| [1]The word that was maad of the Lord to Jeremye, |
[1]The wordH1697 which came to JeremiahH3414 from the LORDH3068, sayingH559,[H8800] |
| [2]and seide, Rise thou, and go doun in to the hous of a pottere, and there thou schalt here my wordis. |
[2]AriseH6965[H8798], and go downH3381[H8804] to the potter'sH3335[H8802] houseH1004, and there I will cause thee to hearH8085[H8686] my wordsH1697. |
| [3]And Y yede doun in to the hous of a pottere, and lo! he made a werk on a wheel. |
[3]Then I went downH3381[H8799] to the potter'sH3335[H8802] houseH1004, and, beholdH2009, he wroughtH6213[H8802] a workH4399 on the wheelsH70. |
| [4]And the vessel was distried, which he made of clei with hise hondis; and he turnede it, and made it another vessel, as it pleside in hise iyen to make. |
[4]And the vesselH3627 that he madeH6213[H8802] of clayH2563 was marredH7843[H8738] in the handH3027 of the potterH3335[H8802]: so he madeH6213[H8799] it againH7725[H8804] anotherH312 vesselH3627, as seemedH5869 goodH3474[H8804] to the potterH3335[H8802] to makeH6213 itH8800. |
| [5]And the word of the Lord was maad to me, |
[5]Then the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 came to me, sayingH559,[H8800] |
| [6]and he seide, Whether as this pottere doith, Y mai not do to you, the hous of Israel? seith the Lord. Lo! as cley is in the hond of a pottere, so ye, the hous of Israel, ben in myn hond. |
[6]O houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, cannotH3201[H8799] I doH6213[H8800] with you as this potterH3335[H8802]? saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068. Behold, as the clayH2563 is in the potter'sH3335[H8802] handH3027, so are ye in mine handH3027, O houseH1004 of IsraelH3478. |
| [7]Sudenli Y schal speke ayens a folk, and ayens a rewme, that Y drawe out, and distrie, and leese it. |
[7]At what instantH7281 I shall speakH1696[H8762] concerning a nationH1471, and concerning a kingdomH4467, to pluck upH5428[H8800], and to pull downH5422[H8800], and to destroyH6 itH8687; |
| [8]If thilke folk doith penaunce of his yuel, which Y spak ayens it, also Y schal do penaunce on the yuel, which Y thouyte to do to it. |
[8]If that nationH1471, against whom I have pronouncedH1696[H8765], turnH7725[H8804] from their evilH7451, I will repentH5162[H8738] of the evilH7451 that I thoughtH2803[H8804] to doH6213 unto themH8800. |
| [9]And Y schal speke sudenli of a folk, and of a rewme, that Y bilde, and plaunte it. |
[9]And at what instantH7281 I shall speakH1696[H8762] concerning a nationH1471, and concerning a kingdomH4467, to buildH1129[H8800] and to plantH5193 itH8800; |
| [10]If it doith yuel bifore myn iyen, that it here not my vois, Y schal do penaunce on the good which Y spak, that Y schulde do to it. |
[10]If it doH6213[H8804] evilH7451 in my sightH5869, that it obeyH8085[H8800] not my voiceH6963, then I will repentH5162[H8738] of the goodH2896, wherewith I saidH559[H8804] I would benefitH3190 themH8687. |
| [11]Now therfor seie thou to a man of Juda, and to the dwellere of Jerusalem, and seie, The Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y make yuel ayens you, and Y thenke a thouyte ayens you; ech man turne ayen fro his yuel weie, and dresse ye youre weies and youre studies. |
[11]Now therefore go to, speakH559[H8798] to the menH376 of JudahH3063, and to the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JerusalemH3389, sayingH559[H8800], Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068; Behold, I frameH3335[H8802] evilH7451 against you, and deviseH2803[H8802] a deviceH4284 against you: returnH7725[H8798] ye now every oneH376 from his evilH7451 wayH1870, and make your waysH1870 and your doingsH4611 goodH3190.[H8685] |
| [12]Whiche seiden, We han dispeirid, for we schulen go after oure thouytis, and we schulen do ech man the schrewidnesse of his yuel herte. |
[12]And they saidH559[H8804], There is no hopeH2976[H8737]: but we will walkH3212[H8799] afterH310 our own devicesH4284, and we will every oneH376 doH6213[H8799] the imaginationH8307 of his evilH7451 heartH3820. |
| [13]Therfor the Lord seith these thingis, Axe ye hethene men, who herde siche orible thingis, whiche the virgyn of Israel hath do greetli? |
[13]Therefore thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068; AskH7592[H8798] ye now among the heathenH1471, who hath heardH8085[H8804] such things: the virginH1330 of IsraelH3478 hath doneH6213[H8804] a veryH3966 horrible thingH8186. |
| [14]Whether snow of the Liban schal fail fro the stoon of the feeld? ether coolde watris brekynge out, and fletynge doun moun be takun awei? |
