[1]Now at that time the Philistines assembled their bands and army to fight with Israel: therefore Achish said to David, Be sure, thou shalt go out with me to the battle, thou, and thy men. |
| [2]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] to AchishH397, SurelyH3651 thou shalt knowH3045[H8799] what thy servantH5650 can doH6213[H8799]. And AchishH397 saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, Therefore will I makeH7760[H8799] thee keeperH8104[H8802] of mine headH7218 for everH3117. |
[2]And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know, what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Surely I will make thee keeper of mine head forever. |
| [3]Now SamuelH8050 was deadH4191[H8804], and all IsraelH3478 had lamentedH5594[H8799] him, and buriedH6912[H8799] him in RamahH7414, even in his own cityH5892. And SaulH7586 had put awayH5493[H8689] those that had familiar spiritsH178, and the wizardsH3049, out of the landH776. |
[3](Samuel was then dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah his own city: and Saul had put away the sorcerers, and the soothsayers out of the land) |
| [4]And the PhilistinesH6430 gathered themselves togetherH6908[H8735], and cameH935[H8799] and pitchedH2583[H8799] in ShunemH7766: and SaulH7586 gatheredH6908 all IsraelH3478 togetherH6908[H8799], and they pitchedH2583[H8799] in GilboaH1533. |
[4]Then the Philistines assembled themselves, and came, and pitched in Shunem: and Saul assembled all Israel, and they pitched in Gilboa. |
| [5]And when SaulH7586 sawH7200[H8799] the hostH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430, he was afraidH3372[H8799], and his heartH3820 greatlyH3966 trembledH2729.[H8799] |
[5]And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart was sore astonied. |
| [6]And when SaulH7586 enquiredH7592[H8799] of the LORDH3068, the LORDH3068 answeredH6030[H8804] him not, neither by dreamsH2472, nor by UrimH224, nor by prophetsH5030. |
[6]Therefore Saul asked counsel of the Lord, and the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor yet by prophets. |
| [7]Then saidH559[H8799] SaulH7586 unto his servantsH5650, SeekH1245[H8761] me a womanH802 that hathH1172 a familiar spiritH178, that I may goH3212[H8799] to her, and enquireH1875[H8799] of her. And his servantsH5650 saidH559[H8799] to him, Behold, there is a womanH802 that hathH1172 a familiar spiritH178 at EndorH5874. |
[7]Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and ask of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman at En-dor that hath a familiar spirit. |
| [8]And SaulH7586 disguisedH2664[H8691] himself, and put onH3847[H8799] otherH312 raimentH899, and he wentH3212[H8799], and twoH8147 menH582 with him, and they cameH935[H8799] to the womanH802 by nightH3915: and he saidH559[H8799], I pray thee, divineH7080[H8798] unto me by the familiar spiritH178, and bring me him upH5927[H8685], whom I shall nameH559 unto theeH8799. |
[8]Then Saul changed himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, conjecture unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up whom I shall name unto thee. |
| [9]And the womanH802 saidH559[H8799] unto him, Behold, thou knowestH3045[H8804] what SaulH7586 hath doneH6213[H8804], how he hath cut offH3772[H8689] those that have familiar spiritsH178, and the wizardsH3049, out of the landH776: wherefore then layest thou a snareH5367[H8693] for my lifeH5315, to cause me to dieH4191?[H8687] |
[9]And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath destroyed the sorcerers, and the soothsayers out of the land: wherefore then seekest thou to take me in a snare to cause me to die? |
| [10]And SaulH7586 swareH7650[H8735] to her by the LORDH3068, sayingH559[H8800], As the LORDH3068 livethH2416, there shallH518 no punishmentH5771 happenH7136[H8799] to thee for this thingH1697. |
[10]And Saul swear to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liveth, no harm shall come to thee for this thing. |
| [11]Then saidH559[H8799] the womanH802, Whom shall I bring upH5927[H8686] unto thee? And he saidH559[H8799], Bring me upH5927[H8685] SamuelH8050. |
[11]Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he answered, Bring me up Samuel. |
| [12]And when the womanH802 sawH7200[H8799] SamuelH8050, she criedH2199[H8799] with a loudH1419 voiceH6963: and the womanH802 spakeH559[H8799] to SaulH7586, sayingH559[H8800], Why hast thou deceivedH7411[H8765] me? for thou art SaulH7586. |
[12]And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice, and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? For thou art Saul. |
| [13]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto her, Be not afraidH3372[H8799]: for what sawestH7200[H8804] thou? And the womanH802 saidH559[H8799] unto SaulH7586, I sawH7200[H8804] godsH430 ascendingH5927[H8802] out of the earthH776. |
[13]And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending up out of the earth. |
| [14]And he saidH559[H8799] unto her, What formH8389 is he of? And she saidH559[H8799], An oldH2205 manH376 cometh upH5927[H8802]; and he is coveredH5844[H8802] with a mantleH4598. And SaulH7586 perceivedH3045[H8799] that it was SamuelH8050, and he stoopedH6915[H8799] with his faceH639 to the groundH776, and bowedH7812 himselfH8691. |
