| [1]Forsothe Sare lyuede an hundrid and seuene and twenti yeer, |
[1]Sara was an hudreth and seuen and twentie yere olde (so long liued she. |
| [2]and diede in the citee of Arbee, which is Ebron, in the lond of Chanaan; and Abraham cam to biweyle and biwepe hir. |
[2]And Sara dyed in Ciriath arba, the same is Hebron, in the lande of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourne for Sara, and to weepe for her |
| [3]And whanne he hadde rise fro the office of the deed bodi, he spak to the sones of Heth, and seide, |
[3]And Abraham stoode vp fro the sight of his corse, and talked with the sonnes of Heth, saying |
| [4]Y am a comelyng and a pilgrym anentis you; yyue ye to me riyt of sepulcre with you, that Y birie my deed body. |
[4]I am a straunger and a foriner amongest you: geue me a possession to bury in with you, that I may bury my corse out of my sight |
| [5]And the sones of Heth answeriden, and seiden, Lord, here thou vs; |
[5]And the chyldren of Heth aunswered Abraham, saying vnto hym |
| [6]thou art the prince of God anentis vs; birie thou thi deed bodi in oure chosun sepulcris, and no man schal mow forbede thee, that ne thou birie thi deed bodi in the sepulcre of him. |
[6]Heare vs my Lorde, thou art a prince of God amongest vs, in the chiefest of our sepulchres bury thy dead: none of vs shall forbyd thee his sepulchre, but thou mayest bury thy dead [therin. |
| [7]And Abraham roos, and worschipide the puple of the lond, that is, the sones of Heth. |
[7]Abraham stoode vp and bowed hym selfe before the people of the lande, that is, the chyldren of Heth |
| [8]And he seide to hem, If it plesith youre soule that Y birie my deed bodi, here ye me, and preie ye for me to Efron, the sone of Seor, |
[8]And he communed with them, saying: If it be your mynde that I shal bury my dead out of my sight, heare me, and speake for me to Ephron the sonne of Sohar |
| [9]that he yyue to me the double caue, whiche he hath in the vttirmoste part of his feeld; for sufficiaunt money yyue he it to me bifore you into possessioun of sepulcre. |
[9]That he may geue me the caue of Machpelah, whiche he hath in the ende of his fielde: but for as much money as it is worth shall he geue it me, for a possession to bury in amongest you |
| [10]Forsothe Efron dwellide in the myddis of the sones of Heth. And Efron answerde to Abraham, while alle men herden that entriden bi the yate of that citee, |
[10](For Ephron dwelleth amongest the chyldren of Heth) and Ephron the Hethite aunswered Abraham in the audience of the chyldren of Heth, and of all that went in at the gates of his citie, saying |
| [11]and seide, My lord, it schal not be doon so, but more herkne thou that that Y seie; Y yyue to thee the feeld, and the denne which is therine, while the sones of my puple ben present; birie thou thi deed bodi. |
[11]Not so my Lord, heare me: the fielde geue I thee, and the caue that therin is geue I thee also, in the presence of the sonnes of my people geue I it thee, burye thy dead |
| [12]Abraham worschipide bifor the Lord, and bifor the puple of the lond, |
[12]And Abraham bowed him selfe before the people of the lande |
| [13]and he spak to Efron, while his puple stood aboute, Y biseche, that thou here me; Y schal yyue money for the feeld, resseyue thou it, and so Y schal birie my deed bodi in the feeld. |
[13]And spake vnto Ephron in the audience of the people of the countrey, saying: yf thou wylt [geue it] then I pray thee heare me, I wyll geue syluer for the fielde, take it of me, and I will bury my dead therin |
| [14]And Efron answerde, My lord, |
[14]Ephron aunswered Abraham, saying vnto hym |
| [15]here thou me, the lond which thou axist is worth foure hundrid siclis of siluer, that is the prijs bitwixe me and thee, but hou myche is this? birie thou thi deed bodi. |
[15]My Lord, hearken vnto me, the lande is worth foure hundred sicles of siluer, what is that betwixt thee and me? bury therfore thy dead |
| [16]And whanne Abraham hadde herd this, he noumbride the monei which Efron axide, while the sones of Heth herden, foure hundrid siclis of siluer, and of preuyd comyn monei. |
[16]And Abraham hearkened vnto Ephron, and wayed him the siluer which he had sayde in the aundience of the sonnes of Heth, euen foure hundred syluer sicles of currant money amongest marchauntes |
| [17]And the feeld that was sumtyme of Efron, in which feeld was a double denne, biholdinge to Mambre, as wel thilke feeld as the denne and alle the trees therof, in alle termes therof bi cumpas, was confermed to Abraham in to possessioun, |
[17]And the fielde of Ephron in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, eue the fielde and the caue that was therein, and all the trees that were in the fielde, and that were in al the borders rounde about, was made sur |
| [18]while the sones of Heth seiyen and alle men that entriden bi the yate of that citee. |
[18]Unto Abraham for a possession in the sight of the chyldren of Heth, before all that went in at the gates of the citie |
| [19]And so Abraham biriede Sare, his wijf, in the double denne of the feeld, that bihelde to Mambre; this is Ebron in the lond of Chanaan. |
[19]After this dyd Abraham bury Sara his wyfe in the double caue of the fielde that lyeth before Mamre, the same is Hebron in the land of Chanaan |
| [20]And the feeld, and the denne that was therynne, was confermyd of the sones of Heth to Abraham, in to possessioun of sepulcre. |
[20]And so both the fielde & the caue that is therein, was made vnto Abraham a sure possession to bury in, by the sonnes of Heth |
