner of weights, a great and a small,
[14]Thou shalt not have in thine houseH1004 divers measuresH374[H374], a greatH1419 and a smallH6996. [14]Neither shalt thou have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small:
[15]But thou shalt have a perfectH8003 and justH6664 weightH68, a perfectH8003 and justH6664 measureH374 shalt thou have: that thy daysH3117 may be lengthenedH748[H8686] in the landH127 which the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 givethH5414 theeH8802. [15]But thou shalt have a right and just weight: a perfect and a just measure shalt thou have, that thy days may be lengthened in the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
[16]For all that doH6213[H8802] such thingsH428, and all that doH6213[H8802] unrighteouslyH5766, are an abominationH8441 unto the LORDH3068 thy GodH430. [16]For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are abomination unto the Lord thy God.
[17]RememberH2142[H8800] what AmalekH6002 didH6213[H8804] unto thee by the wayH1870, when ye were come forthH3318[H8800] out of EgyptH4714; [17]Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come out of Egypt:
[18]How he metH7136[H8804] thee by the wayH1870, and smote the hindmostH2179[H8762] of thee, even all that were feebleH2826[H8737] behindH310 thee, when thou wast faintH5889 and wearyH3023; and he fearedH3373 not GodH430. [18]How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of you, all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast fainted and weary, and he feared not God.
[19]Therefore it shall be, when the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath given thee restH5117[H8687] from all thine enemiesH341[H8802] round aboutH5439, in the landH776 which the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 givethH5414[H8802] thee for an inheritanceH5159 to possessH3423[H8800] it, that thou shalt blot outH4229[H8799] the remembranceH2143 of AmalekH6002 from under heavenH8064; thou shalt not forgetH7911 itH8799. [19]Therefore, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about in the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, then thou shalt put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven: forget not.
