[1]Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came, and took up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill: and they sanctified Eleazar his son, to keep the ark of the Lord.
[2]And it came to pass, whileH3117 the arkH727 abodeH3427[H8800] in KirjathjearimH7157, that the timeH3117 was longH7235[H8799]; for it was twentyH6242 yearsH8141: and all the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 lamentedH5091[H8735] afterH310 the LORDH3068. [2](For while the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, the time was long, for it was twenty years) and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
[3]And SamuelH8050 spakeH559[H8799] unto all the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559[H8800], If ye do returnH7725[H8802] unto the LORDH3068 with all your heartsH3824, then put awayH5493[H8685] the strangeH5236 godsH430 and AshtarothH6252 from amongH8432 you, and prepareH3559[H8685] your heartsH3824 unto the LORDH3068, and serveH5647[H8798] him only: and he will deliverH5337[H8686] you out of the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430. [3]Then Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye be come again unto the Lord with all your heart, put away the strange gods from among you, and Ashtaroth, and direct your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only, and he shall deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
[4]Then the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 did put awayH5493[H8686] BaalimH1168 and AshtarothH6252, and servedH5647[H8799] the LORD onlyH3068. [4]Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only.
[5]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799], GatherH6908[H8798] all IsraelH3478 to MizpehH4708, and I will prayH6419[H8691] for you unto the LORDH3068. [5]And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.
[6]And they gathered togetherH6908[H8735] to MizpehH4709, and drewH7579[H8799] waterH4325, and poured it outH8210[H8799] beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and fastedH6684[H8799] on that dayH3117, and saidH559[H8799] there, We have sinnedH2398[H8804] against the LORDH3068. [6]And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted the same day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
[7]And when the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085[H8799] that the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 were gathered togetherH6908[H8694] to MizpehH4708, the lordsH5633 of the PhilistinesH6430 went upH5927[H8799] against IsraelH3478. And when the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 heardH8085[H8799] it, they were afraidH3372[H8799] ofH6440 the PhilistinesH6430. [7]When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the princes of the Philistines went up against Israel: and when the children of Israel heard that, they were afraid of the Philistines.
[8]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8799] to SamuelH8050, CeaseH2790[H8686] not to cryH2199[H8800] unto the LORDH3068 our GodH430 for us, that he will saveH3467[H8686] us out of the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430. [8]And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he may save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
[9]And SamuelH8050 tookH3947[H8799] aH259 suckingH2461 lambH2924, and offeredH5927[H8686] it for a burnt offeringH5930 whollyH3632 unto the LORDH3068: and SamuelH8050 criedH2199[H8799] unto the LORDH3068 for IsraelH3478; and the LORDH3068 heardH6030 himH8799. [9]Then Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it all together for a burnt offering unto the Lord, and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel, and the Lord heard him.
[10]And as SamuelH8050 was offering upH5927[H8688] the burnt offeringH5930, the PhilistinesH6430 drew nearH5066[H8738] to battleH4421 against IsraelH3478: but the LORDH3068 thunderedH7481[H8686] with a greatH1419 thunderH6963 on that dayH3117 upon the PhilistinesH6430, and discomfitedH2000[H8799] them; and they were smittenH5062[H8735] beforeH6440 IsraelH3478. [10]And as Samuel offered the burnt offering, the Philistines came to fight against Israel: but the Lord thundered with a great thunder that day upon the Philistines, and scattered them: so they were slain before Israel.
[11]And the menH582 of IsraelH3478 went outH3318[H8799] of MizpehH4709, and pursuedH7291[H8799] the PhilistinesH6430, and smoteH5221[H8686] them, until they came under BethcarH1033. [11]And the men of Israel went from Mizpeh and pursued the Philistines, and smote them until they came under Beth-car.
[12]Then SamuelH8050 tookH3947[H8799] aH259 stoneH68, and setH7760[H8799] it between MizpehH4709 and ShenH8129, and calledH7121[H8799] the nameH8034 of it EbenezerH72, sayingH559[H8799], Hitherto hath the LORDH3068 helpedH5826 usH8804. [12]Then Samuel took a stone and pitched it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name thereof, Eben-ezer, and he said, Hitherto hath the Lord holpen us.
[13]So the PhilistinesH6430 were subduedH3665[H8735], and they cameH935[H8800] no moreH3254[H8804] into the coastH1366 of IsraelH3478: and the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 was against the PhilistinesH6430 all the daysH3117 of SamuelH8050. [13]So the Philistines were brought under, and they came no more again into the coasts of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
[14]And the citiesH5892 which the PhilistinesH6430 had takenH3947[H8804] from IsraelH3478 were restoredH7725[H8799] to IsraelH3478, from EkronH6138 even unto GathH1661; and the coastsH1366 thereof did IsraelH3478 deliverH5337[H8689] out of the handsH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430. And there was peaceH7965 between IsraelH3478 and the AmoritesH567. [14]Also the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel, were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath: and Israel delivered the coasts of the same out of the hands of the Philistines: and there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
[15]And SamuelH8050 judgedH8199[H8799] IsraelH3478 all the daysH3117 of his lifeH2416. [15]And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life,
[16]And he wentH1980[H8804] fromH1767 yearH8141 to yearH8141 in circuitH5437[H8804] to BethelH1008, and GilgalH1537, and MizpehH4709, and judgedH8199[H8804] IsraelH3478 in all those placesH4725. [16]And went about year by year to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
[17]And his returnH8666 was to RamahH7414; for there was his houseH1004; and there he judgedH8199[H8804] IsraelH3478; and there he builtH1129[H8799] an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068. [17]Afterward he returned to Ramah: for there was his house, and there he judged Israel: also he built an altar there unto the Lord.