[14]Then he said unto her, What fashion is he of? And she answered, An old man cometh up lapped in a mantle: and Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he inclined his face to the ground, and bowed himself. |
| [15]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799] to SaulH7586, Why hast thou disquietedH7264[H8689] me, to bring me upH5927[H8687]? And SaulH7586 answeredH559[H8799], I am soreH3966 distressedH6887[H8804]; for the PhilistinesH6430 make warH3898[H8737] against me, and GodH430 is departedH5493[H8804] from me, and answerethH6030[H8804] me no more, neither byH3027 prophetsH5030, nor by dreamsH2472: therefore I have calledH7121[H8799] thee, that thou mayest make knownH3045[H8687] unto me what I shall doH6213.[H8799] |
[15]And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? Then Saul answered, I am in great distress: for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, neither by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest tell me, what I shall do. |
| [16]Then saidH559[H8799] SamuelH8050, Wherefore then dost thou askH7592[H8799] of me, seeing the LORDH3068 is departedH5493[H8804] from thee, and is become thine enemyH6145? |
[16]Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is gone from thee, and is thine enemy? |
| [17]And the LORDH3068 hath doneH6213[H8799] to him, as he spakeH1696[H8765] by meH3027: for the LORDH3068 hath rentH7167[H8799] the kingdomH4467 out of thine handH3027, and givenH5414[H8799] it to thy neighbourH7453, even to DavidH1732: |
[17]Even the Lord hath done to him, as he spake by mine hand: for the Lord will rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and give it thy neighbor David. |
| [18]BecauseH834 thou obeyedstH8085[H8804] not the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068, nor executedstH6213[H8804] his fierceH2740 wrathH639 upon AmalekH6002, therefore hath the LORDH3068 doneH6213[H8804] this thingH1697 unto thee this dayH3117. |
[18]Because thou obeyest not the voice of the Lord, nor executest his fierce wrath upon the Amalekites, therefore hath the Lord done this unto thee this day. |
| [19]Moreover the LORDH3068 will also deliverH5414[H8799] IsraelH3478 with thee into the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430: and to morrowH4279 shalt thou and thy sonsH1121 be with me: the LORDH3068 also shall deliverH5414[H8799] the hostH4264 of IsraelH3478 into the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430. |
[19]Moreover the Lord will deliver Israel with thee into the hands of the Philistines: and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me, and the Lord shall give the host of Israel into the hands of the Philistines. |
| [20]Then SaulH7586 fellH5307[H8799] straightwayH4116[H8762] allH4393 alongH6967 on the earthH776, and was soreH3966 afraidH3372[H8799], because of the wordsH1697 of SamuelH8050: and there was no strengthH3581 in him; for he had eatenH398[H8804] no breadH3899 all the dayH3117, nor all the nightH3915. |
[20]Then Saul fell straight way all along on the earth, and was sore afraid because of the words of Samuel, so that there was no strength in him: for he had eaten no bread all the day nor all the night. |
| [21]And the womanH802 cameH935[H8799] unto SaulH7586, and sawH7200[H8799] that he was soreH3966 troubledH926[H8738], and saidH559[H8799] unto him, Behold, thine handmaidH8198 hath obeyedH8085[H8804] thy voiceH6963, and I have putH7760[H8799] my lifeH5315 in my handH3709, and have hearkenedH8085[H8799] unto thy wordsH1697 which thou spakestH1696 unto meH8765. |
[21]Then the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, See, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my soul in mine hand, and have obeyed thy words which thou saidest unto me. |
| [22]Now therefore, I pray thee, hearkenH8085[H8798] thou also unto the voiceH6963 of thine handmaidH8198, and let me setH7760[H8799] a morselH6595 of breadH3899 beforeH6440 thee; and eatH398[H8798], that thou mayest have strengthH3581, when thou goestH3212[H8799] on thy wayH1870. |
[22]Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee, that thou mayest eat and get thee strength, and go on thy journey. |
| [23]But he refusedH3985[H8762], and saidH559[H8799], I will not eatH398[H8799]. But his servantsH5650, together with the womanH802, compelledH6555[H8799] him; and he hearkenedH8085[H8799] unto their voiceH6963. So he aroseH6965[H8799] from the earthH776, and satH3427[H8799] upon the bedH4296. |
[23]But he refused, and said, I will not eat: but his servants and the woman together compelled him, and he obeyed their voice: so he arose from the earth, and sat on the bed. |
| [24]And the womanH802 had a fatH4770 calfH5695 in the houseH1004; and she hastedH4116[H8762], and killedH2076[H8799] it, and tookH3947[H8799] flourH7058, and kneadedH3888[H8799] it, and did bakeH644[H8799] unleavened bread thereofH4682: |
[24]Now the woman had a fat calf in the house, and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour and kneaded it, and baked of it unleavened bread. |
| [25]And she broughtH5066[H8686] it beforeH6440 SaulH7586, and beforeH6440 his servantsH5650; and they did eatH398[H8799]. Then they rose upH6965[H8799], and went awayH3212[H8799] that nightH3915. |
[25]Then she brought them before Saul, and before his servants: and when they had eaten, they stood up, and went away the same night. |