[14]Will a man leaveH5800[H8799] the snowH7950 of LebanonH3844 which cometh from the rockH6697 of the fieldH7704? or shall the coldH7119 flowingH5140[H8802] watersH4325 that come from another placeH2114[H8801] be forsakenH5428?[H8735] |
| [15]For my puple hath foryete me, and offriden sacrifices in veyn, and snaperiden in her weies, and in the pathis of the world, that thei yeden bi tho in a weie not trodun; |
[15]Because my peopleH5971 hath forgottenH7911[H8804] me, they have burned incenseH6999[H8762] to vanityH7723, and they have caused them to stumbleH3782[H8686] in their waysH1870 from the ancientH5769 pathsH7635[H8675][H7635], to walkH3212[H8800] in pathsH5410, in a wayH1870 H5549not cast upH8803 |
| [16]that the lond of hem schulde be in to desolacioun, and in to an hissyng euerlastinge; for whi ech that passith bi it, schal be astonyed, and schal moue his heed. |
[16]To makeH7760[H8800] their landH776 desolateH8047, and a perpetualH5769 hissingH8292[H8675][H8292]; every one that passethH5674[H8802] thereby shall be astonishedH8074[H8799], and wagH5110[H8686] his headH7218. |
| [17]As a brennynge wynd Y schal scatere hem bifor the enemy; Y schal schewe to hem the bak and not the face, in the dai of the perdicioun of hem. |
[17]I will scatterH6327[H8686] them as with an eastH6921 windH7307 beforeH6440 the enemyH341[H8802]; I will shewH7200[H8799] them the backH6203, and not the faceH6440, in the dayH3117 of their calamityH343. |
| [18]And thei seiden, Come ye, and thenke we thouytis ayens Jeremye; for whi the lawe schal not perische fro a preest, nether councel schal perische fro a wijs man, nether word schal perische fro a profete; come ye, and smyte we hym with tunge, and take we noon heede to alle the wordis of hym. |
[18]Then saidH559[H8799] they, ComeH3212[H8798], and let us deviseH2803[H8799] devicesH4284 against JeremiahH3414; for the lawH8451 shall not perishH6[H8799] from the priestH3548, nor counselH6098 from the wiseH2450, nor the wordH1697 from the prophetH5030. ComeH3212[H8798], and let us smiteH5221[H8686] him with the tongueH3956, and let us not give heedH7181[H8686] to any of his wordsH1697. |
| [19]Lord, yyue thou tent to me, and here thou the vois of myn aduersaries. |
[19]Give heedH7181[H8685] to me, O LORDH3068, and hearkenH8085[H8798] to the voiceH6963 of them that contend with meH3401. |
| [20]Whether yuel is yoldun for good, for thei han diggid a pit to my soule; haue thou mynde, that Y stoode in thi siyt, to speke good for hem, and to turne awei thin indignacioun fro hem. |
[20]Shall evilH7451 be recompensedH7999[H8792] for goodH2896? for they have diggedH3738[H8804] a pitH7745 for my soulH5315. RememberH2142[H8798] that I stoodH5975[H8800] beforeH6440 thee to speakH1696[H8763] goodH2896 for them, and to turn awayH7725[H8687] thy wrath from themH2534. |
| [21]Therfor yyue thou the sones of hem in to hungur, and lede forth hem in to the hondis of swerd; the wyues of hem be maad with out children, and be maad widewis, and the hosebondis of hem be slayn bi deth; the yonge men of hem be persid togidere bi swerd in batel. |
[21]Therefore deliver upH5414[H8798] their childrenH1121 to the famineH7458, and pour outH5064[H8685] their blood by the forceH3027 of the swordH2719; and let their wivesH802 be bereavedH7909 of their children, and be widowsH490; and let their menH582 be putH2026[H8803] to deathH4194; let their young menH970 be slainH5221[H8716] by the swordH2719 in battleH4421. |
| [22]Cry be herd of the housis of hem, for thou schalt bringe sudenli a theef on hem; for thei diggiden a pit to take me, and hidden snaris to my feet. |
[22]Let a cryH2201 be heardH8085[H8735] from their housesH1004, when thou shalt bringH935[H8686] a troopH1416 suddenlyH6597 upon them: for they have diggedH3738[H8804] a pitH7745[H8675][H7882] to takeH3920[H8800] me, and hidH2934[H8804] snaresH6341 for my feetH7272. |
| [23]But thou, Lord, knowist al the councel of hem ayens me in to deth; do thou not merci to the wickidnesse of hem, and the synne of hem be not doon awei fro thi face; be thei maad fallynge doun in thi siyt, in the tyme of thi stronge veniaunce; vse thou hem to othir thing than thei weren ordeyned. |
[23]Yet, LORDH3068, thou knowestH3045[H8804] all their counselH6098 against me to slayH4194 me: forgiveH3722[H8762] not their iniquityH5771, neither blot outH4229[H8686] their sinH2403 from thy sightH6440, but let them be overthrownH3782[H8716] beforeH6440 thee; dealH6213[H8798] thus with them in the timeH6256 of thine angerH639. |
